SUMMARY:"Capturing the Revolutionary War on Canvas" with Mary Miller

Photo Credit:Brandywine River Museum\n\n\n\nDuring this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Mary Miller for a presentation on the artistic history of the revolutionary war\, on Tuesday\, October 28\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nCharles Willson Peale\, John Singleton Copley\, John Trumbull\, Benjamin West\, and Gilbert Stuart not only were intimately associated with the key players of the Revolution\, but they also captured their portraits and activities on canvas. These artists\, who interacted with the Founders\, contributed to the founding spirit of the country. Through their art\, they color and command our point of view. Whether truth or propaganda\, we will explore their intentions and look closely at some of the forgotten stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Miller’s lifelong enchantment with art history began at the Huntington Library with Thomas Gainsborough. From there\, she pursued the usual degrees from California State Colleges before beginning a teaching life that would take her around the world with her husband. She has been a teacher and presenter of the Arts and Humanities in London\, Vienna\, Lugano\, Charlotte\, and a longtime docent at the National Palace in Taiwan. With her life partner\, she has led art and history trips in Europe and Asia for too many years to mention. She makes her home with pleasure and endless gratitude in Camden\, Maine\, where she writes\, reads\, and gardens.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. He will talk about how to think about air\, moisture and thermal barriers in your home\, and how weatherizing\, insulation and air sealing can improve comfort and yield significant savings while preparing your home for next steps.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition\, Connie Evans from the nonprofit WindowDressers will explain how their inexpensive window inserts can help. \n\n\n\nThose who attend in person can pick up flyers about the many state incentives for home energy upgrades. DESCRIPTION:Join musical instrument creator and Sound Therapists Jim Doble and Maleine Gargurevich on an assortment of gongs\, other instruments\, and vocals for a special sonic experience to celebrate the season. This spooky sound bathing session will take place on Friday\, October 31\, at 6:00 PM in the Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nOn All Hallow’s Eve we will be bathing the Amphitheatere in mystical sound to help transport you on an inner journey. Think of this as sonic meditation\, best experienced in a very relaxed position with closed eyes. We will use Gongs\, Didgeridoo\, Chimes\, Voice\, and other mysterious devices to invite transportation betwixt realms! \n\n\n\nBring something comfy to lay or sit on and plenty of warm layers and blankets to ward off the chill (and ghouls!). Donations greatly appreciated. \n\n\n\n Contact Jim Doble at jim@elementaldesign.me for questions.

SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Time and Place: KIRA and Monhegan" Graphite Drawings by Deb Vendetti
DESCRIPTION:Le Bouche – St. Croix River (French: Fleuve Sainte-Croix; Maliseet-Passamaquoddy: Skutik)\n\n\n\nHope artist Deb Vendetti presents new graphite drawings exploring coastal landscapes of New Brunswick and Maine. They will be on exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery at Camden Public Library during the month of November.* The public is invited to an artist reception on November 22 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.The work spans two transformative summers: a month-long residency at Kingsbrae International Residency for the Arts (KIRA) in St. Andrews\, New Brunswick in 2024\, and self-structured periods on Monhegan Island and in St. Andrews in 2025. For Vendetti\, who has been drawing on Monhegan since the 1980s\, the sustained focus of the KIRA residency marked a significant shift in her practice.The exhibition includes approximately 15+ works—drawings and sketchbook pages—that capture atmospheric conditions\, tidal patterns\, and the particular quality of light in these coastal places. From sweeping views of Navy Island at the mouth of the St. Croix River to intimate midnight studies of Manana Island\, the work reflects decades of careful observation.Vendetti holds a BFA in painting from Southeastern Massachusetts University and graduate studies in photography with Carl Toth at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She served as Education Coordinator at the Farnsworth Art Museum for 11 years and was the videographer in the early years of the Maine Masters project\, documenting seminal Maine artists including Robert Hamilton\, Alan Magee\, Dahlov Ipcar\, Harold Garde\, Emily Nelligan\, Clark Fitzgerald and Ashley Bryan.*The exhibition runs November 2 – 30. The gallery is open during regular library hours; visitors areencouraged to call ahead at 207-236-3440 as the space occasionally hosts events.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Tuesday Morning Book Club: "Story Like the Wind" by Laurens Van der Post
DESCRIPTION:The Tuesday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library on the FIRST Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nFor the month of November\, the group will be reading Story Like the Wind by Laurens Van der Post. If you would like to join a book club session or would like more information\, please email Nora Curry at ncurry@librarycamden.org. New members are always welcome! \n\n\n\nSummary of Story Like the Wind by Laurens Van der Post: This is a story of an almost vanished Africa; a world of myth and magic in which the indigenous peoples of the continent lived for uncountable centuries before the Europeans came to shatter it. The main character is a boy who has a relationship with this Africa not unlike Kipling’s Kim with the antique world of India. François Joubert\, whose Huguenot ancestors settled in Africa three hundred years ago\, lives as a solitary child on his father’s farm\, ‘Hunter’s Drift’. Here\, in the far interior of Africa\, he experiences the wonder and mystery of an ageless\, natural primitive life\, his perception of it heightened by the influence of three people in particular – his Bushman nurse\, the head herdsman of the local Matabele clan (his father’s chosen partners in the pioneering of Hunter’s Drift)\, and a hunter of legendary fame\, now the chief ranger of a vast game reserve nearby.

Q&A to follow. \n\n\n\nIncredible Edible Milbridge (IEM) is a community’s response to the ongoing food challenges\, food security challenges\, inflation and supply chain mishaps. This wildly successful food security project was launched in 2013. These public gardens produce organic vegetables for 30\,000 meals each growing season\, ensuring their neighbors have access to nutritious food. \n\n\n\n\nIncredible Edible Milbridge is part of Women for Healthy Rural Living. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Grant is the Incredible Edible Milbridge Coordinator at Women for Healthy Rural Living. Mark came to Cherryfield in 2013\, seeking to live a simpler life in harmony with the rhythms and patterns of Nature. He has a great love of plants and since moving to Maine has earned his living as a gardener/farmer.

These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur first book will be Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet by Kate Marvel. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. As the author states\, “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.”
