DESCRIPTION:Camden Public library welcomes journalist and author Susan Kellam for a book talk and discussion about her newly-released memoir\, Brilliant Disguise. This event will take place on Thursday\, August 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room.  \n\n\n\nAbout Brilliant Disguise\n\n\n\nAfter their nuclear family exploded into a vaporous mushroom cloud\, the two siblings could only\, as Bert the Turtle jingled in civil-defense cartoons\, duck and cover. The young Susan basked in her brother Robert’s glow. Teachers singled her out because\, certainly\, the little sister would excel too. But how could she ever reach their expectations? Instead\, she rebelled\, chose the wrong men\, drank and took drugs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan talked her way into a job at Rolling Stone magazine in 1976. Three years later\, as an organizer of five nights of No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden with Bruce Springsteen\, Bonnie Raitt\, and many more\, she got snared in the rock politics scramble and her brother saved her. Many years later\, though\, she could not save him. \n\n\n\nOnly in retrospect can Susan piece together how Robert’s too-brief life was a brilliant disguise. The Obama administration tapped her to edit the Economic Report of the President for the four years of his second term; the Biden administration did the same for his first year. Susan was a contributing writer on the book\, How Ten Global Cities Take on Homelessness (May 2021\, University of California Press). The FREE concert takes place on Tuesday\, August 13\, at 6:30 p.m. Rain location inside the library. \n\n\n\nRenowned for their diverse playlist\, Anni and the Rainmakers seamlessly blend original songs with classic rock\, soul\, blues\, and R&B numbers. This eclectic mix sets the stage for unforgettable live experiences and has earned them accolades\, such as being voted Waldo County’s Number One Band by The Republican Journal and the Village Soup’s prestigious “Best of the Best” survey three years in a row. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAt the forefront of the group is the incredibly talented lead singer\, Ann Brindle. With a background that includes Virginia bands After Six\, Front Page News\, and The Groove\, Ann possesses a remarkable vocal range that allows her to deliver exceptional performances\, ranging from the powerful tunes of Janis Joplin to the soulful ballads of Whitney Houston. \n\n\n\nSupporting Ann’s dynamic vocals is her husband\, Barry Brindle\, a gifted guitarist who honed his craft in the popular Connecticut group Biggio Sound before being joined by Ann in The Groove. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 3 at 4 p.m.\, Linda will give a half hour “tour” of the banners to offer an overview of the project of adapting her book “off the page.” She will comment on the content\, and explain the process for choosing and using the over 30 images. \n\n\n\nThe associated exhibit\, “Of Cod and Communities” by Linda Buckmaster\, will be on display during the month of August in the Picker Room Gallery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit is adapted from Linda’s book Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands\, a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. For the exhibit Buckmaster collaborated with Portland designer Lori Harley to create eight 3′ x 5′ soft fabric banners printed with text and images. They are designed to hang in community spaces such as libraries to reflect the centuries-long interrelationships between the North Atlantic cod and humans.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is traveling to coastal libraries over the year. Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport is a co-sponsor of the exhibit\, which is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission\, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life\, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She is former Gulf and Atlantic Editor for “National Fisherman.” Her poetry\, essay\, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her hybrid\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press 2022) was a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. Her traveling banners exhibit adapted from Elemental\, “Of Cod and Communities\,” is in libraries along the coast this year\, and will be at the Bangor Library in October and November.

