The public is invited to an opening reception on Tuesday\, February 4\, at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“My fantasy responds only to what I have seen in life\, to what I have personally experienced.  Studying landscapes\, objects in still life\, or models\, I discover multiple angles\, facets\, and planes that\, when represented simultaneously on a canvas\, provide a springboard to expanded and enriched understanding of the world around us.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe image is thus not the goal but rather a means of revealing meaning.  Canvases live their own lives – they might move in different planes (Winter Landscapes)\, draw you into their depths (Houses)\, or\, on the contrary\, blind you with energy (Still Life with Fish.) DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist Kelly Desrosiers for her fine art exhibit of collage-based paintings titled Winter into Spring in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of March*. The public is invited to a “Meet the Artist” teatime on Friday\, March 28\, at 3:00 PM in the Picker Room. View the exhibit before it goes away\, chat with the artist\, and enjoy light refreshments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKelly Desrosiers — Artist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“I have spent many years absorbing the experiences and knowledge that I now attempt to express through my art. The earliest years were as a dreamy\, artistic\, bookish\, loner child in the wetlands\, forests\, and flyways of northern Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nThe second phase was exploring the world through jobs and travel: as a psychiatric technician\, truck stop night shift waitress\, migrant farm laborer\, woods worker for the Alaska Forest Service\, fieldworker for researchers studying eagles\, bears\, whales and blueberries\, veterinary surgical technician\, soil mapping\, train-hopping\, cycling and hitch-hiking on this continent and others\, culminating along the way in a degree in Animal & Veterinary Science. \n\n\n\nScience was filling in the gaps in my mystical experience of the natural world\, adding layers of understanding\, grounding my poetic sensibility. A sharp left turn led to teaching art\, an undergraduate degree in art (printmaking)\, Masters and MFA (sculpture)\, and the raising of a family\, along with a small garlic farm in Unity\, my home. I have lived in and created art in Maine for 42 years. Art had claimed me\, in the end\, full circle completed. \n\n\n\nMy acrylic collage-based paintings express the mystical energy of the natural world as I first knew it in childhood\, and are created on cradled wood panels with printed tissue papers that I make myself with original stencils and stamps that I design myself. Multiple layers of transparent collage are combined with acrylic applied by brush\, in glazes\, or by liner pen as a means of drawing with paint. Layers are sanded periodically to “antique” and integrate the layered patterns. \n\n\n\nI view the overlapping of patterns as a proxy for the web of relationships in the natural world\, both visible and invisible\, and from micro to macro. The time-consuming finished works have strong compositions based on Maine landscapes and seascapes (sometimes flora or fauna) but also have layered depth\, hidden visual surprises\, and a unique textured surface. \n\n\n\nI also create watercolor/gouache paintings that are usually landscapes/seascapes but often delve into more abstraction. I mount these paintings on cradled panels and seal them with 7 coats of spray varnish to leave a protected but matte surface. \n\n\n\nMy website can be found at pointedfirsart.com. SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate Series Tackles Risk Assessment and the Insurance Industry
DESCRIPTION:CamdenCAN and the Camden Public Library\, as part of its continuing Camden Talks Climate\, is proud to present  “How to Instigate Action on Climate Change\,” with Kerry Emanuel\, Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at MIT on Thursday\, March 6\, 6:30 PM in-person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. \n\n\n\nProperty insurance rates are skyrocketing in Camden and nationwide due in large part to catastrophes like wildfires in Los Angeles and hurricanes in Florida that are caused or worsened by climate change.  \n\n\n\nYet the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change continue to rise\, and little is being done to adapt infrastructure to handle the change. Emanuel argues that this inaction and\, even worse\, migration from less risky to more risky places\, are natural consequences of tax and insurance systems that subsidize building and rebuilding in high-risk locations. SUMMARY:Book Talk: "The Shattered Curling Stone" with David Florig
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes author David Florig for a presentation of his novel\, The Shattered Curling Stone\, on Thursday\, Marcy 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the 500-year-old Scottish sport of curling\, or are simply a fan of historical fiction and Scotland\, you won’t want to miss this event. Light refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\nAudience members will learn about the special kind of ice used for curling\, as well as get a chance to see and feel curling equipment\, including a curling stone made from 60-million-year-old Scottish granite. There will be readings from both the award-winning The Stones of Ailsa Craig and The Shattered Curling Stone\, followed by a Q&A and book signing session. \n\n\n\nThe Shattered Curling Stone is a work of historical fiction\, set in late-1800s Scotland and Canada. Rich in the history of women’s curling\, The Shattered Curling Stone tells the story of Ailsa Maclaren\, a young Scottish lass who takes to the ice at twelve years old\, at a time when women were neither expected nor encouraged to play “the Roarin’ Game.” Ailsa’s curling journey takes her to the first women’s bonspiel in Scotland\, the Scottish Women’s Championship\, and the Women’s World Championship in Canada. Along the way\, she meets the charming and very\, very handsome Lucas Plotcok. And therein lies the real tale. \n\n\n\nSteeped in the history of women’s curling\, The Shattered Curling Stone stands among the select few novels centered around the 500-year-old sport of curling. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDavid Florig is a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance\, as well as a member and past-president of the Pine Tree Curling Club in Portland. The Stones of Ailsa Craig is his debut novel and is an homage to Belfast\, Maine; the glorious Maine coast; and the ancient Scottish sport of curling. \n\n\n\nDavid lives in Ocean Park\, Maine with his wife of thirty-five years\, Nancy\, and their ill-mannered rescue dog\, Molly Malone.

