It takes its title from a poem read by Douglas Adams at the funeral of his wife Megan\, who has died from complications of MS. He also reads\, “Grief wrongs us so. I stand\, and wait\, and cry/For the absurd forgiveness\, not knowing why.” Abigail\, Megan’s friend and caretaker on Boston’s North Shore\, has an idea why Douglas might ask for Megan’s forgiveness. Her BA and MA are from the University of Northern Iowa\, and her MFA in Fiction is from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She and her husband Michael Burke raised their three children–Emma\, Brendan\, and Harper–in Wilton\, Maine\, a small town which curves around the southern end of Wilson Lake.  \n\n\n\nPatricia is Professor Emerita of Creative Writing at the University of Maine at Farmington\, where she taught fiction writing and directed the BFA Program in Creative Writing. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Agni Review\, The North American Review\, Prairie Schooner\, and other journals and anthologies. Her novel\, Necessary Places\, was published by Cadent Publishing (now part of Tilbury House). Her memoir\, Waiting to Begin\, was published by Bottom Dog Press. Her collection of short fiction\, Gods for Sale\, won the Serena McDonald Kennedy Fiction Award.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to teaching at UMF\, Patricia has taught classes in creative writing at Colby College\, the Franklin County Jail\, the Maine Women’s Correctional Center\, and at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town\, South Africa.

DESCRIPTION:Away from the noise of my mind\, the tranquility and mysterious nature of wateremerges inviting me to breathe \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library welcomes Sue Michlovitz for her photography and book exhibit “Breathe in Water” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of December*. The public is invited to an opening reception on Wednesday\, December 4\, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  \n\n\n\nWater is restorative and vital in all its forms. The paradox of water is in its character as peaceful yet invigorating\, both life-giving and life-threatening. My photographs shown in both prints and a fine art book\, embrace these contradictions. The blue-green colors are inspired by the seascapes of Winslow Homer and the lily ponds of Claude Monet. \n\n\n\nMy background as a physical therapist and clinical scientist inform my artistic approach. Observing the anatomy of water\, I am drawn to reflections\, refractions\, textures\, and layers of light and color. In some of my more abstracted images\, I often imagine a part or whole of a human figure\, appearing from within the shadows and layers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz reimagined her life by becoming a visual artist\, whose mediums include photography\, artist books and mixed media. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Media Arts from Maine Media College\, Rockport\, ME and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. \n\n\n\nAmong the places she has shown her art work over the last 2 years include: Cove Street Arts (Portland\, ME)\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts (Portland\, ME)\, and Photoville (Griffin Museum of Photography\, Winchester\, Mass)\, Rockport (Maine) Public Library(Rockport\, ME and Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME). One copy of the The Deluxe Edition of her book Breathe in Water was acquired by the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections. \n\n\n\nMichlovitz serves on the Board of Trustees\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA)\, Rockland\, ME. Her passions include education\, art\, community service\, and time in the outdoors. This event is put on by Camden Public Library and will take place at the Camden Opera House at 29 Elm Street on Saturday\, November 30\, 10:00 a.m.  \n\n\n\nEmbarking once again on a national bus tour\, this time Jan Brett will be visiting 23 cities in just 17 days in her show-stopping tour bus\, covered with characters from Alice in a Winter Wonderland –– and Camden will be one of her stops! Jan Brett will give a 20-minute drawing demonstration and talk about the inspiration behind Alice in a Winter Wonderland and her research trip to Alaska\, followed by a book signing. \n\n\n\n\nCopies of Alice in a Winter Wonderland are available for pre-order through Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop. Purchasing a book means that you will be given a wristband at the event that allows you to join the book signing line. Purchasing a book is required to join the signing line. Sherman’s will have extra copies of Alice in a Winter Wonderland and select backlist titles on-sale at the event. Arrive early! Chris has taught ornithology for the National Audubon Society at their Hog Island ecology camp on the coast of Maine\, where he was the Director of their Joy of Birding and Breaking into Birding programs for many years. A native New Englander and licensed Maine Guide\, Chris is very much at home on the coast or in the mountains where his fascination with wildlife and conservation is enthusiastically shared. \n\n\n\nSharon Fisher began her teaching career with a degree in history and a secondary school certification. However\, one summer in Boston\, having become involved in the administration of a Massachusetts state-wide educational program for very young\, special needs children\, her career took a major change in direction. With additional training and a second certification in elementary education\, her work with young children began. Her career spanned forty years of teaching in a variety of situations\, including both public and private schools. Sharon works for RAVEN Interpretive Programs in a number of capacities. She developed walking tours for historic places\, acts as an interpretive guide\, and presents ecological slide programs of the White Mountains. Sharon lives with her family in the White Mountains of Western Maine. \n\n\n\nJane Lounsbury left the Boston area to travel through Europe in the late sixties. Living and working in Manchester\, England; Madrid\, Spain; and Davos Dorf\, Switzerland; allowed her world perspective to be intimately shaped by many cultures and natural environments. After returning to the States and perching for a time within easy reach of the Rocky Mountains in Denver\, Colorado\, Jane migrated East\, back home to her native New England. She has over forty years’ administrative experience in a variety of fields\, including RAVEN Interpretive Programs. Jane assisted with the development of\, and participated in\, RAVEN’s wildlife trips and educational workshops. Jane now lives with her family on the “quiet side” of the White Mountains. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO \n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society A.I. Series: AI and Ethics "for and to a distant future"
