SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Breathe in Water" Photography and Books by Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:Away from the noise of my mind\, the tranquility and mysterious nature of wateremerges inviting me to breathe \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library welcomes Sue Michlovitz for her photography and book exhibit “Breathe in Water” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of December*. The public is invited to an opening reception on Wednesday\, December 4\, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  \n\n\n\nWater is restorative and vital in all its forms. The paradox of water is in its character as peaceful yet invigorating\, both life-giving and life-threatening. My photographs shown in both prints and a fine art book\, embrace these contradictions. The blue-green colors are inspired by the seascapes of Winslow Homer and the lily ponds of Claude Monet. \n\n\n\nMy background as a physical therapist and clinical scientist inform my artistic approach. Observing the anatomy of water\, I am drawn to reflections\, refractions\, textures\, and layers of light and color. In some of my more abstracted images\, I often imagine a part or whole of a human figure\, appearing from within the shadows and layers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz reimagined her life by becoming a visual artist\, whose mediums include photography\, artist books and mixed media. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Media Arts from Maine Media College\, Rockport\, ME and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. \n\n\n\nAmong the places she has shown her art work over the last 2 years include: Cove Street Arts (Portland\, ME)\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts (Portland\, ME)\, and Photoville (Griffin Museum of Photography\, Winchester\, Mass)\, Rockport (Maine) Public Library(Rockport\, ME and Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME). One copy of the The Deluxe Edition of her book Breathe in Water was acquired by the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections. \n\n\n\nMichlovitz serves on the Board of Trustees\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA)\, Rockland\, ME. Her passions include education\, art\, community service\, and time in the outdoors. This event is in-person only and will take place on Thursday\, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nAbout A Symmetry of Husbands\n\n\n\n\nA psychologically rich literary novel with elements of suspense\, probes the jealousy and betrayal that hide in a life-long friendship. It takes its title from a poem read by Douglas Adams at the funeral of his wife Megan\, who has died from complications of MS. He also reads\, “Grief wrongs us so. I stand\, and wait\, and cry/For the absurd forgiveness\, not knowing why.” Abigail\, Megan’s friend and caretaker on Boston’s North Shore\, has an idea why Douglas might ask for Megan’s forgiveness. It’s the reason Abigail herself might also ask forgiveness of both Megan and of Abigail’s husband\, James; neither Megan nor James knew about the affair between Douglas and Abigail. \n\n\n\n“Patricia O’Donnell writes unfailingly about the rawness of human relationships with this investigation of contradiction\, grief\, hope\, and memory. With her sparse prose\, stark honesty\, and grit\, O’Donnell lays bare the complexities of love\, infidelity\, and friendship. Kiya\, a Portland hair stylist in her early 20’s\, becomes unexpectedly pregnant and determined to keep the baby as she struggles to recover from her brother’s suicide. Peter\, the baby’s father\, wants to break away from Kiya and find love—somewhere else. Maddie\, Peter’s mother\, fights her own loneliness as she cares for Alex\, incapacitated in a nursing home. Evie\, Maddie’s mother\, appears as a young woman in the 1950’s\, searching to heal herself both emotionally and physically. \n\n\n\nThe characters’ lives spiral together\, moving with inexorable force toward an ending that takes place on an uninhabited island in Maine where the stars stand watch over lives both old and new. \n\n\n\n“A literary treat” that will resonate with readers long after the telling.” (Maine Sunday Telegram) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Patricia O’Donnell\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatricia O’Donnell  grew up in a small town in Iowa. Her BA and MA are from the University of Northern Iowa\, and her MFA in Fiction is from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She and her husband Michael Burke raised their three children–Emma\, Brendan\, and Harper–in Wilton\, Maine\, a small town which curves around the southern end of Wilson Lake.  \n\n\n\nPatricia is Professor Emerita of Creative Writing at the University of Maine at Farmington\, where she taught fiction writing and directed the BFA Program in Creative Writing. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Agni Review\, The North American Review\, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals and anthologies. Her novel\, Necessary Places\, was published by Cadent Publishing (now part of Tilbury House). Her memoir\, Waiting to Begin\, was published by Bottom Dog Press. Her collection of short fiction\, Gods for Sale\, won the Serena McDonald Kennedy Fiction Award.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to teaching at UMF\, Patricia has taught classes in creative writing at Colby College\, the Franklin County Jail\, the Maine Women’s Correctional Center\, and at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town\, South Africa.

