SUMMARY:Jazz in June: The UMaine Jazz Ensemble - Now at First Congregational Church
DESCRIPTION:Due to forecasted rain\, this concert will now take place at the First Congregational Church at 55 Elm Street in Camden instead of the Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Jazz in June festival in Camden on June 16 and 17\, the UMaine Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the First Congregational Church at 55 Elm Street in Camden on Saturday\, June 17 at 1:00. This concert is FREE and open to the public! \n\n\n\nThe UMaine Jazz Ensemble began in the 1970’s as the Twentieth Century Music Ensemble under the direction of Don Stratton.  Later directed by Karel Lidral\, Jack Burt and Dan Barrett\, the band has performed throughout Maine and New England\, from Boston to Eastport and supported guest artists such as Al Cohn\, Brad Terry\, Don Diane\, Bob Keller\, David Wells\, Thomas Gnash\, Trent Austin\, Nadjie Noordhuis\, Aubrey Logan\, and others.  Made up of students from various departments at the university\, the band’s repertoire often features new compositions and arrangements by its members in addition to classic big band music dating back to the swing era.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n​The Jazz Studies program at the University of Maine features a major and minor in jazz studies\, two big bands\, several jazz combos\, and nine jazz faculty who direct the ensembles\, teach academic courses and applied lessons\, and perform with UMaine’s faculty jazz ensemble. \n\n\n\nVisit www.jazzinjunecamdenme.com for the full weekend schedule!

SUMMARY:Songwriters Coffeehouse in the Picker Room
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host its first Coffeehouse in over three years on June 8\, 2023 at 6:30 PM\, in person in the Picker Room\, with live music from the library’s Songwriters Sessions. There is no charge for admission although donations will be accepted. Coffee\, tea\, and refreshments will be available! Enjoy the music and celebrate continuing the the Songwriters Coffeehouse tradition. \n\n\n\nThe Songwriters Coffeehouse was an annual tradition before the Coronavirus years. The Songwriters continued to write and to meet throughout the covid time\, and have a backlog of new songs they are eager to perform at the coffeehouse. “The songwriters are a remarkable group\, and have continued their songwriting and collaborations. They are a very supportive\, encouraging\, talented\, and creative group\,” said Ken Gross. “The performance on June 8 will feature a range of instruments\, from six-string guitar to piano to a cappella\, and a range of styles from singer-songwriter to folk and folk rock to country\, jazz\, and choral music.”

See you there! \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will kick off its annual “Summer Concert Series” of music and performances in the historic Camden Amphitheatre on Wednesday\, June 7 at 5:00 PM with a free public concert from the vibrant duo Kat & Brad. Pack a picnic supper\, and enjoy a musical evening with family and neighbors. Bring a camp chair or blanket for comfortable seating. In case of foul weather\, the concert will move inside the library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurrently residing in the Mystic\, Connecticut area\, Kat & Brad features Kathleen Parks (of Twisted Pine) on fiddle and vocals\, and Brad Bensko (of Bearded Cat Productions) on guitar and vocals.  Drawing from 50s and 60s pop and American Songbook standards\, Kate & Brad fuses their influences to create new original songs that sound like old Stax records. When recording their 2018 LP\, the two drew inspiration from their favorite 1950s recordings\, making full use of the delightful vintage and analog recording equipment in their home studio.  Life partners as well as musical partners\, Kat & Brad bring special chemistry and energy to their live performances. He noted\, “Telling Stone is speculative fiction. It engages you in wondering about the motives of the first artist–to record\, to venerate\, to find joy? These questions keep you reading.” \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nScott Dickerson is a conservation biologist\, hunter and gatherer\, artist\, and designer and maker of fine furniture. Now retired\, he served as executive director of Coastal Mountains Land Trust for sixteen years. He lives on a small farm in coastal Maine where he herds muskmelons and celebrates sweet corn. His first book\, To Save a River (Aperture\, 2002) tells the story of endangered Atlantic salmon in Maine’s Ducktrap River. Telling Stone is his first novel.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome the three accomplished book artists\, Joelle Webber\, Nan Haid\, and Barry McCallion for a joint exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of June*. Don’t miss this chance to these unique\, large-format artist books\, in both sculptural and codex formats with literary and artistic themes. Here\, the three artists join together in a journalistic journey of interests and personal expression\, brought to life with modern book arts materials. