SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Alasdair MacIntyre's "Dependent Rational Animals" Continued
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will be continuing its discussion of Scottish-American moral and political philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s book Dependent Rational Animals at its next gathering on July 16. MacIntyre’s treatment of the importance of community – at a level larger than family but smaller than the nation – and his advocacy for “just generosity” in this context will be a particular focus of the July discussion. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe Society’s July 16 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering at 3:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for summer visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society in Portugal\, England\, Arizona\, or wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nDependent Rational Animals was written in 1999. It further develops or revises a number of themes introduced by MacIntyre in his 1981 classic After Virtue. The 1999 work is available for free online here: https://vdocuments.net/alasdair-macintyre-dependent-rational-animals.html?page=1  Chapters 9-11 are the highlighted readings for July. \n\n\n\nThe initial chapters of Dependent Rational Animals raise and explore the questions of why it is important for humans to pay attention to and understand both what we have in common with other intelligent animals\, and what makes “attention to human vulnerability and disability important for moral philosophers.” Beginning in Chapter 9\, MacIntyre explores his contention that developing the virtues of “rational independence” and “acknowledged dependence” require social groups (communities) that differ from either the modern family or the national state. \n\n\n\nIn an attempt to bridge what is often presented as a chasm between Enlightenment individualism and the importance of community\, MacIntyre equates the two: “Note that on this account the good of the individual is not subordinated to the good of the community nor vice versa. The individual\, in order not just to pursue but even to define her or his good in concrete terms has first to recognize the goods of the community as goods that he or she must make her own.” \n\n\n\nMacIntyre then ties this into a virtuous attitude that he calls “just generosity” and which he traces back to Thomas Aquinas. Again\, MacIntyre sees this as a bridge between what are sometimes posed as conflicting obligations – for justice\, i.e. that which is owed; and for generosity\, inspired by sympathy for the suffering of others and also by pursuit of the virtue of doing good. \n\n\n\nMacIntyre is a self-described Aristotelian-Thomist. He is a renowned proponent of virtue ethics\, and of communitarianism\, in contrast to liberal capitalism. Born in Scotland and educated in England\, he taught initially at the UK universities of Leeds\, Manchester and Oxford before moving to the US in 1969. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Notre Dame\, having in addition been on the faculties of Brandeis\, Duke\, Vanderbilt and Boston Universities.

SUMMARY:Boppa Chua! A History of the 1950’s and 60’s through Popular Song
DESCRIPTION:Marc Black\, NY Blues Hall of Fame inductee\, will be your guide for a trip through those memorable and colorful decades\, joyfully woven together in song! \n\n\n\nJoin us for this unforgettable evening on Tuesday\, July 16 at 6:00 PM (Six O’Clock!) in the Picker Room. This two person show is a multi-media and multi-dimensional presentation in song\, storytelling and plenty of laughter. From that point on\, I’ve enjoyed so many adventures following the music through folk\, blues\, funk\, experimental soundscapes\, and scoring film.  \n\n\n\nBut in the end\, it seems I always come back to Claudette\, that sweet hunk of wood I’ve been carrying around with me for 50 years.  (She’s a Guild D40) It seemed perfectly natural that now\, sequestered for a year\, Claudette and I would record an album at home… Everybody Wants My Hat.  There’s something unique about playing and/or recording at home. At the same time its both lonely and delightful. \n\n\n\nThis recording has given me the opportunity to express the love and joy I feel for my family altogether and my granddaughter\, Lola Simone\, in particular.  These songs express my hopes for the future as well as the concerns so many of us share. Choose to sit or lie down\, whatever is most comfortable for you. As you follow prompts for breath sensing\, body sensing\, and guided imagery your body & mind invite deeper and deeper levels of relaxation. Yoga Nidra is an ancient sleep-based meditation with no movement or effort required. Hester offers the Daring to Rest Yoga Nidra method which is designed specifically to release exhaustion on all levels: physical\, mental/emotional\, and life purpose exhaustion. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club’s 76th Annual Garden Tour will take place\, rain or shine\, Thursday\, July 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This year\, the Tour will feature the extraordinary interior and gardens of the 1887 summer “Castle by the Sea”\, which became The Norumbega Inn. In addition\, there will be other Camden gardens featuring lush perennial borders\, unique color combinations for the garden\, and sustainable horticulture with native plantings. For the first time\, the 66-acre Merryspring Nature Center will be a part of the Tour with its beautiful display gardens and arboretum of native trees. \n\n\n\nTICKETS are available online at www.camdengardenclub.org. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo complement the visual beauty of the Tour\, a selection of immersive exhibits and demonstrations will be presented throughout the day. Sample presentations include Framed Flower Art\, Hypertufa Demonstration\, Dahlia Workshop\, Active Native Plant Growing\, and From Seed to Bottle; Making Salve from an Organic Maine Garden.  \n\n\n\nThe Club will welcome a roster of new and returning musicians. SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Of Cod and Communities" by Linda Buckmaster