Burrows\, one of the leading interpreters of Rilke’s writings and an award-winning translator of his poems\, to share his recently published new version of the Austrian poet’s Sonnets to Orpheus.  \n\n\n\nThis event will take place on Tuesday\, December 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the library as well as on Zoom. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging evening featuring a reading of select sonnets from Rilke’s last great poetry-cycle\, his Sonnets to Orpheus (1922/1923). Burrows\n\n\n\n\nMark S. Burrows is an award-winning poet\, translator\, and scholar. An historian of medieval mysticism\, he is a much sought-after speaker and retreat leader in the US and Europe on spirituality and the arts as transformative channels of creativity. Together with Jon Sweeney\, he has published three books of meditative poems inspired by Meister Eckhart’s writings\, most recently Meister Eckhart’s Book of Darkness and Light which was awarded the Gold Medal by the Nautilus Book Awards in 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\nHis translations of German poetry include\, most recently\, the first full-length translation of the German-Jewish poet Hilde Domin’s poems\, The Wandering Radiance: Selected Poems of Hilde Domin (2023) and a new translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus (2024). He also recently published You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke (2024)\, cowritten with Stephanie Dowrick. He lives and writes in Camden\, ME.

He has three children and three grandchildren who delight in coming to Maine every year. \n\n\n\nJoline Blais researches regenerative design\, teaches permaculture and advises the Terrell House Permaculture Center at UMaine. She is a steering committee member of CamdenCAN\, and board member of PAN (Permaculture Association of the Northeast). Past projects include co-directing LongGreenHouse\, an educational partnership with Wabanaki neighbors\, emphasizing indigenous knowledge and collaboration\, and working as a co-founding member of Belfast Ecovillage. Additionally\, Joline serves as President of the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center. She rows\, skis\, hikes\, swims\, and kayaks mostly in her home state of Maine. SUMMARY:Fighting for Freedom\, Fighting for Survival: The Revolutionary War & War of 1812 Patriots of the Tolman Cemetery in Rockland\, Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join co-author and Regent of the Lady Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Joanne Richards for a launch event featuring the newly released book\, Fighting for Freedom\, Fighting for Survival\, written by the local Lady Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This event takes place in the Picker Room on Sunday\, December 15\, at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFighting for Freedom\, Fighting for Survival recounts a unique place and period of Maine history as told through the lives of real people interred in one small cemetery in Rockland\, Maine. Patriots of the American Revolution served from Lexington to Long Island\, Quebec City to Saratoga. Sons in the War of 1812 battled trade wars\, smugglers\, and privateers with firefights in Rockland Harbor and a standoff in Camden. \n\n\n\nThese men come to life through details of their families\, community\, and occupations. Their biographies are portals to the past\, when early settlers of present-day Thomaston and Rockland fought the British and nature. Family relationships\, their homes\, and final resting places are documented. Historical and military summaries supply context. History buffs\, family detectives\, and the curious are invited into this vision of the past. \n\n\n\nCamden features in both historical events and veteran biographies within the book. The writers are grateful for the assistance of the Walsh History Center in providing research materials and moral support. A copy of the book will be donated to the Walsh History Center. Further copies will be for sale at the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoanne Richards was born in Rockland and raised in Thomaston where her family has lived since its incorporation in 1777. She have a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Trinity College in Vermont and worked in academia for 25 years before retiring. Joanne has been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for ten years during which she has been a state officer in three administrations as well as the Regent of Lady Knox Chapter for over five years.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will meet on Tuesday\, December 17\, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. EDT in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe Camden Philosophical Society is taking its exploration of philosophical questions related to artificial intelligence (AI) in a new direction in our next few sessions. We are asking how society’s approach to AI relates to capitalism. To start that ball rolling\, we will discuss definitions of capitalism at our next regularly scheduled meeting\, on Tuesday\, Dec. 17. Some of the readings have been provided as holiday gifts from our own members. \n\n\n\nSome weeks ago\, we had a request from a participant for a discussion on the topic of capitalism. We begin our readings this month with a brief article written for the online outlet The Medium in 2022 by our own Sarah Miller\, called “What Makes Capitalism Capitalism.” \n\n\n\nThe article can be found here: https://medium.com/@sarahmiller_22747/what-makes-capitalism-capitalism-51b99ae2d924. \n\n\n\nSarah asks whether capitalism is incompatible with a livable planet. If so\, why? She suggests factors important to considering the question are the incessant growth that characterizes capitalism (again\, why?)\, the work arrangements that contribute to this\, and what we might identify as the engine that makes growth an imperative: competition. In so doing\, she provides a framework for understanding what makes capitalism capitalism. \n\n\n\nTo flesh out our understanding we read a short chapter from Karl Marx’s Capital outlining a good part of the answer to Sarah’s question. In Chapter 4\, called “The General Formula for Capital\,” Marx explains how money is invested to make more money.  