SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Whale Fall" by Elizabeth O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor August 22\, Coté will read aloud from Elizabeth O’Connor’s novel Whale Fall. \n\n\n\nSummary:  In 1938\, a dead whale washes up on the shores of remote Welsh island. For Manod\, who has spent her whole life on the island\, it feels like both a portent of doom and a symbol of what may lie beyond the island’s shores. A young woman living with her father and her sister (to whom she has reluctantly but devotedly become a mother following the death of their own mother years prior)\, Manod can’t shake her welling desire to explore life beyond the beautiful yet blisteringly harsh islands that her hardscrabble family has called home for generations. The arrival of two English ethnographers who hope to study the island culture\, then\, feels like a boon to her—both a glimpse of life outside her community and a means of escape. The longer the ethnographers stay\, the more she feels herself pulled towards them\, reckoning with a sensual awakening inside herself\, despite her misgivings that her community is being misconstrued and exoticized. With shimmering prose tempered by sharp wit\, Whale Fall tells the story of what happens when one person’s ambitions threaten the fabric of a community\, and what can happen when they are realized. O’Connor paints a portrait of a community and a woman on the precipice\, forced to confront an outside world that seems to be closing in on them. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "The Emperor of Gladness" by Ocean Vuong
\n\n\n\nFor August 15\, Coté will read aloud from Ocean Vuong’s novel The Emperor of Gladness. \n\n\n\nSummary:  The hardest thing in the world is to live only once…One late summer evening in the post-industrial town of East Gladness\, Connecticut\, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on the edge of a bridge in pelting rain\, ready to jump\, when he hears someone shout across the river. \n\n\n\n The voice belongs to Grazina\, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia\, who convinces him to take another path. Bereft and out of options\, he quickly becomes her caretaker. \n\n\n\nOver the course of the year\, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond\, one built on empathy\, spiritual reckoning\, and heartbreak\, with the power to transform Hai’s relationship to himself\, his family\, and a community on the brink.Following the cycles of history\, memory\, and time\, The Emperor of Gladness shows the profound ways in which love\, labor\, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life. \n\n\n\nAt its heart is a brave epic about what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul. \n\n\n\nHallmarks of Ocean Vuong’s writing—formal innovation\, syntactic dexterity\, and the ability to twin grit with grace through tenderness—are on full display in this story of loss\, hope\, and how far we would go to possess one of life’s most fleeting mercies: a second chance. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte
\n\n\n\nFor August 8\, Coté will read aloud from Emily Bronte’s classic novel Wuthering Heights. \n\n\n\nSummary:  One of English literature’s classic masterpieces—a gripping novel of love\, propriety\, and tragedy. Emily Brontë’s only novel endures as a work of tremendous and far-reaching influence.   \n\n\n\nLockwood\, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange\, situated on the bleak Yorkshire moors\, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights\, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before. \n\n\n\nIt is a wild\, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff\, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father. \n\n\n\nAfter Mr Earnshaw’s death\, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley into wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated. Catherine\, forced to choose between passionate\, tortured Heathcliff and gentle\, well-bred Edgar Linton\, surrendered to the expectations of her class. \n\n\n\nHeathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights\, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. \n\n\n\nAs Heathcliff’s bitterness and vengeance at his betrayal is visited upon the next generation\, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past. \n\n\n\nThe action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent\, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure\, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Last Orders" by Graham Swift
