“How to Research Your Old Camden House” with Dr. Jennifer Gromada — Camden-Rockport Historical Society Series

During this year’s Discover History Month, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Dr. Jennifer Gromada for a presentation on researching Camden homes, on Tuesday, September 30, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library!

Many people are curious about their home’s history and those who lived there in the past. If you are interested in creating a more comprehensive history of a home’s ownership, which in Camden may extend back as far as the eighteenth century, historical research can be a rewarding exercise. This presentation will guide you through a variety of steps and sources to help you discover more about the history of a specific property in Camden, its owners, and residents. During this presentation you will learn:

• A brief history of the political boundaries of Camden 
• Camden-specific historical research resources, including those in the Walsh History Center
• How to use Geographic Information System (GIS) maps (Appendix A.4) 
• A description of property transfers and how to use the Knox County Registry of Deeds 
• Useful Internet sources, such as Ancestry.com, Findagrave.com, and Newspapers.com

Dr. Jennifer Gromada moved to Camden with her husband John in 2016 as the last of their seven children were finishing college. After retiring from a professional career that included executive roles in the defense, financial markets, and technology industries, she returned to school, earning a Doctorate in Arts & Letters in 2019. Jennifer currently works as an independent scholar and writer.  She serves on Camden’s Historic Resources Committee and is a member of the Camden Public Library Board of Trustees. Her publication, “House Research Guide: Discovering Your Camden Home’s History,” was the result of research conducted on her own historic home’s history.
