SUMMARY:Camden Rotary Club's "Music By the Sea" in the Amphitheatre and Village Green
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Rotary Club’s annual Music by the Sea celebration will bring three free concerts to the Camden Library Amphitheatre and one to the Camden Village Green on Tuesday\, July 4. \n\n\n\nThe music\, made possible by the generous sponsorships from local individuals and businesses\, will start at noon and continue into the evening: \n\n\n\n12:00 -1:00 PM  Bay Chamber Concerts Jazz Ensemble (Village Green)2:00 – 3:15 PM   Midcoast Symphony Orchestra (Library Amphitheatre)4:00 – 5:00 PM   Folk Duo Elsie & Ethan (Library Amphitheatre)6:00 – 7:15 PM  The Right Track R&B/Soul/Funk (Library Amphitheatre) \n\n\n\nThe rain date for this event is Monday\, July 3. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Bay Chamber Music School teaches jazz in a supportive environment by using simple jazz/blues tunes to learn the key components of jazz: rhythm\, harmony\, melody\, improvisation\, and group interplay. Music by the Sea’s opening performance by the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble features faculty members and studentsperforming jazz favorites and original arrangements – a mellow start to an afternoon and evening of fine music.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Midcoast Symphony Orchestra performs a full range of classical and modern orchestral literature. This community-based organization draws players and audiences from south of Portland to Rockland along the coast and from Augusta to Lewiston-Auburn. Their music on the big day will range from Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa to Duke Ellington and John Williams. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFolk duo Elsie Gawler and Ethan Stokes Tischler perform original and traditional songs\, mixing vocal harmonies and multiple instruments. Elsie and Ethan create a rich original sound alive with their love for the music they make together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Right Track is a classic R&B/Soul/Funk band with a full horn section playing all dance music all the time. The band’s eleven members get the audience on the dance floor and keep them there with tight three-part harmonies\, world-class percussionists\, and the funkiest horn section north of Boston.  \n\n\n\nDavid Butler (bass)\, Jen Feldman (vocals)\, John Gass (trombone)\, Justin Milliken (guitar)\, Kristi Kalajian (vocals)\, Lincoln Blake (keys)\, Pete Kalajian (live sound)\, Peter Stuart (trumpet)\, Scott Kessel (sax)\, Tom Gray (vocals)\, Tom Oldakowski (drums/percussion)\, and Tom Rodman (drums/percussion) will bring an energetic close to Music by the Sea 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMusic by the Sea is a 27-year Camden Rotary Club tradition of marking Independence Day with free entertainment for locals and visitors alike. Sponsorships cover event costs and support the club’s annual grants to nonprofit organizations in Knox County and Lincolnville. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the club presented grants to the Knox Clinic\, Midcoast Recreation Center\, the Knox County Gleaners\, Penobscot Bay YMCA\, MCH Meals on Wheels\, and Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). \n\n\n\nAudience members are invited to bring picnic blankets and beach chairs to the Amphitheatre. Water and popcorn will be available\, and voluntary donations are welcome. The Camden Rotary Club meets at noon on Tuesdays either in person at the First Congregational Church in Camden or via Zoom. SUMMARY:Improving the Trails\, Improving the Experience with Trail Supervisor Erik Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Mountaintop vistas may be the destination\, but the journey is equally\, if not more important\, than the few minutes spent on top. At Camden Hills State Park\, Maine Conservation Corps and volunteers led by Trail Supervisor Erik Brooks are joining forces to improve the trails and thus the overall trail experience. Join Erik Brooks on Tuesday\, June 27 at 6:30 PM at the Camden Public Library for a presentation on what’s happening this year at Camden Hills State Park\, trail improvement strategies\, and what you can do to protect and improve trails while out enjoying them. \n\n\n\nThis program will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Register here to attend virtually: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_yVaGVd44T_Kkr7V-CKM8Sg \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErik Brooks loves to hike\, run\, climb\, and ski. The Camden Hills are his playground. With technical skills learned on the AMC’s White Mountain Professional Trail Crew\, and perspective from the ensuing decade of hiking and running and volunteering (mainly with the Maine Appalachian Trail Club)\, he is excited to be given the time and support to improve his local trails.  Trail Supervisor is a new position\, and Erik has ambitions to improve every muddy\, rutted\, slippery stretch of trail – one at a time. Drawing on 13 years of trail maintenance experience\, Erik teaches groups and individual volunteers both the how and why of trail maintenance.

