SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor August 29\, Coté will read aloud from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina. \n\n\n\nSummary:  At its simplest\, Anna Karenina is a love story. \n\n\n\nIt is a portrait of a beautiful and intelligent woman whose passionate love for a handsome officer sweeps aside all other ties – to her marriage and to the network of relationships and moral values that bind the society around her. \n\n\n\nThe love affair of Anna and Vronsky is played out alongside the developing romance of Kitty and Levin\, and in the character of Levin\, closely based on Tolstoy himself\, the search for happiness takes on a deeper philosophical significance. One of the greatest novels ever written\, Anna Karenina combines penetrating psychological insight with an encyclopedic depiction of Russian life in the 1870s. \n\n\n\nThe novel takes us from high society St Petersburg to the threshing fields on Levin’s estate\, with unforgettable scenes at a Moscow ballroom\, the skating rink\, a race course\, a railway station. It creates an intricate labyrinth of connections that is profoundly satisfying\, and deeply moving. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Whale Fall" by Elizabeth O'Connor
\n\n\n\nFor August 22\, Coté will read aloud from Elizabeth O’Connor’s novel Whale Fall. \n\n\n\nSummary:  In 1938\, a dead whale washes up on the shores of remote Welsh island. For Manod\, who has spent her whole life on the island\, it feels like both a portent of doom and a symbol of what may lie beyond the island’s shores. A young woman living with her father and her sister (to whom she has reluctantly but devotedly become a mother following the death of their own mother years prior)\, Manod can’t shake her welling desire to explore life beyond the beautiful yet blisteringly harsh islands that her hardscrabble family has called home for generations. The arrival of two English ethnographers who hope to study the island culture\, then\, feels like a boon to her—both a glimpse of life outside her community and a means of escape. The longer the ethnographers stay\, the more she feels herself pulled towards them\, reckoning with a sensual awakening inside herself\, despite her misgivings that her community is being misconstrued and exoticized. With shimmering prose tempered by sharp wit\, Whale Fall tells the story of what happens when one person’s ambitions threaten the fabric of a community\, and what can happen when they are realized. O’Connor paints a portrait of a community and a woman on the precipice\, forced to confront an outside world that seems to be closing in on them. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "The Emperor of Gladness" by Ocean Vuong
\n\n\n\nFor August 15\, Coté will read aloud from Ocean Vuong’s novel The Emperor of Gladness. \n\n\n\nSummary:  The hardest thing in the world is to live only once…One late summer evening in the post-industrial town of East Gladness\, Connecticut\, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on the edge of a bridge in pelting rain\, ready to jump\, when he hears someone shout across the river. \n\n\n\n The voice belongs to Grazina\, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia\, who convinces him to take another path. Bereft and out of options\, he quickly becomes her caretaker. \n\n\n\nOver the course of the year\, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond\, one built on empathy\, spiritual reckoning\, and heartbreak\, with the power to transform Hai’s relationship to himself\, his family\, and a community on the brink.Following the cycles of history\, memory\, and time\, The Emperor of Gladness shows the profound ways in which love\, labor\, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life. \n\n\n\nAt its heart is a brave epic about what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul. \n\n\n\nHallmarks of Ocean Vuong’s writing—formal innovation\, syntactic dexterity\, and the ability to twin grit with grace through tenderness—are on full display in this story of loss\, hope\, and how far we would go to possess one of life’s most fleeting mercies: a second chance. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte
\n\n\n\nFor August 8\, Coté will read aloud from Emily Bronte’s classic novel Wuthering Heights. \n\n\n\nSummary:  One of English literature’s classic masterpieces—a gripping novel of love\, propriety\, and tragedy. Emily Brontë’s only novel endures as a work of tremendous and far-reaching influence.   \n\n\n\nLockwood\, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange\, situated on the bleak Yorkshire moors\, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights\, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before. \n\n\n\nIt is a wild\, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff\, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father. \n\n\n\nAfter Mr Earnshaw’s death\, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley into wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated. Catherine\, forced to choose between passionate\, tortured Heathcliff and gentle\, well-bred Edgar Linton\, surrendered to the expectations of her class. \n\n\n\nHeathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights\, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. \n\n\n\nAs Heathcliff’s bitterness and vengeance at his betrayal is visited upon the next generation\, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past. \n\n\n\nThe action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent\, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure\, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Last Orders" by Graham Swift
\n\n\n\nFor August 1\, Coté will read aloud from Graham Swift’s novel Last Orders. \n\n\n\nSummary:  Four men gather in a London pub. They have taken it upon themselves to carry out the last orders of Jack Dodds\, master butcher\, and deliver his ashes to the sea at Margate. \n\n\n\nFor reasons best known to herself\, Jack’s widow\, Amy\, declines to join them. \n\n\n\nOn the surface a simple tale of an increasingly bizarre day’s outing\, this Booker-prize winning\, internationally acclaimed novel is a resonant and classic exploration of the complexity and courage of ordinary lives. \n\n\n\nAs they drive towards the fulfillment of their mission\, their errand becomes an extraordinary journey into their collective and individual pasts. \n\n\n\nIntensely local but overwhelmingly universal\, faithful to the fleeting rhythms and accidental eloquence of everyday speech but also to the timeless truths of life and death\, it succeeds in being comic and heart-stopping\, affectionate and wise\, and in conferring on its stumbling\, disappointed characters an enduring decency\, dignity and depth Braiding these men’s voices\, and that of Jack’s widow\, into a choir of sorrow and resentment\, passion and regret\, Swift creates a testament to a changing England and to enduring mortality. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Don Quixote" by Miquel de Cervantes
\n\n\n\nFor July 25\, Coté will read aloud from the Edith Grossman translation of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. \n\n\n\nSummary:  The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha\, a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes was originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. \n\n\n\nThe novel is considered a founding work of Western literature and is often said to be the first modern novel. It has also been labelled by many well-known authors as the “best novel of all time” and the “best and most central work in world literature.”  \n\n\n\nDon Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world and one of the best-selling novels of all time. \n\n\n\nWidely regarded as one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written\, Don Quixote chronicles the adventures of the self-created knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire\, Sancho Panza\, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. \n\n\n\nA classic story Don Quixote  has been considered to be the first modern novel\, having stood the test of time to become irrevocably intertwined with the fabric of society. \n\n\n\nSixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote\, fed by his own delusional fantasies\, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. \n\n\n\nAt once humorous\, romantic\, and sad\, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. \n\n\n\nEdith Grossman’s definitive English translation of the Spanish masterpiece with an introduction by Harold Bloom \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share?
