SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: "In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays" by Bertrand Russell
DESCRIPTION:With summer almost gone\, the Camden Philosophical Society is taking an early autumnal detour at its Tuesday\, Sep. 16\, gathering to discuss a selection of readings from In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays by the evidently rarely idle 20th century British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell. His views were often outspoken\, impassioned\, and controversial\, but a century later\, many of them are still worth reading for their eloquence\, wit and provocation. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe three essays we’ll be reading — chapters I (In Praise of Idleness)\, II (“Useless” Knowledge)\, and XI (Of Men and Insects) — provide a quick introduction to Russell’s humanistic social and political worldview. \n\n\n\nIn chapter I\, Russell takes on one of Western culture’s most sacred cows: work. In his view\, work is required in so far as it can provide the necessities of life for everyone. Beyond that it becomes an instrument of power and slavery. With that in mind\, Russell welcomed such things as technological advances that could reduce the amount of time needed to produce those necessities of life and increase the amount of leisure for everyone. Leisure\, for Russell\, is the mark of civilization. With it\, a person can create enjoyment or innovate as one sees fit.  \n\n\n\nIn the second chapter\, he meditates on one of the leisure pursuits: learning for the sake of learning\, exploring “useless” avenues and byways of human history\, culture\, or experience. For Russell\, this kind of learning is a good in itself that can bring joy and make life worth living. It can help one to develop a more humane approach to life. He does not disregard “useful” technical knowledge\, but he does argue that “useless” knowledge can help to develop perspective\, moderation\, judgement\, and purpose.  \n\n\n\nIn the final selected chapter (XI)\, Russell reflects on humanity’s hubris. Does our preoccupation with domination cloud our ability to understand the ramifications of that dominance? Do we take the time to consider the consequences? It’s a very short chapter\, but thought provoking all the same. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSome Bertrand Russell tidbits: \n\n\n\nIn addition to being recognized as a mathematician\, a logician\, a coauthor of Principia Mathematica with A. N. Whitehead\, a cofounder of Analytic Philosophy with G. E. Moore\, mentor to Ludwig Wittgenstein\, a Nobel Prize recipient (Literature 1950)\, a committed anti-war activist\, and the driving force behind the “Russell-Einstein Manifesto\,” written in an effort to ban the use of weapons of mass destruction\, Russell was a public intellectual involved in contemporary social issues of the day. He was imprisoned several times for his anti-war activities\, while ultimately receiving the Order of Merit from King George VI in 1949. He was an earl\, a politician\, a social commentator\, an atheist\, a socialist\, and a lecturer at Trinity College\, Cambridge; Harvard; London School of Economics\, Johns Hopkins; Bryn Mawr\, etc. His godfather was John Stuart Mill. He met with Lenin in the USSR and left the meeting underwhelmed. He attempted to mediate a de escalation between Khrushchev and Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes photographer and creator Nick Watts for his exhibition The Wanderings of a Waterman\, featuring immersive underwater photography from around the world. The exhibit will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of September.*  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to an exhibit reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 20\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\nMy name is Nick Watts\, and The Wanderings of a Waterman is my way of sharing a life shaped\, challenged\, and inspired by the sea. \n\n\n\nThe ocean carried me to Mid-Coast Maine\, and it’s the art\, the people\, the possibilities—and yes\, always the sea—that has kept me here. Wanderings is a collection from the last decade I spent tracing the edges of the world’s oceans. It was beneath the waves where I felt most alive\, where awe became my teacher\, and where I discovered that life can be deeply\, joyfully lived in rhythm with the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt began with what I thought would be a six-month trip to New Zealand\, my only intention to learn how to surf and explore. Instead\, it became a ten-year walk-a-bout where I discovered that life is meant to be slow and intentional. To truly live is to go\, try\, fail\, and to grow through the unknown. \n\n\n\nI never got on my connecting flight home from NZ—I stayed. Fiji pulled me in\, and from there\, the sea became both my path and my compass. Without enough for a plane ticket\, I found another way: six months\, six boats\, and seventeen islands later\, I had hitchsailed 3\,400 nautical miles to Australia through countries I didn’t know existed. I was stranded on islands and the raw edges of the world. I learned to rely on strangers\, to adapt\, to trust\, and to listen to the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat voyage\, and the years of adventures that followed\, gave me more than stories—it gave me a way of seeing. Sailing\, diving\, spearfishing\, foraging\, surfing: each taught me to embrace wonder\, creativity\, and resilience. The sea offered me not just a livelihood\, but a way of life. \n\n\n\nThis gallery is a glimpse of that journey. It is both a record of where I’ve been and an offering of inspiration for wherever you’re going. My hope is that it stirs something in you\, a reminder that adventure waits just beyond the edge of comfort—and that joy is found in the wanderings.  \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, June 20 and continuing through September. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Fall 2025 Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group will meet on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Dates are 9/23\, 10/7 (bonus session)\, 10/28\, 11/11\, 11/25\, 12/9\, 12/23\, 1/13/26\, 1/27/26. May include a zoom component if desired. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur first book will be Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet by Kate Marvel. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. This event is FREE and open to everyone. \n\n\n\nWhat do laws written in the 18th and 19th centuries mean here in the 21st? Join the ACLU of Maine legal director Carol Garvan for an informative talk on the origins and modern-day applications of some of the constitutional amendments that form the bedrock of our democracy. By investigating the text of key amendments and their application in legal cases before the courts today\, we will explore the Constitution as both a historical and a living document. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore joining the ACLU of Maine\, Carol Garvan worked at Johnson & Webbert\, LLP\, where she spent over a decade litigating civil rights and employment cases in Maine\, with a focus on systemic discrimination and wage theft. While in private practice\, Carol worked to create collaborations between her firm and nonprofit organizations. \n\n\n\nCarol earned her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College and her Juris Doctor from UC Berkeley School of Law. Before law school\, Carol taught middle school reading in Oakland\, California. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol lives with her husband\, children\, and terriers in Gardiner\, Maine\, where she enjoys gardening\, swimming\, ice skating with her kids\, hiking with their dogs\, and making miniature things.

