After 16 years of service at the Camden Public Library\, it’s time for my library colleagues to take it from here.  \n\n\n\nIt has truly been my honor to both lead and contribute to the tremendous work that the library does on behalf of the greater Camden community. To be able to bring this library firmly into the digital age\, and help sustain one of Maine’s busiest and best\, has brought me a great deal of personal satisfaction. Thank you for the opportunity to guide this very special library through these many years – and through the best and worst of times. Join us for a journey in listening to wildlife audio recordings from Acadia and beyond\, and the stories of adventure and discovery behind them.  \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual presentation on Zoom. In 2017\, she established “Schoodic Notes: Bird Sounds of Acadia\,” a collaborative project with Schoodic Institute’s Bird Ecology program. Along with the help of a few other natural sound recordists\, the project has archived over 1200 recordings of Acadia’s birds. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Murray Carpenter\, Maine Public\n\n\n\nLaura is also a seasoned educator and wildlife technician. She has long sought opportunities to empower others to develop their knowledge\, skills\, and experience to understand\, connect with\, and serve the natural world. She holds a Master of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA. She created and ran natural and cultural history programs for adults and families through University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center\, the National Park Service\, and many other organizations. She has also conducted track surveys of Canada Lynx via snowmobile\, and howling surveys in search of Gray Wolf\, in Maine’s North Woods. Partially retired these days\, she spends most of her free time exploring the natural world\, and especially recording natural sounds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus\, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective\, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared.

DESCRIPTION:Join Penobscot Marine Museum Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for an illustrated talk on Tuesday\, April 16\, at 6:30 PM\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent.” The presentation will explore Moore’s life and work as a denizen of Midcoast Maine. This event is presented in conjunction with the “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent” exhibit from the Penobscot Marine Museum in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of April.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cwRpzItIRVClMP2JZwakCg \n\n\n\nSteel “boom jumper” No. 35 being launched by crane for sea trials on April 18\, 1952 at Rockland’s General Foods Shipyard.  Photo by Jim Moore\n\n\n\nAs a child\, Jim Moore had the opportunity to visit a noted news photographer’s darkroom\, which sparked a lifelong interest in cameras and photography. In 1940\, he moved to Rockland with his new bride\, Cecile\, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office\, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career\, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist\, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001.  The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: John Dewey - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Famed early 20th Century philosopher John Dewey will provide grist for the discussion mill at the April 16 gathering of the Camden Philosophical Society. Like other ancient-to-contemporary thinkers whose ideas the society has discussed in recent months\, Dewey saw philosophy as a way of living and interacting with the world\, not merely as an academic pursuit. The hybrid gathering will be at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, April 16. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom.  \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nDewey spent the first half of the last century as the United States’ pre-eminent public philosopher\, writing on educational theory\, aesthetics\, human nature\, politics and culture\, and other topics. Born in Vermont in 1859\, he died in New York City in 1952 — so his life spanned horse-drawn carriages to jet airplanes\, muskets to hydrogen bombs. His obituary was on the front page of the New York Times. \n\n\n\nKnown as a pragmatist\, Dewey took human lived experience (described as meaningful transactions with the world) as the basis of his philosophy. In political philosophy\, he was a strong advocate for democracy\, including reforming our educational system to solicit individual traits for working in community. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy has proposed readings from Dewey’s 1927 book The Public and Its Problems: An Essay in Political Enquiry. Specifically\, Greg suggests participants read Chapter 4\, “The Eclipse of the Public”; and Chapter 5\, “The Search fo Camden Philosophical Society reading and discussion group for April 16zzzzr the Great Community” ahead of the discussion.  These two chapters\, published nearly 100 years ago\, cover the challenges of realizing a democratic community in the United States.   \n\n\n\nThe book can be accessed online for free here via Project Gutenberg: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71000Or here via The Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.190550/mode/2up \n\n\n\nBoth provide for downloads in multiple formats.

