SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Breathe in Water" Photography and Books by Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:Away from the noise of my mind\, the tranquility and mysterious nature of wateremerges inviting me to breathe \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library welcomes Sue Michlovitz for her photography and book exhibit “Breathe in Water” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of December*. The public is invited to an opening reception on Wednesday\, December 4\, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  \n\n\n\nWater is restorative and vital in all its forms. The paradox of water is in its character as peaceful yet invigorating\, both life-giving and life-threatening. My photographs shown in both prints and a fine art book\, embrace these contradictions. The blue-green colors are inspired by the seascapes of Winslow Homer and the lily ponds of Claude Monet. \n\n\n\nMy background as a physical therapist and clinical scientist inform my artistic approach. Observing the anatomy of water\, I am drawn to reflections\, refractions\, textures\, and layers of light and color. In some of my more abstracted images\, I often imagine a part or whole of a human figure\, appearing from within the shadows and layers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz reimagined her life by becoming a visual artist\, whose mediums include photography\, artist books and mixed media. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Media Arts from Maine Media College\, Rockport\, ME and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. \n\n\n\nAmong the places she has shown her art work over the last 2 years include: Cove Street Arts (Portland\, ME)\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts (Portland\, ME)\, and Photoville (Griffin Museum of Photography\, Winchester\, Mass)\, Rockport (Maine) Public Library(Rockport\, ME and Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME). One copy of the The Deluxe Edition of her book Breathe in Water was acquired by the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections. \n\n\n\nMichlovitz serves on the Board of Trustees\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA)\, Rockland\, ME. Her passions include education\, art\, community service\, and time in the outdoors. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Jon Byrer for an exhibit of his poured paintings titled “Marvelous Marbled Maine Landscapes” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of January*. The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday\, January 4\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  \n\n\n\nJon Byrer graduated from the Maine College of Art where he received a degree in photography and studied the fine arts. Jon creates oil paintings\, experimental photography\, and watercolor illustrations. He has been living and working in the midcoast area for the past 25 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“These paintings are my attempt at capturing the beauty of a fleeting moment. The sunrise over the ocean\, the clouds reflecting on the surface of a lake\, or a brief bloom of flowers. All of these moments are gone in an instant. One goal is to capture the momentary beauty around me. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPainting without brushes. At no point does a paint brush touch the canvas to manipulate the paint in this innovative process. These paintings are created by pouring numerous serendipitous puddles of enamel oil paint to create a unified image. Puddles of paint turn into landscapes\, a vase of flowers\, or even a portrait. With the canvas laid horizontally\, the paint is poured\, dripped\, and carefully drizzled out of cups. Puddle paintings are made by pouring numerous puddles of paint onto the canvas from above. This process is done from start to finish with a wet on wet paint technique over 8-12 hours. \n\n\n\nThe entire surface of the canvas is slowly covered with puddles of paint which are carefully merged into one smooth cohesive layer that dries like glass. The mixing marbled colors are frozen in place when dried but maintain their swirling sense of movement. This technique reimagines how paintings are traditionally created without using an easel or paint brush. The puddles of paint emerge as familiar scenes of Maine’s magic and the splendor of the everyday. \n\n\n\nAnother important aspect of my practice is community art. Especially art in Libraries. Libraries are for everyone; for people who are seeking new ideas. Art is for open minded people who are looking for beauty. Libraries provide me an art venue within the community. By visiting public libraries and showing my paintings\, I can bring my version of beauty to many different people who are seeking knowledge. Part of my art practice is getting the work out to the world through public libraries. Art cannot exist in isolation. DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at carving! The library’s own Amy Hand will teach this rubber stamp carving workshop for Jumpstart January on Thursday\, January 9\, at 6:00 (6 o’clock!) p.m. – 7:30 p.m. IN PERSON in the Picker Room! We require sign ups so we know how many materials to provide.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is now full. \n\n\n\nBring an idea or sketch of something you want to carve.  Amy will teach you how to create your design\, transfer it to your rubber and then learn carving techniques. This is great for experienced or newbie carvers. You will walk away with at least one completed carve and prints from the evening. \n\n\n\nThere is a $10 fee which covers the cost of rubber and a speedball carving tool with blades\, and papers to print on. DESCRIPTION:Turkey\, under President Recep Tayyip Edoğan and his party\, have become increasingly authoritarian in the past couple of decades. What does this mean for Turkey and the world? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Professor Senem Aslan for her talk\, “Erdoğan’s ‘New Turkey’: Politics of Emotions and Authoritarian Populism.” This event will take place on Saturday\, January 11 at 2:00 PM in-person at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nRecep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been in power for the last two decades\, far longer than most populist leaders. This talk will survey key political\, social\, and economic changes under Erdoğan’s rule\, examining how his regime has undermined Turkey’s fragile democratic institutions and shifted the country toward authoritarianism\, characterized by free yet unfair elections. It will discuss how emotional strategies have contributed to Erdoğan’s sustained popularity and longevity\, even in the face of significant policy failures. \n\n\n\n\nSenem Aslan is professor of Politics at Bates College. She is the author of Nation-Building in Turkey and Morocco: Governing Kurdish and Berber Dissent published by Cambridge University Press in 2015. She is currently writing a new book on performative-emotional politics in Erdoğan’s Turkey.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference\, “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

This free program will take place on Zoom on Tuesday\, January 14\, at 6:30 p.m. as part of our Jumpstart January series! \n\n\n\nLearn how to decorate sugar cookies with royal icing from the expert herself. We will be decorating penguin and snowflake sugar cookies (but what you learn can be applied to any design!) Add egg and flavor and mix well. Meanwhile\, mix dry ingredients and add one spoonful at a time until dough cleans the sides of the bowl.\n\n\n\nCut out shapes (round) and place on parchment paper. DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, January 16\, at 6:30 PM with a presentation from André Breton about his incredible adventure across the hemispheres by bicycle. \n\n\n\nAndré Breton’s ambitious journey began on September 11\, 2023\, in Cartwright\, Labrador\, Canada\, and ended 284 days later in Ushuaia\, Argentina. The primary goals of Climate Zero were twofold: to plant enough trees to zero out his 52-year carbon footprint and to ride a bicycle from 54° north to 54° south\, a complete transect of the Americas. \n\n\n\nThis program will be held in person in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nClimate Zero was an opportunity for André to challenge himself and to raise awareness about the devastating implications of climate change. His journey demonstrated that everyone can make a positive difference in the global effort to reverse climate change. André will share some of his experiences and insights from living on a bike for most of a year\, and hopes his story will inspire others to take action to address climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Pamela Cox for her talk\, “Is Democracy the Secret Sauce for Growth and Prosperity?” This event will take place on Sunday\, January 19 at 3:00 PM in-person at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nIn the last 75 years there has been an unprecedented increase in economic growth and even more importantly\, in global prosperity\, as poverty rates have plummeted and the ranks of the middle class have grown.  At the same time\, there has been an increase in the number of countries classified as democracies.  Is there a link?  Do democracies grow faster and do their citizens enjoy higher incomes and better lives?  \n\n\n\nAs challenges to democracies increase around the world – in both high income countries in Europe and the United States\, as well as in poorer countries such as India – what might this portend for future growth and prosperity? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPamela Cox is an economist with over 34 years working on economic and development issues. During her career she worked on economic issues in Latin America\, Africa\, India and East Asia. At the World Bank she served as Vice President of the Latin America region and subsequently Vice President of the East Asia Region. In these roles she was responsible for coordinating and implementing World Bank research\, activities and lending in these regions. Prior to her retirement in 2013\, she served as Senior Vice President for Strategy\, leading strategy development for the World Bank Group. She has a PhD from the Fletcher School\, Tufts University. She is currently the President of the League of Women Voters of Maine/Democracy Maine\, and serves on several other boards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference\, “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

She creates abundant\, beautiful gardens to feed them all. She holds an M.S. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University and a B.A. in Anthropology fromSonoma State University. \n\n\n\nOriginally\, she found her way to the Cornell Lab by working on a project called Habitat Network that taught people about creating habitats at home and in their communities to better support birds and other wildlife. She is involved in collaborations across the Cornell Lab and Cornell University\, where she aims to support the public in engaging in activities to better support birds and biodiversity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Garden Club is a the oldest garden club in Maine. The Club was founded in 1915 by a group of like-minded women with the mission to develop and preserve the beauty in and around Camden\, Maine. \n\n\n\nOver a century later\, our mission is to cultivate the art of gardening to its fullest sense\, develop and preserve beauty in and around Camden\, and promotes civic improvements\, education\, and conservation of natural resources.
