DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: "The Last Messiah" by Peter Wessel Zapffe
DESCRIPTION:The April 21st session of the Camden Philosophical Society will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe discussion this month\, led by Chuck Merecic\, will continue to explore ideas from the early 20th century philosophers. The focus of this meeting will be the relationship – or lack thereof – between humans\, nature\, and our entire world as presented in the work of Norway’s earliest eco-philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899-1990). The subject materials will be an essay called The Last Messiah\, as well as a satirical conversation titled Farewell Norway. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubject material: \n\n\n\n\nA short biography of Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Last Messiah by Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\n\nFarewell Norway by Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\nChuck provides the following introductory comments: \n\n\n\nAs a follow up to last month’s engaging discussion about Roberto Calasso’s analysis of “The Last Days of Mankind\,” by the Austrian playwright/journalist\, Karl Kraus (1874-1936)\, we will turn our attention to another early 20th century European philosopher\, Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899-1990). Considered to be Norway’s “earliest eco-philosopher”\, Zapffe combined his interests in nature\, mountaineering\, and the philosophies of Nietzsche\, Kierkegaard\, and Schopenhauer to create a deep ecology critiquing the “the human tragedy” that prevents us from understanding our actual place in the world. For Zapffe\, our overdeveloped consciousness is driving us toward extinction in much the same way that overdeveloped antlers caused the demise of the ancient Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus)—too much of a good thing. Foreshadowing Albert Camus\, Zapffe acknowledged the absurdity of the human condition in his essay\, “The Last Messiah”. Against our pleas for unity with the rest of creation\, Nature remains silent and withdrawn. With wit\, and not a little pessimism\, he argues that through our genius \n\n\n\n“[m]an has lost his citizenship in the universe\, he has eaten from the tree of knowledge and has been banished from paradise. He is powerful in his world\, but he curses his power because he has bought it with his soul’s harmony\, his innocence\, his comfort in life’s embrace.” —from “The Last Messiah”

DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor March 3\, Coté will read aloud from Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead. \n\n\n\nSet in the mountains of southern Appalachia\, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenage single mother in a single-wide trailer\, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair\, a caustic wit\, and a fierce talent for survival.  \n\n\n\nRelayed in his own unsparing voice\, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care\, child labor\, derelict schools\, athletic success\, addiction\, disastrous loves\, and crushing losses. Through all of it\, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. \n\n\n\nMany generations ago\, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel\, but he provided its inspiration. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. (This is the new date). \n\n\n\nThe Maine ABLE Program (ABLE ME) provides individuals with disabilities—and their families—a safe\, flexible way to save money without jeopardizing eligibility for important means‑tested public benefits such as SSI or MaineCare. Authorized by the Maine Legislature\, the program is owned by the Maine State Treasurer’s Office and administered in partnership with Bangor Savings Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABLE accounts\, established under the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act\, allow eligible individuals to set aside funds for Qualified Disability Expenses (QDEs) including education\, housing\, transportation\, assistive technology\, employment support\, and basic living expenses like food. Funds in ABLE ME are exempt from taxes\, excluded from state means-tested benefit calculations\, and protected from MaineCare estate recovery. \n\n\n\nDuring this presentation\, we will review eligibility\, fiduciary/non-fiduciary options\, withdrawals\, rollovers\, and documentation before asking question and having conversations. \n\n\n\nThe Coastal Friendship Circle is an educational and supportive group for neurodiverse adults living in coastal Maine. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. She lives in midcoast Maine where she listens to what the ocean has to say\, then runs home to write it down. \n\n\n\nBestLit Review 2018 selected her as one of the ten best prose writers in midcoast Maine based on an excerpt from one of her novels. Blanket Sea nominated one of her pieces for Sundress Publications Best of the Net 2019. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout When Mist and Brine Touch\n\n\n\nAfter a pirate attack leaves Captain Littledove gravely wounded\, his only surviving passenger is Eliza\, a socialite with no practical experience. She must now keep them both alive aboard their abandoned ship\, fighting rats and the elements while following the cantankerous captain’s instructions.  \n\n\n\nAs they work together\, Eliza discovers hidden strengths while Littledove sees beyond her refined manners to recognize her courage. SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
