Dickson during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, September 2\, from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra M. Dickson maintains studios on Monhegan Island and in Port Clyde and offers private and semi-private drawing classes. Dickson is also an author and has published several books\, including a biography of her artist grandmother\, Mary Townsend Mason: Yuletide Greetings; an illustrated children’s chapter book\, Ted’s Memoir; and The Solar Path\, a local guide to solar electricity. \n\n\n\nA portion of the proceeds from the sales of artwork in the Picker Room Gallery will benefit the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:All About iNaturalist with Roger Rittmaster and Coastal Mountains Land Trust (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, September 12\, at 6:30 pm\, the Camden Public Library\, in partnership with the Coastal Mountains Land Trust\, welcomes Maine Master Naturalist Roger Rittmaster for a fascinating and updated presentation on one of the world’s most popular and exciting nature apps\, iNaturalist. Since Rittmaster’s last talk at the Camden Public Library\, iNaturalist has grown incredibly\, in its size\, number of users\, and applications. \n\n\n\nThe program will start with the basics of using iNaturalist to identify unknown species\, and Rittmaster will demonstrate how to use the Explore function to learn more about plants and animals of interest.  He will provide tips and tricks to make the most of this tool and show how it can allow even the most amateur naturalist the ability to communicate with experts all over the world. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register HERE. \n\n\n\niNaturalist is not only an amazing app and website for identifying unknown species\, but it also offers a wealth of information on plants and animals everywhere.  It combines artificial intelligence with input from a worldwide web of natural history experts.  By serving as a collection of photos from travels\, it can also provide an easily retrievable record of where you’ve been and when. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Roger Rittmaster is a retired endocrinologist and avid nature photographer living in Camden\, Maine.  He began using iNaturalist in 2018 to identify and catalog thousands of photos of animals and plants that were collecting virtual dust on the hard drive of his computer.   Starting three years ago\, he began giving talks to promote iNaturalist as a tool for both personal education about the natural world and for teachers to introduce kids to the wonder of nature.  Roger is a Maine Master Naturalist\, Board Member of Coastal Mountains Land Trust\, Vice-President of the Maine Entomological Society\, and former Chair of the Camden Conservation Commission.

On September 14 at 6:30 PM\, Camden resident Molly Mulhern will present “Camden\, the Climate Crisis\, and You\,” an overview of the latest climate science and opens the dialogue for Camden citizens to identify how the crisis is impacting them and to consider solutions. \n\n\n\nMulhern will share stories of our community and other local actions\, highlighting work already being done and exciting initiatives throughout the state. Not a doom-and-gloom talk\, this evening is designed to provide actionable ideas and connections leading to a fossil-fuel-free Camden.  \n\n\n\nThis event will kick off the CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow)’s fall series of town-wide climate panels and topics\, organized in collaboration with the Town of Camden. Her September 14 talk at the CPL\, entitled “Camden\, the Climate Crisis and You\,” provides insights into the local impacts of climate change and provides exciting information about a new Camden climate action group. Molly is a Climate Ambassador with A Climate to Thrive(MDI) and a presenter in Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project. SUMMARY:Camus\, Absurdism\, Nihilism with Ray Boisvert - Presented by the Camden Philosophical Society
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society is sponsoring a talk and open discussion on mid-20th Century French philosopher\, author and activist Albert Camus and his attempt to move beyond the nihilism he saw as characteristic of his age. On Tuesday\, September 19\, at 6:00 pm in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library\, the talk will be by professor emeritus and Midcoast Maine resident Ray Boisvert\, author of Albert Camus and the Philosophy of the Ordinary. All are welcome to attend. No expertise in philosophy is required\, only interest in thinking and learning.  \n\n\n\nRay Boisvert\n\n\n\nCamus is often identified as a philosopher of “absurdism.” Boisvert suggests that this is a theme limited to Camus’ early works\, such as The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus. When we pay attention to Camus’s whole corpus\, Boisvert says\, it is clear that his real target – identified in his famed acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 — was “nihilism.” \n\n\n\nNihilism as a concept has largely passed from common discussion\, but in Camus’ time it was “used to signal that life is objectively meaningless\, and that all meaning is subjective\,” Boisvert has written. Camus’ aim was to challenge this and\, instead\, to pose the question “What should I do?” This is particularly clear in Camus’ novel The Plague\, which brought this once well-known and popular novelist and dramatist back into public attention at the time of the Covid pandemic.     \n\n\n\nBoisvert\, however\, goes on to argue that Camus was unable to carry out his project of persuasively countering nihilism because he never got beyond his Cartesian starting point: the “Great Bifurcation.”  A serious move beyond nihilism requires a major ontological shift that Boisvert calls “rehabilitation of the ordinary\,” something Camus never made\, while philosophers whose lives overlapped with his moved in the needed direction. Examples cited by Boisvert are Charles Sanders Peirce\, Martin Heidegger\, Alfred North Whitehead\, Jose Ortega y Gasset\, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. \n\n\n\nBesides his work on Camus\, Boisvert has written a number of books on philosophy and food\, and on the philosophy of John Dewey in the contemporary context. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Philosophical Society has been reading and debating the works of philosophers from antiquity to the present for more than 15 years. It holds hybrid meetings\, in-person at the Camden Public Library and on Zoom\, from 3:30-5:30 on the third Tuesday of each month. Come as you are! \n\n\n\nFormed in the spring of 2023\, CamdenCAN is a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. We help our community take advantage of climate solutions with actionable steps. Together we CAN make a difference. At the September talk\, there will be sign up sheets for committees and events sponsored by this group\, as well as information on state-wide initiatives for climate action. \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will also be hosting a few special CamdenCAN events this fall\, as a part of a larger town-wide series of climate panels and topics\, organized in collaboration with the Town of Camden.

At Mermaid Bindery she binds books and boxes for others. As well as writing\, paper decorating\, collage\, calligraphy\, pop-up & paper sculpting to illustrate her own artist books. DESCRIPTION:Camden Conference\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, presents Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh\, Crawford Professor & Chair of Religious Studies at Colby College\, for a talk on the role of Indian art\, literature\, and film as a glue for global connections. This event will take place on Saturday\, September 23 at 4:30 PM at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 37th Annual Camden Conference\, “INDIA: Rising Ambitions\, Challenges at home.”  \n\n\n\nOur world is dangerously divided and polarized. Economic disparities\, political divisions\, environmental devastation\, religious wars\, and fear of immigrants only seem to be getting worse. In her talk\, Singh will discuss if aesthetics – the opposite of anesthesia – could serve as an antidote for our modern crises. By heightening our sensibilities\, visual and literary creations connect us with our very own selves\, fellow humans\, and nature. Singh will illustrate this discussion with Sikh and Sufi poetry\, contemporary Indian art\, and Bollywood film clips.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. She received her B.A. in philosophy and religion from Wellesley College\, her M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania\, and her Ph.D. from Temple University. \n\n\n\nShe is the chair of the department and Crawford Family Professor of Religion at Colby College. Her interests focus on poetics and feminist issues. Nikky Singh has published extensively in the field of Sikhism\, including The Feminine Principle in the Sikh Vision of the Transcendent (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press\, 1993)\, The Name of My Beloved: Verses of the Sikh Gurus (HarperCollins and Penguin)\, and Metaphysics and Physics of the Guru Granth Sahib (Sterling). Her book on Sikhism was translated into Japanese. She has lectured widely in North America\, England\, France\, India\, and Singapore\, and her views have been aired on television and radio in America\, Canada\, Bangladesh\, Australia\, Ireland\, and India. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 37th Annual Camden Conference\, “INDIA: Rising Ambitions\, Challenges at Home” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Harbor Arts and Books Fair
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Vendors\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, September 30\, and Sunday\, October 1\, the Camden Public Library will host the Fall Harbor Arts and Books Fair in the beautiful Camden Amphitheatre and along Atlantic Avenue. The fair will feature over 50 talented artists and craftspeople showcasing and selling wares from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. This popular community event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nHarbor Arts and Books has possibly the most beautiful location for an art fair on the East Coast. The fairs take place in Camden’s historic Harbor Park and Amphitheatre\, and on the street that passes through the park\, at the head of Camden Harbor. Exhibitors display their work in standard 10×10 tents. This juried show is a dynamic focal point of creative expression. It is a perfect place for artists to show their wares\, connect with other creative folks\, and pair art enthusiasts with beautiful creations.  \n\n\n\nThe Fair runs concurrently with the library’s Huge Book Sale Under the Tent\, which kicks off a day earlier on Friday\, September 29\, and runs through Sunday\, October 1. The tent will be located in the “Meadow” parking lot\, just past the Camden Amphitheatre on Atlantic Ave. The book sale hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. \n\n\n\nBoth of these events offer hours of family-friendly fun in charming and walkable downtown Camden.