SUMMARY:Author Event with Scott Dickerson: "Telling Stone" - Imagining the Origins of Paleolithic Art
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 6 at 6:30 pm\, Scott Dickerson will present a reading and conversation about his novel Telling Stone in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. \n\n\n\nClick here to register on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Ve9mNa-uTxOmQ6Gdp-yw7g \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nTelling Stone immerses readers in Paleolithic people and the art revolution they created–realities of the hunt\, conflict between band members\, sensuality of hearthmates\, and expressions of beliefs in powers using flint tools and paints. \n\n\n\nCarl Little\, the eminent Maine author\, poet\, and art critic\, reviewed Telling Stone in the April 2023 edition of the Working Waterfront. He noted\, “Telling Stone is speculative fiction. It engages you in wondering about the motives of the first artist–to record\, to venerate\, to find joy? These questions keep you reading.” \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nScott Dickerson is a conservation biologist\, hunter and gatherer\, artist\, and designer and maker of fine furniture. Now retired\, he served as executive director of Coastal Mountains Land Trust for sixteen years. He lives on a small farm in coastal Maine where he herds muskmelons and celebrates sweet corn. His first book\, To Save a River (Aperture\, 2002) tells the story of endangered Atlantic salmon in Maine’s Ducktrap River. Telling Stone is his first novel.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening and Artist Reception: Three in Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome the three accomplished book artists\, Joelle Webber\, Nan Haid\, and Barry McCallion for a joint exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of June*. Don’t miss this chance to these unique\, large-format artist books\, in both sculptural and codex formats with literary and artistic themes. Here\, the three artists join together in a journalistic journey of interests and personal expression\, brought to life with modern book arts materials. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet the artists during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, June 3\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n\nBarry McCallion was born in the Bronx\, New York and received degrees from Columbia College (English Literature) and Claremont Graduate University (Sculpture). His natural inclination to travel has been officially sponsored by the DAAD artist in residence program to Berlin\, the Cite des Arts Atelier in Paris and most recently\, by the Visual Arts Board of the New Zealand and Australian Arts Councils. The artist currently lives and works on the east end of Long Island\, New York. \n\n\n\nLeft: Kipling’s Kim by Barry McCallion \n\n\n\n\n\nShowing an early interest in the book arts\, Joelle Webber had the good fortune to learn from many talents in the field. She began her career providing binding support in other’s studios. Later\, she earned a certificate degree from the Iowa Center for the Book\, then home to set up Mermaid Bindery. More recently\, Joelle has begun creating her artist books and teaching workshops. She combines her forty years of collected binding techniques with her love of philosophy\, nature\, writing and sculpture. \n\n\n\nRight: Milkweed Seed Fairies by Joelle Webber \n\n\n\n\n\nNan Haid is a professor emeritus\, having taught printmaking\, drawing and design for 35 years at two colleges. She has exhibited nationally for 50 years\, including several times at the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, in Washington\, D.C. For decades\, Nan has created an ongoing series entitled NANOSECONDS. A nanosecond by definition is a very short moment. Her visual diaries record NAN seconds\, daily collaged squares used to form her greater book arts sculptures. \n\n\n\nLeft: Journey Quilt by Nan Haid \n\n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. Please call ahead or check our website calendar to see what’s happening daily.

SUMMARY:Three in Book Arts: Exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery

SUMMARY:Center for Wildlife Studies "Wild Maine" Series: What Have Sea Otters Ever Done For Us\, Anyway?
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues in May with a presentation by wildlife epidemiologist Dr. Tristan Burgess. Join us for an immersive journey\, not only into the life of a fascinating marine mammal\, but also a story of science\, ecosystems\, and an exploration of why this smallest of marine mammals has taught us so much about the world we live in. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. To attend via Zoom\, use this link to register:https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gTfZx2g3SaSbEdeeGDIHHA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tristan Burgess is a wildlife veterinarian and epidemiologist working primarily in marine mammal health and emerging pandemic threats. His research investigates i) the ways in which health and disease can impact\, or be used to measure\, conservation outcomes; ii) drivers of spillover risk in emerging infectious disease and iii) the intersection of behavioral/foraging ecology and animal health.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTristan provides field veterinary services and consults on wildlife health management for state and federal governments as well as conservation NGOs and some of the world’s finest zoos and aquaria. He has handled and worked with a wide range of captive and free-ranging wildlife from lions and Tasmanian devils to penguins\, pinnipeds and yes\, sea otters. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Center for Wildlife Studies is to provide accessible environmental education worldwide and promote wildlife conservation through science. \n\n\n\nLearn more about CWS by visiting their website: centerforwildlifestudies.org \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll also join for future programs in the “Wild Maine” Series at the library. SUMMARY:A Miscellany of Salt Cod & Islands with Linda Buckmaster
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes writer Linda Buckmaster for a reading and discussion of her hybrid memoir\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands. Elemental is the first installment in a series of creative and eclectic responses to the beauty and realities of islands in Maine\, Newfoundland\, and northwest Scotland. In Elemental\, Linda Buckmaster follows the call of the elements—rock\, sea\, sky\, wind. Elemental is also one of three finalists for a 2023 Maine Literary Award in the Excellence in Publishing category. \n\n\n\nThrough essay\, poetry\, and fiction\, Linda traces the imprint of the lowly salt cod over time in communities across the North Atlantic and Caribbean. The books is beautifully designed throughout by Graphic Artist Lori Harley in Portland. Previously an editor for National Fisherman magazine and former Poet Laureate of Belfast\, Linda knits fact and lyric into her narrative net. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program that will take place in-person as well as on Zoom. Use this link to register to attend virtually: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QjtlXO4-RkGBE26W9L98gQ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life\, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She has an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Her poetry\, essay\, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. She has held residencies at Vermont Studios Center\, Atlantic Center for the Arts\, and Obras Foundation among others. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her hybrid memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her latest hybrid\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press\, 2022)\, is the first installment of a multimedia North Atlantic Rim Project. \n\n\n\nPoet and Gulf of Maine Books owner Gary Lawless says\, “Linda Buckmaster follows the sea ways\, follows the cod lines\, follows the northlands of her heart—a journey worth following. We follow the mixed history of cod\, humans\, and place as Linda searches for a proper engagement with islands that humans have been influencing since the glaciers receded. Elemental\, yet rich with history\, rich with poetry\, song\, and story\, rich with the lives of many beings.” \n\n\n\nCover artwork by Belfast artists Leslie Moore (codfish) and Sheep Jones (stone house). \n\n\n\nwww.lindabuckmaster.com
