SUMMARY:All About iNaturalist with Roger Rittmaster and Coastal Mountains Land Trust (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, September 12\, at 6:30 pm\, the Camden Public Library\, in partnership with the Coastal Mountains Land Trust\, welcomes Maine Master Naturalist Roger Rittmaster for a fascinating and updated presentation on one of the world’s most popular and exciting nature apps\, iNaturalist. Since Rittmaster’s last talk at the Camden Public Library\, iNaturalist has grown incredibly\, in its size\, number of users\, and applications. \n\n\n\nThe program will start with the basics of using iNaturalist to identify unknown species\, and Rittmaster will demonstrate how to use the Explore function to learn more about plants and animals of interest.  He will provide tips and tricks to make the most of this tool and show how it can allow even the most amateur naturalist the ability to communicate with experts all over the world. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register HERE. \n\n\n\niNaturalist is not only an amazing app and website for identifying unknown species\, but it also offers a wealth of information on plants and animals everywhere.  It combines artificial intelligence with input from a worldwide web of natural history experts.  By serving as a collection of photos from travels\, it can also provide an easily retrievable record of where you’ve been and when. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Roger Rittmaster is a retired endocrinologist and avid nature photographer living in Camden\, Maine.  He began using iNaturalist in 2018 to identify and catalog thousands of photos of animals and plants that were collecting virtual dust on the hard drive of his computer.   Starting three years ago\, he began giving talks to promote iNaturalist as a tool for both personal education about the natural world and for teachers to introduce kids to the wonder of nature.  Roger is a Maine Master Naturalist\, Board Member of Coastal Mountains Land Trust\, Vice-President of the Maine Entomological Society\, and former Chair of the Camden Conservation Commission.

SUMMARY:Chasing Shadows: My Life Tracking the Great White Shark\, with co-author Ret Talbot
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the Picker Room and on Zoom on Tuesday\, August 22 at 6:30 PM for a reading\, discussion\, and book signings with Maine-based journalist\, science writer and author Ret Talbot. Ret Talbot is the author of the new book Chasing Shadows: My Life Tracking the Great White Shark\, written with shark biologist Greg Skomal. Scientific illustrator Karen Talbot\, who created the illustrations for the book\, will also be present to add hand-drawn\, original illustrations to a limited number of books for sale at the event. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_X064VLoRTHmbG1L8a-2xwA \n\n\n\nAttend in person for a book signings\, live science illustrations\, and more! \n\n\n\n\nRestoring an apex predator to an ecosystem is a remarkable achievement we don’t often get to celebrate\, but that’s the heart of this critically acclaimed new book. Talbot will take readers on a journey from a time when “the only good shark was a dead shark” to the recent resurgence in the white shark population in the western North Atlantic. Of course having an apex predator mere meters off many of New England’s best beaches and resort communities comes with its own set of challenges–challenges not unlike those that accompanied the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone. Talbot will share his experience writing the book and as a science writer who frequently collaborates with scientists to share complex stories of science and conservation with readers. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRet Talbot is an award-winning journalist with over two decades of experience covering stories from some of the more remote corners of the globe. From the icy summits of the Andes to the reefs of Papua New Guinea\, his assignments have taken him off the beaten track and put his readers face-to-face with stories of adventure\, new ideas and innovative approaches to commonplace and not-so-commonplace ideas and issues. Read more about Ret Talbot’s own story here. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Marine biologist Skomal (The Shark Handbook) has been a go-to scientist for info on sharks for decades. In this book\, he and journalist Talbot describe the shark for the splendid creature that it is. When the authors tell of a white shark breaching right under Skomal’s boat\, readers are reminded that humans are guests in the sea and owe it and its denizens the greatest respect. Skomal is a serious cartographer of the shark’s journey\, and readers will come to understand sharks’ fragility in a natural world that’s increasingly pressured by human interests and needs. Fans of Jaws and ‘Shark Week’ will love this book\, but it’s also a compelling read for anyone interested in oceans\, wildlife\, conservation\, or scientific adventures. An excellent title for readers who’ve ever been at the ocean’s edge and wondered what was out there.” Dorian Gossy\, Library Journal\n\n\n\n“You must not miss this fantastic book! I could not put it down.” Sy Montgomery\, New York Times bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society (In Person & On Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month for reading and discussion. Read below to learn about the topic for the meeting on July 18. If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting\, Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Even in the darkest of times we have the right to expect some illumination\, and … such illumination may well come less from theories and concepts than from the uncertain\, flickering\, and often weak light that some men and women\, in their lives and their works\, will kindle under almost all circumstances and shed over the time span that was given them on earth.” This is how historian and political philosopher Hannah Arendt described the “background” for a series of profiles of individuals that she published in 1968 under the title Men in Dark Times. Her profile of Enlightenment-era dramatist and critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing is the reading for the Camden Philosophical Society’s next discussion on Tuesday\, Aug 15\, from 3:30-5:30 pm. \n\n\n\nWhile not a contemporary of Arendt’s\, Lessing (1729-1781) heavily influenced German thought and literature in the Enlightenment era.  