During the month of May, the Camden Public Library will exhibit a show of paintings by well-known artist, author, and naturalist Jim Arnosky. Arnosky’s highly-regarded books for young readers inspire a love of nature. The artwork on exhibit will feature scenes of wildlife, habitat, and culture from places that he and his wife Deanna travel to in order to research his books.
This show of artwork corresponds with the Camden Public Library’s celebration of Children’s Book Week (May 2 – 8), the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. The public is invited to join the celebration by visiting the exhibit and joining Arnosky for an in-person reception at the library on Thursday, May 5, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Arnosky’s books will not be available for sale during the event, but the artist welcomes fans to bring their own copies, and he will gladly sign them. Books may be obtained from local sellers like Owl & Turtle Bookshop in Camden, or online from Amazon.
Paintings will be available for purchase, with a portion of the the proceeds benefitting the Camden Public Library.
About the Artist: Jim Arnosky was born in New York city on September 1, 1946, and grew up in Pennsylvania where nature and the lives of wild animals became life-long interests. Self-taught in art and science, he has written and illustrated over one hundred books and illustrated numerous books written by other authors — always about outdoor subjects.
With his wife Deanna as his field partner, the couple have researched, photographed, and videotaped the animals they have found in their travels. All of Arnosky’s books began on the pages of his field journals, which he still keeps to this day.
Arnosky’s books have been honored by the New York Academy of Science, The Washington Post/Childrens’ Book Guild, The Orbis Pictus Award committee, The National Science Teachers Association, The John Burroughs Association, and The American Association for Advancement of Science. He has won the Christopher Medal for uplifting works. His books have been translated and published around the world. In 1986, his now classic book “Drawing From Nature” was made into a four-part PBS series featuring Arnosky, which still can be seen on YouTube and VPBS.ORG.
