SUMMARY:Portraits from the Knox Woolen Mill and  Camden Tannery: Photography by Bonnie Farmer
DESCRIPTION:During the month of March*\, an exhibit from local photographer Bonnie Farmer will be on view in the Picker Room Gallery at the Camden Public Library.  \n\n\n\nFrom 1985-1990\, Bonnie Farmer had exclusive permission to photograph employees\, machinery\, and products at The Knox Woolen Mill and The Tannery\, both located in Camden. By photographing these workers\, whose families had also worked there generations before\, Farmer documented and honored the end of an era. \n\n\n\nMBNA\, which occupied the former Mill building\, exhibited these photographs in its museum until the building was sold. The Dowling Walsh Center for Arts also exhibited Farmer’s collection until that was also closed. The Camden Public Library is honored to have these photographs in its own collections and continue to share the stories of Camden’s industrial past. \n\n\n\nBonnie Farmer currently resides in Rockland and is now painting and working with watercolors. She is also known for her assemblage sculptures. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong Outdoors
DESCRIPTION:Starting in March\, sessions will occur on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM.  \n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. For more information contact Anna at camdentaiji@gmail.com. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues in March with a presentation by conservation biologist and herpetologist Dr. Matthew Chatfield. Dr. Chatfield will be discussing the natural history of wood turtles and why Maine’s habitat has allowed this species to survive.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Wood turtles are also widely known for their intelligence and unusual life history. Although declining throughout most of their range in the eastern U.S.\, Maine is considered a stronghold for this beautiful and fascinating species. Join us as we explore the biology and conservation of one of the most charismatic creatures of Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Matthew Chatfield is a Center for Wildlife Studies Instructor and Assistant Professor of Evolution & Eco-Health\, UMaine. His work focuses on the population ecology of endangered wood turtle populations and the impacts of introduced pathogens on amphibians. He works with both undergraduate and graduate students as well as a variety of collaborators from state agencies to integrate field-based science and a coordinated conservation and restoration framework to address basic and applied problems in conservation biology. This event is free and open to the public and will take place in-person in the Picker Room as well as online. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister to attend virtually on Zoom here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_k0qIpR6ZQM-9euFbVI1Kzg \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nForaging for Wild Edible Mushrooms: Embracing the Bewildering Boletes \n\n\n\nA pair of shaggy Russell’s Boletes\n\n\n\nThe fleshy pored mushrooms we collectively call “Boletes” include several hundred different mushrooms in more than 40 genera in New England.  And recent updates in genetic taxonomy seems to be adding to the confusion rather than simplifying this challenging group for the forager.  \n\n\n\nAnd there are a number of easily-identified Boletes that are common in our forests and present a great opportunity for the forager ready to embrace the Boletes as food.   This 90 minute talk will review the major genera of Boletes and focus on a number of great edibles as well as a handful of mushrooms consistently involved in mild to moderate cases of poisoning.  Suggestions for resources will be offered. \n\n\n\nGreg Marley has been collecting\, studying\, eating\, growing and teaching mushrooms for over 45 years.  He spreads his knowledge of mushrooms through walks\, talks and classes held across the New England and beyond.  Marley is the author the award-winning book Chanterelle Dreams\, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms\, (Chelsea Green\, 2010).  As a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Centers across New England\, he provides expertise in mushroom poisoning cases.  He is a frequent lecturer to college groups and a mushrooming foray faculty member.  When not mushrooming\, Marley works as a mental health clinician specializing in suicide prevention and traumatic grief.  \n\n\n\nA Big Bowl of King Boletes ready for roasting!

Bridget Butler\, the Bird Diva\, breaks down why by looking at current research on gender and birding\, retelling the stories of the Mothers of Ornithology\, and making the connection to the current science on female birds. \n\n\n\nBridget Butler\, the Bird Diva\n\n\n\nBridget Butler\, AKA The Bird Diva\, has been working in conservation and environmental education for more than 20 years. She owns her own small business\, Bird Diva Consulting\, which provides presentations\, outings\, and online courses for folks interested in exploring their connection with birds. Bridget is a certified Kripalu Mindfulness Outdoor Guide\, and has worked for the Audubon Society in Vermont\, Maine\, New Hampshire\, and Massachusetts. Her Slow Birding work has been featured on numerous podcasts including the American Birding Podcast\, Ray Brown’s Talkin’ Birds Podcast\, and the South Africa podcast The Birding Life. As the Bird Diva\, she feels that birding is for anyone who enjoys and is curious about birds – if you take delight in noticing birds\, you are a birder. Bridget lives in St. Albans\, Vermont with her husband and three young children.

SUMMARY:Riding the TransAmerica Trail with Rich Boulet: In-person only
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to host Riding the TransAmerica Trail\, a presentation with Rich Boulet on Tuesday\, March 21 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room.  \n\n\n\nRich\, the Library Director at Blue Hill Public Library in Blue Hill\, Maine recently took a “bucket list” 12\,000 mile motorcycle trip across the USA and back\, primarily on dirt roads. The primary route was the TransAmerica Trail\, a transcontinental recreational route that is suitable for dual-sport motorcycles and 4X4 vehicles. During his presentation\, Rich will share photos and stories about his six-week ride across the country\, camping from his modified Suzuki DR650 motorcycle. \n\n\n\nThis event will be held in-person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nRich Boulet and his modified Suzuki DR650 motorcycle.

The PWH mission also lessens the impact on our environment and helps to lower health care costs by reducing disposal fees. \n\n\n\nInitially a Registered Nurse\, Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in nursing administration in the US and abroad. As a healthcare leader\, Elizabeth has demonstrated exceptional collaborative leadership focusing on proactive change and innovative ideas that create a synergy among many. \n\n\n\nThroughout her career\, Elizabeth has demonstrated a commitment to the importance of giving back: “We can all make a difference in our world\, and all we have to do is try.” Elizabeth holds graduate degrees from Boston University School of Medicine and Public Health\, St Joseph’s College\, and the University of Maine. She also holds undergraduate degrees from American University Washington DC and Northeastern University.  In addition\, she was recently featured on CNN’s Great Big Story and in the Sustainability Issue of Oprah Magazine.  Her efforts to focus on the medical supply chain and how best to direct it to help those less fortunate have resulted in numerous awards and speaking engagements for businesses and healthcare organizations.