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet the artists during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, June 3\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n\nBarry McCallion was born in the Bronx\, New York and received degrees from Columbia College (English Literature) and Claremont Graduate University (Sculpture). His natural inclination to travel has been officially sponsored by the DAAD artist in residence program to Berlin\, the Cite des Arts Atelier in Paris and most recently\, by the Visual Arts Board of the New Zealand and Australian Arts Councils. The artist currently lives and works on the east end of Long Island\, New York. \n\n\n\nLeft: Kipling’s Kim by Barry McCallion \n\n\n\n\n\nShowing an early interest in the book arts\, Joelle Webber had the good fortune to learn from many talents in the field. She began her career providing binding support in other’s studios. Later\, she earned a certificate degree from the Iowa Center for the Book\, then home to set up Mermaid Bindery. More recently\, Joelle has begun creating her artist books and teaching workshops. She combines her forty years of collected binding techniques with her love of philosophy\, nature\, writing and sculpture. \n\n\n\nRight: Milkweed Seed Fairies by Joelle Webber \n\n\n\n\n\nNan Haid is a professor emeritus\, having taught printmaking\, drawing and design for 35 years at two colleges. She has exhibited nationally for 50 years\, including several times at the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, in Washington\, D.C. For decades\, Nan has created an ongoing series entitled NANOSECONDS. A nanosecond by definition is a very short moment. DESCRIPTION:Due to the stormy weather predicted for Friday\, the Stewardship Education Alliance (S.E.A) Fair will now take place a the CAMDEN-ROCKPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL in the gymnasium at 39 Knowlton Street\, Camden. It’s only 0.6 miles from the library! S.E.A. Fair will still take place on Friday\, June 2\, 1 – 5 PM. \n\n\n\nParking is available along Knowlton Street or in the lot at 42 Knowlton Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, June 2\, from 1 – 5 p.m.\, the Stewardship Education Alliance and its sponsors Camden Public Library\, First National Bank\, First National Wealth Management\, and Lyman Morse Boatbuilding Inc. will host the third annual S.E.A. FAIR in the Camden Amphitheatre. Throughout the afternoon\, representatives of twenty environmental organizations will offer engaging exhibits and activities for all ages\, including games and activities for elementary and middle school students. \n\n\n\nParticipating organizations include Camden Street Tree Volunteers; Center for Wildlife Studies; Coastal Mountains Land Trust; Herring Gut Coastal Science Center; Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership; Knox-Lincoln County Soil/Water Conservation District; Maine Audubon; Maine Farmland Trust; Maine Department of Agriculture Conservation & Forestry; Maine Rural Water Association; Megunticook River Citizens Advisory Council; Megunticook Watershed Association; Merryspring Nature Center; Natural Resources Council of Maine; Rockport and Camden Conservation Commissions; Stewardship Education Alliance; Tanglewood Camp/4H; Watershed School Climate Action Leadership Lab and Wild Ones Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nAdditional activities will be hosted by students and teachers from Camden Five Hills High School; Hope Elementary School; Roots & Shoots Nature-based After School Program; Seaside Village Pre-School and S.E.A. SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back!  \n\n\n\nEnjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once\, grounding and uplifting. We link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience. \n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, June 2nd through Friday\, September 29th. A limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. Join us for an immersive journey\, not only into the life of a fascinating marine mammal\, but also a story of science\, ecosystems\, and an exploration of why this smallest of marine mammals has taught us so much about the world we live in. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. His research investigates i) the ways in which health and disease can impact\, or be used to measure\, conservation outcomes; ii) drivers of spillover risk in emerging infectious disease and iii) the intersection of behavioral/foraging ecology and animal health.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTristan provides field veterinary services and consults on wildlife health management for state and federal governments as well as conservation NGOs and some of the world’s finest zoos and aquaria. DESCRIPTION:Beginning May 27\, 2023\, the library will be holding a used book sale in the rotunda. There is something for everyone! Books are organized into categories for straightforward and fun perusing. Included will be fiction\, US and world history\, Maine and New England\, marine\, cooking\, gardening\, children’s\, and young adult books. Hardcovers are $3\, trade paperbacks are $2\, and children’s/YA books are $1-2. A selection of special books will also be available\, priced as marked. The Rotunda book sale will run through the Fourth of July. This is a great chance to add books to your personal library or buy gifts. \n\n\n\nBook sales like this one are very important fundraisers for the library—and you can’t beat our prices! Buying gently used books is also environmentally friendly. Shopping locally helps keep our library and community strong\, and we truly appreciate your support!