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: The Unsettling of America
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society on March 18 will continue along the path laid out in our February reading from Robin Wall Kimmerer\, in this case with a reading by agrarian thinker Wendell Berry\, taken from his famed 1970s work The Unsettling of America. Both sessions form part of a series of discussions by the society on capitalism and alternatives to this mode of organizing and living in human society. \n\n\n\nThe March 18 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nAs highlighted in our February discussion\, Kimmerer in Braiding Sweetgrass postulates that the ways in which we relate to the Earth affect how we relate to one another. According to Kimmerer\, we need to enter consciously into a relationship of love — the earth loves us and we love the earth. Such is the basis of the Indigenous “gift” economy\, which stands in such sharp contrast to a profit-oriented capitalist economy. \n\n\n\nLike Kimmerer\, Berry believes that how we relate to the land affects how we relate to one another. He looks at our culture’s relationship to land — exploitive\, destructive\, and indifferent — and reveals the cost we are paying ecologically\, individually\, and culturally. He calls it a disease. Being a farmer and Jeffersonian\, Berry provides a unique view into our culture. One that heavily influenced the ideals and actions of many of the “back-to-the-landers” who flocked to Maine in the 1970s\, around the time The Unsettling of America was first published. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be introduced by back-to-the-lander\, farmer\, and artisan in wood Mike Beaudry. As readings\, Mike selected the first four essays from The Unsettling of America. Among these larids are some of the most coveted bird species in the world.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a Zoom with Amar Ayyash where he will highlight key identification field marks for separating our most common gull species\, and he will also touch on some of the often-ignored topics in gull-study such as the aging process and plumage. Learn why an increasing number of people are being drawn to this family of birds and are eagerly calling themselves “larophiles”. \n\n\n\n\nAmar Ayyash is both an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for “gull recreation”. He coordinates the IOS Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan\, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com\, and is often found speaking at birding events throughout the continent. Much of his free time is dedicated to traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. Ayyash has published a number of articles on gull identification\, distribution\, and molt. He is the author of the book\, The Gull Guide. Amar lives in northern Illinois where he teaches mathematics. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes photographer John Steele for a presentation of his photography and book Mustangs: Utah’s Onaqui & Cedar Mountain Herds on Thursday\, March 27\, at 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe book features photography by John Steele over the course of his many extraordinary experiences and encounters with the Onaqui and Cedar Mountain mustang herds. Words in the book are by Silvio Calabi. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this rare and intimate view into two of Utah’s Wild Horse Herds. All are welcome and light refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe photos allow “the viewer to sit with me on Lake Bonneville’s ancient playa observing the inter workings of foals and mares\, harems and the herd itself\,” says Steele. “It took years of patience until I was allowed to be in close proximity to them.” \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout John Steele\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Steele\, photographed by Val Stephens\n\n\n\n“My early life revolved around teaching alpine skiing\, running western rivers and flying  a Hang Glider. \n\n\n\n1997 brought an old vision for me back to life. I decided to pick up a camera once again. \n\n\n\nShortly after\, in January 1998\, a gift from Mother Nature was presented — my introduction to a Harem of Wild Horses. The significance of this day would not become clear to me for years. I knew nothing about wild horses or the wild herds of the American West\, and for that matter\, had little knowledge of domesticated horses either. But seeing these creatures in the wild for the first time left me speechless. \n\n\n\nIn November 2006 another gift was bestowed in the form of a poem written by a Jungian philosopher Sam Keen entitled: The Enemy Maker: How to Make an Enemy. Instantly I knew what I needed to do\, return to Vietnam. Seven months later I walked up the Jet Way on a hot and steamy Saigon evening\, bringing back emotions of the past front and center. I was there during the war 1968-1970 but not in My Lai. \n\n\n\nThen I started the second and the most healing project\, returning five times with one more trip to do. I traveled from the China border to the Gulf of Thailand\, interviewing survivors from the My Lai massacre while attending the 40th & 50th memorial ceremonies. I have sat with my former enemy drinking home-made rice wine until we giggled like kids. I have been blessed to see what none of us who were there during the war could allow ourselves to see\, the Vietnamese people as human beings. \n\n\n\nI have had the privilege of photographing many other events\, wildlife and people; but none as important as my Wild Horses or the Vietnamese people. \n\n\n\nMy camera opened my heart\, starting a journey that I could have never imagined.” — John Steele