We all know that\, but how are we to understand its significance?  Marx picks up a distinction from Aristotle’s Politics between the art of acquiring those things needed to maintain a household and to facilitate a good life – economics – and the practice of acquiring money to make more money. For the first form of acquisition\, money is a means to facilitate the transaction; for the second\, money has become the goal of the transaction. How does that work? And what is the significance of the difference for our lives? What does it mean for money to be the end goal of the transaction? Why did Aristotle think this improper? And what does it mean for value\, what Marx calls the ‘dominant subject’ of the process\, to become the “subjective purpose” of it?  Indeed\, Marx identifies value as not only a subject\, but as an “automatic subject\,” and a “self-moving substance.”  Again\, how are we to understand these characterizations? \n\n\n\nChapter 4 can be found here: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch04.htm  \n\n\n\nOur third reading is also from Marx: An excerpt from his so-called “rough draft of Capital\,” a text called the Grundrisse. The excerpt is itself an excerpt of a section popularly known as “The Fragment on Machines.”  It illustrates two things we’re likely to overlook in reflecting on how things are produced: First\, Marx argues that with developed capitalism\, machines dominate the worker\, not the reverse: if you shovel snow\, the shovel carries your intention to the material you work on; if you’re on an assembly line\, the machine dictates what you do. Second\, Marx notices that the way our tools work is shaped by the social relations within which they evolve. Machines evolve in a way that allows them to fulfill the demands of capitalism; they develop “into a form adequate to capital.”  We want to explore the implications of these points. In particular\, do Marx’s conclusions hold for AI? \n\n\n\nSee Word document attached to this email for Marx fragment. \n\n\n\nIn her article Sarah recalls the quip that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. Worth asking then\, she suggests\, whether moving beyond capitalism is even conceivable and what that might mean. In a short excerpt from the last chapter of his book\, Capital as a Social Kind\, Howard Engelskirchen\, also of our group\, addresses that question. The excerpt begins with a section called “Overview: Winning the Battle of Democracy\,” and follows with an exploration of the democratic tasks that moving beyond capitalism might place on the agenda. The book had earlier explored the social relations of separation that characterize the fundamental structure of capitalism. \n\n\n\nNow\, Howard argues (in a passage that does not appear in the excerpt): “For one thing\, we can start from where we are. Any action\, now\, anywhere\, can be tested by the extent to which it furthers democratic forms that foster association rather than separation.” This includes such propositions as adding the right to work and earn a decent living to rights considered inalienable; participative worker control over production; and – continuing a theme of our recent sessions – democratizing the development of artificial intelligence: Eben Moglen\, of the Software Freedom Law Center\, insists on full and open access to AI; he is quoted: “Moglen’s Corollary to Faraday’s Law says\, wrap the Internet around every brain on the planet\, spin the planet. Software flows in the network. It is wrong to ask\, “What is the incentive for people to create?” It’s an emergent property of connected human minds that they do create . . . We are a social species\, and we create together; that’s our nature.”

SUMMARY:Artist Meet and Greet with Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:This month’s featured artist Sue Michlovitz is hosting an pop-up meet and greet on Saturday\, December 21\, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the Picker Room while her photography and book exhibit “Breathe in Water” is still on display. Come on by to view the exhibit and meet Sue. Refreshments will be available! \n\n\n\nWater is restorative and vital in all its forms. The paradox of water is in its character as peaceful yet invigorating\, both life-giving and life-threatening. My photographs shown in both prints and a fine art book\, embrace these contradictions. The blue-green colors are inspired by the seascapes of Winslow Homer and the lily ponds of Claude Monet. \n\n\n\nMy background as a physical therapist and clinical scientist inform my artistic approach. Observing the anatomy of water\, I am drawn to reflections\, refractions\, textures\, and layers of light and color. In some of my more abstracted images\, I often imagine a part or whole of a human figure\, appearing from within the shadows and layers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz reimagined her life by becoming a visual artist\, whose mediums include photography\, artist books and mixed media. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Media Arts from Maine Media College\, Rockport\, ME and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. \n\n\n\nAmong the places she has shown her art work over the last 2 years include: Cove Street Arts (Portland\, ME)\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts (Portland\, ME)\, and Photoville (Griffin Museum of Photography\, Winchester\, Mass)\, Rockport (Maine) Public Library(Rockport\, ME and Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME). One copy of the The Deluxe Edition of her book Breathe in Water was acquired by the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections. \n\n\n\nMichlovitz serves on the Board of Trustees\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA)\, Rockland\, ME. Her passions include education\, art\, community service\, and time in the outdoors.
