DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes Patent & Trademark Resource Center representative John Hutchinson for a presentation all about patents on Thursday\, June 20\, at 6:30 p.m. This program is in-person only. \n\n\n\nThe number of people applying for patents and trademarks greatly increased during the pandemic and remains high. Obtaining a patent can be important for an inventor\, and obtaining a trademark can be an important step in founding a business.  \n\n\n\nHutchinson will explain the basic concepts behind these intellectual properties\, how to get them\, and how to do a search on the official US Patent & Trademark database. He will also share a fun compilation of famous historical patents.  \n\n\n\nJohn Hutchinson is the Business Librarian at the Fogler Library at the University of Maine\, as well as the representative for the Patent & Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). Orono’s PTRC is a public service of the Fogler Library in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Enjoy the music and celebrate continuing the Songwriters Coffeehouse tradition. \n\n\n\nThe songwriters have been meeting regularly all year to share their music and offer support and suggestions to one another\, and are eager to present their new work to the public. \n\n\n\n“The songwriters are a remarkable and talented group\,” said Ken Gross. “They are a very supportive\, encouraging\, and creative collection of musicians\, and they have been working hard at their songwriting and collaborations. The performance will feature a range of styles and instruments\, from six-string guitar to piano to a cappella\, and a range from singer-songwriter to folk and folk rock to country.” \n\n\n\nLeft to right\, the songwriters are Steve Chiasson\, Tristan Lewis\, Frank Boscoe\, Ellen Berry\, Ken Gross; and in the front row\, Carol Graff and Liz Cunningham.

SUMMARY:Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is pleased to offer a walking tour of downtown Camden on Fridays at 4:00 p.m.\, from June 28 through September 13. This entertaining and educational walking tour features a handful of historic sites in downtown Camden\, including the Camden Public Library grounds and Amphitheatre\, which were designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013. Learn about the people\, places\, and industries that continue to make Camden a special destination. \n\n\n\nPlease note there is no walking tour on July 5 and July 12. The tours will resume on July 19. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tour begins in the Children’s Garden of the Camden Public Library on Atlantic Avenue and ends at the Village Green. Moderate walking involved; suitable for all ages. Much of the tour will be conducted outdoors and will be weather dependent. \n\n\n\nThe tour is free of charge and open to all\, though donations (to benefit the library) are cheerfully accepted. Reservations are not required. Please contact the library at 207-236-3440 if you have questions.

DESCRIPTION:This new group\, Embroideresses of the Sewing Circle\, will meet on most 2nd and 4th Saturdays\, 10 AM – 12 PM in the Picker Room. We are a friendly and meditative group of people creating circles or “mandalas” with colorful and various stitches in the search of emotional calm and mental & spiritual wisdom. We welcome any in curiosity of the same wonderment and delight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease drop-in or attend regularly. Bring an 8” square of felt and your sewing paraphernalia\, plus your Gentle Self\, and be gladly received. We include all skill levels. \n\n\n\nHandwork Heals. \n\n\n\nThis group is led by Robinsunne\, a local mixed-media fiber artist. She has taught at the Library during some Jumpstart Januarys\, and exhibited in the past two Accordion Book Shows hosted by Amy Hand. She also contributes to and trades with the Artist Trading Card box at the front desk.