In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press\, 2020) by Tom Verde recounts the colorful stories of nearly forty classic/unique New England vessels. These include the fabled history of the cat boat; the first fiberglass sailing yacht; a NY ferry boat repurposed as a houseboat; the oldest working fishing boat in Stonington\, CT; racing rivalries in the Sound; the French love affair with American boat designs; and the Jazz Age era of luxury yachting\, among others. In his presentation\, Verde will discuss several boats featured in his book\, including their classes and designers\, as well as their relationships to the waters in which they sailed\, raced\, cruised. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Verde is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times\, Yankee Magazine\, and on National Public Radio. He is the author of Maine Ghosts and Legends: 30 Encounters with the Supernatural (Down East Books) and In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press). A partial solar eclipse will be visible in Camden (weather permitting) from 2:10 – 4:40 p.m.\, with the peak from 3:28 – 3:35 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhile this event won’t plunge Camden into complete darkness\, it promises a sight to behold as the moon partially obscures the sun and shifts the cast of the light around us. The openness of Harbor Park is a great place to view from. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSolar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth\, casting a shadow on our planet. During a partial eclipse\, only a portion of the sun is obscured\, but it still creates an awe-inspiring spectacle. \n\n\n\nYou can also drive a couple hours north to experience the drama of totality. DESCRIPTION:The exhibit “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent” from the Penobscot Marine Museum will be on view in the Picker Room Gallery at the Camden Public Library during Maritime Month this April.* \n\n\n\nJoin PMM Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for an illustrated talk at Camden Library on Tuesday\, April 16\, at 6:30 PM. The presentation will explore Moore’s life and work as a denizen of Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nSteel “boom jumper” No. 35 being launched by crane for sea trials on April 18\, 1952 at Rockland’s General Foods Shipyard.  Photo by Jim Moore\n\n\n\nAs a child\, Jim Moore had the opportunity to visit a noted news photographer’s darkroom\, which sparked a lifelong interest in cameras and photography. In 1940\, he moved to Rockland with his new bride\, Cecile\, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office\, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career\, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist\, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001.  The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. (NH 48621\, Naval History and Heritage Command)\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is kicking off Maritime Month a few days early to welcome historian Charles Lagerbom for his talk about the USS Maine on Tuesday\, March 26\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. This event is part of the 2024 Speaker Series put on in partnership with the Camden-Rockport Historical Society\, as well as a part of our Maritime Month program series. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. He organized surveys of ship remains in Maine lakes\, the 1779 Penobscot Expedition and the 17th century English galleon Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid. Two field seasons were spent in Antarctica with University of Maine Quaternary Institute\, now Climate Change Institute. He is author of Whaling in Maine and Maine to Cape Horn: The Most Dangerous Journey and writes a maritime column entitled Half Seas Over for the local newspaper Village Soup. In addition to AP US History\, Charles teaches New England Maritime History and co-teaches the Marine Studies Class as part of the Belfast Marine Institute while also frequently speaking on Antarctica\, Cape Horn\, Maine whaling and New England colonial and maritime history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown\, living in the house she grew up in\, and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. When Lily Campanello and her mom relocate to Adams\, New Hampshire\, for her final year of high school\, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while\, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school\, and Lily can’t help but fall for him\, too. Then one day\, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead\, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique event presented in partnership with the Camden Public Library and the Camden Conference\, featuring Les Fossel\, Jr.\, as he shares the remarkable story of his parents’ involvements in America’s first spy agencies during World War II. This event will take place on SUNDAY\, March 24\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was the CIA there was the OSS\, and before the OSS there was the COI – the Coordinator of Information\, established under President Franklin Roosevelt as the first American spy agency in WWII – and Les Fossel\, Sr. was present at the creation. He was one of the first ten members of the new agency that would morph into the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. Fossel ran the Scandinavian operations of the OSS and was awarded the King Haakon Freedom Cross by the king of Norway after the war. Meanwhile his wife-to-be\, Virginia Van Brunt\, smuggled the first photos of Nazi concentration camps out of Germany. \n\n\n\n“My parents ran towards trouble\,” said Les Fossel\, Jr. who will tell his parents’ stories in what promises to be a fascinating afternoon at the Camden Public Library in the Picker Room on Sunday\, March 24 at 2:00 pm.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person at the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. Join us in person to participate in the full discussion. Fossel served in the fledgling OSS under General William “Wild Bill” Donovan; may have conducted secret negotiations with high-ranking Nazi officials over an early peace deal; and apparently knew how close the Nazi regime came to developing the first atom bomb. \n\n\n\nFossel hopes that his talk will attract people who might be able to flesh out his father’s story through discussion\, questions\, and curiosities that may further connect the dots. Camden has been a favorite retirement community for former State Department and CIA employees\, some of whom organized the first Camden Conference in 1987. For over thirty years she worked in nonprofits as a counselor\, public speaker and grant writer. \n\n\n\nWith funding from the State of Maine\, she developed Storytelling with Heart\, a curriculum for professionals to create and use stories in their work with clients and/or communities. She traveled nationally with her curriculum\, developed a CD and published several articles on storytelling.     \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, she received an award from the National Storytelling Association for her contribution to the field of therapeutic storytelling. \n\n\n\nMargaret’s love for the Tarot grew out of her love for stories and undeniable curiosity in all things mystical. In 1982\, she began her studies with Rachel Pollock\, Mary Greer and Caitlin and John Matthews. She continues to be part of a peer support group of Tarot readers and offers readings to those who wish to be guided by the intuitive power of the cards.  \n\n\n\n At the age of nineteen\, Margaret began her travels abroad in search of her Welsh grandmother’s birthplace. That journey ignited her desire to visit sacred sites and encouraged her to search for stories that lay in the landscape. She now leads small groups on guided tours to sacred sites and shares the stories of the region. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, Margaret performs\, writes travel essays\, and continues her research on mythic stories.