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is pleased to host the exhibit “Of Cod and Communities” by Linda Buckmaster for the month of August in the Picker Room Gallery. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, August 3 at 4 p.m.\, Linda will give a half hour “tour” of the banners to offer an overview of the project of adapting her book “off the page.” She will comment on the content\, and explain the process for choosing and using the over 30 images. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is adapted from Linda’s book Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands\, a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. For the exhibit Buckmaster collaborated with Portland designer Lori Harley to create eight 3′ x 5′ soft fabric banners printed with text and images. They are designed to hang in community spaces such as libraries to reflect the centuries-long interrelationships between the North Atlantic cod and humans.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit is traveling to coastal libraries over the year. Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport is a co-sponsor of the exhibit\, which is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission\, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life\, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She is former Gulf and Atlantic Editor for “National Fisherman.” Her poetry\, essay\, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. On Saturday\, August 3 at 10:30 AM in the Picker Room\, Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice and the Maine State Water Commission will lead a conversation about local water rights in Maine. \n\n\n\nArtwork by Emily Van Brocklin Royal.\n\n\n\nNickie Sekera is the co-founder of Community Water Justice\, a decentralized network of people working for strong water protections at the community level across Wabanakiyik (Maine). She is a founding board member of the Saco Headwaters Alliance\, Fryeburg Water District Trustee\, and in 2022 was appointed by the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives to the Commission to Study the Role of Water as a Resource in Maine. \n\n\n\nSekera is also a journalist with Sunlight Media Collective\, a collective of Indigenous and non=indigenous journalists\, media makers and advocates\, centering the stories and experiences of Wabanaki people. \n\n\n\nIn the years leading up to these roles\, Nickie worked as an administrator of a wilderness medicine school for 18 years after working alongside Indigenous-led remote medical clinics and education projects within the conflict zones of Eastern Burma (Myanmar). Her work in that region led to serving on the Board of Directors of the US Campaign for Burma in Washington\, D.C.\, doing human rights and environmental justice advocacy. Most invaluably\, Nickie is a mother of a son who joins her in this work. Nickie’s son\, Luke\, plans to be present with her for this presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Water Justice is a network of front-line struggles in Maine determined to secure rights and accessibility to clean groundwater through education and action for future generations. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 3 at 4 p.m.\, Linda will give a half hour “tour” of the banners to offer an overview of the project of adapting her book “off the page.” She will comment on the content\, and explain the process for choosing and using the over 30 images. \n\n\n\nThe associated exhibit\, “Of Cod and Communities” by Linda Buckmaster\, will be on display during the month of August in the Picker Room Gallery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit is adapted from Linda’s book Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands\, a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. For the exhibit Buckmaster collaborated with Portland designer Lori Harley to create eight 3′ x 5′ soft fabric banners printed with text and images. They are designed to hang in community spaces such as libraries to reflect the centuries-long interrelationships between the North Atlantic cod and humans.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is traveling to coastal libraries over the year. Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport is a co-sponsor of the exhibit\, which is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission\, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life\, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She is former Gulf and Atlantic Editor for “National Fisherman.” Her poetry\, essay\, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. The young Susan basked in her brother Robert’s glow. Teachers singled her out because\, certainly\, the little sister would excel too. But how could she ever reach their expectations? Instead\, she rebelled\, chose the wrong men\, drank and took drugs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan talked her way into a job at Rolling Stone magazine in 1976. Come join in a discussion with the Camden Philosophical Society on Tuesday\, Aug. 20.  Over the coming months\, the Society will be delving into ethical and philosophical issues raised by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The introductory August session will focus on the varying definitions applied to terms used in discussing AI\, and also on the practical and ethical concerns raised by the different modes of advanced AI and their likely future combination.   \n\n\n\nThe next meeting will take place on Tuesday\, August 20\, at 3:30 – 5:30 PM EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. Rain location inside the library. \n\n\n\n“Alternative tragic Americana\, invocations for peace & judgment reshaping with bleeding heart stream of consciousness poems.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna May is a critically acclaimed songwriter & vocalist who strives to bring jazz elements into the format of folk. Originally from Connecticut\, before becoming a western transplant\, Anna is a singular artist whose songs bear a placelessness that lends to their timeless nature.  \n\n\n\nAnna’s lyrical sensibility is steeped in wisdom\, and layered with evocative musicality and metaphysical embroidery while eschewing the mainstream & parting with platitudes. Anna explores both estrangement and connection while taking cues from artists like Billie Holiday\, Shawn Colvin\, Neil Young\, Mazzy Star\, Lana del Rey\, and Leonard Cohen. As a yogi\, pianist\, teacher & poet\, she masterfully blends all of her influences into her songwriting. Anna May was nominated for best Indie song of 2023 by Indie Boulevard Magazine.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson (Temporary Date Change!)
