The two threads gradually converge for the reader in a satisfying dénouement. \n\n\n\nIn 1921\, Opaline Carlisle is in London and is being pushed into an arranged marriage by her domineering mother and brother\, Lyndon\, a veteran officer wounded in the First World War. \n\n\n\nAn independently minded young woman who cherishes freedom and adventure\, she flees to France\, rather than agree to marry\, and finds work at a bookshop\, Shakespeare and Company\, where she learns about the art of dealing in rare books and meets famous literary characters\, including the novelists James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, in contemporary Ireland\, Martha flees to Dublin to escape her own troubled past\, and finds work as a live-in housekeeper with an elderly lady\, Madame Bowden. \n\n\n\nHenry\, a scholar\, desperately in search of a possible unpublished second novel by Emily Brontë and for a lost bookshop\, which play key roles in an academic study for which he’s received funding\, also arrives in Dublin around this time. \n\n\n\nBy accidental fate or destiny he meets Martha while exploring next door at the site where he believes the lost bookshop should be located but mysteriously is not. \n\n\n\nAfter being found and committed to Connacht District Lunatic Asylum at her brother’s behest\, Opaline finally escapes and flees yet again to Dublin and sets up a bookshop there\, still hiding from her brother under the assumed name\, Miss Gray. \n\n\n\nHaving apparently disappeared from historical records makes it difficult for Henry and Martha to track her down as they try to piece together her story. \n\n\n\nAlthough the characters themselves are oblivious to the links that connect them\, slowly but surely the threads come together. In the words of the author\, “a few flipped their lids\, but most of them just raised hell\, in a variety of ways and degrees.” \n\n\n\nM.A.S.H. units\, according to one doctor assigned to the unit\, “weren’t on the front lines\, but they were close. They lived and worked in tents. It was hot in the summer and colder than cold in the winter.” The operating room consisted of stretchers balanced on carpenters’ sawhorses. \n\n\n\nMany of the M.A.S.H. doctors were in their 20s\, many with little advanced surgical training. During battle campaigns\, units could see “as many as 1\,000 casualties a day.” \n\n\n\nFor fans of the movie and the series alike\, here is the original version of that perfectly corrupt football game\, those martini-laced mornings and sexual escapades\, and that unforgettable foray into assisted if incompleted suicide—all as funny and poignant now as they were before they became a part of America’s culture and heart. \n\n\n\nRichard Hooker is the pen name of former military surgeon H. Richard Hornberger. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs part of an effort to expand our own attention to philosophy from the rest of the world\, we turn to Souleymane Diagne’s The Ink of the Scholars. Diagne is a Senegalese philosopher who teaches at Columbia University and works in Islamic and African philosophy\, logic\, epistemology.  \n\n\n\nThe Ink of the Scholars asks how someone ‘other’ should speak of philosophy when philosophers of the West have been tasked “’with guarding the great divisions (between true and false\, being and nothingness\, just and unjust\, same and other)’ and in so doing establishing the “great ‘division between “the self ” and “the rest\,”’ between a humanity of the logos and the barbarians” (Professor Diagne quoting French philosopher Roger-Pol Droit). \n\n\n\nDiagne considers a common challenge offered by the West to considering African thought as philosophy: “A philosophy to which one adheres\, literally\, without the possibility of questioning it – since there is no outside from which one could do this – is no longer a philosophy.” This has been offered as an explanation for why Bantu (Diagne’s term) understandings of a world animated by a living force would not count as a philosophical ontology.  \n\n\n\nWhat of our own built-in assumptions? What are the philosophies with which we live without the possibility of questioning “since there is no outside from which one could do this?” The dynamic Bantu ontology of a living force is typically opposed to the supposedly static Aristotelian ontology of positing an individual substance and then attributing different predicates to it. \n\n\n\nAnd why\, Diagne asks\, “should the philosophers of exclusion whom Roger-Pol Droit evokes be granted the privilege of defining the ‘field of application’ of the word philosophy?” \n\n\n\nIs African philosophy\, “not like ours\,” the way some think African languages lack the natural European capacity to abstract such that words are not well suited to conceptual thought. Heidegger\, as Diagne points out\, fancied that philosophy had only one language – formerly Greek\, now German. Or is African philosophy like African art\, of which Diagne quotes Picasso saying “African art? With a background that includes Virginia bands After Six\, Front Page News\, and The Groove\, Ann possesses a remarkable vocal range that allows her to deliver exceptional performances\, ranging from the powerful tunes of Janis Joplin to the soulful ballads of Whitney Houston. \n\n\n\nSupporting Ann’s dynamic vocals is her husband\, Barry Brindle\, a gifted guitarist who honed his craft in the popular Connecticut group Biggio Sound before being joined by Ann in The Groove. Together\, they formed the local favorite acoustic duo\, Jonesville\, which was also voted as Waldo County’s Number One band\, solidifying their status as a leading musical force in the area. \n\n\n\nCompleting the Rainmakers rhythm section are two talented musicians. Drummer Tim Woitowitz hails from New York City. After relocated to Maine\, Tim went on to collaborate with various bands\, including Steel Rail Express\, Between Dead Stations\, Memphis Lightning\, and The Juke Rockets. Tim collaborated on The Juke Rockets’ first studio album\, “Hungry Soul\,” recorded at Sunset House Studios. \n\n\n\nSean Oxton is Anni and the Rainmakers newest member. Sean is a highly skilled bass player who has made a name for himself in the local music scene. In her tiny\, dimly lit\, shared kitchen\, she produced hundreds of “pasalubong” (souvenir) boxes filled with especially creative treats that blended the Filipino treats and Western style baked goods she grew up with. It has always been about the people; be it friends or on the street. So I suppose that I’m a portrait photographer. \n\n\n\nYou make contact out in the world with someone that otherwise you would never meet\, and though it’s only a moment\, there is something lovely about it. It’s like a spontaneous moment of theater; a sharing\, a meeting. \n\n\n\nI worked in close for many years\, just a 35mm lens\, and later an 18-200mm.  I asked permission;  “do you mind\, can I take your picture\, look right at me”. So there was always a correspondence between us\, a shared moment\, kind of a small dance with love. People seemed to be very open with me. Perhaps that was my gift. \n\n\n\nAlways black and white. I never worked professionally so my photography was always done on my own terms; just for the joy of the art and the moment. \n\n\n\nThe whole process is a pleasure; from taking the photos\, to printing\, to sharing.