View the exhibit before it goes away\, chat with the artist\, and enjoy light refreshments. \n\n\n\nKelly Desrosiers — Artist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“I have spent many years absorbing the experiences and knowledge that I now attempt to express through my art. The earliest years were as a dreamy\, artistic\, bookish\, loner child in the wetlands\, forests\, and flyways of northern Wisconsin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second phase was exploring the world through jobs and travel: as a psychiatric technician\, truck stop night shift waitress\, migrant farm laborer\, woods worker for the Alaska Forest Service\, fieldworker for researchers studying eagles\, bears\, whales and blueberries\, veterinary surgical technician\, soil mapping\, train-hopping\, cycling and hitch-hiking on this continent and others\, culminating along the way in a degree in Animal & Veterinary Science. \n\n\n\nScience was filling in the gaps in my mystical experience of the natural world\, adding layers of understanding\, grounding my poetic sensibility. A sharp left turn led to teaching art\, an undergraduate degree in art (printmaking)\, Masters and MFA (sculpture)\, and the raising of a family\, along with a small garlic farm in Unity\, my home. I have lived in and created art in Maine for 42 years. Art had claimed me\, in the end\, full circle completed. \n\n\n\nMy acrylic collage-based paintings express the mystical energy of the natural world as I first knew it in childhood\, and are created on cradled wood panels with printed tissue papers that I make myself with original stencils and stamps that I design myself. Multiple layers of transparent collage are combined with acrylic applied by brush\, in glazes\, or by liner pen as a means of drawing with paint. Layers are sanded periodically to “antique” and integrate the layered patterns. \n\n\n\nI view the overlapping of patterns as a proxy for the web of relationships in the natural world\, both visible and invisible\, and from micro to macro. The time-consuming finished works have strong compositions based on Maine landscapes and seascapes (sometimes flora or fauna) but also have layered depth\, hidden visual surprises\, and a unique textured surface. \n\n\n\nI also create watercolor/gouache paintings that are usually landscapes/seascapes but often delve into more abstraction. I mount these paintings on cradled panels and seal them with 7 coats of spray varnish to leave a protected but matte surface. \n\n\n\nMy website can be found at pointedfirsart.com. SUMMARY:Open Community Conversation About Montgomery Dam and Waterfall (Non-Library Public Event)
DESCRIPTION:Although this event is taking place at Camden Public Library\, it is not a library program. However\, this event is free and open to the public and all are welcome. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to a Community Conversation on Montgomery Dam and Waterfall on two upcoming Sundays\, March 30 and April 27\, at 2:00 pm each day in the Picker Room. This event is put on by Camden’s Save the Dam Falls Committee and is not a library program. \n\n\n\nThe sessions will be modeled on previous “conversations” on civic issues in Camden. Each event will begin with an informative slide show containing an overview of the Megunticook River and a visual history of the Montgomery Dam.  The conversations about Montgomery Dam will be presented by Camden’s Save the Dam Falls Committee\, a group of citizens organized for the purpose of raising awareness of the beauty\, value\, and legacy of the waterfall and Montgomery Dam\, and dedicated to giving the citizens of Camden a chance to discuss and to vote on the future of Montgomery Dam. The committee has been gathering information and sharing it over the more than three years since the committee was formed. \n\n\n\nThe slide talk will include an illustrated timeline of the construction of the dam and discuss its place in the history and legacy of Camden. It will also address the natural history\, geology\, and other issues related to this focal point where the River Meets the Sea. The slide presentation will be followed by questions and comments from the audience.   \n\n\n\nConstruction of Montgomery Dam in the winter of 1931 as part of the landscaping for Harbor Park.