SUMMARY:Public event: "Water Privatization: A Dilemma for Maine Communities" with Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice\, and the Maine State Water Commission
DESCRIPTION:Nativity Lutheran Church‘s Creation Care Team presents the first event in their series of talks called Turn On the Taps: Ensuring Clean Water For All. On Saturday\, August 3 at 10:30 AM in the Picker Room\, Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice and the Maine State Water Commission will lead a conversation about local water rights in Maine. \n\n\n\nArtwork by Emily Van Brocklin Royal.\n\n\n\nNickie Sekera is the co-founder of Community Water Justice\, a decentralized network of people working for strong water protections at the community level across Wabanakiyik (Maine). She is a founding board member of the Saco Headwaters Alliance\, Fryeburg Water District Trustee\, and in 2022 was appointed by the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives to the Commission to Study the Role of Water as a Resource in Maine. \n\n\n\nSekera is also a journalist with Sunlight Media Collective\, a collective of Indigenous and non=indigenous journalists\, media makers and advocates\, centering the stories and experiences of Wabanaki people. \n\n\n\nIn the years leading up to these roles\, Nickie worked as an administrator of a wilderness medicine school for 18 years after working alongside Indigenous-led remote medical clinics and education projects within the conflict zones of Eastern Burma (Myanmar). Her work in that region led to serving on the Board of Directors of the US Campaign for Burma in Washington\, D.C.\, doing human rights and environmental justice advocacy. Most invaluably\, Nickie is a mother of a son who joins her in this work. Nickie’s son\, Luke\, plans to be present with her for this presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Water Justice is a network of front-line struggles in Maine determined to secure rights and accessibility to clean groundwater through education and action for future generations. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club’s 76th Annual Garden Tour will take place\, rain or shine\, Thursday\, July 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This year\, the Tour will feature the extraordinary interior and gardens of the 1887 summer “Castle by the Sea”\, which became The Norumbega Inn. In addition\, there will be other Camden gardens featuring lush perennial borders\, unique color combinations for the garden\, and sustainable horticulture with native plantings. For the first time\, the 66-acre Merryspring Nature Center will be a part of the Tour with its beautiful display gardens and arboretum of native trees. \n\n\n\nTICKETS are available online at www.camdengardenclub.org. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo complement the visual beauty of the Tour\, a selection of immersive exhibits and demonstrations will be presented throughout the day. This two person show is a multi-media and multi-dimensional presentation in song\, storytelling and plenty of laughter. From that point on\, I’ve enjoyed so many adventures following the music through folk\, blues\, funk\, experimental soundscapes\, and scoring film.  \n\n\n\nBut in the end\, it seems I always come back to Claudette\, that sweet hunk of wood I’ve been carrying around with me for 50 years.  (She’s a Guild D40) It seemed perfectly natural that now\, sequestered for a year\, Claudette and I would record an album at home… Everybody Wants My Hat.  There’s something unique about playing and/or recording at home. At the same time its both lonely and delightful. \n\n\n\nThis recording has given me the opportunity to express the love and joy I feel for my family altogether and my granddaughter\, Lola Simone\, in particular.  These songs express my hopes for the future as well as the concerns so many of us share. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will be continuing its discussion of Scottish-American moral and political philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s book Dependent Rational Animals at its next gathering on July 16. MacIntyre’s treatment of the importance of community – at a level larger than family but smaller than the nation – and his advocacy for “just generosity” in this context will be a particular focus of the July discussion. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe Society’s July 16 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering at 3:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for summer visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society in Portugal\, England\, Arizona\, or wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nDependent Rational Animals was written in 1999. It further develops or revises a number of themes introduced by MacIntyre in his 1981 classic After Virtue. The 1999 work is available for free online here: https://vdocuments.net/alasdair-macintyre-dependent-rational-animals.html?page=1  Chapters 9-11 are the highlighted readings for July. \n\n\n\nThe initial chapters of Dependent Rational Animals raise and explore the questions of why it is important for humans to pay attention to and understand both what we have in common with other intelligent animals\, and what makes “attention to human vulnerability and disability important for moral philosophers.” Beginning in Chapter 9\, MacIntyre explores his contention that developing the virtues of “rational independence” and “acknowledged dependence” require social groups (communities) that differ from either the modern family or the national state. \n\n\n\nIn an attempt to bridge what is often presented as a chasm between Enlightenment individualism and the importance of community\, MacIntyre equates the two: “Note that on this account the good of the individual is not subordinated to the good of the community nor vice versa. The individual\, in order not just to pursue but even to define her or his good in concrete terms has first to recognize the goods of the community as goods that he or she must make her own.” \n\n\n\nMacIntyre then ties this into a virtuous attitude that he calls “just generosity” and which he traces back to Thomas Aquinas. Again\, MacIntyre sees this as a bridge between what are sometimes posed as conflicting obligations – for justice\, i.e. that which is owed; and for generosity\, inspired by sympathy for the suffering of others and also by pursuit of the virtue of doing good. \n\n\n\nMacIntyre is a self-described Aristotelian-Thomist. He is a renowned proponent of virtue ethics\, and of communitarianism\, in contrast to liberal capitalism. Born in Scotland and educated in England\, he taught initially at the UK universities of Leeds\, Manchester and Oxford before moving to the US in 1969. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Notre Dame\, having in addition been on the faculties of Brandeis\, Duke\, Vanderbilt and Boston Universities.