SUMMARY:"Maine's Own" 195th Army Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:The 195th Maine Army Band will perform a free public concert in the Amphitheatre at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday\, June 30. Volunteers from the Camden and West Bay Rotary clubs are helping to promote and support the event. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and arrive before the concert begins \n\n\n\nThe 195th Army National Guard Band includes musicians from all over Maine. It offers a wide array of performing groups\, including a full concert band\, marching band\, jazz band\, brass band\, and pop band. The Band is directed by CW4 Brady Harris. \n\n\n\n“We are delighted to return once again to the Camden Amphitheatre\,” said Sergeant First Class Richard Romanelli. “We will have our full complement of musicians for the Camden performance\, and we have a great lineup of music to offer Camden.” \n\n\n\nAll band members participate in the group’s concert band\, performing a broad repertoire geared toward public audiences at military and civic functions. The band carries on the proud tradition of military bands past and present\, playing everything from military marches to significant wind band compositions and works by area composers. \n\n\n\nThe 195th Army Band promotes readiness by performing music that boosts troop morale\, unit esprit\, and military operations. The 195th also performs for a broad array of community events such as “Home Days\,” parades\, community concerts\, and commissioning events.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Rockland photographer Jim Dugan for an exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of July\, featuring a mixture of his windjammer photos and his “Maine Kaleidoscopes.” \n\n\n\nFor those keeping track\, yes\, Jim Dugan did just have another show of his photography at another institution just down the road. But fear not! Jim has changed the show enough that even if you saw the other one\, you’ll find exciting new work in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n“I mostly consider myself a straight photographer\,” Jim says\, “But I’ve embraced digital processes and all of my photos now go through some digital enhancements. That’s mostly intended to heighten the feeling I had when making the exposure. Sometimes\, though\, I’m looking to transform the image into something completely new.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“After the Bake”\n\n\n\n“Popham Sand Kaleidoscope”\n\n\n\n“Departure”\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJim teaches photography aboard the schooner Mary Day (docked just down the hill from the Library) and has served as crew aboard her a few times. His Kaleidoscopes series is digital composites that transform a photo of a recognizable Maine place into something completely different.

This talk focuses on hand-built trails. \n\n\n\nErik Brooks grew up in Harpswell\, Maine where he first assisted with trail maintenance on the local Cliff Trail and with a family friend on the Appalachian Trail. He worked three summers on the White Mountain Professional Trail Crew during college\, and has volunteered with organizations such as the Maine Appalachian Trail Club for several years. DESCRIPTION:Recently\, Morgan Talty\, author of Night of the Living Rez\, gave a shout-out to short-story cycles on Maine Public Radio’s Maine Calling\, noting that they’re an increasingly popular genre of fiction. But why? What exactly is a short-story cycle? What are its characteristics? As compared to a traditional short-story collection or novel\, what advantages—and challenges—might it hold for readers? And if you’re intrigued by the possibility of writing one\, how might you begin?  \n\n\n\nJoin Rockport author Laura Bonazzoli to explore this fascinating genre. Laura will also read excerpts from her own short-story cycle\, Consecration Pond\, which was described by Publishers Weekly as poetic and haunting\, “a solid\, meditative collection of interconnected short stories that weave together seemingly disparate narratives into a satisfying and cohesive whole.” Consecration Pond was published by indie press Toad Hall Editions in August 2022\, and is available at local bookstores\, directly from the publisher at toadhalleditions.ink\, and as an e-book for Kindle readers at Amazon.com. Signed copies of Consecration Pond will also be available at the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Bonazzoli’s fiction has appeared in numerous publications\, including Evening Street Review\, Exposition Review\, The Sandy River Review\, and many others. She has also published poetry and personal essays in literary magazines and anthologies. After the publication of her short stories “Prayer of the Bell” and “Spring Ice\,” she began working on a collection of linked stories of loss and resilience that all take place on a fictional pond in Maine. That collection became the short-story cycle\, Consecration Pond.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will be continuing its discussion of Scottish-American moral and political philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s book Dependent Rational Animals at its next gathering on July 16. MacIntyre’s treatment of the importance of community – at a level larger than family but smaller than the nation – and his advocacy for “just generosity” in this context will be a particular focus of the July discussion. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe Society’s July 16 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering at 3:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for summer visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society in Portugal\, England\, Arizona\, or wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nDependent Rational Animals was written in 1999. It further develops or revises a number of themes introduced by MacIntyre in his 1981 classic After Virtue. The 1999 work is available for free online here: https://vdocuments.net/alasdair-macintyre-dependent-rational-animals.html?page=1  Chapters 9-11 are the highlighted readings for July. \n\n\n\nThe initial chapters of Dependent Rational Animals raise and explore the questions of why it is important for humans to pay attention to and understand both what we have in common with other intelligent animals\, and what makes “attention to human vulnerability and disability important for moral philosophers.” Beginning in Chapter 9\, MacIntyre explores his contention that developing the virtues of “rational independence” and “acknowledged dependence” require social groups (communities) that differ from either the modern family or the national state. \n\n\n\nIn an attempt to bridge what is often presented as a chasm between Enlightenment individualism and the importance of community\, MacIntyre equates the two: “Note that on this account the good of the individual is not subordinated to the good of the community nor vice versa. The individual\, in order not just to pursue but even to define her or his good in concrete terms has first to recognize the goods of the community as goods that he or she must make her own.” \n\n\n\nMacIntyre then ties this into a virtuous attitude that he calls “just generosity” and which he traces back to Thomas Aquinas. Again\, MacIntyre sees this as a bridge between what are sometimes posed as conflicting obligations – for justice\, i.e. that which is owed; and for generosity\, inspired by sympathy for the suffering of others and also by pursuit of the virtue of doing good. \n\n\n\nMacIntyre is a self-described Aristotelian-Thomist. He is a renowned proponent of virtue ethics\, and of communitarianism\, in contrast to liberal capitalism. Born in Scotland and educated in England\, he taught initially at the UK universities of Leeds\, Manchester and Oxford before moving to the US in 1969. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Notre Dame\, having in addition been on the faculties of Brandeis\, Duke\, Vanderbilt and Boston Universities.

