SUMMARY:CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter Resilient Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Fall 2025 Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group will meet on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Dates are 9/23\, 10/7 (bonus session)\, 10/28\, 11/11\, 11/25\, 12/9\, 12/23\, 1/13/26\, 1/27/26. May include a zoom component if desired. If you have questions or would like to preregister\, email camdencan2025@gmail.com.  \n\n\n\nThe ultimate goal of these book discussions is to inform as well as expand one another’s understandings of the moment we are living in. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur first book will be Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet by Kate Marvel. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. As the author states\, “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.”

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Off the Shelf" BiblioQuilt Prints by Larry Clifford
DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes multimedia artist Larry Clifford for his exhibit “Off the Shelf\,” featuring large-scale prints of his geometrically intricate BiblioQuilts made from salvaged books. On view in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of January.* \n\n\n\nClifford’s BiblioQuilts and murals are created using distressed books that were salvaged from basements\, attics\, and public libraries throughout Maine. He repurposes every part of the books—the covers\, the pages\, the spines—breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes\, inks\, and acrylics. \n\n\n\n“Postcards\, maps\, and other ephemera may be tempting\, but I restrict my palette to neglected books\,” Clifford says. “That’s what makes the work both challenging and unique.”\n\n\n\nQuilts made from recycled cloth are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a whole new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” that were meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged hardcovers – books that no one has read or paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“I carry an inventory of pre-made BiblioQuilts\, and I collaborate with families\, libraries\, and communities on commissioned pieces\,” says Clifford. “My goal is to create original works-of-art that evoke warm memories for everyone involved. The books that my clients supply may be damaged\, deaccessioned\, or obsolete – but they should never be forgotten.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University then an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas\, Larry Clifford spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations\, with an emphasis on traditional media like pen-and-ink\, carbon dust\, and watercolor. \n\n\n\nClifford then switched to strategic planning\, marketing\, and business development for the nonprofit sector. More recently he is thrilled to be getting back to his roots as a maker of fine crafts.
