She states that “things” are all vibrant materialism\, from the lowly pebble by a stream to people. We vibrantly interact with all that is around us\, and all that is around us vibrates with us. She replaces our vertical hierarchical views of life with a horizontal spectrum of vibrancy.  Without vibrant colonies sustaining us\, we would cease to exist. Don’t miss this chance to see Van Dusen’s brilliant gouache paintings and the printed books in which they appeared\, spanning his 23-year career as a children’s book author/illustrator – from Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee to BIG TRUCK Little Island. \n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome to meet Chris Van Dusen at the exhibit opening and Read and Draw event on Saturday\, May 6 at 1:00 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Chris Van Dusen\n\n\n\n\nI was born in Portland\, Maine on St. Patrick’s Day\, 1960. As a child\, my brothers and I would spend hours drawing pictures. We didn’t have video games or computers to entertain us\, so we drew instead. One of my brothers would sketch intricate war scenes. Another would draw animals so realistic you’d swear they were breathing. My specialty was aliens\, robots and monsters. \n\n\n\nDr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey were my heroes. I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up. \n\n\n\nAfter high school\, I studied fine art at The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and graduated with a BFA in 1982. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. First I was a waiter\, and then I was offered a part-time job at a magazine for teenagers. Eventually I started drawing cartoons and illustrations for the magazine and my career as an illustrator was born. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than ten years I worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in art for kids. I was doing mostly editorial work and my illustrations appeared in magazines like Nickelodeon\, Family Fun\, and Disney Adventures. One day I started thinking about drawing a picture of a boat stuck high up in a tree. I thought that would be a really funny and intriguing illustration. At the same time\, a refrain kept running through my head- “Mr. Magee and his little dog\, Dee/ Hopped in the car and drove down to the sea”. The combination of these two things eventually became my first book\, “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee” which was published in 2000. I’ve been busy writing and illustrating children’s books ever since. \n\n\n\nNow I live in a beautiful little town on the coast of Maine with my lovely wife Lori and a yellow lab named Opal. We have two sons\, our oldest\, Ethan lives in California and our younger son\, Tucker\, lives in Maine. Rosie will also discuss the various marine mammal species we see here and what to do when you spot a seal ashore. Is it in distress or just resting? With harbor seal pupping time fast approaching\, those delightful pups will soon be making their appearance on beaches and boulders. Rosie will discuss what to do and what not to do. \n\n\n\n\nRosie is the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator at Allied Whale\, College of the Atlantic. She holds a B.A. in Physiological and Neuropsychology from McGill University in her hometown of Montreal\, and an M.Sc. in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St Andrews\, Scotland. She curated the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue at Allied Whale beginning in 1998 and took on the position of stranding coordinator in 2003. She has worked with marine mammals especially seals and humpback whales in Newfoundland and Labrador\, Canada\, and the United States for over 30 years and loves giving talks about these charismatic megafauna. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllied Whale is involved in field research projects that are far ranging\, both scientifically and geographically. Our biologists and students study whales not only in the Gulf of Maine\, but often work in many other areas of the world on collaborative projects with both American and foreign institutions. Don’t miss this chance to see Van Dusen’s brilliant gouache paintings and the printed books in which they appeared\, spanning his 23-year career as a children’s book author/illustrator – from Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee to BIG TRUCK Little Island. \n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome to meet Chris Van Dusen at the exhibit opening and Read and Draw event on Saturday\, May 6 at 1:00 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Circus Ship by Chis Van Dusen\n\n\n\nAbout Chris Van Dusen\n\n\n\n\nI was born in Portland\, Maine on St. Patrick’s Day\, 1960. As a child\, my brothers and I would spend hours drawing pictures. We didn’t have video games or computers to entertain us\, so we drew instead. One of my brothers would sketch intricate war scenes. Another would draw animals so realistic you’d swear they were breathing. My specialty was aliens\, robots and monsters. \n\n\n\nDr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey were my heroes. I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up. \n\n\n\nAfter high school\, I studied fine art at The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and graduated with a BFA in 1982. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. First I was a waiter\, and then I was offered a part-time job at a magazine for teenagers. Eventually I started drawing cartoons and illustrations for the magazine and my career as an illustrator was born. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than ten years I worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in art for kids. I was doing mostly editorial work and my illustrations appeared in magazines like Nickelodeon\, Family Fun\, and Disney Adventures. One day I started thinking about drawing a picture of a boat stuck high up in a tree. I thought that would be a really funny and intriguing illustration. At the same time\, a refrain kept running through my head- “Mr. Magee and his little dog\, Dee/ Hopped in the car and drove down to the sea”. The combination of these two things eventually became my first book\, “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee” which was published in 2000. I’ve been busy writing and illustrating children’s books ever since. \n\n\n\nNow I live in a beautiful little town on the coast of Maine with my lovely wife Lori and a yellow lab named Opal. We have two sons\, our oldest\, Ethan lives in California and our younger son\, Tucker\, lives in Maine. For Raytheon Company he lead the development of the scalable SPY-6 solid state radar that is presently being installed on all US naval surface combatants and amphibious ships. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and holds a B.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and a M.S.E. degree in Ship Hydrodynamics. In In 2017\, Jim was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and served on the Marine Board where he was the principal advisor on autonomous marine vehicle development. We will accomplish this with a discussion of selected parts of Rovelli’s latest book\, Anaximander and the Birth of Science. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome to participate in this hybrid session\, either in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please let us know by return email (Reply All). You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting\, Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nChapter 8 of Rovelli’s book is entitled\, “What is  Science?” It explores why science can’t be reduced to verifiable predictions\, as some take to be the conclusion of philosopher of science Karl Popper; why uncertainty is the key to understanding in science; and why Kuhn’s theory of scientific revolutions  underestimates how science builds on previous scientific achievements. Instead of discarding theories and trying other ones out\, Rovelli argues\, giants like Einstein relied faithfully on the work of their predecessors but produced radical results by “changing the rules of the game” – it was the concept of time itself he took to be no longer obvious and the assumption of simultaneity that needed rethinking. Rovelli asks the obvious follow-on question: If science is always changing\, why is it reliable?  His answer: “Because at any moment in history\, this is the best description we have.” Reality is not a hypothetical or an unknowable thing. “It is that about which we do learn and know;” although our unfolding knowledge of it is fallible. \n\n\n\nIn Chapter 9\, “Between Cultural Relativism and Absolute Thought\,” Rovelli challenges the conclusion that all opinions about truth and falsehood are equally valid: “Being aware that we may be wrong is different from claiming that it is senseless to speak of right and wrong.”  We are each immersed in cultures that differ in how they shape our thinking\, but communication is possible\, and learning from one another may crucially feed the desire to know that we’ve inherited from Eve. \n\n\n\nOur ‘required’ reading will be Chapters 8 and 9 from Anaximander and the Birth of Science\, which can be obtained for free in PDF or e-book form here: https://oceanofpdf.com/authors/carlo-rovelli/pdf-epub-anaximander-and-the-nature-of-science-download/ . The short “Introduction” to the book is also helpful and to be recommended. \n\n\n\nThis meeting will be happening in person as well as on Zoom. She holds a B.A. in Physiological and Neuropsychology from McGill University in her hometown of Montreal\, and an M.Sc. in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St Andrews\, Scotland. She curated the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue at Allied Whale beginning in 1998 and took on the position of stranding coordinator in 2003. She has worked with marine mammals especially seals and humpback whales in Newfoundland and Labrador\, Canada\, and the United States for over 30 years and loves giving talks about these charismatic megafauna. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllied Whale is involved in field research projects that are far ranging\, both scientifically and geographically. Our biologists and students study whales not only in the Gulf of Maine\, but often work in many other areas of the world on collaborative projects with both American and foreign institutions. She was awarded a Maine Artist Fellowship from the Maine Arts Commission. In lieu of returning to the Arctic where she has recorded sound\, the award and the limitations from the pandemic gave her the opportunity to focus on her coastal sound series at home on the coast of Maine. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThrough the sound work she has recorded and mixed over the past fellowship year\, Dianne will introduce listeners to the beauty and the richness of sound. She will share the stories behind the sounds\, including the difficulties of field recording\, recording the navigational buoys from the water\, and the discovery of a “lost” sound. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOf her coastal sound series\, Ballon writes\, “The series includes my Boats Creaking at a Dock in Iceland\, recorded in a tiny harbor in the northwestern fjords of Iceland. Each harbor has its own distinct sound. Rocked by the motion of water\, the pull of the tide\, and a variable touch of wind\, the boats create a mesmerizing series of sounds. The sounds are introspective: both sharp and smooth\, quiet and busy\, rhythmic yet random and to me\, achingly beautiful.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDianne Ballon is a sound artist from Portland\, Maine. Her sound works have aired on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. She was awarded a Maine Artist Fellowship from the Maine Arts Commission. Her coastal sound work was featured in Yankee magazine. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDuring her Artist-in-Residency at Shenandoah National Park\, she created a sound portrait for the park. At the Goethe Institute\, she presented her sound installation Musical Instrument Dreams. For an international radio art competition\, she was awarded for her field recording of boats creaking at a dock in Iceland. Did a coyote ever lead you to a story?  Have you ever lost yourself in the blue-black eye of a raven?  Imagine three such creatures transitioning from people to animals and back\, walking along a desert highway dressed in their finest three-piece suits: ribbon shirts\, jeans\, and moccasins\, foraging a city alley for supper\, or sharing stories under a starlit sky. If you listen closely\, you could learn something from these three magical creatures. In his first book of poems\, Jason Grundstrom-Whitney introduces us to numerous variations of this American trio. Sometimes Bear gets his paw stuck in a back-street dumpster. Coyote shows people how to trick themselves. NF 07/1980\, p. 32]\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNational Fisherman was introduced in 1954 as a monthly publication focused\, then and now\, on commercial fishermen: the industry that surrounds them\, the boats they use\, and the gear they rely on. Fishermen weren’t the only audience\, however\, and for many years\, it was known as “the saltiest magazine on the newsstand”— a good part of its readership owned pleasure boats\, wanted to build\, or were just interested in maritime history. National Fisherman covered it all: fishing\, building and repairing small boats\, trending maritime equipment and supplies\, the ordinary drama of life and work at sea\, present and past. An upcoming photo book by long-time NF contributor\, Michael Crowley\, will explore stories from the archives of the magazine. This exhibit draws directly from his book and research\, and of course from the National Fisherman Collection at Penobscot Marine Museum. \n\n\n\nPMM warmly thanks Diversified Communications\, the parent company of the magazine who donated the NF photographs here in 2012\, for their generous financial support of the exhibit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, April 27th at 6:30 pm\, Michael Crowley\, author of the forthcoming book Working the Sea\, will give an illustrated talk on his experience writing and editing for National Fisherman magazine.  As Boats & Gear editor at NF\, he provided stories on boatbuilding\, boat repair\, and fishing gear. The geographic coverage of his work included New England\, the South Atlantic\, Gulf\, West Coast and Alaska. He wrote many pieces himself\, and assigned and edited the rest. The PWH mission also lessens the impact on our environment and helps to lower health care costs by reducing disposal fees. \n\n\n\nInitially a Registered Nurse\, Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in nursing administration in the US and abroad. As a healthcare leader\, Elizabeth has demonstrated exceptional collaborative leadership focusing on proactive change and innovative ideas that create a synergy among many. \n\n\n\nThroughout her career\, Elizabeth has demonstrated a commitment to the importance of giving back: “We can all make a difference in our world\, and all we have to do is try.” Elizabeth holds graduate degrees from Boston University School of Medicine and Public Health\, St Joseph’s College\, and the University of Maine. She also holds undergraduate degrees from American University Washington DC and Northeastern University.  In addition\, she was recently featured on CNN’s Great Big Story and in the Sustainability Issue of Oprah Magazine.  Her efforts to focus on the medical supply chain and how best to direct it to help those less fortunate have resulted in numerous awards and speaking engagements for businesses and healthcare organizations. The primary route was the TransAmerica Trail\, a transcontinental recreational route that is suitable for dual-sport motorcycles and 4X4 vehicles. She owns her own small business\, Bird Diva Consulting\, which provides presentations\, outings\, and online courses for folks interested in exploring their connection with birds. Bridget is a certified Kripalu Mindfulness Outdoor Guide\, and has worked for the Audubon Society in Vermont\, Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts.
