SUMMARY:Atlantic Ballet Company Presents: Cinderella
DESCRIPTION:The library will host dancers from Camden’s P2P Dance Center\, home of the Atlantic Ballet Company\, for a performance of their outdoor\, family length\, “jazzin’ Hip Hop ballet” version of the classic fairytale Cinderella. The performance will take place in the picturesque Amphitheater on Wednesday\, August 9th at 5:15 p.m. (with a rain date of August 10th). Bring your own camp chair or a blanket to sit on for this free show\, entertaining hour for toddlers and adults alike! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDancers ages five to adult perform the major roles in this comedic rendition of the fairytale. Characters include the semi-talented step sisters and eccentric stepmother\, whom the visiting Dance Teacher makes futile attempts to teach dance steps to for the upcoming ball; and the forlorn Cinderella\, who longs to be included in the festivities. \n\n\n\nAmong Cinderella’s very helpful friends are the squeaky and playful mice who lovingly create an awkward version of a ball gown for her; the Fairy Godmother and hip-hopping Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo Dancers who create Cinderella’ s magical coach ride pulled by the Winged Unicorn; and the Royal Courtiers who lead the procession of guests into the stately ballroom where the step sisters endeavor to win the heart of Prince Charming. \n\n\n\nCinderella is danced by 25 of Atlantic Ballet’s Summer “Dance Your Dream” program participants\, who meet at the P2P Dance Center in Camden three to five days a week for dance training\, Cinderella rehearsals\, swimming\, and yoga. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "A Maine Influence: Wood Sculptures by Karina Steele"
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome artist Karina Steele for a solo exhibit of her elegant and Maine-inspired bent ash wood sculptures and wall hangings\, titled “A Maine Influence\,” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of August*. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Karina Steele during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, August 5\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarina Steele‘s design inspiration is heavily influenced by her connection to nature. She grew up in Evergreen\, Colorado in the 70s and 80s\, and briefly left to attend college at Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, OR. She earned a degree in Biology\, thinking she would become a wildlife biologist. After college\, she returned to Colorado in Crested Butte where she spent 15 years in various seasonal jobs and covered many miles of snowy and dry trails. In 2013\, she shifted gears and started her journey into woodworking and furniture-making with a short course at the California College of Art. She continued her training at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport\, Maine\, where she learned the trade of furniture-making for two years. She moved permanently from Colorado to Maine in 2015 and started creating small household and kitchen objects out of her garage studio. In 2018\, she started experimenting more with bending wood and began to explore sculptural wall hangings. She now focuses on one-of-a-kind pieces for the home as well as large-scale installations for commercial spaces. Learn more about Karina and her work at www.karinaksteele.com \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. SUMMARY:Along Route 1: Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Join writer\, photographer\, and traveler Susan Bregman on Tuesday\, August 1 at 6:30 PM for a fun journey along Route 1 in Maine (including the midcoast)\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nThis program will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_40sbX6SjTruK-XeuT2z1bQ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoute 1 in Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts is an unapologetic combination of historic gravity\, exuberant entertainment\, unexpected juxtapositions\, and wonderfully kitschy roadside attractions. New England road trippers will encounter roller coasters and candlepin bowling\, lobster rolls and homemade pie\, colonial-era taverns and granite fortifications. An orange dinosaur overlooks the highway in Massachusetts\, a neon whale casts its glow in New Hampshire\, and a statue in Maine memorializes a celebrity harbor seal. Motor courts once welcomed weary travelers\, and drive-in theaters entertained vacationers on starlit summer nights. A geodesic dome is dedicated to the Maine wild blueberry\, and a quirky museum documents the history of the state’s sardine industry. A club in Massachusetts showcased jazz greats\, and a movie theater in Maine was named after a celebrated racehorse. Mile after mile\, Route 1 tells a story about history\, survival\, loss\, and change. \n\n\n\n\nWriter and photographer Susan Mara Bregman is also the author of Arcadia Publishing’s New England Neon and New England Candlepin Bowling. A native New Yorker\, she moved to Boston after graduating from college and never left. The remarkable photographs in this book came from historical societies\, museums\, libraries\, universities\, and private collections. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n106459.tif\n\n\n\nPhotos of Camden area people taken as part of his membership in a local photo club.

