Exhibit Reception & Artist Talk: “Where We Belong” Paintings by Maureen Egan

Maureen Egan‘s exhibit of original paintings, titled “Where We Belong,” will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of March.* The Public is invited to the exhibit closing reception and artist talk on Sunday, March 29, 2:00 – 4:00 PM. The talk will take place at 3:00 p.m.

Maureen Egan’s reverent and heartfelt paintings act as visual talismans, expressing a healing connection with and appreciation of life lessons, cycles of life, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world. Egan is at heart a storyteller, where reality and the imaginal worlds are often combined; her deft use of color and archetypal imagery creates resonant images that spark an uplifting inner response.

“Using color, light, and intuition, I strive to create paintings that elicit the depth of feeling I experience when in a scene in nature. For the last several years my focus has been recreating Maine scenes,
encounters that moved me during my visits around the state. Something about a place will draw my attention, causing me to linger and take the time to study the details, the light, and the perceptions of my other senses that influence the character of the experience.

“I take photographs, which later, in my studio, help me recall the fullness of memory and feeling. Sometimes I begin a painting with a title in mind (often a line from a poem) that encapsulates the tone of the experience and serves as a mantra or theme to keep me on track. I hope to convey the expansiveness, peacefulness, and joy that such experiences bring.” – Maureen Egan

To keep her work accessible to a broader audience, she also offers note cards and giclee prints of her paintings at a variety of locations in and around the state, and on her website, eganart.com.  

Prior to her painting career, Egan was an illustrator for Downeast magazine as well as Enrollment Director for the Ashwood Waldorf School in Rockport.

“My artistic practice has taught me that an image and especially color and light can truly help a person feel a comforting or empowering shift. Initially that person is me and I often turn to imagery when I am lost or troubled by a situation. When creating a scene, I listen to the painting, allowing it to evolve and guide me into the feelings that I may not have words for, but which are expressed—and lifted—into the beauty of the colors and forms that manifest on the canvas.”