SUMMARY:A Miscellany of Salt Cod & Islands with Linda Buckmaster
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes writer Linda Buckmaster for a reading and discussion of her hybrid memoir\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands. Elemental is the first installment in a series of creative and eclectic responses to the beauty and realities of islands in Maine\, Newfoundland\, and northwest Scotland. In Elemental\, Linda Buckmaster follows the call of the elements—rock\, sea\, sky\, wind. Elemental is also one of three finalists for a 2023 Maine Literary Award in the Excellence in Publishing category. \n\n\n\nThrough essay\, poetry\, and fiction\, Linda traces the imprint of the lowly salt cod over time in communities across the North Atlantic and Caribbean. The books is beautifully designed throughout by Graphic Artist Lori Harley in Portland. Previously an editor for National Fisherman magazine and former Poet Laureate of Belfast\, Linda knits fact and lyric into her narrative net. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program that will take place in-person as well as on Zoom. She has held residencies at Vermont Studios Center\, Atlantic Center for the Arts\, and Obras Foundation among others. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her hybrid memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her latest hybrid\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press\, 2022)\, is the first installment of a multimedia North Atlantic Rim Project. \n\n\n\nPoet and Gulf of Maine Books owner Gary Lawless says\, “Linda Buckmaster follows the sea ways\, follows the cod lines\, follows the northlands of her heart—a journey worth following. We follow the mixed history of cod\, humans\, and place as Linda searches for a proper engagement with islands that humans have been influencing since the glaciers receded. Years later\, her father has disappeared and the country is at war. She is the sole provider for her mother and severely disabled sister. At a nightclub\, she chances to meet Dexter Styles again\, and she begins to understand the complexity of her father’s life and the reasons he might have vanished.

Dr. Reynolds will be discussing the biology and conservation of New England’s bats. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. To attend via Zoom\, use this link to register:https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_TAOTsji0TdmoLVxoMFCseA \n\n\n\nTemperate bats are ubiquitous throughout Maine\, from the interior forests of northern Maine to the urban centers of Augusta and Portland\, and along the coast and off-shore environment all the way to New Brunswick. Despite being found throughout the state\, bats in the northeast are suffering from massive die-offs and conservation threats\, including invasive disease\, climate change\, and renewable energy development. Join us as we explore the biology and conservation of these amazing mammals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Scott Reynolds is a Center for Wildlife Studies Instructor\, a member of the Science Faculty at St. Paul’s School in Concord\, New Hampshire\, and a founding Partner at North East Ecological Services\,  a biological consultancy focused on the population biology and conservation of temperate bats. His work focuses on the population biology and reproductive energetics of temperate bats\, including the winter ecology of hibernating bats. He works with both undergraduate and graduate students as well as a variety of collaborators from state and federal agencies to collect field data needed to make informed conservation and species management policies. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month for reading and discussion.  \n\n\n\nAt its regular third-Tuesday-of-the-month gathering — on May 16\, from 3:30-5:30 pm — the Camden Philosophical Society is turning to a contemporary exploration of humanity’s relationship to the non-human world and the question of what has “agency.” The readings are from political theorist Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things. All are welcome to participate in this hybrid session\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please let us know by return email (Reply All). You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting\, Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBennett says we must throw away the antiquated idea that there is a hierarchy of life\, with humanity sitting at the pinnacle of creation.  She challenges even our notions of what constitutes life. She states that “things” are all vibrant materialism\, from the lowly pebble by a stream to people. We vibrantly interact with all that is around us\, and all that is around us vibrates with us. She replaces our vertical hierarchical views of life with a horizontal spectrum of vibrancy.  Without vibrant colonies sustaining us\, we would cease to exist. Society member Mike Beaudry also recommends chapter 7\, in which she starts by discussing Darwin and earthworms and ends by redefining the demos. She says we must include the inert\, plant\, animal and technological at the table in her new definition of democracy. The book is “an easy but profound read\,” in Mike’s words.