SUMMARY:"Water is My Inspiration" Photography & Artist Book Exploration with Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:Sue Michlovitz will discuss the genesis of and reasoning behind her photographs made in the natural world. Both water and trees are characters in her work and act as her inspirations. Demonstrations of her images will be through projection and sample prints. Attendees can expect some interactive parts during the evening. She also will talk about and show her 2023 fine artist book Breathe in Water. \n\n\n\nThis book is held in the Hirsch Library of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and in the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections (Deluxe Edition). A review of Breathe in Water by Tim Anderson of Shadow & Light Magazine stated: “This is not simply a book\, it is a singular piece of art” \n\n\n\nSue will end the evening presentation with a book signing. 10% of sales will be donated to the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz is a Camden based visual artist\, engaged in photography\, artist books and mixed media. She is inspired by sights that may go unseen and subjects found in nature that have both components of realism and abstraction. \n\n\n\nShe has shown her art through the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Photoville (Winchester\, MA)\, Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME)\,  The Parsonage Gallery (Searsport\, ME)\,  Michael Good Gallery\, Rockport Public Library\, and Zoot Coffee.  Her work has also been been in exhibitions in Portland\, ME at the Maine Jewish Museum\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and Cove Street Arts. \n\n\n\nShe immersed into the studies of photography and book arts following a 45+year career as a physical therapy clinician and professor. Michlovitz holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Hahnemann University (now Drexel)\, Philadelphia\, PA and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Maine Media College. DESCRIPTION:Amy Thomas\, Restoration Ecologist\, Wild Ones Midcoast Maine Program Chair\, MSW\, MNRD\, will present  “Ecological Principles to Create Aesthetically Beautiful Wildlife Habitat Using Native Plants – No Matter Your Garden Size” in the Picker Room on Thursday\, September 5\, at 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll begin with a brief overview of the ecological and environmental benefits and importance of using native plants in landscapes and gardens. This presentation is geared to any size yard or property\, urban or rural.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore the differences between “cultivars\,” “nativars” and “true native” plants\, and each of their possible potential impacts on pollinators and wildlife.   \n\n\n\n\n\nNext we’ll identify some basic alternative native species which make transitioning portions of your garden to natives easy. The native species in this section have been selected for their visual characteristics\, bloom time\, and foliage shapes often seen in locally used cultivars\, but possess pollinator and wildlife enhancing qualities cultivars lack. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss local nursery sources for safely grown\, genetically diverse native plants\, and have some time for Q&A.

Smith will present a selection of works on paper in various media to include watercolor\, pastel\, and gouache. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to the exhibit’s opening reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 7\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nDouglas Smith attended the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver\, CO\, and the Lyme Academy of Fine Art\, Old Lyme\, CT\, where he studied portrait painting and received the first Stobart Foundation Scholarship for outdoor painting. Smith moved to Maine in 2004. He has travelled and painted on location in Europe\, Mexico\, Russia\, and Alaska. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:Join the Camden Herald’s editorial staff in a trip through nearly two centuries of newspaper history on Tuesday\, September 10\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the evolution of the Camden Herald (est. 1869) over the decades and review notable issues and stories over the years. The program will conclude with a participatory discussion about how news and information are distributed today and our hopes for the future of news in the 21st century.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Dunkle started working as a journalist in the Midcoast in 1998 as a cub reporter at The Courier-Gazette. He serves as executive editor of The Courier-Gazette\, Camden Herald\, The Republican Journal and The Free Press\, covering Knox County with a focus on Camden and Rockland. In addition to news stories\, he has written humor columns\, movie reviews\, short stories and novels. \n\n\n\nDrew Himmelstein is the community engagement and solutions journalism editor for the Camden Herald\, where she dreams up innovative ways to encourage civic dialogue and reports on how we can improve some of the most pressing problems in our community.

The author shares herjourney\, emphasizing spontaneous decision-making and the creation of dynamic learning environments. \n\n\n\nHighlighting the Magic Formula for class satisfaction and the role of games in solving problems\, this guide inspires educators\, parents\, and learners to embrace an educational approach that fosters creativity and individual expression. It presents practical advice on designing curriculums that respond to students’ queries and passions\, making every learning experience enriching and tailored. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLaurie Block Spigel homeschooled her two sons in New York City\, where she created the website HomeschoolNYC.com and taught popular classes to homeschoolers. Laurie has lectured at alternative education conferences\, written articles and published the HomeschoolNYC newsletter. Her book\, Education Uncensored: A Guide for the Aspiring\, the Foolhardy and the Disillusioned (2006)\, part memoir and part homeschooling guide\, explains what’s wrong with America’s educational system. Laurie lives with her husband and cat in Maine not far from her younger son and daughter-in-law\, where she writes\, teaches\, and advocates for homeschooling and game-based\, personalized education.

