Explorations Read-Aloud: “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane

Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction.

For July 3, Coté will read aloud from Stephen Crane’s The Open Boat.

Stranded at sea together in a lifeboat off the coast of Florida after a shipwreck, four men try and struggle to return to land. The Open Boat is a tale of survival, the indifference of nature, and human connection.

The Open Boat, published in 1897, is based on Crane’s own experience from earlier that year when he survived a shipwreck off the coast of Florida while traveling to Cuba to work as a newspaper correspondent.
