Featured pieces include those created by adult students in oil painting\, watercolor\, pottery\, sewing\, paper craft\, and woodworking classes. Five Town Adult Ed was founded in 1969 as the first adult education program in Maine\, and many of the students and teachers have been participating in or teaching art classes for over 30 years as a part of this inspiring community. Maine Audubon’s Staff Naturalist\, Doug Hitchcox\, will give a lively visual presentation about a trip he and 12 Audubon members took to Guatemala\, a birding paradise\, in March 2023. This travelogue will follow the group’s travels day by day\, highlighting the amazing birds\, delicious food\, and stunning vistas\, as well as the incredible cultural experiences sprinkled throughout the trip.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Meg will be reading from her debut collection of poetry\, Magma Intrusions. \n\n\n\n\nMeg Weston writes poetry and non-fiction. In her writing and photography\, she expresses a passion for the geological processes that shape the earth and the stories that shape our lives. Her poems have appeared in literary journals and anthologies as well as the chapbook Letters from the White Queen (2020)\, with a new collection\, Magma Intrusions\, due out this Fall. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, Nov. 21\, the Camden Philosophical Society will continue its exploration of philosophy as a way of living\, as understood by the ancient Greeks and Romans\, rather than as an elucidation of theory. This month our guide will be Pierre Hadot\, a 20th Century French philosopher\, classical historian\, and author of the renowned collection of essays Philosophy as a Way of Life: Spiritual Exercises from Socrates to Foucault. All are welcome to participate in this hybrid gathering\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom.   \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. For real wisdom docs not merely cause us to know: it makes us ‘be’ in a different way.”  In the contemporary world\, too\, Hadot argues\, “Ancient philosophical traditions can provide guidance in our relationship to ourselves\, to the cosmos\, and to other human beings.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a renowned historian of classical philosophy\, as well as a practitioner of philosophical exercise\, Hadot certainly did not deny the importance of theory as applied in philosophical discourse to logic\, to ethics and\, in antiquity\, to physics. These theories defined the various schools of philosophy founded around the thinking of Socrates\, the Cynics\, Aristotle\, Epicurus\, and the Stoics\, among others. But such theory was just that\, philosophical discourse. \n\n\n\nPhilosophy itself was something else. It was “no longer a theory divided into parts\, but a unitary act\, which consists in living logic\, physics\, and ethics.” When it comes to ethics\, the ancient focus on living and action as the essence of philosophy implies a strong inward-looking focus on oneself – one’s own individual life – and is at odds both with the rules-based systems grounded in Western religious belief and with the “consequentialist” approach to ethics in the modern era\, according to our readings last month by Julia Annas in her 1993 work The Morality of Happiness.. Consequentialism judges behavior by its social effects\, with the most notable example being utilitarianism. \n\n\n\nHadot concurs on the inward focus of ancient “spiritual exercises” that formed the core of philosophy. He is the author/editor of 18 books\, and more than 150 book chapters and journal articles. SUMMARY:"Forgotten Classics of the Stage: Journey's End" with Everyman Repertory Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Everyman Repertory Theatre\, in partnership with The Camden Public Library\, is pleased to present a new series\, “Forgotten Classics of the Stage” featuring rehearsed readings and lively discussions of famous but rarely performed plays\, presented in the library’s historic and beautiful Reading Room. \n\n\n\nThe Everyman Repertory Theatre are outstanding professionals who collaborate well and enjoy sharing their passion for the theater with the public and those who are either familiar with or new to the theater. \n\n\n\nThe first event will take place on Sunday\, November 26\, at 2:00 PM in the Reading Room at the Camden Public Library and feature the 20th century play Journey’s End. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJourney’s End was first presented in 1928\, written by the English playwright and screenwriter R.C. Sherriff. It is set towards the end of the First World War. The story takes place in an officers’ dugout in the trenches and was based on Sherriff’s letters home during his time as an officer. It played a clear role in informing and inspiring the Blackadder series of BBC comedies set during this period\, though it has a more tragic bent. \n\n\n\nThe play was first performed at the Apollo Theatre in London on 9 December 1928\, starring a young Laurence Olivier\, and soon moved to other West End theatres for a two-year run. It was one of The Best Plays of 1928–1929 and quickly became internationally popular\, with numerous productions and tours in English and other languages\, as well as a film version\, before falling from the repertoire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“As soon as we announced it would be part of our Forgotten Classics of the Stage series\, two of our cast members said they had seen productions in London on the 100th anniversary of the war’s end\,” said Paul Hodgson\, artistic director of the Everyman Repertory Theatre. “But then it immediately fell out of the repertoire again. It is a work of absolute genius\, powerful\, realistic\, emotional\, anti-war and brutally honest. It should be on the stage somewhere all the time.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Everyman Repertory Theatre is a registered 501(c)(3) not for profit professional theatre company committed to bringing live theatre to the people of Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nIts mission is to present high quality\, creative and engaging theatre for people from all age groups living in midcoast Maine through the efforts of a corps of professional actors\, designers and directors. We collaborate with local community and non-profit arts organizations such as Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, Farnsworth Art Museum\, and Maine Pro Musica.