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will meet on Tuesday\, November 19\, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. EDT in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nTechnology has given humanity the power to radically alter or end its existence as a naturally occurring lifeform\, to drive most other animals and plants into extinction\, and to destabilize the Earth’s climate and planetary operations. What does this power — whether affected through artificial intelligence (AI)\, climate alteration\, nuclear power\, or other technologies — mean for centuries of ethical thinking that was focused narrowly on personal relationships in the here and now? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo round out its series of philosophical discussions on AI\, the Camden Philosophical Society will in November explore this momentous question\, first posed in much those words by late 20th Century German/American philosopher Hans Jonas in An Imperative of Responsibility: In Search of an Ethics for the Technological Age. \n\n\n\nThe specific reading that will guide the discussion forms the first chapter of that book and was published separately as an article entitled “Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New Tasks of Ethics.” \n\n\n\nIn the reading\, Jonas starts with the proposition that “modern technology has turned into an infinite forward thrust of the [human] race… whose success [at achieving] maximal control over things and himself appears as the consummation of his destiny.” \n\n\n\nArguably foreshadowing the rise of the prestige and stock-market value of giant US tech companies\, he notes that modern technology not only creates through its success a positive\, self-reinforcing feedback loop\, it starves “whatever else belongs to the fullness of man.” It has “obliterated” the distinction between artificial and natural and between nature and mechanical creations of man. \n\n\n\nInstead of looking back at humanity’s frequent assumption that it holds rights over non-human creatures and even the Earth itself — “dominion” in Anglophone Christian terminology – Jonas contends that our technological power has given us novel responsibilities to protect the non-human world. Has “the biosphere as a whole and in its parts\, now subject to our power … become a human trust [that] has something of a moral claim on us not only for our ulterior sake but for its own and in its own right?” \n\n\n\nThese issues are raised within the context of specific technological advances\, including the potential that humanity will learn to indefinitely extend individual human lives and to alter human behavior and learning capacity to benefit social aims\, rather than individual desires. \n\n\n\nAnother aspect of the “new ethics of responsibility for and to a distant future” that Jonas flags is “the doubt it casts on the capacity of representative government\, operating by its normal principals and procedures\, to meet the new demands.” \n\n\n\nThe reading can be found online here: https://inters.org/jonas-technology-responsability Alternatively\, you can read Chapter 1 of The Imperative of Responsibility\, entitled “The Altered Nature of Human Responsibility.”  If reading time is short\, Section IV\, “Earlier Forms of Future Oriented Ethics\,” can be skipped\, as it will probably not be central to the discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Solar power is providing energy independence\, cost savings\, and reduction of fossil fuel emissions in neighboring towns. \n\n\n\nJoin this Camden Talks Climate event\, hosted by CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) in partnership with the Camden Public Library on Thursday November 14\, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. Thomaston Town Planner John Fancy and Lincolnville Town Administrator Dave Kinney will talk about how municipalities that have invested in solar arrays have reduced large electrical bills\, gone to 100% clean energy for municipal energy\, and in some places earned back significant dollars that can be reinvested in other sustainable initiatives. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy\, Thomaston’s Project Planner\, will explain how that village significantly reduced electricity bills over the last 14 years (and have paid off the bonds). Dave Kinney\, Lincolnville’s Town Administrator\, will discuss his town’s approach to going toward 100% clean energy\, providing financial benefits as well. \n\n\n\nWe’ll hear how towns are building upon those successes to reduce carbon emissions in other areas. The evening will finish with an extensive question and answer period so that attendees can discuss how Camden can move toward 100% clean municipal energy while also receiving cost savings \n\n\n\nCurrently Camden leases a solar array from Revision Energy at Sagamore Farm that covers 7 to 8% of the town’s energy needs. Town solar projects take perseverance and citizen involvement. Yet the benefits lead to reduced carbon emissions\, and often increased revenue that can be invested in other sustainable programs\, eg.\, EV chargers\, weatherization programs\, and low-income home retrofit programs. Dave drives an EV. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy is a Maine native who grew up in the greater Portland area\, moved to the mid-coast in 1971\, and now lives in a totally electric home in Appleton with 18 solar panels on the roof.John spent over 50 years working with public and private water and wastewater operations\, including systems from Washington to Cumberland Counties and all in between. His specialty is finding solutions to operations that are not performing as they were designed to. John was a consultant to the Waldoboro Utility District for over 40 years and now works with the Town of Thomaston. Wastewater systems are large users of electricity since they often have high horsepower motors in pumps and process equipment. One solution now available is the use of solar panels. This was the case in Thomaston where John developed and implemented a solar program beginning in 2010. