SUMMARY:"Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent" from the Penobscot Marine Museum\, On Exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent” from the Penobscot Marine Museum will be on view in the Picker Room Gallery at the Camden Public Library during Maritime Month this April.* \n\n\n\nJoin PMM Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for an illustrated talk at Camden Library on Tuesday\, April 16\, at 6:30 PM. The presentation will explore Moore’s life and work as a denizen of Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nSteel “boom jumper” No. 35 being launched by crane for sea trials on April 18\, 1952 at Rockland’s General Foods Shipyard.  Photo by Jim Moore\n\n\n\nAs a child\, Jim Moore had the opportunity to visit a noted news photographer’s darkroom\, which sparked a lifelong interest in cameras and photography. In 1940\, he moved to Rockland with his new bride\, Cecile\, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office\, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career\, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist\, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001.  The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse!
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to witness this historic celestial spectacle on Monday\, April 8! A partial solar eclipse will be visible in Camden (weather permitting) from 2:10 – 4:40 p.m.\, with the peak from 3:28 – 3:35 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhile this event won’t plunge Camden into complete darkness\, it promises a sight to behold as the moon partially obscures the sun and shifts the cast of the light around us. The openness of Harbor Park is a great place to view from. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSolar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth\, casting a shadow on our planet. During a partial eclipse\, only a portion of the sun is obscured\, but it still creates an awe-inspiring spectacle. \n\n\n\nYou can also drive a couple hours north to experience the drama of totality. In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press\, 2020) by Tom Verde recounts the colorful stories of nearly forty classic/unique New England vessels. These include the fabled history of the cat boat; the first fiberglass sailing yacht; a NY ferry boat repurposed as a houseboat; the oldest working fishing boat in Stonington\, CT; racing rivalries in the Sound; the French love affair with American boat designs; and the Jazz Age era of luxury yachting\, among others. In his presentation\, Verde will discuss several boats featured in his book\, including their classes and designers\, as well as their relationships to the waters in which they sailed\, raced\, cruised. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Verde is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times\, Yankee Magazine\, and on National Public Radio. He is the author of Maine Ghosts and Legends: 30 Encounters with the Supernatural (Down East Books) and In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press). He lives in Pawcatuck\, Connecticut. Marley will also add guidelines to follow and expanded resources.  This talk best serves those with a bit of knowledge and experience with mushrooms\, but is open to everyone. \n\n\n\n\nDeadly Destroying Angel and delicious Golden Chanterelles\n\n\n\nA mature Horse Mushroom; wild cousin to the Portobello\n\n\n\nThe brilliant orange Delicious Milk Cap\n\n\n\n\nGreg Marley has been collecting\, studying\, eating\, growing and teaching mushrooms for over 45 years.  He spreads his knowledge of mushrooms through walks\, talks and classes held across the New England and beyond.  Marley is the author the award-winning book Chanterelle Dreams\, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms\, (Chelsea Green\, 2010).  As a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Centers across New England\, he provides expertise in mushroom poisoning cases.  He is a frequent lecturer to college groups and a mushrooming foray faculty member.  When not mushrooming\, Marley works as a mental health clinician specializing in suicide prevention and traumatic grief.  \n\n\n\n\nA cluster of Fuzzy Foot on a dead elm tree\n\n\n\nA cluster of fall Oyster Mushrooms

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: John Dewey - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Famed early 20th Century philosopher John Dewey will provide grist for the discussion mill at the April 16 gathering of the Camden Philosophical Society. Like other ancient-to-contemporary thinkers whose ideas the society has discussed in recent months\, Dewey saw philosophy as a way of living and interacting with the world\, not merely as an academic pursuit. The hybrid gathering will be at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, April 16. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom.  \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nDewey spent the first half of the last century as the United States’ pre-eminent public philosopher\, writing on educational theory\, aesthetics\, human nature\, politics and culture\, and other topics. Born in Vermont in 1859\, he died in New York City in 1952 — so his life spanned horse-drawn carriages to jet airplanes\, muskets to hydrogen bombs. His obituary was on the front page of the New York Times. \n\n\n\nKnown as a pragmatist\, Dewey took human lived experience (described as meaningful transactions with the world) as the basis of his philosophy. In political philosophy\, he was a strong advocate for democracy\, including reforming our educational system to solicit individual traits for working in community. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy has proposed readings from Dewey’s 1927 book The Public and Its Problems: An Essay in Political Enquiry. In 1940\, he moved to Rockland with his new bride\, Cecile\, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office\, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career\, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist\, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001.  The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. In 2017\, she established “Schoodic Notes: Bird Sounds of Acadia\,” a collaborative project with Schoodic Institute’s Bird Ecology program. Along with the help of a few other natural sound recordists\, the project has archived over 1200 recordings of Acadia’s birds. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Murray Carpenter\, Maine Public\n\n\n\nLaura is also a seasoned educator and wildlife technician. She has long sought opportunities to empower others to develop their knowledge\, skills\, and experience to understand\, connect with\, and serve the natural world. She holds a Master of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA. She created and ran natural and cultural history programs for adults and families through University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center\, the National Park Service\, and many other organizations. She has also conducted track surveys of Canada Lynx via snowmobile\, and howling surveys in search of Gray Wolf\, in Maine’s North Woods. Partially retired these days\, she spends most of her free time exploring the natural world\, and especially recording natural sounds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. SUMMARY:Park Clean-Up Day: Volunteers Needed!
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is seeking volunteers to help with the annual Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday\, April 27\, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The objective will be to clean up leaves\, brush\, trash\, etc. that have accumulated over the winter and during recent storms. Volunteers should bring gloves\, leaf rakes\, weeding tools\, and pruners. Parks Director Dave Jackson will meet volunteers in the Camden Amphitheatre\, organize the crew\, and assign tasks. ALL AGES WELCOME! \n\n\n\n“The Amphitheatre needs some TLC to prepare for outdoor enjoyment in the warmer months ahead\,” says Jackson. “We are grateful for the community’s help with our National Historic Landmark!” \n\n\n\nFor more information\, and to sign-up to volunteer\, email dpjackson@librarycamden.org. SUMMARY:"Dirigo: Maine at Gettysburg" Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, in partnership with the Camden-Rockport Historical Society\, are pleased to welcome filmmaker Daniel Lambert for a feature of his documentary film\, Dirigo: Maine at Gettysburg\, on Saturday\, April 27\, 4:00 PM. This program will take place in-person only in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nFifteen units of Maine soldiers – infantry\, artillery\, and cavalry\, were all part of the Union army at Gettysburg. Their contributions were heroic and vital. What they did when they were called upon helped determine the battle and\, ultimately\, the Civil War. Wherever the action occurred at that sprawling battlefield\, Maine men were in the thick of it. From Devil’s Den to Little Round Top\, the Peach Orchard to the Wheat Field\, from Steven’s Knoll to Cemetery Ridge\, Maine men fought for the Union. Many sacrificed their lives for the idea that the United States of America was worth saving. \n\n\n\nThis film produced by Emmy-nominated Maine filmmaker\, Dan Lambert\, examines the roles of the Maine men who helped to save the nation. The film features footage captured at the Gettysburg National Battlefield over the course of two years and offers Civil War Reenactment footage captured at events at the Norlands Living History Center in Livermore\, Maine and at the Daniel Lady Farm in Gettysburg\, Pennsylvania.  \n\n\n\nThe film will be followed by Q & A and discussion with Civil War history specialist David Sulin. \n\n\n\nView the trailer here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Lambert has produced two previous films on Maine in the Civil War “Sixteenth Maine at Gettysburg in 2012”\, and “Forlorn Hope in 2019” about the ill-fated charge of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment at the 1864 Battle of Petersburg.
