SUMMARY:Center for Wildlife Studies "Wild Maine" Series: Snakes of Maine with Derek Yorks
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation by Derek Yorks\, wildlife biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and co-founder of Wild Vision Systems\, for a presentation all about the snakes of Maine. This event will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom on Tuesday\, March 5\, at 6:30 PM. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Maine is home to 9 species of snakes\, from the small and secretive ring-necked snake to the (relatively) large and easily observed northern water snake. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife keeps track of all Maine snake species and is actively studying populations of Maine’s largest and rarest snake\, the State Endangered northern black racer. \n\n\n\n\nDerek Yorks\, M.S.\, Wildlife Biologist – Derek serves as the Department’s lead biologist on reptile and amphibian issues\, where he coordinates research and conservation efforts on several priority rare species.  Derek is currently focused on assessing the distribution\, status\, and management needs of black racers\, Blanding’s\, spotted\, and wood turtles in Maine\, coordinating Maine’s efforts with that of several working groups in the Northeast on these species.  Derek is also studying and guiding mitigation recommendations for the impacts of roadways on Maine’s reptiles and amphibians. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Center for Wildlife Studies is to provide accessible environmental education worldwide and promote wildlife conservation through science. \n\n\n\nLearn more about CWS by visiting their website: centerforwildlifestudies.org \n\n\n\nLearn more about the “Wild Maine” series here: centerforwildlifestudies.org/wild-maine

SUMMARY:Healing Handwork: "Drawing Messy Mandalas" with Robinsunne
DESCRIPTION:What needs to be healed? Our bodies? Our jobs? Our homes? Our psyches? Our relationships? Our experiences of joy? \n\n\n\nYou are invited to join an art class wherein we make mandalas – beautiful\, meditative circles – to engage our hands while our souls and minds listen patiently for the answers we seek. It is remarkable how this all works together. The introductory session\, which focuses on drawing mandalas\, will take place on Saturday\, March 16\, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM in the Picker Room. It is free and open to adults. While there\, if you want to go a little deeper\, you can sign up for the series of Embroidery gatherings. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but spots are limited. Please sign up ahead of time here: https://forms.office.com/r/a2p3WE1sN6 \n\n\n\nWhat do you want? We need to know\, but are trained to turn away. We get taught to ignore the “magic” of being a human. We get chastised\, or worse\, punished for spending time in our imaginations. And then we get sick\, or stuck in uncomfortable situations where we don’t have the space to enact our Gifts\, and have no discernable path back to our True hearts.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt making is the path. (Well\, it is a path.) \n\n\n\nDrawing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nThis first class is easy. Perfection is not necessary. If you can draw little circles and triangles\, or even dots and dashes\, you can create wonder-full mandala pictures. The process will calm us down\, and engage all that magical human brain stuff that will lead us to where we really want to go. It is automatic. (!) \n\n\n\nSewing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nIn subsequent classes\, we will each embroider a mandala. If you can sew a running stitch\, that is enough. If you are a well-practiced embroideress this will be awesome fun. Sewing is where it all gets fabulous. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRobinsunne is a local mixed-media fiber artist. She has taught at the Library during some Jumpstart Januarys\, and exhibited in the past two Accordion Book Shows hosted by Amy Hand. She also contributes to and trades with the Artist Trading Card box at the front desk.

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Costica Bradatan's "Dying for Ideas" - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its exploration of philosophy as “an art of living\,” the Camden Philosophical Society will at this month’s regularly scheduled hybrid gathering — at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, March 19 — discuss portions of the 2015 book Dying for Ideas: The Dangerous Lives of the Philosophers\, by Costica Bradatan. All are welcome to participate\, either in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemporary philosopher Costica Bradatan\, a native of Romania\, is currently a Professor of Philosophy at Texas Tech University. The work that we are reading addresses the complex nature of the relation of philosophy (and philosophers) to death. As he discusses in the book\, many philosophers have died for ideas\, from Socrates to Czech phenomenologist Jan Patocke\, who died in 1977 after being interrogated by the Czech secret police about his involvement in the Chapter 77 human rights movement. Simone Weil\, whose work the society discussed last year\, is another example. Bradatan also points out that philosophers have developed ideas about the meaning of death. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy\, who selected the reading\, notes: “In a culture that appears to be allergic to talking about death\, it might be helpful to understand different philosophical approaches to death as part of an overall practical philosophy\, as part of living an examined life.” The reading proposed by Greg is the first 57 pages of Dying for Ideas. A link to an online version of the PDF is below: \n\n\n\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/13j1SWSJeqoN5DWwDTvmR9GmEZy1HwzDG/view