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening is being presented by CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Doble on a wide assortment of large gongs and Forest Weston on didgeridoo as well as Maleine for a special\, outdoor\, nighttime\, eerie sonic experience to celebrate the season. This spooky sound bathing session will take place on Thursday\, October 31\, at 6:00 PM in the Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nOn All Hallow’s Eve we will be bathing the Amphitheatere in mystical sound to help transport you on an inner journey. Think of this as sonic meditation\, best experienced in a very relaxed position with closed eyes. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes author Amy Fradel for a talk about her book Four Acres Under Slavnik: A Slovenian Migration Story on Tuesday\, October 29\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nWhat began as a personal exploration of Fradel’s family’s immigrant history became a deep dive into global issues surrounding immigration\, racism\, and the rise of authoritarian regimes that the world still grapples with today.  \n\n\n\nIt is also an intimate story of ordinary people facing the challenges of life in the new country and of those striving to survive in the old country during cataclysmic times. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nA traveler\, nurse practitioner\, and writer\, Amy Fradel lives in Maine with her husband\, Arch Davis\, and visits with her extended family in Slovenia often. She is the 2022 winner of the Slovenian Union of America Literary Competition. She recently presented her book to the Slovenian Migration Institute in Ljubljana\, as well as at the Universities of Primorska and Nova Gorica. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the Camden Public Library’s “Discover History Month” series of history-themed programs\, events\, and exhibits.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial thank you to our Discover History Month sponsor\, The Smiling Cow. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join the Coastal Friendship Circle on Sunday\, October 27 at 2:00 pm in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library to explore the topic of neurodiversity. We will hear from private practice clinician Kella River\, LCSW\, LADC who specializes in neurodiversity\, specifically ADHD and ASD ( autism spectrum disorder). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany adults remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and frustrated/mystified by their differences as they navigate the neurotypical social world.   \n\n\n\nTogether\, we will look at neurodivergent affirming models for ADHD and autism spectrum. DESCRIPTION:Into the Ether: Life\, Death and the Illusion of Choice  \n\n\n\nThe Extraordinary Life and Death of Kate Banks \n\n\n\nwith Amy Banks\, MD and Nancy Banks\, PhD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library warmly welcomes Amy Banks\, MD and Nancy Banks\, PhD\, for an exploration of the life\, death and wisdom of their sister Kate Banks\, a prolific children’s book author\, energy healer\, wife\, mother\, sister\, daughter\, aunt… and poet. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Picker Room on Saturday\, October 26\, at 3:00 p.m. There will be refreshments available as well as copies of Into the Ether by Kate Banks for sale. Free and open to all. \n\n\n\nKate Banks\, award winning children’s book author\, “chose” to end her life by voluntary assisted death on February 24\, 2024\, ending a two-year odyssey with stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer. Kate believed death was an extension of life\, a transition that all living beings experience. \n\n\n\nDuring Kate’s battle with cancer\, she began writing poetry seriously. She described her creative process as channeling universal energies and wisdom onto the page. In stunning detail and profound prose\, she shared pivotal moments in her own life that shaped her earthly mind and body and allowed her to exit this life on her own terms. \n\n\n\nAmy Banks\, MD\, is a a Lexington psychiatrist\, author\, and teacher. Nancy Banks\, PhD\, is a New York City educator. \n\n\n\nInto the Ether was selected by People Magazine as one of the “Best New Books” in October 2024.

Free and open to all. \n\n\n\nFresh off their 2023 win at the Thomas Point Bluegrass Festival band competition\, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are shaking up the bluegrass world with their fresh take on traditional music. Led by John Lennon Award-winning songwriter Sumner\, the string band’s dynamic sound showcases bold chord progressions\, unforgettable stories\, and mesmerizing musicianship from fiddler Kat Wallace and bassist Mike Siegel. With their grassy roots\, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light create a sound that’s both timeless and utterly unique\, captivating audiences with every note they play. \n\n\n\n\nThough Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds\, this is true-blue singer-songwriter folk through and through\, too: achingly clear\, and wide open to the world\, with twang and tenderness enough to carry us through the fire of an unusually difficult year.\n\n\n\n– Cover Lay Down\n\n\n\n\nWith songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice\, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions\, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass). \n\n\n\nSumner is no stranger to the stage. Hear about the old roads\, the Civilian Conservation Corps\, the ski trails\, the horse rental era\, construction of the multi-use\, other changes to the system\, and our current focus. \n\n\n\nErik Brooks will lead a discussion of trail history from pre-park days to more recent times with a panel of other Camden Hills State Park experts. \n\n\n\nCome to learn\, or join in the discussion! If you have lived here awhile and frequented or worked in the park through some of its changes\, we’d love your participation and insights! Come to swap stories or just to listen.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrails Supervisor Erik Brooks is enthusiastic about trail improvements but values understanding a trail’s history. From Harpswell\, Maine\, he visited the park occasionally in his youth\, but relies on Camden Herald digitized archives and the stories of older locals to learn about his workplace. Between the two sources he has found some intriguing stories and characters.