\n\n\n\nFor August 1\, Coté will read aloud from Graham Swift’s novel Last Orders. \n\n\n\nSummary:  Four men gather in a London pub. They have taken it upon themselves to carry out the last orders of Jack Dodds\, master butcher\, and deliver his ashes to the sea at Margate. \n\n\n\nFor reasons best known to herself\, Jack’s widow\, Amy\, declines to join them. \n\n\n\nOn the surface a simple tale of an increasingly bizarre day’s outing\, this Booker-prize winning\, internationally acclaimed novel is a resonant and classic exploration of the complexity and courage of ordinary lives. \n\n\n\nAs they drive towards the fulfillment of their mission\, their errand becomes an extraordinary journey into their collective and individual pasts. \n\n\n\nIntensely local but overwhelmingly universal\, faithful to the fleeting rhythms and accidental eloquence of everyday speech but also to the timeless truths of life and death\, it succeeds in being comic and heart-stopping\, affectionate and wise\, and in conferring on its stumbling\, disappointed characters an enduring decency\, dignity and depth Braiding these men’s voices\, and that of Jack’s widow\, into a choir of sorrow and resentment\, passion and regret\, Swift creates a testament to a changing England and to enduring mortality. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Don Quixote" by Miquel de Cervantes
\n\n\n\nFor July 25\, Coté will read aloud from the Edith Grossman translation of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. \n\n\n\nSummary:  The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha\, a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes was originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. \n\n\n\nThe novel is considered a founding work of Western literature and is often said to be the first modern novel. It has also been labelled by many well-known authors as the “best novel of all time” and the “best and most central work in world literature.”  \n\n\n\nDon Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world and one of the best-selling novels of all time. \n\n\n\nWidely regarded as one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written\, Don Quixote chronicles the adventures of the self-created knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire\, Sancho Panza\, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. \n\n\n\nA classic story Don Quixote  has been considered to be the first modern novel\, having stood the test of time to become irrevocably intertwined with the fabric of society. \n\n\n\nSixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote\, fed by his own delusional fantasies\, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. \n\n\n\nAt once humorous\, romantic\, and sad\, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. \n\n\n\nEdith Grossman’s definitive English translation of the Spanish masterpiece with an introduction by Harold Bloom \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "The Secret Life of Sunflowers" by Marta Molnar & Dana Marton
\n\n\n\nFor July 18\, Coté will read aloud from Marta Molnar’s novel The Secret Life of Sunflowers. \n\n\n\nSummary:  In this novel\, two strong-willed women strive to build artistic\, independent lives in different centuries. \n\n\n\nHigh-powered Los Angeles–based auctioneer Emsley Wilson has a lot on her plate. She spends her days arranging political auctions for celebrity donors\, and after hours\, she has a complicated personal life to manage. \n\n\n\nHer ex-boyfriend and business partner\, Trey\, dumped Emsley for a close friend of hers who also works for their auction house. But Emsley always makes time for her grandmother Violet\, a legendary New York City artist\, gallery owner\, and socialite recovering from a stroke in a rehabilitation facility. \n\n\n\nWhen Violet sells her Greenwich Village brownstone\, Emsley’s mother insists that she clean it out because “who knows what risqué pictures of Violet with her celebrity friends might be at the house.” Violet then presses an ancient diary into Emsley’s hands before she returns to the West Coast. \n\n\n\nOn the plane\, Emsley begins to read it and is instantly transported to 19th-century Amsterdam and the life of Johanna Bonger\, van Gogh’s sister-in-law\, the wife of his brother Theo. \n\n\n\nLike Emsley\, Johanna wants to chart her own path as an independent woman. But according to Johanna’s mother\, “Women are like the canals\, steady and calm\, the supporters of life. Men are like barges traveling to the seaports\, having adventures and collecting their treasures.” \n\n\n\nEmsley barely has time to read the diary before she has to confront Trey’s plot to dissolve their business\, which transforms into a demand that she pay him $1 million within 30 days for his shares or walk away from everything she’s built. As Emsley struggles to save her business\, she is drawn into Johanna’s family life and her quest to establish van Gogh’s artistic legacy. \n\n\n\nThere is much to love in Emsley’s and Johanna’s braided storylines\, with romance\, knowledgeable references to art history\, and evocative descriptions of Amsterdam\, New York\, and Paris. \n\n\n\nMolnar’s witty dialogue advances the plot briskly; in one fun exchange\, Johanna’s brother mocks Monet’s move to Giverny\, France\, and claims that the artist’s decision to paint waterlilies “will be the end of him in the profession.” \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "M*A*S*H" by Richard Hooker