So I was thrilled when the library director Nikki Maounis said YES to once again hosting a ground-breaking\, survivor-powered domestic abuse-awareness event.”   She said bringing light between Thanksgiving and Christmas to how domestic abuse impacts children is perfect timing\, with “holidays a particularly miserable and dangerous time when you are living with an abusive family member.”  \n\n\n\n“Camden Public Library is excited to collaborate with Finding Our Voices once more to bring this important program to our community\,” said the library’s Executive Director Nikki Maounis. “It’s an honor to provide a space for sharing these stories and we are proud to be a part of the movement to break the silence on domestic abuse. I took classes wherever my husband and I lived – at SMU in Dallas\, at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah and at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Maryland.  More impactful\, I also studied privately with many artists including Scott Christensen\, Jill Carver and Lori Putnam.  My dream was always to paint full time\, one day\, some day.  \n\n\n\n“Misty Moonlight”\n\n\n\nI spent many years as a residential architect\, squeezing in time to paint whenever I could: early mornings before going to an office\, or on the weekends after chores.  In 2006\, I had a sort of rude awakening when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I realized that a lot of the cliches are true:  life is short\, life can turn on a dime\, you should follow your dreams\, and there is no time like the present.   After finishing cancer treatments in 2007\, I began to make a plan:  to live somewhere beautiful and to paint for a living.  I now know that dreams can indeed come true. \n\n\n\nIt took a few years for my husband and I to get here\, but we moved to Maine in 2016!  We live in an old 1830’s farmhouse that we renovated and restored.  Like most old houses\, it is a work in progress\, a never-ending project.  In 2017\, I began painting full time and have relished every moment of it!  I love exploring the areas around our home in mid-coast Maine and also Acadia to find inspirations to paint!  I love trying to capture the energy and emotion of a landscape in paint.    I love knowing that I am finally where I am supposed to be. \n\n\n\nI begin paintings with sketches\, and often paint plein-aire or on-site.  I have learned that I am a fair-weather painter though!  In the winter\, I paint in my studio\, using sketches\, on-site paintings and photographs as sources of inspiration.  Whether they are created in the field or in my studio\, I try to capture some of the beauty of the natural world – \n\n\n\nthe quality of the light\, \n\n\n\nthe simple yet compelling forms of the vernacular architecture\, \n\n\n\nthe subtle colors of the meadows\, \n\n\n\nthe magic at sunset.  \n\n\n\nI am constantly stunned at the ceaselessly changing blues of the waters\, whether they are the ponds\, rivers\, or the ocean. \n\n\n\nThe more that I paint\, the more convinced I am that Art is Important – it feeds our soul.  My calling is to lift up nature by creating beautiful objects so that others can live with the beauty and serenity of nature in their homes.” \n\n\n\nLearn more about Lisa Kyle at her website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing.
