DESCRIPTION:Sumner Robert’s exhibit of original\, alphabet-inspired prints\, titled “Sumner’s Abecedary for the Advanced Reader” will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of February.* The Public is invited to the exhibit reception to view the works\, meet the artist\, and learn about his process on Saturday\, February 21\, 3:00 – 4:00 PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Abecedary is an artistic rabbit hole I fell into and which took me three years to worm my way through. I made three rules for myself: I had to progress in alphabetical order\, make no decisions or sketching more than three letters in advance\, and keep the images simple. I stuck to the first two.  \n\n\n\n“What kept me going was the fun of learning about words\, selecting and practicing appropriate letterforms\, and the challenge of creating a meaningful image within the constraints of color block printing.” — Sumner Roberts \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaving been a farmer and farrier for many years\, Sumner Roberts finally held on to the wrong horse for too long and damaged his back. Looking for something else to do with a similar level of beauty and craftsmanship but with less heavy lifting\, he happened to visit a printmaking studio and immediately knew where he wanted to be. \n\n\n\n* The Picker Room is also used for programs\, events\, and private meetings. Check the calendar and call the library to ensure the Picker Room is open for viewing.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. He will offer an important lesson in layering—how to choose the correct plants by understanding how they grow and change throughout the seasons\, how to design a layered garden\, and tips on maintaining it. To illustrate how layering works\, David will take you on a virtual tour through each part of his celebrated garden. The gardens have been featured on television and in numerous magazine publications. David is the principal of David L. Culp Designs\, owner of the galanthus nursery Brandywine Snowdrops\, and the developer of the Brandywine hybrid strain of hellebores. David has been lecturing about gardens nationwide for over 25 years\, and teaches about growing herbaceous perennials at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\nDavid is the author of The Layered Garden\, which won a Gold Medal from the Garden Writers Association for Best Overall Book of the Year. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. In 2013\, Emma formed Emma Kelly Landscape LLC as an exciting new outlet for her passion and her recent work can be seen in publications such as Maine Home & Design and the Boston Globe Magazine. Even more recently\, Emma launched ColLab\, a collaborating laboratory of five independent\, women-owned landscape architecture practices working on projects throughout the Northeast.  As a founding principal of this groundbreaking new organization\, Emma is eager to capture the synergy of working with stellar peers who can drive the creative focus of projects further and support even more complex and far-reaching project needs. \n\n\n\nEmma received her master’s degree in Landscape Architecture\, with distinction\, from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University\, as well as her undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology and Religion. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. SUMMARY:"Refugees in the Middle East and North Africa: The Politics and Lived Experiences of Displacement" with Professor Nadia El-Shaarawi (Camden Conference Community Event)
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, welcomes Professor Nadia El-Shaarawi for a presentation on Thursday\, February 12\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nThere are more than 123 million people displaced in the world today\, many of whom hail from\, or live in\, the Middle East and North Africa. Why has this region experienced so much forced migration and what is the significance of these many layered movements?  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Nadia El-Shaarawi will discuss the contours of displacement in and from the region\, with a focus on the politics of displacement and its effects on the people who live through it. We will explore histories of forced migration as well as the context and implications of displacement today.  \n\n\n\nWhile we will ground our conversation in the Middle East and North Africa\, we will also consider the relationships between migration and displacement in that region and US and global politics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNadia El-Shaarawi is author of the book Collateral Damages: Tracing the Debts and Displacements of the Iraq War\, published this year by University of California Press. This book\, based on long term ethnographic fieldwork with Iraqi refugees in Cairo\, Egypt\, seeks to tell a different story of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and the mass displacement it caused\, one that centers the stories and experiences of Iraqis. \n\n\n\nThe book critically examines the war as well as the humanitarian process of third-country refugee resettlement\, which international organizations and states hold up as one solution to displacement. She is also the co-editor\, with Stéphanie Larchanché\, of Migration and Health: Challenging the Borders of Care\, Belonging\, and Policy (Berghahn Books). \n\n\n\nNadia teaches classes on displacement\, migration\, borders\, humanitarianism\, and health in Global Studies and Anthropology at Colby College. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 39th Annual Camden Conference\, “Today’s Middle East: Power\, Politics\, & Players” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 20 – 22\, 2026.
