Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column for the Maine Sunday Telegram since March 2004. He worked for the Telegram and its sister papers (Press Herald, Evening Express) full-time since early 1974, working at different times as a reporter, copy editor, layout editor, assistant city editor, special sections editor, also writing columns about gardening and beer (for five years) as a sideline. He retired from the full-time job in 2011, but continues the gardening column as a freelancer.
