SUMMARY:Harbor Arts and Books Fair
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Vendors\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, September 30\, and Sunday\, October 1\, the Camden Public Library will host the Fall Harbor Arts and Books Fair in the beautiful Camden Amphitheatre and along Atlantic Avenue. The fair will feature over 50 talented artists and craftspeople showcasing and selling wares from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. This popular community event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nHarbor Arts and Books has possibly the most beautiful location for an art fair on the East Coast. The fairs take place in Camden’s historic Harbor Park and Amphitheatre\, and on the street that passes through the park\, at the head of Camden Harbor. Exhibitors display their work in standard 10×10 tents. This juried show is a dynamic focal point of creative expression. It is a perfect place for artists to show their wares\, connect with other creative folks\, and pair art enthusiasts with beautiful creations.  \n\n\n\nThe Fair runs concurrently with the library’s Huge Book Sale Under the Tent\, which kicks off a day earlier on Friday\, September 29\, and runs through Sunday\, October 1. The tent will be located in the “Meadow” parking lot\, just past the Camden Amphitheatre on Atlantic Ave. The book sale hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. \n\n\n\nBoth of these events offer hours of family-friendly fun in charming and walkable downtown Camden. DESCRIPTION:For Discover History Month each October\, the Camden Public Library draws on the photographs\, prints\, and other resources in the library’s Walsh History Center to create an exhibit portraying different facets of Camden’s history. This year\, the theme will be A Visual History of the Megunticook River. The exhibit will tell the story of the Megunticook River from glacial history to early settlers\, and historic mills to present day. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, in partnership with Midcoast Women\, presents Denise Breed\, who will share her story of May 25\,1997 in Freetown\, Sierra Leone\, West Africa\, when her family of four and a small US Embassy community found themselves in the dead center of a violent coup d’etat with no conceivable way out. “A Mother’s Story: No Conceivable Way Out” will take place on Thursday\, October 5 at 6:00 PM. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place at the Camden Public Library in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. SUMMARY:"The Changing Industrial Waterfront: 1980 – 1990" with Belfast Historical Soceity & Museum President Megan Pinette
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Megan Pinette\, President of the Belfast Historical Society and Museum\, for a presentation on the changing industrial waterfront of Belfast on Thursday\, October 12 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. Pinette will present about changes to the Belfast harbor and waterfront during the decade which saw the end of the poultry industry. One of the major changes which helped spur the revitalization of the downtown was the removal of the Main Street grain storage mill which had served the industry. A successful downtown revitalization project followed which added sidewalks\, tree plantings\, and benches. Art galleries\, cafes\, bed and breakfast establishments\, and theater companies soon took hold. Belfast no longer was thought of as “Schmaltzport” but was renamed as “culturally cool.” \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Most of these programs have been recorded and made available at www.belfastmuseum.org and on Belfast Community Television. She was photograph editor\, working with authors Jay Davis and Tim Hughes for their History of Belfast in the 20th Century. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes back Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers for a fun and spooky performance of The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow on Saturday\, October 14 at 11:00 a.m.! \n\n\n\n\nIn this comedic version of the classic Washington Irving tale\, schoolteacher Ichabod Crane helps the Headless Horseman find a new head and a spookier image.  Meanwhile\, a jealous Brom Bones tries to run Ichabod out of town as they both vie for the affection of Katrina Van Tassel.  The show features 20 hand-crafted mouth and rod puppets\, and some shadow puppetry. Length of show: approx. 50 minutesRecommended audience: ages 4 and up \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrogtown Mountain Puppeteers is an award-winning puppetry troupe based in Bar Harbor\, Maine\, and comprised of three siblings – brothers Erik and Brian Torbeck and sister Robin (Torbeck) Erlandsen.  Founded in 2000\, Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers has performed at festivals\, schools\, libraries and theatres in the United States and Canada.   They write and create all the shows they perform and have received three Citations of Excellence from UNIMA-USA\, the highest national award in puppetry.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month for reading and discussion. Read below to learn about the topic for the meeting.. Can the study of ethics get beyond the “consequentialist” and the moral rules-based approaches that have dominated modern Western philosophical thinking on the matter? Might ancient Greek philosophers from Aristotle to Cicero help us in our search? \n\n\n\nThe Camden Philosophical Society will be tacking these questions at its regular monthly discussion from 3:30-5:30 pm on Tuesday\, Oct. 17. In its discussion\, the society will be following the guidance provided by University of Arizona philosophy professor Julia Annas in her 1993 book The Morality of Happiness. All are welcome to participate in this hybrid session\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please let us know by return email (Reply All). In the ancient world\, while these were not in their origin philosopher’s questions – they were the kind of questions any reflective person would likely engage — philosophy was thought able to contribute to considering them.    \n\n\n\nWhat about today? If we find ourselves not wholly satisfied with our lives\, asking whether they could be improved\, or pressed by an urge to live differently\, can philosophy help? What might it contribute to making sense of our lives as a whole?  And if we’ve gotten out of  the habit of doing philosophy in order to ask how I ought to live\, how then would we revisit it in order to find\, as the ancients did\, reflections worth exploring?  \n\n\n\n We sometimes hear folks say\, as Seneca did\, that we ought to live our lives as if each day were the last\, the one that finished our life and made it complete. Really? How is that even possible? Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics begins by asserting that “every action and choice\, seems to aim at some good; the good\, therefore\, has been well defined as that at which all things aim.” What in the world is the meaning there? Is “the good” responsive to Annas’s questions about the contemporary world?   \n\n\n\nIf it’s every action and choice\, the goods I pursue are many. Do I pursue a single good to organize and unify my aims and goals? Is doing good what I desire? Most things I pursue I pursue for the sake of something else. Are there goods I pursue for their own sake? Ought there to be? Or why aren’t there? The ancients spoke of happiness\, eudaimonia.  But apparently not just happiness of any sort will do — a movie from the sixties\, not so well received\, was called “What’s so Bad About Feeling Good.”  Is how I ought to live an objective as well as a subjective question? \n\n\n\n Also\, what does it mean to pursue happiness?  Is it something we get\, that happens to us\, a state of affairs to bring about\, or is it something we do? What counts as living well?  What counts as doing well?  Annas gives the example of playing tennis to stay fit and  suggests that staying healthy in order to play tennis would be getting things backwards.  Really?  Why do you suppose tennis pro Roger Federer (net worth $95.1 million) learned to stay healthy?   \n\n\n\n Anyway\, what’s success got to do with it? What about what we are or could be as humans? The complete working out of our creative abilities\, and powers\, and needs\, and enjoyments? Aristotle thought the good we’re after was self-sufficient or complete in the sense that it lacked nothing. The Zen monk Hakuin asked “What is there just now you lack?”  Is philosophical reflection a thing we lack?

DESCRIPTION:As a part of the Camden Public Library’s Discover History Month\, Walsh History Center director Ken Gross will present “A Visual History of the Megunticook River” on Tuesday\, October 17 at 6:30 PM. Ken’s presentation will cover a brief introduction to the glacial history of the region that allowed the river’s energy to be harvested as power for the early settlers and entrepreneurs of the region. Ken will introduce each of the historic mills\, relying on the 1856 and 1875 detailed maps of Camden as well as the extraordinarily detailed Sanborn Insurance Maps from 1888-1923.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in-person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. SUMMARY:River of History: The Hudson/Mahicannituck with Kerry Hardy
DESCRIPTION:As a part of Discover History Month\, the Camden Public Library welcomes eco-historian\, researcher\, and author Kerry Hardy for his presentation “River of History.” Hardy’s talk will introduce how he uses different disciplines (geology\, linguistics\, ethnography\, primary source historical documents\, and human ecology and economy) to understand a place\, and produce what some people call a “public history.” In this case\, Hardy investigates the area at the mouth of the Hudson River\, which might better be called the Mahicannituck. Hardy will show how its development has been shaped by glaciers\, oysters\, beavers\, Native Americans\, pirates\, enslaved people\, and assorted events and accidents\, into what we today call New York and Jersey City. \n\n\n\nThis talk stems from Hardy’s work for the last five years as the lead researcher and cartographer for the Public History Project\, under Dr. Jack Tchen\, who currently heads the Clement Price Institute on Ethnicity\, Culture\, and the Modern Experience at Rutgers-Newark. “Our contention is that these cities\, and this nation\, have been built with substantial and unrecognized subsidies like the dispossession of Native Americans\, the enslavement of Africans\, and the sacking of a bountiful environment\,” Hardy says. “A greatly revised\, and much fuller\, historical narrative is needed.” \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. He is the Lead Researcher and Cartographer at the Public History Project\, the Stewardship Coordinator at the Vinalhaven Land Trust\, and author of Notes on a Lost Flute: A Field Guide to the Wabanaki that delves into the Native American foodways\, languages\, place names and ecologies of Maine in 2009. \n\n\n\nHe has presented talks at Maine Audubon\, the Conference on Endangered Languages and Cultures of North America\, Algonquian Conference\, and was a keynote speaker at the Common Ground Fair. He was the former executive director and education coordinator at Merryspring Nature Park\, a nonprofit organization in Camden\, Maine.  \n\n\n\nHe holds a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the Camden Public Library’s “Discover History Month” series of history-themed programs\, events\, and exhibits. SUMMARY:Full Moon\, Pre-Halloween Spooky Sound Immersion
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Doble on a wide assortment of large gongs and Forest Weston on didgeridoo for a special\, outdoor\, nighttime\, eerie sonic experience to celebrate the season. This spooky sound bathing session will take place on Saturday\, October 28 at 6:00 PM in the Amphitheatre\, with a rain date of Sunday\, October 29 at 6:00 PM.   \n\n\n\nAs the full moon rises over Camden Harbor\, we will be bathing the Amphitheater in mystical sound to help transport you on an inner journey. Think of this as sonic meditation\, best experienced in a very relaxed position with closed eyes. Bring something comfy to lay or sit on and plenty of warm cloths/blankets to ward off the chill. This is a free event with optional donation to be split with the Library. \n\n\n\nPlease register here\, so you can be contacted in case of changes.
