DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes poet\, professor\, and translator Sandra Lynn Hutchinson to share her recently published translation of A Tale of Love: More Prison Poems by Baháʼí prisoner of conscience Mahvash Sabet. This program will take place on Tuesday\, June 16 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nWhat is a life of courage? The prison poems of Mahvash Sabet answer this question… \n\n\n\n“My pen’s broken/ and it’s not in my hand./ They took my voice/as a spoil of oppression…”  — so PEN Pinter Writer of Courage and longtime prisoner of conscience Mahvash Sabet wrote from the depths of Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. What does it take to survive a twenty-year-long prison sentence as a poet who is a member of a persecuted minority? How do you write when you have no pen or paper? Come and listen to Mahvash’s Sabet’s testimony about a life of letters lived against all odds\, as set down in her second book of prison poems\, A Tale of Love\, translated from Persian to English by Dr. Sandra Lynn Hutchison of Orono and Shahin Mowzoon\, with an introduction by the 2023 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize\, Narges Mohammadi. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP below to save your seat! \n\n\n\nHutchinson writes in her introduction: “It is hard to imagine a more consequential body of poetry than that which a skilled craftsperson might produce from within the confines of a prison cell. And\, without doubt\, the poems of Mahvash Sabet speak more powerfully than any other form of advocacy could ever hope to of the anguish suffered as well as the victories won in the course of an unjust imprisonment.” \n\n\n\n\n\nFill out my LGL Form!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHutchinson continues: “In A Tale of Love\, her second volume of poems\, Mahvash Sabet\, a Baháʼí imprisoned for practicing her faith in the Islamic Republic of Iran\, bears witness to the horrors and hard-won triumphs of life in an Iranian prison\, where she has been forced to work out her own salvation in the most solitary way: by setting down her thoughts and experiences in poetry. \n\n\n\n“Readers with the courage to enter the world of Sabet’s prison cell… will be amply rewarded by the powerful testimony her poems give of the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra Lynn Hutchison is the author of a books of poetry\, as well as numerous essays and articles. Her translation\, with Shahin Mowzoon\, of Mahvash Sabet’s second volume of prison poems\, A Tale of Love\, was published in 2024. \n\n\n\nHutchison holds a Ph.D. in English literature\, with a specialization in modern poetry\, from the University of Toronto. She has taught at universities in Canada\, Hong Kong\, China\, India\, and the United States\, most recently at the University of Maine.  \n\n\n\nHutchison has been the recipient of various academic recognitions and literary awards\, including a Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship\, an Emily Dickinson Poetry Award\, and a Jane Kenyon Poetry Fellowship from Bennington College. She lives in Orono\, Maine\, where she teaches scriptural exegesis and mentors writers in courses she offers through the Wilmette Institute. She also serves as faculty for the BIHE (Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education)\, an online university in which she teaches journalism and storytelling to Bahá’í youth who are banned from attending public universities in Iran. She is the founder and editor of elixir-journal.org\, an online journal of the arts.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:The Truth About Rodenticides: Expert Panel and Community Q&A\, In Partnership with Wild Ones Midcoast Maine
DESCRIPTION:Download the recording of this event\n\n\n\n\nRodenticide usage for pest control is becoming rampant and has devastating impacts on wildlife. Instead of solving the problem\, these poisons are killing wildlife including rodents’ natural predators\, as well as pets. Rodents who eat rodenticides from bait boxes are then consumed by predators\, who are poisoned in turn. Homeowners may not even know that their own pest management systems uses rodenticides and are contributing to what has been called “the new DDT.” This begs the urgent question: are rodenticides causing the next Silent Spring? \n\n\n\nWild Ones Midcoast Maine and Camden Public Library are partnering to present “The Truth About Rodenticides\,” a community event featuring a panel of experts from around the state who will educate us about rodenticides from their unique perspectives. We will also learn about effective methods of Integrated Pest Management that don’t use these dangerous poisons. Pest management experts will display rodenticide-free rodent control options including snap trap boxes and the Smart Home Defense system\, a data driven rodent control technology. \n\n\n\nFollowing brief presentations by each panel member\, we will open up the room to Q&A and discussion. The goal of the evening is to spread awareness of this crisis\, get up to date on related legislation\, learn about alternatives\, ask questions\, share dialogue\, and take a concrete step towards protecting our wildlife. Everyone is welcome. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRodenticides that target rodents are actually devastating our native wildlife\, including the very animals that naturally control rodent populations.\n\n\n\nExperts on our panel will include: \n\n\n\nThis unassuming “bait box” will have terrible consequences down the food chain. However\, the reality of the bill (LD 356) is more complex. DESCRIPTION:Expectant and nursing parents are encouraged to join a community nursing circle in the Children’s Room of the Camden Library every 4th Wednesday from 4:30p to 5:30pm. The group welcomes families of all stripes and nurslings of all ages. Come with your nursing-related questions\, concerns or curiosities\, or come simply to commune.  \n\n\n\nThe gathering will be facilitated by Lulu Churchill (CLC) with input about library resources from children’s librarian Amy Hand. Lulu Churchill completed her certification in Lactation Management through the Center for Breastfeeding at the Healthy Children Project.
