We focus on our side of an issue\, our point of view. We often see what divides us from others.  \n\n\n\nBut\, there are so many things that unite us. Sharing favorite childhood memories\, rooting for the same team\, gushing over our favorite shared authors. We’re all human and we have so many things to share with each other\, even when we feel divided—especially when we feel divided. \n\n\n\nCome together with other Mainers for this virtual program where we’ll focus on the many wonderful things that we share with each other. This isn’t the time for political debate\, so please leave your politics at the door. This is time to come together to discover what unites us.

SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate: "Town Solar—How Communities Can Support Renewable Energy and Save Money"
DESCRIPTION:Solar power is providing energy independence\, cost savings\, and reduction of fossil fuel emissions in neighboring towns. \n\n\n\nJoin this Camden Talks Climate event\, hosted by CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) in partnership with the Camden Public Library on Thursday November 14\, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. Thomaston Town Planner John Fancy and Lincolnville Town Administrator Dave Kinney will talk about how municipalities that have invested in solar arrays have reduced large electrical bills\, gone to 100% clean energy for municipal energy\, and in some places earned back significant dollars that can be reinvested in other sustainable initiatives. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy\, Thomaston’s Project Planner\, will explain how that village significantly reduced electricity bills over the last 14 years (and have paid off the bonds). Dave Kinney\, Lincolnville’s Town Administrator\, will discuss his town’s approach to going toward 100% clean energy\, providing financial benefits as well. \n\n\n\nWe’ll hear how towns are building upon those successes to reduce carbon emissions in other areas. The evening will finish with an extensive question and answer period so that attendees can discuss how Camden can move toward 100% clean municipal energy while also receiving cost savings \n\n\n\nCurrently Camden leases a solar array from Revision Energy at Sagamore Farm that covers 7 to 8% of the town’s energy needs. Town solar projects take perseverance and citizen involvement. Yet the benefits lead to reduced carbon emissions\, and often increased revenue that can be invested in other sustainable programs\, eg.\, EV chargers\, weatherization programs\, and low-income home retrofit programs. Dave has spent 4 years in the private sector and 34 years in the public sector\, currently the Town Administrator for Lincolnville. Dave is also a licensed professional engineer. Dave drives an EV. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy is a Maine native who grew up in the greater Portland area\, moved to the mid-coast in 1971\, and now lives in a totally electric home in Appleton with 18 solar panels on the roof.John spent over 50 years working with public and private water and wastewater operations\, including systems from Washington to Cumberland Counties and all in between. His specialty is finding solutions to operations that are not performing as they were designed to. John was a consultant to the Waldoboro Utility District for over 40 years and now works with the Town of Thomaston. Wastewater systems are large users of electricity since they often have high horsepower motors in pumps and process equipment. One solution now available is the use of solar panels. This was the case in Thomaston where John developed and implemented a solar program beginning in 2010. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening is being presented by CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society A.I. Series: AI and Ethics "for and to a distant future"
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will meet on Tuesday\, November 19\, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. EDT in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nTechnology has given humanity the power to radically alter or end its existence as a naturally occurring lifeform\, to drive most other animals and plants into extinction\, and to destabilize the Earth’s climate and planetary operations. What does this power — whether affected through artificial intelligence (AI)\, climate alteration\, nuclear power\, or other technologies — mean for centuries of ethical thinking that was focused narrowly on personal relationships in the here and now? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo round out its series of philosophical discussions on AI\, the Camden Philosophical Society will in November explore this momentous question\, first posed in much those words by late 20th Century German/American philosopher Hans Jonas in An Imperative of Responsibility: In Search of an Ethics for the Technological Age. \n\n\n\nThe specific reading that will guide the discussion forms the first chapter of that book and was published separately as an article entitled “Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New Tasks of Ethics.” \n\n\n\nIn the reading\, Jonas starts with the proposition that “modern technology has turned into an infinite forward thrust of the [human] race… whose success [at achieving] maximal control over things and himself appears as the consummation of his destiny.” \n\n\n\nArguably foreshadowing the rise of the prestige and stock-market value of giant US tech companies\, he notes that modern technology not only creates through its success a positive\, self-reinforcing feedback loop\, it starves “whatever else belongs to the fullness of man.” It has “obliterated” the distinction between artificial and natural and between nature and mechanical creations of man. \n\n\n\nInstead of looking back at humanity’s frequent assumption that it holds rights over non-human creatures and even the Earth itself — “dominion” in Anglophone Christian terminology – Jonas contends that our technological power has given us novel responsibilities to protect the non-human world. Has “the biosphere as a whole and in its parts\, now subject to our power … become a human trust [that] has something of a moral claim on us not only for our ulterior sake but for its own and in its own right?” \n\n\n\nThese issues are raised within the context of specific technological advances\, including the potential that humanity will learn to indefinitely extend individual human lives and to alter human behavior and learning capacity to benefit social aims\, rather than individual desires. \n\n\n\nAnother aspect of the “new ethics of responsibility for and to a distant future” that Jonas flags is “the doubt it casts on the capacity of representative government\, operating by its normal principals and procedures\, to meet the new demands.” \n\n\n\nThe reading can be found online here: https://inters.org/jonas-technology-responsability Alternatively\, you can read Chapter 1 of The Imperative of Responsibility\, entitled “The Altered Nature of Human Responsibility.”  If reading time is short\, Section IV\, “Earlier Forms of Future Oriented Ethics\,” can be skipped\, as it will probably not be central to the discussion.

DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, November 21\, at 6:30 PM with a presentation with Chris Lewey\, Sharon Fisher\, and Jane Lounsbury\, siblings and co-authors of The Science of Watching\, the Art of Seeing\, and The Power of Nature Absorption. This event will take place in-person at the Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscover a simple compass pointing toward an enhanced natural world awareness that everyone can experience. Chris Lewey and co-authors Sharon Fisher and Jane Lounsbury present an introduction to their newly released book: The Science of Watching\, The Art of Seeing\, and the Power of Nature Absorption. Just published in January\, it beautifully encapsulates the profound connections between humanity and our natural world\, offering a refreshing perspective that resonates deeply with the reader. There are books that encourage a connection with Nature on many different levels\, but we make connections with scientific facts and spiritual relationships that open us to different perspectives and increase our awareness of the sacred all around us.  \n\n\n\nNature Absorption brings about physical\, mental\, and spiritual transformations. This book is a useful tool for birders\, nature enthusiasts\, travelers\, and anyone seeking to increase their knowledge\, experience\, and insight\, going beyond identification. Join the authors in a captivating exploration of Nature Absorption\, delving into its profound impact on our lives and the extraordinary connections we share with the natural world. \n\n\n\nAbout the Authors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Lewey\, Executive Director and Founder of RAVEN Interpretive Programs\, has led tours and programs for RAVEN\, as well as such organizations as the Maine Audubon Society\, Smithsonian Study Tours\, Road Scholar\, Tauck World Discovery and the National Wildlife Federation. Chris has taught ornithology for the National Audubon Society at their Hog Island ecology camp on the coast of Maine\, where he was the Director of their Joy of Birding and Breaking into Birding programs for many years. A native New Englander and licensed Maine Guide\, Chris is very much at home on the coast or in the mountains where his fascination with wildlife and conservation is enthusiastically shared. \n\n\n\nSharon Fisher began her teaching career with a degree in history and a secondary school certification. However\, one summer in Boston\, having become involved in the administration of a Massachusetts state-wide educational program for very young\, special needs children\, her career took a major change in direction. With additional training and a second certification in elementary education\, her work with young children began. Her career spanned forty years of teaching in a variety of situations\, including both public and private schools. Sharon works for RAVEN Interpretive Programs in a number of capacities. She developed walking tours for historic places\, acts as an interpretive guide\, and presents ecological slide programs of the White Mountains. Sharon lives with her family in the White Mountains of Western Maine. \n\n\n\nJane Lounsbury left the Boston area to travel through Europe in the late sixties. Living and working in Manchester\, England; Madrid\, Spain; and Davos Dorf\, Switzerland; allowed her world perspective to be intimately shaped by many cultures and natural environments. After returning to the States and perching for a time within easy reach of the Rocky Mountains in Denver\, Colorado\, Jane migrated East\, back home to her native New England. She has over forty years’ administrative experience in a variety of fields\, including RAVEN Interpretive Programs. Jane assisted with the development of\, and participated in\, RAVEN’s wildlife trips and educational workshops. Jane now lives with her family on the “quiet side” of the White Mountains. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO \n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. SUMMARY:Jan Brett's "Alice in a Winter Wonderland" at Camden Opera House
DESCRIPTION:Join legendary children’s author/illustrator Jan Brett as she launches her book signing tour for her new picture book\, Alice in a Winter Wonderland! Set in the shimmering Alaskan tundra\, it offers a fresh lens to a familiar favorite. This event is put on by Camden Public Library and will take place at the Camden Opera House at 29 Elm Street on Saturday\, November 30\, 10:00 a.m.  \n\n\n\nEmbarking once again on a national bus tour\, this time Jan Brett will be visiting 23 cities in just 17 days in her show-stopping tour bus\, covered with characters from Alice in a Winter Wonderland –– and Camden will be one of her stops! Jan Brett will give a 20-minute drawing demonstration and talk about the inspiration behind Alice in a Winter Wonderland and her research trip to Alaska\, followed by a book signing. \n\n\n\n\nCopies of Alice in a Winter Wonderland are available for pre-order through Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop. Purchasing a book means that you will be given a wristband at the event that allows you to join the book signing line. Purchasing a book is required to join the signing line. Sherman’s will have extra copies of Alice in a Winter Wonderland and select backlist titles on-sale at the event. Arrive early! However\, we are happy to provide beautifully designed signed Jan Brett bookplates for your additional books. They are die-cut\, full-color and feature Jan’s beautiful artwork. \n\n\n\nHow can I get a good spot in the signing line? \n\n\n\nWhen you pick-up your pre-purchased book at the event\, Sherman’s will give you a wrist band with a number for the signing line. Numbers will be given out based on the order in which books arepicked-up on the day of the event\, not in which they were ordered. Camden Public Library will have craft or activities to keep families busy while they wait their turn. \n\n\n\nHow many books can I have signed?