DESCRIPTION:Please note that yoga will meet Thursday\, August 22 instead of Friday\, August 23 for this session.  \n\n\n\nYoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once\, grounding and uplifting. We link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience. \n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and run throughout the summer until September 6.  A limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join Tom DiMenna and Eddie Holm for an enjoyable evening of “Story Songs of the 70s” featuring music from Gordon Lightfoot\, Harry Chapin\, Cat Stevens live in the Amphitheatre on Thursday\, August 22 at 5:30 PM! This concert is FREE. Rain location inside the library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStory Songs of the 70s\n\n\n\nTom DiMenna will be joined by bass player Eddie Holm and friends to resurrect some of the 70s greatest story songs from three of the era’s greatest singer/songwriters: Gordon Lightfoot\, Cat Stevens\, and Harry Chapin. This devoted review will feature Maine based singer/songwriter Tom DiMenna\, whose tribute shows have sold out opera houses up and down the Maine coast. \n\n\n\nDiMenna’s impressive vocal range and guitar style artfully channel all of these revered artists\, and will surely satisfy their most die hard fans. Tom will also be backed with accompaniment to provide plenty of toe tapping for this very special evening. This is your chance to see what all the buzz is about. You may even be moved to sing along\, or at least hum!  The legend lives on!  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Go See Tom!” – Aimsel Ponti\, Portland Press Herald \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom DiMenna is a singer/songwriter based in Maine. He released his debut album\, “You Know Me\, My Devil Says” in 2020. His review of Cat Stevens gems sold out opera houses along the Maine coast in 2021\, and he’s now touring a wider review of story songs from the 1970s\, now including Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin. \n\n\n\n\n“I’ve been playing since college\, where I was a lowly hand signaler on the football team. Then I played a year of semi-pro football for the Bologna Warriors in Italy. The experience of quarterbacking an Italian Football team was pretty funny. I spent the next decade working on a movie about it. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, I studied at Second City and various other improv schools in Chicago\, L.A.\, and New York. One of the sketches\, where I played the ghost of Telly Savalas doing a lounge act\, became an off-broadway show. The show ran for a few years before I relocated with my partner\, Lauren\, to focus on music in Maine.”  \n\n\n\n\nEddie Holm grew up in various countries around the world\, and currently hails from Camden\, Maine. His career has involved audio for feature films\, as well as sound engineering at the famed Waldo Theater in Waldoboro\, Maine. For the last 15 years\, he’s been playing bass and guitar in various bands in North Carolina and New England.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes the Bay Winds North Wind Ensemble back to the beautiful Camden Amphitheatre for a FREE public concert on Sunday\, August 25\, at 3:00 p.m.! \n\n\n\nThis family-friendly event is the perfect way to spend a late August afternoon. The talented ensemble\, based in Rockland\, Maine\, is comprised of musicians who are high school age to retirees from the Midcoast. For more than ten years\, the Ensemble has performed concerts year-round and participates in several parades during the summer months. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket to the Amphitheatre concert for comfortable seating.

The Monday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library and simultaneously on Zoom on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am.  \n\n\n\nSummary: Three iconic transatlantic crossings are connected by a series of remarkable women whose personal stories are caught up in the swells of history. Beginning with Irish housemaid Lily Duggan\, who crosses paths with Frederick Douglass\, the novel follows her daughter and granddaughter\, Emily and Lottie\, and culminates in the present-day story of Hannah Carson\, in whom all the hopes and failures of previous generations live on. From the loughs of Ireland to the flatlands of Missouri and the windswept coast of Newfoundland\, their journeys mirror the progress and shape of history.

And how does that impact mental health and our response to environmental challenges?  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library welcomes Amory Lee for a dive to the exciting and interdisciplinary field of ecopsychology on Tuesday\, August 27 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nAmory will guide the audience through sensory exercises and contemplative questions that touch on education\, healthcare\, and food systems. Learn about the applications of ecopsychology from the personal to the community and come away feeling inspired! \n\n\n\n\nAmory Lee is a graduate student working on her Master of Arts in Ecopsychology and she is on a mission to spread the word about it.