SUMMARY:What Is a Short-Story Cycle\, Why Write One\, and How? With Author Laura Bonazzoli
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, Morgan Talty\, author of Night of the Living Rez\, gave a shout-out to short-story cycles on Maine Public Radio’s Maine Calling\, noting that they’re an increasingly popular genre of fiction. But why? What exactly is a short-story cycle? What are its characteristics? As compared to a traditional short-story collection or novel\, what advantages—and challenges—might it hold for readers? And if you’re intrigued by the possibility of writing one\, how might you begin?  \n\n\n\nJoin Rockport author Laura Bonazzoli to explore this fascinating genre. Laura will also read excerpts from her own short-story cycle\, Consecration Pond\, which was described by Publishers Weekly as poetic and haunting\, “a solid\, meditative collection of interconnected short stories that weave together seemingly disparate narratives into a satisfying and cohesive whole.” Consecration Pond was published by indie press Toad Hall Editions in August 2022\, and is available at local bookstores\, directly from the publisher at toadhalleditions.ink\, and as an e-book for Kindle readers at Amazon.com. Signed copies of Consecration Pond will also be available at the event.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Bonazzoli’s fiction has appeared in numerous publications\, including Evening Street Review\, Exposition Review\, The Sandy River Review\, and many others. She has also published poetry and personal essays in literary magazines and anthologies. After the publication of her short stories “Prayer of the Bell” and “Spring Ice\,” she began working on a collection of linked stories of loss and resilience that all take place on a fictional pond in Maine. That collection became the short-story cycle\, Consecration Pond.

Audience members may bring picnic blankets and beach chairs to the Amphitheatre. Music by the Sea’s opening performance by the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble features faculty members and students performing jazz favorites and original arrangements – a mellow start to an afternoon and evening of fine music. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra (MoJO) brings extraordinary modern and traditional big-band music to life. MoJO is an extraordinary 18-piece Midcoast Maine-based big band. They perform everything from modern and traditional jazz to Latin\, swing\, blues\, and funk. Band members’ love of their music grabs enthusiastic audiences for unforgettable joy rides. MoJO has something for everyone\, from Basie to Ellington and the latest jazz hits. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nGawler Family Band offers fun-loving folk singing and fiddle-playing at festivals\, farms\, concerts\, and schools\, delighting people of all ages. The band’s songs and tunes reflect the spirit of Maine and the Northeast with the sounds of the fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, cello\, and bass\, along with voices in perfect harmony. They share songs old and new\, from work songs and ballads to playful numbers about everyday life\, and their irresistible dance tunes bring listeners irresistibly to their feet. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Right Track is a classic R&B/Soul/Funk band with a full horn section playing all dance music all the time. DESCRIPTION:Learn about durable trail design\, construction\, and maintenance with Camden Hills State Park Trails Supervisor Erik Brooks during this program on Tuesday\, July 2 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nIf you want to build trails on your property or volunteer with an organization that builds or maintains trails\, this is an opportunity to learn principles and techniques for creating enjoyable paths that hold up well against strong storm events and general use. This talk focuses on hand-built trails. \n\n\n\nErik Brooks grew up in Harpswell\, Maine where he first assisted with trail maintenance on the local Cliff Trail and with a family friend on the Appalachian Trail. He worked three summers on the White Mountain Professional Trail Crew during college\, and has volunteered with organizations such as the Maine Appalachian Trail Club for several years.