He was a rebel and free thinker\, often at odds with conventional religious thought. He emphasized the importance of “friendship” among people as a foundation for interaction. Friendship\, as a concept\, is understood differently for Arendt than for those who apply a more sentimental attachment to the idea. \n\n\n\nThe essay has four parts\, each one puts forward an idea of how we choose to interact with the world: through individual lives each holding their own beliefs and inflexible identities; in groups that present a united front out of a shared persecution and prejudice; people who remove themselves from the world – an inner migration; and finally\, the concept of friendship where people with differences come together in common spaces in the spirit of respect and friendship. Again\, Arendt’s concept of friendship does not entail compassion or agreement but encourages challenge with respect. \n\n\n\nA PDF of the essay that forms the reading for the Aug. 15 session is attached. \n\n\n\nThose who wish\, in addition to the Lessing essay\, to read either Arendt’s preface to Men in Dark Times or other essays on individuals including Rosa Luxemburg\, Karl Jaspers\, Walter Benjamin\, and Bertolt Brecht can find the complete book for free on the web here: https://zlib.pub/book/men-in-dark-times-3vtr485n4v90 \n\n\n\nThose who are interested can find out more about Lessing here: https://www.encyclopedia.com/humanities/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/lessing-gotthold-ephraim-1729-1781    \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nArendt.-Lessing.MeninDarkTImesDownload

SUMMARY:Atlantic Ballet Company Presents: Cinderella
DESCRIPTION:The library will host dancers from Camden’s P2P Dance Center\, home of the Atlantic Ballet Company\, for a performance of their outdoor\, family length\, “jazzin’ Hip Hop ballet” version of the classic fairytale Cinderella. The performance will take place in the picturesque Amphitheater on Wednesday\, August 9th at 5:15 p.m. (with a rain date of August 10th). Bring your own camp chair or a blanket to sit on for this free show\, entertaining hour for toddlers and adults alike! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDancers ages five to adult perform the major roles in this comedic rendition of the fairytale. Characters include the semi-talented step sisters and eccentric stepmother\, whom the visiting Dance Teacher makes futile attempts to teach dance steps to for the upcoming ball; and the forlorn Cinderella\, who longs to be included in the festivities. \n\n\n\nAmong Cinderella’s very helpful friends are the squeaky and playful mice who lovingly create an awkward version of a ball gown for her; the Fairy Godmother and hip-hopping Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo Dancers who create Cinderella’ s magical coach ride pulled by the Winged Unicorn; and the Royal Courtiers who lead the procession of guests into the stately ballroom where the step sisters endeavor to win the heart of Prince Charming. \n\n\n\nCinderella is danced by 25 of Atlantic Ballet’s Summer “Dance Your Dream” program participants\, who meet at the P2P Dance Center in Camden three to five days a week for dance training\, Cinderella rehearsals\, swimming\, and yoga. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome artist Karina Steele for a solo exhibit of her elegant and Maine-inspired bent ash wood sculptures and wall hangings\, titled “A Maine Influence\,” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of August*. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Karina Steele during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, August 5\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarina Steele‘s design inspiration is heavily influenced by her connection to nature. She grew up in Evergreen\, Colorado in the 70s and 80s\, and briefly left to attend college at Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, OR. She earned a degree in Biology\, thinking she would become a wildlife biologist. After college\, she returned to Colorado in Crested Butte where she spent 15 years in various seasonal jobs and covered many miles of snowy and dry trails. She moved permanently from Colorado to Maine in 2015 and started creating small household and kitchen objects out of her garage studio. In 2018\, she started experimenting more with bending wood and began to explore sculptural wall hangings. She now focuses on one-of-a-kind pieces for the home as well as large-scale installations for commercial spaces. Learn more about Karina and her work at www.karinaksteele.com \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. SUMMARY:Along Route 1: Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Join writer\, photographer\, and traveler Susan Bregman on Tuesday\, August 1 at 6:30 PM for a fun journey along Route 1 in Maine (including the midcoast)\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nThis program will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_40sbX6SjTruK-XeuT2z1bQ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoute 1 in Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts is an unapologetic combination of historic gravity\, exuberant entertainment\, unexpected juxtapositions\, and wonderfully kitschy roadside attractions. New England road trippers will encounter roller coasters and candlepin bowling\, lobster rolls and homemade pie\, colonial-era taverns and granite fortifications. An orange dinosaur overlooks the highway in Massachusetts\, a neon whale casts its glow in New Hampshire\, and a statue in Maine memorializes a celebrity harbor seal. Motor courts once welcomed weary travelers\, and drive-in theaters entertained vacationers on starlit summer nights. A geodesic dome is dedicated to the Maine wild blueberry\, and a quirky museum documents the history of the state’s sardine industry. A club in Massachusetts showcased jazz greats\, and a movie theater in Maine was named after a celebrated racehorse. Mile after mile\, Route 1 tells a story about history\, survival\, loss\, and change. \n\n\n\n\nWriter and photographer Susan Mara Bregman is also the author of Arcadia Publishing’s New England Neon and New England Candlepin Bowling. A native New Yorker\, she moved to Boston after graduating from college and never left. The remarkable photographs in this book came from historical societies\, museums\, libraries\, universities\, and private collections. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n106459.tif\n\n\n\nPhotos of Camden area people taken as part of his membership in a local photo club.
