Camden Talks Climate: “Achieving Climate Resilience in Coastal Communities” with Parker Gassett

The Camden Public Library will host the third event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday, January 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Parker Gassett, a Camden resident and representative of UMaine, will present on “Achieving Climate Resilience in Coastal Communities” and provide an overview of available resources to enhance Camden’s understanding of and preparedness for climate change.

Gassett will also introduce the Community Resilience Workbook, which documents climate resilience initiatives in Maine and provides the tools and resources to help facilitate community climate action. He will also provide information on the newly established Maine Climate Science Information Exchange office. Audience members will have the opportunity to express their priorities and feedback to the Community Resilience Working Group of the Maine Climate Council.

Parker Gassett is the Marine and Coastal Community Specialist for the Maine Climate Science Information Exchange. Since 2020 he has been a member of the Marine Extension Team of the Maine Sea Grant Program at the University of Maine. Parker received the 2018 Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions Award: Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Research by a graduate student for a regional campaign on ocean acidification. This work continued to become his doctoral research on managing ocean climate change in the Gulf of Maine. He received the 2023 Maine Fishermen’s Forum Distinguished Service Award for supporting the virtual sessions of the conference in 2021. He is the co-editor and a primary author of the 2023 Maine Community Resilience Workbook, a framework and how-to guide for climate change assessment, collective climate action, and achieving community resilience outcomes.