At the same time its both lonely and delightful. \n\n\n\nThis recording has given me the opportunity to express the love and joy I feel for my family altogether and my granddaughter\, Lola Simone\, in particular.  These songs express my hopes for the future as well as the concerns so many of us share. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club’s 76th Annual Garden Tour will take place\, rain or shine\, Thursday\, July 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This year\, the Tour will feature the extraordinary interior and gardens of the 1887 summer “Castle by the Sea”\, which became The Norumbega Inn. In addition\, there will be other Camden gardens featuring lush perennial borders\, unique color combinations for the garden\, and sustainable horticulture with native plantings. For the first time\, the 66-acre Merryspring Nature Center will be a part of the Tour with its beautiful display gardens and arboretum of native trees. \n\n\n\nTICKETS are available online at www.camdengardenclub.org. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo complement the visual beauty of the Tour\, a selection of immersive exhibits and demonstrations will be presented throughout the day. Sample presentations include Framed Flower Art\, Hypertufa Demonstration\, Dahlia Workshop\, Active Native Plant Growing\, and From Seed to Bottle; Making Salve from an Organic Maine Garden.  \n\n\n\nThe Club will welcome a roster of new and returning musicians. Performance locations and exhibit times will be announced before Tour Day.  \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to announce that en plein air painter\, Cassie Sarno – a contemporary\, realist painter will be our featured artist. Proceeds from the Tour support the maintenance of Camden public gardens\, including the Camden-Rockport Archway flower boxes\, The Village Green\, The Main Street Bridge flower boxes\, Laite Beach Children’s Amphitheatre\, downtown lamppost baskets\, the Public Landing perennial beds\, Traffic Islands (Main Street and High Street and Mountain Street intersection) the Commercial Street barrels and the barrels at The Public Landing\, and Penobscot Chamber of Commerce flower beds\, In 2024\, This summer the Club will add three new gardens-Postage Stamp Native Garden\, the new Mural Garden on Mechanic Street\, and the new Shade Garden near the Public Landing and a significantly increased scholarship program for college students pursuing a horticulturally-related program of study. \n\n\n\nFurther detailed information about our artists will be featured in the coming weeks.  \n\n\n\nThe Norumbega Inn. The Monday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library and simultaneously on Zoom on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am.  \n\n\n\nSummary: A discarded painting in a junk pile\, a skeleton in an attic\, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands\, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit\, obsession\, and injustice across American history Kentucky\, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South.
