SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. SUMMARY:"A Feast of Poetry and Song" in the Reading Room (Camden Festival of Poetry)
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome a line-up of accomplished poets and performers to the beautiful Reading Room for an evening of poetry and music on Tuesday\, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. This event will kick off the 4th Annual Camden Festival of Poetry. Free and open to all. \n\n\n\nPoets & Performers\n\n\n\n\nDonna Spruijt-Metz is a poet\, former MacDowell fellow\, rabbinical school drop-out\, and classical flutist. She is also this year’s Festival poet-in-residence\, spending the month of May at the Millay House in Rockland\, ME. Her books include To Phrase a Prayer for Peace (2025)\, General Release from the Beginning of the World (2023)\, Scuttle My Balloon (with Flower Conroy; 2025)\, and an English translation of Lucas Hirsch’s Dutch poems\, Wu Wei Eats an Egg (2025). Her writing project while in residency involves working on a book on grief. She will also be offering a workshop on Saturday morning as part of the Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\nEric Schow\, a Maine Maritime alum from Massachusetts\, now lives in Belfast after journeying across North America by sea and land. Though writing never came easily\, at 40 he’s finally embracing it. Eric builds boats for a living\, enjoys meditation\, and time with his girlfriend April. Most days\, you’ll find him at the Belfast dog park around 4pm\, pondering life and enjoying the moment.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTim Sheehy is happily retired from a career in communications. He and his wife live on the Midcoast where they’ve sailed for 25 years\, tending lovely gardens when not volunteering at organizations focused on connecting people with each other and nature. He is passionate about sailing\, hiking and motorcycling\, and is a published travel writer; his creative arts include poetry and acoustic music. \n\n\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in rural Maine\, Louisa Stancioff has emerged as a gifted writer with a cinematic eye for richly detailed\, emotionally-charged character studies. She grew up learning traditional Bulgarian music from her paternal grandfather’s side of the family and reveled in singing American folk and roots tunes with her friends. After years of touring and recording with her previous indie folk band\, Dyado\, and a dramatic stint in LA in 2020 that inspired many songs and big move back to Maine\, she felt compelled to release music under her own name. Her debut album “When We Were Looking” was released in April 2024 with Yep Roc Records. She has now toured it extensively\, opening for renown bands such as Darlingside\, Blitzen Trapper\, Pokey Lafarge and more\, and is in the works of recording her second album.  \n\n\n\n\n\nEmma Krosschell lives in Brooksville\, Maine\, with her partner and their dog. She spends her time wandering in the woods and baking as much bread as she can. Her first poetry collection\, Hermitage\, was published by Littoral Books in 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\nJim Krosschell has published poems and essays in some 85 journals\, plus two essay collections: One Man’s Maine\, which won a Maine Literary Award\, and Owls Head Revisited. He lives in Deer Isle\, ME and Newton\, MA\, and volunteers on Boards for Coastal Mountains Land Trust and Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. \n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster is former Poet Laurate of Belfast. Her poetry\, essays\, and fiction have appeared in more than forty journals. Her most recent book is Journey Waters. Poems\, Prose\, Places (Huntress Press 2025)\, a retrospective of 25 years of writing. She currently leads community-based writing workshops.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMark S. Burrows\, who will M.C. the event\, is an award-winning poet\, translator\, and scholar\, as well as co-founder of the Camden Festival of Poetry. Together with Jon Sweeney\, he has published three books of meditative poems inspired by Meister Eckhart’s writings\, most recently Meister Eckhart’s Book of Darkness and Light which was awarded the Gold Medal by the Nautilus Book Awards in 2024. His translations of German poetry include\, most recently\, the first full-length translation of the German-Jewish poet Hilde Domin’s poems\, The Wandering Radiance: Selected Poems of Hilde Domin (2023) and a new translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus (2024). He also recently published You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke (2024)\, cowritten with Stephanie Dowrick. DESCRIPTION:The local 6th grade class from Camden-Rockport Middle School will host a kick-off event on Wednesday\, May 13\, 11:30 AM in the Picker Room for their Art with Impact project. \n\n\n\nThe students researched how a changing climate is impacting the “Maine way of life” and created engaging pieces of art that integrate real data\, inspired by the work of scientist and artist Jill Pelto. \n\n\n\nThe artworks will be placed around our community to share what the students have learned. SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, May 1. Tuesdays morning yoga will resume starting Tuesday\, June 16. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. You are welcome to just show up\, but it is recommended to join the email list in case of a scheduling or location change due to weather. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: "The Sovereignty of the Good Over Other Concepts"
DESCRIPTION:The May 19th session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm eastern on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur next reading will address meaning and the consciousness of the human species seen from the full complexity of our being and asks this: even if our “natural” energy system is turned inward\, and our “cosmic panic” leads us to seek relief in isolation\, attachment\, diversion and sublimation; even if our “natural” self craves relief from a perceived “meaninglessness” is there not a position to take against those accounts that purport the inadequacy and hopelessness of human nature?   \n\n\n\nIn Iris Murdoch’s reading\, “The Sovereignty of Good” she will explore this question of “how can we make ourselves good?” What does good look like and what part does beauty play in drawing ourself away from ourself? This is Murdoch’s “un-selfing” that pierces the veil of selfish  consciousness and reduces the “fat\, relentless ego” allowing us to see more clearly the reality of our existence; it is a shift of consciousness away from our own selfish anxieties to the outside world. It is our imagination stimulated by both art and nature that enables this shift. As Murdoch says: \n\n\n\n\n“On intellectual disciplines and in the enjoyment of art and nature we discover value in our ability to forget self\, to be realistic\, to perceive justly. We use our imagination not to escape the world but to join it\, and this exhilarates us because of the distance between our ordinary dulled consciousness and an apprehension of the real.” \n\n\n\n\nMore introductory remarks will be provided on the 19th. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer and teaches mushroom identification and ecology to hundreds of new foragers. For more than two decades he has consulted in cases of mushroom poisoning across New England. \n\n\n\nGreg is the author of Mushrooms for Health: Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi (2009) and Chanterelle Dreams\, Amanita Nightmares\, The Love Lore and Mystique of Mushrooms (2010). He lives and mushrooms along the coast of Maine. When not mushrooming\, he works as a mental health trainer and consultant in suicide prevention and response after a loss.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, May 1. Tuesdays morning yoga will resume starting Tuesday\, June 16. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. You are welcome to just show up\, but it is recommended to join the email list in case of a scheduling or location change due to weather. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. Donations are suggested with a portion of the proceeds donated directly to Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience.