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome children’s book author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen for an exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery of original illustrations from his picture books during the month of May*. Don’t miss this chance to see Van Dusen’s brilliant gouache paintings and the printed books in which they appeared\, spanning his 23-year career as a children’s book author/illustrator – from Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee to BIG TRUCK Little Island. \n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome to meet Chris Van Dusen at the exhibit opening and Read and Draw event on Saturday\, May 6 at 1:00 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Chris Van Dusen\n\n\n\n\nI was born in Portland\, Maine on St. Patrick’s Day\, 1960. As a child\, my brothers and I would spend hours drawing pictures. We didn’t have video games or computers to entertain us\, so we drew instead. One of my brothers would sketch intricate war scenes. Another would draw animals so realistic you’d swear they were breathing. My specialty was aliens\, robots and monsters. \n\n\n\nDr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey were my heroes. I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up. \n\n\n\nAfter high school\, I studied fine art at The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and graduated with a BFA in 1982. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. First I was a waiter\, and then I was offered a part-time job at a magazine for teenagers. Eventually I started drawing cartoons and illustrations for the magazine and my career as an illustrator was born. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than ten years I worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in art for kids. I was doing mostly editorial work and my illustrations appeared in magazines like Nickelodeon\, Family Fun\, and Disney Adventures. One day I started thinking about drawing a picture of a boat stuck high up in a tree. I thought that would be a really funny and intriguing illustration. At the same time\, a refrain kept running through my head- “Mr. Magee and his little dog\, Dee/ Hopped in the car and drove down to the sea”. The combination of these two things eventually became my first book\, “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee” which was published in 2000. I’ve been busy writing and illustrating children’s books ever since. \n\n\n\nNow I live in a beautiful little town on the coast of Maine with my lovely wife Lori and a yellow lab named Opal. We have two sons\, our oldest\, Ethan lives in California and our younger son\, Tucker\, lives in Maine. Life is good. \n\n\n\n\nChris Van Dusen

Or a sculpture sitting for decades in a public garden\, only to be found out as an Italian treasure?  After Mallory Mortillaro found herself in the middle of her own art history discovery when she uncovered the provenance of a Rodin sculpture sitting in a New Jersey town hall\, she learned just how many times this has happened before.  This lecture explores the stories of several different important and valuable works of art that have been rediscovered in unexpected places.  We will learn about each piece and artist\, and how the piece got to be lost\, and then found. \n\n\n\nThis program will take place on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation by Rosemary Seton\, Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator at Allied Whale on the marine mammal stranding response in northeastern Maine. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Use this link to register on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-8nitJDGS-GrU7BnCWmIBQ \n\n\n\nRosemary Seton\, the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator at Allied Whale\, the marine mammal lab at College of the Atlantic\, will talk about marine mammal stranding response from Rockland to Calais. Rosie will also discuss the various marine mammal species we see here and what to do when you spot a seal ashore. Is it in distress or just resting? With harbor seal pupping time fast approaching\, those delightful pups will soon be making their appearance on beaches and boulders. Rosie will discuss what to do and what not to do. \n\n\n\n\nRosie is the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator at Allied Whale\, College of the Atlantic. She holds a B.A. in Physiological and Neuropsychology from McGill University in her hometown of Montreal\, and an M.Sc. in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St Andrews\, Scotland. She curated the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue at Allied Whale beginning in 1998 and took on the position of stranding coordinator in 2003. She has worked with marine mammals especially seals and humpback whales in Newfoundland and Labrador\, Canada\, and the United States for over 30 years and loves giving talks about these charismatic megafauna. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllied Whale is involved in field research projects that are far ranging\, both scientifically and geographically. Our biologists and students study whales not only in the Gulf of Maine\, but often work in many other areas of the world on collaborative projects with both American and foreign institutions. In recent years\, our researchers’ studies have taken them to Canada (finback\, humpback and right whales in the Bay of Fundy\, finbacks off Nova Scotia in winter\, and humpbacks off Newfoundland)\, the Antarctic (humpback whales)\, New Zealand (Hector’s dolphins)\, Dominican Republic (humpback whale breeding and calving ground)\, and Bermuda (humpback whale migration). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Center for Wildlife Studies is to provide accessible environmental education worldwide and promote wildlife conservation through science. \n\n\n\nLearn more about CWS by visiting their website: centerforwildlifestudies.org \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll also join for future programs in the “Wild Maine” Series at the library on May 18 and May 30\, 2023.