She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. The Within the Whale experience is for ALL AGES\, adults and kids alike! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJessica Woodend\, founder of Within the Whale\, is a dedicated Wildlife Educator and Conservation Advocate. Her passion is connecting people of all ages to the wonders of wildlife and conservation.  \n\n\n\nShe is an award-winning program designer nationally recognized for her wildlife programming by the National Park Service Interpretive Development Program.

SUMMARY:"Wasted Food in Maine: An Overview" with Susanne Lee
DESCRIPTION:Susanne Lee\, faculty fellow at UMaine’s Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions will tell us about Food Rescue Maine and lead a conversation about statewide efforts to reduce wasted food by engaging with businesses\, institutions\, and households. This takes place on Tuesday\, September 30\, 3:00 p.m. at Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nThis program is put on by Nativity Lutheran Church‘s Creation Care Team and part of their program series “Wasted Food: Challenges and Community Solutions.” This event is co-sponsored by Camden Public Library.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusanne Lee’s career as an entrepreneurial business executive saw her successfully creating\, launching and operating multi-million-dollar consumer products brands and businesses with Fortune 100 companies as well as lean start-ups. Her skills include strategic solutions\, P&L management\, brand marketing\, consumer insights\, business development\, product design and manufacturing\, licensing\, merchandising\, operations\, and strong team-building. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nComing to academia as the Executive-in-Residence at the Maine Business School (MBS)\, Susanne utilized her business management and marketing experience to bring the “real-world” into MBS courses and projects. Key accomplishments include innovative initiatives like the Maine Business School Speaker Series: “Thriving Under Thirty”\, the UMaine/MBS experiential learning\, “Corporate Classroom” held at Hannaford corporate offices\, and “live” case studies with Bangor Savings\, JC Penney\, and more. \n\n\n\nSusanne’s most popular MBS coursework focused on sustainable business and marketing highlighting companies such as Patagonia whose superior “triple bottom line” strategy benefits their “profits\, people and the planet”.  In 2019\, Susanne was awarded a Mitchell Center grant to fund a multidisciplinary student research project identifying sustainable\, “triple bottom line” zero-waste food system solutions for Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusanne joined the Mitchell Center as a Faculty Fellow in Fall 2021 as part of the Mitchell Center’s Materials Management team.  Within that transdisciplinary group\, Susanne leads a student/faculty team working directly with state\, business\, and community stakeholders as well as national and global food waste experts like ReFED and Harvard Food Law & Policy to develop solutions to end food waste in Maine.  Each year\, the students implement a number of stakeholder-driven pilots to help Maine communities and organizations to build a sustainable\, waste-free\, circular food system. Statewide progress is shared through the Maine Food Waste Solutions Summit held annually in April.

SUMMARY:"How to Research Your Old Camden House" with Dr. Jennifer Gromada — Camden-Rockport Historical Society Series
DESCRIPTION:During this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Dr. Jennifer Gromada for a presentation on researching Camden homes\, on Tuesday\, September 30\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany people are curious about their home’s history and those who lived there in the past. If you are interested in creating a more comprehensive history of a home’s ownership\, which in Camden may extend back as far as the eighteenth century\, historical research can be a rewarding exercise. This presentation will guide you through a variety of steps and sources to help you discover more about the history of a specific property in Camden\, its owners\, and residents. During this presentation you will learn: \n\n\n\n\nA brief history of the political boundaries of Camden \n\n\n\nCamden-specific historical research resources\, including those in the Walsh History Center\n\n\n\nHow to use Geographic Information System (GIS) maps (Appendix A.4) \n\n\n\nA description of property transfers and how to use the Knox County Registry of Deeds \n\n\n\nUseful Internet sources\, such as Ancestry.com\, Findagrave.com\, and Newspapers.com\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jennifer Gromada moved to Camden with her husband John in 2016 as the last of their seven children were finishing college. After retiring from a professional career that included executive roles in the defense\, financial markets\, and technology industries\, she returned to school\, earning a Doctorate in Arts & Letters in 2019. Jennifer currently works as an independent scholar and writer.  She serves on Camden’s Historic Resources Committee and is a member of the Camden Public Library Board of Trustees. Her publication\, “House Research Guide: Discovering Your Camden Home’s History\,” was the result of research conducted on her own historic home’s history.