SUMMARY:In Person & On Zoom: Camden Philosophical Society Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month for reading and discussion. Read below to learn about the topic for the meeting on July 18. If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting\, Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nJumping off from its June discussion of German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s essay on how “Technological Thinking” turns nature — and the entire world as we perceive it — into a storehouse of “natural resources” that exist only for human exploitation\, the Camden Philosophical Society will in July discuss readings from contemporary philosopher Rahel Jaeggi’s examination of Alienation. This notion of alienation\, described by Jaeggi as being “at odds with oneself” and with the social and natural worlds\, was part of the philosophical backdrop of modernity from Rousseau through Hegel to Marx and his 20th Century heirs. But it has been largely out-of-use in recent years. Jaeggi’s aim is to reconstruct and revitalize the concept. \n\n\n\nJaeggi argues that alienation reflects a lack of meaningful relationship to oneself and others\, although she rejects the essentialist idea that this means a separation from some unchangeable “true self” or one’s genuine nature. Her reconstruction of the concept finds: “Alienation is a disturbance of the relationships by which we actively appropriate the world.”  Appropriation means making something one’s own: “[T]he possibility of appropriating something refers . . . to a subject’s power to act and form and to impose its own meaningful mark on the world it appropriates.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe key to refashioning our understanding of alienation\, then\, lies in how we establish relations to ourselves and the world — in how we take on the task “of having oneself and the world at one’s command.”  Disturbance of the process of appropriation means a failure to identify with that which we desire or do.  Success means “being the author of one’s own life.”  \n\n\n\nA brief introduction can only hint: Jaeggi’s book is rich in questions\, reflections and examples. It is available online at no charge here: https://cominsitu.files.wordpress.com/2021/01/rahel-jaeggi-alienation-1.pdf \n\n\n\nIt is recommended that participants in the discussion read\, at minimum\, pages 16-21\, 22-25\, 32-42\, 43-49\, 164-165\, and 175-179. Where a titled subsection begins part way down the page\, the reading begins and ends with the subsection. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, participants are  encouraged  to read one  of  the examples Jaeggi  explores in chapters 5\, 6\, 7\, and 8 of the second part:  the gifted mathematician who\, having become a suburban father\, finds himself hurrying  home to mow the lawn; a junior editor whose cliched speech and behaviors inauthentically mimic his boss’s mannerisms; a  feminist who realizes that she persists in habits and behaviors that do not match her ideals; someone whose lost enthusiasm for life leaves him indifferent to\, well\, whatever.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse
DESCRIPTION:There will be no Yoga on Friday\, July 14. \n\n\n\nYoga in the Amphitheatre is back! \n\n\n\nEnjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once\, grounding and uplifting. We link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience. \n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, June 2nd through Friday\, September 29th. A limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. Donations are accepted with a portion of the proceeds donated directly to Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nFor more information please text Denyse at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com \n\n\n\nYou are welcome to just “show up”\, but may want to get on my email list in case of location change due to weather.  We meet outside in most weather\, but with steady rain we will relocate to an indoor location.

SUMMARY:Camden Rotary Club's "Music By the Sea" in the Amphitheatre and Village Green
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Rotary Club’s annual Music by the Sea celebration will bring three free concerts to the Camden Library Amphitheatre and one to the Camden Village Green on Tuesday\, July 4. \n\n\n\nThe music\, made possible by the generous sponsorships from local individuals and businesses\, will start at noon and continue into the evening: \n\n\n\n12:00 -1:00 PM  Bay Chamber Concerts Jazz Ensemble (Village Green)2:00 – 3:15 PM   Midcoast Symphony Orchestra (Library Amphitheatre)4:00 – 5:00 PM   Folk Duo Elsie & Ethan (Library Amphitheatre)6:00 – 7:15 PM  The Right Track R&B/Soul/Funk (Library Amphitheatre) \n\n\n\nThe rain date for this event is Monday\, July 3. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Bay Chamber Music School teaches jazz in a supportive environment by using simple jazz/blues tunes to learn the key components of jazz: rhythm\, harmony\, melody\, improvisation\, and group interplay. Music by the Sea’s opening performance by the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble features faculty members and studentsperforming jazz favorites and original arrangements – a mellow start to an afternoon and evening of fine music.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Midcoast Symphony Orchestra performs a full range of classical and modern orchestral literature. This community-based organization draws players and audiences from south of Portland to Rockland along the coast and from Augusta to Lewiston-Auburn. Their music on the big day will range from Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa to Duke Ellington and John Williams. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFolk duo Elsie Gawler and Ethan Stokes Tischler perform original and traditional songs\, mixing vocal harmonies and multiple instruments. Elsie and Ethan create a rich original sound alive with their love for the music they make together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Right Track is a classic R&B/Soul/Funk band with a full horn section playing all dance music all the time. The band’s eleven members get the audience on the dance floor and keep them there with tight three-part harmonies\, world-class percussionists\, and the funkiest horn section north of Boston.  \n\n\n\nDavid Butler (bass)\, Jen Feldman (vocals)\, John Gass (trombone)\, Justin Milliken (guitar)\, Kristi Kalajian (vocals)\, Lincoln Blake (keys)\, Pete Kalajian (live sound)\, Peter Stuart (trumpet)\, Scott Kessel (sax)\, Tom Gray (vocals)\, Tom Oldakowski (drums/percussion)\, and Tom Rodman (drums/percussion) will bring an energetic close to Music by the Sea 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMusic by the Sea is a 27-year Camden Rotary Club tradition of marking Independence Day with free entertainment for locals and visitors alike. Sponsorships cover event costs and support the club’s annual grants to nonprofit organizations in Knox County and Lincolnville. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the club presented grants to the Knox Clinic\, Midcoast Recreation Center\, the Knox County Gleaners\, Penobscot Bay YMCA\, MCH Meals on Wheels\, and Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). \n\n\n\nAudience members are invited to bring picnic blankets and beach chairs to the Amphitheatre. Water and popcorn will be available\, and voluntary donations are welcome. The Camden Rotary Club meets at noon on Tuesdays either in person at the First Congregational Church in Camden or via Zoom.