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Costica Bradatan's "Dying for Ideas" - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its exploration of philosophy as “an art of living\,” the Camden Philosophical Society will at this month’s regularly scheduled hybrid gathering — at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, March 19 — discuss portions of the 2015 book Dying for Ideas: The Dangerous Lives of the Philosophers\, by Costica Bradatan. All are welcome to participate\, either in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemporary philosopher Costica Bradatan\, a native of Romania\, is currently a Professor of Philosophy at Texas Tech University. The work that we are reading addresses the complex nature of the relation of philosophy (and philosophers) to death. As he discusses in the book\, many philosophers have died for ideas\, from Socrates to Czech phenomenologist Jan Patocke\, who died in 1977 after being interrogated by the Czech secret police about his involvement in the Chapter 77 human rights movement. Simone Weil\, whose work the society discussed last year\, is another example. Bradatan also points out that philosophers have developed ideas about the meaning of death. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy\, who selected the reading\, notes: “In a culture that appears to be allergic to talking about death\, it might be helpful to understand different philosophical approaches to death as part of an overall practical philosophy\, as part of living an examined life.” The reading proposed by Greg is the first 57 pages of Dying for Ideas. A link to an online version of the PDF is below: \n\n\n\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/13j1SWSJeqoN5DWwDTvmR9GmEZy1HwzDG/view

SUMMARY:Healing Handwork: "Drawing Messy Mandalas" with Robinsunne
DESCRIPTION:What needs to be healed? Our bodies? Our jobs? Our homes? Our psyches? Our relationships? Our experiences of joy? \n\n\n\nYou are invited to join an art class wherein we make mandalas – beautiful\, meditative circles – to engage our hands while our souls and minds listen patiently for the answers we seek. It is remarkable how this all works together. The introductory session\, which focuses on drawing mandalas\, will take place on Saturday\, March 16\, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM in the Picker Room. It is free and open to adults. While there\, if you want to go a little deeper\, you can sign up for the series of Embroidery gatherings. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but spots are limited. We get taught to ignore the “magic” of being a human. We get chastised\, or worse\, punished for spending time in our imaginations. And then we get sick\, or stuck in uncomfortable situations where we don’t have the space to enact our Gifts\, and have no discernable path back to our True hearts.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt making is the path. (Well\, it is a path.) \n\n\n\nDrawing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nThis first class is easy. Perfection is not necessary. If you can draw little circles and triangles\, or even dots and dashes\, you can create wonder-full mandala pictures. The process will calm us down\, and engage all that magical human brain stuff that will lead us to where we really want to go. It is automatic. (!) \n\n\n\nSewing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nIn subsequent classes\, we will each embroider a mandala. If you can sew a running stitch\, that is enough. If you are a well-practiced embroideress this will be awesome fun. Sewing is where it all gets fabulous. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRobinsunne is a local mixed-media fiber artist. She has taught at the Library during some Jumpstart Januarys\, and exhibited in the past two Accordion Book Shows hosted by Amy Hand. She also contributes to and trades with the Artist Trading Card box at the front desk.

This event will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom on Tuesday\, March 5\, at 6:30 PM. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Maine is home to 9 species of snakes\, from the small and secretive ring-necked snake to the (relatively) large and easily observed northern water snake. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife keeps track of all Maine snake species and is actively studying populations of Maine’s largest and rarest snake\, the State Endangered northern black racer. \n\n\n\n\nDerek Yorks\, M.S.\, Wildlife Biologist – Derek serves as the Department’s lead biologist on reptile and amphibian issues\, where he coordinates research and conservation efforts on several priority rare species.  Derek is currently focused on assessing the distribution\, status\, and management needs of black racers\, Blanding’s\, spotted\, and wood turtles in Maine\, coordinating Maine’s efforts with that of several working groups in the Northeast on these species.  Derek is also studying and guiding mitigation recommendations for the impacts of roadways on Maine’s reptiles and amphibians. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Center for Wildlife Studies is to provide accessible environmental education worldwide and promote wildlife conservation through science. \n\n\n\nLearn more about CWS by visiting their website: centerforwildlifestudies.org \n\n\n\nLearn more about the “Wild Maine” series here: centerforwildlifestudies.org/wild-maine