\n\n\n\nFor July 11\, Coté will read aloud from Richard Hooker’s novel M*A*S*H: A Novel about Three Army Doctors. \n\n\n\nSummary:  Before the movie\, this is the novel that gave life to Hawkeye Pierce\, Trapper John\, Hot Lips Houlihan\, Frank Burns\, Radar O’Reilly\, and the rest of the gang that made the 4077 th MASH like no other place in Korea or on earth. \n\n\n\nThe doctors who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained but\, like most soldiers sent to fight a war\, too young for the job. In the words of the author\, “a few flipped their lids\, but most of them just raised hell\, in a variety of ways and degrees.” \n\n\n\nM.A.S.H. units\, according to one doctor assigned to the unit\, “weren’t on the front lines\, but they were close. They lived and worked in tents. It was hot in the summer and colder than cold in the winter.” The operating room consisted of stretchers balanced on carpenters’ sawhorses. \n\n\n\nMany of the M.A.S.H. doctors were in their 20s\, many with little advanced surgical training. During battle campaigns\, units could see “as many as 1\,000 casualties a day.” \n\n\n\nFor fans of the movie and the series alike\, here is the original version of that perfectly corrupt football game\, those martini-laced mornings and sexual escapades\, and that unforgettable foray into assisted if incompleted suicide—all as funny and poignant now as they were before they became a part of America’s culture and heart. \n\n\n\nRichard Hooker is the pen name of former military surgeon H. Richard Hornberger. Born and raised in Trenton\, New Jersey\, he attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick\, Maine. \n\n\n\nA typescript copy of MASH\, with copyedit corrections and editor’s annotations\, is held in the Special Collections and Archives holdings of Bowdoin College\, Hooker’s alma mater.  \n\n\n\nThis is referred to in a tongue-in-cheek manner in Hooker’s later work M*A*S*H Mania (1977) when it is stated that\, “In addition to the original manuscript of MASH by Richard Hooker\, the works of Mr. Longfellow\, a nineteenth-century poet and writer\, are on display in the fictitious Androscoggin College Library”. (Androscoggin is the alma mater of fictional main character\, Hawkeye Pierce.) \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "The Lost Bookshop" by Evie Woods
\n\n\n\nFor July 4\, Coté will read aloud from the Evie Woods’ novel The Lost Bookshop. \n\n\n\nSummary:  In first-person narratives\, The Lost Bookshop alternates between the characters in two main story lines set in Dublin\, London and Paris — one  beginning in the 1920s\, the other in contemporary 2020. The two threads gradually converge for the reader in a satisfying dénouement. \n\n\n\nIn 1921\, Opaline Carlisle is in London and is being pushed into an arranged marriage by her domineering mother and brother\, Lyndon\, a veteran officer wounded in the First World War. \n\n\n\nAn independently minded young woman who cherishes freedom and adventure\, she flees to France\, rather than agree to marry\, and finds work at a bookshop\, Shakespeare and Company\, where she learns about the art of dealing in rare books and meets famous literary characters\, including the novelists James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, in contemporary Ireland\, Martha flees to Dublin to escape her own troubled past\, and finds work as a live-in housekeeper with an elderly lady\, Madame Bowden. \n\n\n\nHenry\, a scholar\, desperately in search of a possible unpublished second novel by Emily Brontë and for a lost bookshop\, which play key roles in an academic study for which he’s received funding\, also arrives in Dublin around this time. \n\n\n\nBy accidental fate or destiny he meets Martha while exploring next door at the site where he believes the lost bookshop should be located but mysteriously is not. \n\n\n\nAfter being found and committed to Connacht District Lunatic Asylum at her brother’s behest\, Opaline finally escapes and flees yet again to Dublin and sets up a bookshop there\, still hiding from her brother under the assumed name\, Miss Gray. \n\n\n\nHaving apparently disappeared from historical records makes it difficult for Henry and Martha to track her down as they try to piece together her story. \n\n\n\nAlthough the characters themselves are oblivious to the links that connect them\, slowly but surely the threads come together. With the aid of Opaline we discover that the lost bookshop has a benign will of its own as well as extraordinary magical powers. \n\n\n\nEventually the enigma of the lost bookshop is resolved. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share?