DESCRIPTION:Do robots with high-level Artificial Intelligence have “moral standing\,” and what does it mean in terms of rights and responsibilities if they do? These are questions the Camden Philosophical Society will explore at its Tuesday\, Sep. 17 session – the second in its series of deep dives into ethical and philosophical issues raised by the development of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). \n\n\n\nThe Society’s Sep. 17 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nReadings\n\n\n\nThe gathering will start with viewing of a portion of an episode from the television series Star Trek: Next Generation\, in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard argues before a tribunal that the robot known as Data has moral standing and should not be dismantled\, as a scientist is proposing to do. DESCRIPTION:Now there’s yoga at the library all year long! Denyse Robinson leads an all-levels yoga flow class on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Picker Room. Bring your own mat if you have one\, although Denyse will have a few extras as well as blocks and straps. \n\n\n\nWe begin each class with breathwork\, meditation\, and setting the intention to connect with our higher selves\, the Earth and one another. \n\n\n\nWe typically commence the flow with some sun salutations\, and then move to standing poses\, balance poses\, and then seated poses into final relaxation. This Flow class is linked with the breath so that each movement corresponds with an inhale and an exhale and is a new and varied sequence of yoga poses each class.

Courtesy of Peter Roberts.\n\n\n\nJoin us for the first program of Discovery History Month on Tuesday\, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room featuring Maine State Archivist Kate McBrien. \n\n\n\nIn 1912\, the State of Maine evicted a community of African American and white residents from their homes on Malaga Island. Racism\, economic struggles\, and eugenics all led to the devastation of this community.  \n\n\n\nThe program will explore the history behind this story that was hidden for so many years.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nKate McBrien serves as the Maine State Archivist\, overseeing the archival preservation and management of state records at the Maine State Archives in Augusta. Before this role\, Kate worked at the Maine Historical Society and Maine State Museum in their curatorial and public engagement departments. DESCRIPTION:Falmouth Hurricane\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, October 3\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. \n\n\n\nDr. Kerry Emanuel\, emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, will present on the long and interesting history of hurricanes that have affected Maine. Emanuel will also talk about recent scientific advances that show us how hurricane risk is changing in midcoast Maine\, as well as destructive winter storms that have plagued us in recent times. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place both in-person and on Zoom. SUMMARY:Philosophical Society: A.I. and the Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:What will the future of “work” look like? What part does work play in our psychological well being? What constitutes meaningful work? These are some of the questions the Camden Philosophical Society will address on Oct. 15\, at the third session in a series of discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The group discussed generative AI in August and September\, focusing on the technology itself\, the ethics and the philosophical quandaries this new technology raises. \n\n\n\nThe October session will highlight the impacts on work. Each of the articles for this session puts forward a different view on this topic and\, together\, they encourage us to take a step back from the “technology” itself and instead explore our own concepts of work and its meaning in a rapidly changing technological society.   \n\n\n\nThe Society’s meeting on Tuesday\, Oct. 15\, will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Arendt frames our discussion by questioning how the advancement of technology will impact our relationship to work and potentially to each other. Overall\, she asks us to “think about what we are doing” as our world and the choices we must make become increasingly complex.  \n\n\n\nOur next reading takes a closer look at what makes work meaningful. Their work will be based on current and projected sea-level rise and storm surge data. \n\n\n\nThis Oct. 15 event is the first of a fall/winter series of public meetings/workshops. This session is intended to provide background on the project\, preliminary site analysis\, and an outline for the community-based planning process. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes CHSP Trails Supervisor Erik Brooks\, along with a history panel\, for an evening about the history of our beloved Camden Hills State Park on Tuesday\, October 22\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. Hear about the old roads\, the Civilian Conservation Corps\, the ski trails\, the horse rental era\, construction of the multi-use\, other changes to the system\, and our current focus. \n\n\n\nErik Brooks will lead a discussion of trail history from pre-park days to more recent times with a panel of other Camden Hills State Park experts. \n\n\n\nCome to learn\, or join in the discussion! If you have lived here awhile and frequented or worked in the park through some of its changes\, we’d love your participation and insights! Come to swap stories or just to listen.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrails Supervisor Erik Brooks is enthusiastic about trail improvements but values understanding a trail’s history. From Harpswell\, Maine\, he visited the park occasionally in his youth\, but relies on Camden Herald digitized archives and the stories of older locals to learn about his workplace. Between the two sources he has found some intriguing stories and characters. Free and open to all. \n\n\n\nFresh off their 2023 win at the Thomas Point Bluegrass Festival band competition\, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are shaking up the bluegrass world with their fresh take on traditional music. Led by John Lennon Award-winning songwriter Sumner\, the string band’s dynamic sound showcases bold chord progressions\, unforgettable stories\, and mesmerizing musicianship from fiddler Kat Wallace and bassist Mike Siegel. With their grassy roots\, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light create a sound that’s both timeless and utterly unique\, captivating audiences with every note they play. \n\n\n\n\nThough Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds\, this is true-blue singer-songwriter folk through and through\, too: achingly clear\, and wide open to the world\, with twang and tenderness enough to carry us through the fire of an unusually difficult year.\n\n\n\n– Cover Lay Down\n\n\n\n\nWith songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice\, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions\, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass). \n\n\n\nSumner is no stranger to the stage.