She both feels and “hears” what the earth is saying on her walks through ancient sacred sites and landscapes. \n\n\n\nIn this elegantly written and deeply personal travel guide\, she takes readers on extraordinary walks through known and not-so-known places in Ireland\, England\, Jordan\, Wales\, and Scotland. For over thirty years she worked in nonprofits as a counselor\, public speaker and grant writer. \n\n\n\nWith funding from the State of Maine\, she developed Storytelling with Heart\, a curriculum for professionals to create and use stories in their work with clients and/or communities. She traveled nationally with her curriculum\, developed a CD and published several articles on storytelling.     \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, she received an award from the National Storytelling Association for her contribution to the field of therapeutic storytelling. \n\n\n\nMargaret’s love for the Tarot grew out of her love for stories and undeniable curiosity in all things mystical. In 1982\, she began her studies with Rachel Pollock\, Mary Greer and Caitlin and John Matthews. She continues to be part of a peer support group of Tarot readers and offers readings to those who wish to be guided by the intuitive power of the cards.  \n\n\n\n At the age of nineteen\, Margaret began her travels abroad in search of her Welsh grandmother’s birthplace. That journey ignited her desire to visit sacred sites and encouraged her to search for stories that lay in the landscape. She now leads small groups on guided tours to sacred sites and shares the stories of the region. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, Margaret performs\, writes travel essays\, and continues her research on mythic stories.

SUMMARY:My Father\, the Spy – A Family Story (Mother was Also a Spy) – A Conversation with Les Fossel\, Jr. at the Camden Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique event presented in partnership with the Camden Public Library and the Camden Conference\, featuring Les Fossel\, Jr.\, as he shares the remarkable story of his parents’ involvements in America’s first spy agencies during World War II. This event will take place on SUNDAY\, March 24\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was the CIA there was the OSS\, and before the OSS there was the COI – the Coordinator of Information\, established under President Franklin Roosevelt as the first American spy agency in WWII – and Les Fossel\, Sr. was present at the creation. He was one of the first ten members of the new agency that would morph into the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. Fossel ran the Scandinavian operations of the OSS and was awarded the King Haakon Freedom Cross by the king of Norway after the war. Meanwhile his wife-to-be\, Virginia Van Brunt\, smuggled the first photos of Nazi concentration camps out of Germany. \n\n\n\n“My parents ran towards trouble\,” said Les Fossel\, Jr. who will tell his parents’ stories in what promises to be a fascinating afternoon at the Camden Public Library in the Picker Room on Sunday\, March 24 at 2:00 pm.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person at the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. Join us in person to participate in the full discussion. To attend on Zoom\, register here: https://bit.ly/lesfosselCPL \n\n\n\n“I cannot prove everything in Dad’s resumé\,” Fossel said\, “but it is quite likely the truth.” \n\n\n\nSome of the items in that resumé: Fossel\, Sr. lived with Trigve Lie in London during the war; Lie would become the first Secretary General of the United Nations. Fossel served in the fledgling OSS under General William “Wild Bill” Donovan; may have conducted secret negotiations with high-ranking Nazi officials over an early peace deal; and apparently knew how close the Nazi regime came to developing the first atom bomb. \n\n\n\nFossel hopes that his talk will attract people who might be able to flesh out his father’s story through discussion\, questions\, and curiosities that may further connect the dots. Camden has been a favorite retirement community for former State Department and CIA employees\, some of whom organized the first Camden Conference in 1987. DESCRIPTION:For the month of March\, the group will be reading and discussing “Mad Honey” by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan. The Monday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room and on Zoom* of the Camden Public Library on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am. For the month of March\, the group will meet entirely on Zoom. \n\n\n\nSummary: Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life\, living in Boston\, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon\, raising a beautiful son\, Asher\, was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown\, living in the house she grew up in\, and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. When Lily Campanello and her mom relocate to Adams\, New Hampshire\, for her final year of high school\, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while\, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school\, and Lily can’t help but fall for him\, too. Then one day\, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead\, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in him\, and as the case against him unfolds\, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

(NH 48621\, Naval History and Heritage Command)\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is kicking off Maritime Month a few days early to welcome historian Charles Lagerbom for his talk about the USS Maine on Tuesday\, March 26\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. This event is part of the 2024 Speaker Series put on in partnership with the Camden-Rockport Historical Society\, as well as a part of our Maritime Month program series. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. He organized surveys of ship remains in Maine lakes\, the 1779 Penobscot Expedition and the 17th century English galleon Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid. Two field seasons were spent in Antarctica with University of Maine Quaternary Institute\, now Climate Change Institute. He is author of Whaling in Maine and Maine to Cape Horn: The Most Dangerous Journey and writes a maritime column entitled Half Seas Over for the local newspaper Village Soup. In addition to AP US History\, Charles teaches New England Maritime History and co-teaches the Marine Studies Class as part of the Belfast Marine Institute while also frequently speaking on Antarctica\, Cape Horn\, Maine whaling and New England colonial and maritime history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs.
