Among these larids are some of the most coveted bird species in the world.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a Zoom with Amar Ayyash where he will highlight key identification field marks for separating our most common gull species\, and he will also touch on some of the often-ignored topics in gull-study such as the aging process and plumage. Learn why an increasing number of people are being drawn to this family of birds and are eagerly calling themselves “larophiles”. \n\n\n\n\nAmar Ayyash is both an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for “gull recreation”. He coordinates the IOS Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan\, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com\, and is often found speaking at birding events throughout the continent. Much of his free time is dedicated to traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. Ayyash has published a number of articles on gull identification\, distribution\, and molt. He is the author of the book\, The Gull Guide. Amar lives in northern Illinois where he teaches mathematics. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: The Unsettling of America
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society on March 18 will continue along the path laid out in our February reading from Robin Wall Kimmerer\, in this case with a reading by agrarian thinker Wendell Berry\, taken from his famed 1970s work The Unsettling of America. Both sessions form part of a series of discussions by the society on capitalism and alternatives to this mode of organizing and living in human society. \n\n\n\nThe March 18 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nAs highlighted in our February discussion\, Kimmerer in Braiding Sweetgrass postulates that the ways in which we relate to the Earth affect how we relate to one another. According to Kimmerer\, we need to enter consciously into a relationship of love — the earth loves us and we love the earth. Such is the basis of the Indigenous “gift” economy\, which stands in such sharp contrast to a profit-oriented capitalist economy. \n\n\n\nLike Kimmerer\, Berry believes that how we relate to the land affects how we relate to one another. He looks at our culture’s relationship to land — exploitive\, destructive\, and indifferent — and reveals the cost we are paying ecologically\, individually\, and culturally. He calls it a disease. Being a farmer and Jeffersonian\, Berry provides a unique view into our culture. One that heavily influenced the ideals and actions of many of the “back-to-the-landers” who flocked to Maine in the 1970s\, around the time The Unsettling of America was first published. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be introduced by back-to-the-lander\, farmer\, and artisan in wood Mike Beaudry. As readings\, Mike selected the first four essays from The Unsettling of America. SUMMARY:Book Talk: "The Shattered Curling Stone" with David Florig
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes author David Florig for a presentation of his novel\, The Shattered Curling Stone\, on Thursday\, Marcy 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the 500-year-old Scottish sport of curling\, or are simply a fan of historical fiction and Scotland\, you won’t want to miss this event. Light refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\nAudience members will learn about the special kind of ice used for curling\, as well as get a chance to see and feel curling equipment\, including a curling stone made from 60-million-year-old Scottish granite. There will be readings from both the award-winning The Stones of Ailsa Craig and The Shattered Curling Stone\, followed by a Q&A and book signing session. \n\n\n\nThe Shattered Curling Stone is a work of historical fiction\, set in late-1800s Scotland and Canada. Rich in the history of women’s curling\, The Shattered Curling Stone tells the story of Ailsa Maclaren\, a young Scottish lass who takes to the ice at twelve years old\, at a time when women were neither expected nor encouraged to play “the Roarin’ Game.” Ailsa’s curling journey takes her to the first women’s bonspiel in Scotland\, the Scottish Women’s Championship\, and the Women’s World Championship in Canada. Along the way\, she meets the charming and very\, very handsome Lucas Plotcok. And therein lies the real tale. \n\n\n\nSteeped in the history of women’s curling\, The Shattered Curling Stone stands among the select few novels centered around the 500-year-old sport of curling. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDavid Florig is a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance\, as well as a member and past-president of the Pine Tree Curling Club in Portland. The Stones of Ailsa Craig is his debut novel and is an homage to Belfast\, Maine; the glorious Maine coast; and the ancient Scottish sport of curling. \n\n\n\nDavid lives in Ocean Park\, Maine with his wife of thirty-five years\, Nancy\, and their ill-mannered rescue dog\, Molly Malone.

SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate Series Tackles Risk Assessment and the Insurance Industry
DESCRIPTION:CamdenCAN and the Camden Public Library\, as part of its continuing Camden Talks Climate\, is proud to present  “How to Instigate Action on Climate Change\,” with Kerry Emanuel\, Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at MIT on Thursday\, March 6\, 6:30 PM in-person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. \n\n\n\nProperty insurance rates are skyrocketing in Camden and nationwide due in large part to catastrophes like wildfires in Los Angeles and hurricanes in Florida that are caused or worsened by climate change.  \n\n\n\nYet the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change continue to rise\, and little is being done to adapt infrastructure to handle the change. Emanuel argues that this inaction and\, even worse\, migration from less risky to more risky places\, are natural consequences of tax and insurance systems that subsidize building and rebuilding in high-risk locations. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist Kelly Desrosiers for her fine art exhibit of collage-based paintings titled Winter into Spring in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of March*. The public is invited to a “Meet the Artist” teatime on Friday\, March 28\, at 3:00 PM in the Picker Room. View the exhibit before it goes away\, chat with the artist\, and enjoy light refreshments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKelly Desrosiers — Artist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“I have spent many years absorbing the experiences and knowledge that I now attempt to express through my art. The earliest years were as a dreamy\, artistic\, bookish\, loner child in the wetlands\, forests\, and flyways of northern Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nThe second phase was exploring the world through jobs and travel: as a psychiatric technician\, truck stop night shift waitress\, migrant farm laborer\, woods worker for the Alaska Forest Service\, fieldworker for researchers studying eagles\, bears\, whales and blueberries\, veterinary surgical technician\, soil mapping\, train-hopping\, cycling and hitch-hiking on this continent and others\, culminating along the way in a degree in Animal & Veterinary Science. \n\n\n\nScience was filling in the gaps in my mystical experience of the natural world\, adding layers of understanding\, grounding my poetic sensibility. A sharp left turn led to teaching art\, an undergraduate degree in art (printmaking)\, Masters and MFA (sculpture)\, and the raising of a family\, along with a small garlic farm in Unity\, my home. I have lived in and created art in Maine for 42 years. Art had claimed me\, in the end\, full circle completed. \n\n\n\nMy acrylic collage-based paintings express the mystical energy of the natural world as I first knew it in childhood\, and are created on cradled wood panels with printed tissue papers that I make myself with original stencils and stamps that I design myself. Multiple layers of transparent collage are combined with acrylic applied by brush\, in glazes\, or by liner pen as a means of drawing with paint. Layers are sanded periodically to “antique” and integrate the layered patterns. \n\n\n\nI view the overlapping of patterns as a proxy for the web of relationships in the natural world\, both visible and invisible\, and from micro to macro. The time-consuming finished works have strong compositions based on Maine landscapes and seascapes (sometimes flora or fauna) but also have layered depth\, hidden visual surprises\, and a unique textured surface. \n\n\n\nI also create watercolor/gouache paintings that are usually landscapes/seascapes but often delve into more abstraction. I mount these paintings on cradled panels and seal them with 7 coats of spray varnish to leave a protected but matte surface. \n\n\n\nMy website can be found at pointedfirsart.com. These stunning beauties also are ideal for over-wintering in containers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kerry Ann MendezKerry Ann Mendez is an award-winning garden educator\, author\, design consultant and proprietor of Perennially Yours based in southern Maine.  She is dedicated to teaching the art of low-maintenance flower gardening and landscaping – featuring time-saving gardening techniques\, workhorse plants and sustainable practices. As an exceptionally popular educator and communicator\, she has presented hundreds of lectures to thousands of gardeners in 23 states.  In 2014 she received the Gold Medal award from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for “Exceptional teaching and writing that increases public enjoyment and appreciation of horticulture.”  Kerry Ann has written four gardening books\, the most recent being The Budget Wise Gardener and The Right-Size Flower Garden. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, February 20\, at 6:30 p.m.\, CamdenCAN\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, will present Belfast filmmaker Jim Merkel’s Saving Walden’s World as part of its free monthly series “Camden Talks Climate.”  \n\n\n\nThe film will be shown in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. The showing will be followed by a Q&A and audience discussion with Merkel and Camden-based permaculture educator Joline Blais. \n\n\n\nThe award-winning film tells a compelling story of how individuals and communities can make a profound impact on the planet. Saving Walden’s World explores the urgent need for ecological balance through inspiring stories of resilience\, sustainability\, and hope in Slovenia\, Cuba\, and Kerala\, India. This thought-provoking film challenges us to rethink our relationship with nature and empowers us to take meaningful action for a healthier\, more harmonious world.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Merkel is a filmmaker\, author\, and educator who moved from military weapons development to rural homesteading. His book Radical Simplicity digs into the details of a globally equitable way of life. Jim worked as Dartmouth College’s Sustainability Coordinator and volunteers with the Sierra Club and other community organizations. He and his partner Susan Cutting and their child Walden live off-the-grid\, growing much of their food\, in a home they built with oaks and pines from their land in Belfast\, Maine. \n\n\n\nThis showing of Saving Walden’s World is free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:The Coffeehouse Concert series in the Picker Room returns on Thursday\, February 13 at 6:00 (SIX O’CLOCK!) p.m. with a solo concert from Pete Kilpatrick! There will be refreshments to accompany this cozy winter evening of indoor music. Free and open to all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaine based singer/songwriter Pete Kilpatrick grew up with a deep and resounding love of melody. With no formal training in music\, Pete picked up the acoustic guitar at the age of 16 and began teaching himself how to play\, crafting his own songs all while falling deeply in love with the process.  \n\n\n\nAfter completing high school\, Pete took a few years off before attending college to focus his energy on a full-time career as a musician. He wrote and recorded his first album\, Half Way Home\, back in 2003. Between networking and a near constant performing schedule throughout New England he began to develop a loyal following that would continue to grow over the years.  \n\n\n\nPete Kilpatrick has been named Maine’s best act four times in the Portland Best Music Awards and has performed over 1\,600 shows. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will continue its exploration of existing and alternative societal and economic structures at its next hybrid gathering on Tuesday\, February 18\, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. EDT in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nFor our February topic\, we are moving from the socio-political constructs of Karl Marx and the socio-religious framework of Martin Buber to the “braided” relationship between ourselves and the land\, using the work of contemporary botanist and writer Robin Wall Kimmerer in Braiding Sweetgrass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will explore themes from Kimmerer’s book that reflect the “gift economy\,” as differentiated from “commodity exchange.”  In this way her writings encourage us to re-examine our idea of a “gift” and our exchanges among each other. How does the spirit in which an object is given to another enhance the richness and worth between the giver and the receiver? \n\n\n\nEssayist and author of The Gift Lewis Hyde writes: “It is the cardinal difference between gift and commodity exchange that a gift establishes a feeling-bond between two people.”  These observations are extended in Kimmerer’s philosophy of the human species in relationship to land — the give and take of that relationship that Kimmerer calls “the equations of reciprocity and responsibility\, the whys and wherefores of building sustainable relationships with ecosystems.” \n\n\n\nThe Society’s meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month\, in this case Feb. 18. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please let us know by return email (Reply All). Over 4000 species of bees inhabit North America\, and most don’t live in hives or make honey. In fact\, wild bees come in every size\, shape\, and color you can imagine\, and they live all around us\, hiding in plain sight. In this lecture\, Dr. Nick Dorian will introduce you to the wild bees of New England. Together\, we’ll examine their varied lifestyles\, habitat needs\, and intricate relationships they have with native flowering plants and other insects. You’ll come away clear action items for how to notice\, appreciate\, and help these important pollinators in your backyard. \n\n\n\nDr. Nick Dorian is an ecologist\, an educator\, and a naturalist. He received his Ph.D. from Tufts University where he studied the ecology and conservation of wild bees. At Tufts\, Nick also co-founded and ran the Tufts Pollinator Initiative (sites.tufts.edu/pollinators)\, which worked to build capacity for community-based pollinator conservation through habitat creation\, place-based education\, and ecological research. Currently\, Nick is a post-doctoral researcher at the Chicago Botanic Garden where he studies how to optimize pollinator gardens for biodiversity conservation. \n\n\n\n\nLeaf-cutter bees (Megachile spp.) collect pollen in special hairs under their abdomens\n\n\n\nUnequal cellophane bees (Colletes inaequalis) are common in early spring across eastern North America where they build nests underground in sandy soils.\n\n\n\nBicolored striped sweat bees (Agapostemon virescens) can be easily seen on purple coneflowers in backyards and gardens in summer months.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Garden Club is a the oldest garden club in Maine. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Professor Carter Jones Meyer for her talk\, “Democracy and Native America: Indigenous Voices from the Front”. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place on Sunday\, February 9 at 3:00 PM in-person ONLY at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe Indians Giving a Talk to Colonel Bouquet… in Oct. 1764. Library of Congress.\n\n\n\nThe theme of the 2025 Camden Conference focuses on threats to democracy around the world. But what about in the U.S.? Can democracy itself become a threat\, especially to the way of life of indigenous peoples? \n\n\n\nSince the nation’s inception\, Native Americans have had their lands\, their cultures\, and their sovereignty threatened by a U.S. Government seeking to impose its own ideas of liberty\, equality\, and justice\, principles that were often already deeply imbedded in Native cultures and governance. The paradoxes that emerged through these encounters are undeniable\, and have not been lost on Natives themselves\, who have continually reminded the Government of that fact. \n\n\n\n“Democracy and Native America: Indigenous Voices from the Front” will explore some of these paradoxes in U.S. history through the voices of Native leaders who have been on the front lines in protecting their way of life from “democratic” incursions. In the process\, they have often drawn from indigenous knowledge to point out the shortcomings of American democratic principles as well as to suggest ways by which a more vital\, inclusive democracy can be realized. \n\n\n\n\nCarter Jones Meyer\, Professor Emerita of History at Ramapo College of New Jersey\, most recently taught Native American history at the University of Southern Maine. Her research and teaching have focused on late nineteenth and early twentieth century American cultural history\, with a specialty in the history of the American West and Native history.  \n\n\n\nHer scholarly papers have been presented before such leading professional organizations as the American Historical Association\, The American Studies Association\, and the Western History Association. Among her publications is the seminal Selling the Indian: Commercializing and Appropriating American Indian Cultures. She holds the B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College\, and the A.M. and Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University.

Refreshments and activities for families will be provided. \n\n\n\nCamden was awarded its third Community Resilience Partnership Community Action Grant by the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future (GOPIF) over a year ago to help fund resilience planning for Camden’s Inner Harbor as well as a Shore and Harbor Planning Grant from the Maine Coastal Program. \n\n\n\nPrior to this event\, the consultant team has conducted site assessment\, mapped flood vulnerability\, hosted the first community-wide engagement event and organized three stakeholder meetings with CamdenCAN/Municipal Staff/Business Owners. Now we want to welcome everyone to review preliminary resilience strategies and lend your thoughts on the planning progress. \n\n\n\nIn this session Blake Sanborn\, Todd Richardson and Todd Coffin\, from Richardson & Associates/WSP\, will share results of the community survey and two preliminary draft alternatives developed from the input gathered to date. Participants will be asked to comment on the drafts and offer suggestions for improvement that will inform a preferred alternative and final set of recommendations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening is being presented by CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources.
