Together\, we’ll tackle topics like creating home and community gardens\, mastering water wisdom\, finding energy solutions\, fostering local livelihoods and wealth\, embracing bioregionalism\, and rethinking governance. Bring your curiosity\, your ideas\, and your passion for resilience—your voice will help secure our community’s future.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoline Blais will be the discussion leader. Joline researches regenerative design\, teaches permaculture and advises the Terrell House Permaculture Center at UMaine. She is a steering committee member of CamdenCAN\, and board member of PAN (Permaculture Association of the Northeast). Past projects include co-directing LongGreenHouse\, an educational partnership with Wabanaki neighbors\, emphasizing indigenous knowledge and collaboration\, and working as a co-founding member of Belfast Ecovillage. Additionally\, Joline serves as President of the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center. Over 4000 species of bees inhabit North America\, and most don’t live in hives or make honey. In fact\, wild bees come in every size\, shape\, and color you can imagine\, and they live all around us\, hiding in plain sight. In this lecture\, Dr. Nick Dorian will introduce you to the wild bees of New England. Together\, we’ll examine their varied lifestyles\, habitat needs\, and intricate relationships they have with native flowering plants and other insects. You’ll come away clear action items for how to notice\, appreciate\, and help these important pollinators in your backyard. \n\n\n\nDr. Nick Dorian is an ecologist\, an educator\, and a naturalist. He received his Ph.D. from Tufts University where he studied the ecology and conservation of wild bees. At Tufts\, Nick also co-founded and ran the Tufts Pollinator Initiative (sites.tufts.edu/pollinators)\, which worked to build capacity for community-based pollinator conservation through habitat creation\, place-based education\, and ecological research. Currently\, Nick is a post-doctoral researcher at the Chicago Botanic Garden where he studies how to optimize pollinator gardens for biodiversity conservation. \n\n\n\n\nLeaf-cutter bees (Megachile spp.) collect pollen in special hairs under their abdomens\n\n\n\nUnequal cellophane bees (Colletes inaequalis) are common in early spring across eastern North America where they build nests underground in sandy soils.\n\n\n\nBicolored striped sweat bees (Agapostemon virescens) can be easily seen on purple coneflowers in backyards and gardens in summer months.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Garden Club is a the oldest garden club in Maine. The Club was founded in 1915 by a group of like-minded women with the mission to develop and preserve the beauty in and around Camden\, Maine. \n\n\n\nOver a century later\, our mission is to cultivate the art of gardening to its fullest sense\, develop and preserve beauty in and around Camden\, and promotes civic improvements\, education\, and conservation of natural resources.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Professor Carter Jones Meyer for her talk\, “Democracy and Native America: Indigenous Voices from the Front”. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place on Sunday\, February 9 at 3:00 PM in-person ONLY at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe Indians Giving a Talk to Colonel Bouquet… in Oct. 1764. Library of Congress.\n\n\n\nThe theme of the 2025 Camden Conference focuses on threats to democracy around the world. But what about in the U.S.? Can democracy itself become a threat\, especially to the way of life of indigenous peoples? \n\n\n\nSince the nation’s inception\, Native Americans have had their lands\, their cultures\, and their sovereignty threatened by a U.S. Government seeking to impose its own ideas of liberty\, equality\, and justice\, principles that were often already deeply imbedded in Native cultures and governance. The paradoxes that emerged through these encounters are undeniable\, and have not been lost on Natives themselves\, who have continually reminded the Government of that fact. \n\n\n\n“Democracy and Native America: Indigenous Voices from the Front” will explore some of these paradoxes in U.S. history through the voices of Native leaders who have been on the front lines in protecting their way of life from “democratic” incursions. In the process\, they have often drawn from indigenous knowledge to point out the shortcomings of American democratic principles as well as to suggest ways by which a more vital\, inclusive democracy can be realized. \n\n\n\n\nCarter Jones Meyer\, Professor Emerita of History at Ramapo College of New Jersey\, most recently taught Native American history at the University of Southern Maine. Her research and teaching have focused on late nineteenth and early twentieth century American cultural history\, with a specialty in the history of the American West and Native history.  \n\n\n\nHer scholarly papers have been presented before such leading professional organizations as the American Historical Association\, The American Studies Association\, and the Western History Association. Among her publications is the seminal Selling the Indian: Commercializing and Appropriating American Indian Cultures. She holds the B.A. in American Studies from Skidmore College\, and the A.M. and Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University.

Refreshments and activities for families will be provided. \n\n\n\nCamden was awarded its third Community Resilience Partnership Community Action Grant by the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future (GOPIF) over a year ago to help fund resilience planning for Camden’s Inner Harbor as well as a Shore and Harbor Planning Grant from the Maine Coastal Program. \n\n\n\nPrior to this event\, the consultant team has conducted site assessment\, mapped flood vulnerability\, hosted the first community-wide engagement event and organized three stakeholder meetings with CamdenCAN/Municipal Staff/Business Owners. Now we want to welcome everyone to review preliminary resilience strategies and lend your thoughts on the planning progress. \n\n\n\nIn this session Blake Sanborn\, Todd Richardson and Todd Coffin\, from Richardson & Associates/WSP\, will share results of the community survey and two preliminary draft alternatives developed from the input gathered to date. Participants will be asked to comment on the drafts and offer suggestions for improvement that will inform a preferred alternative and final set of recommendations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening is being presented by CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. She is involved in collaborations across the Cornell Lab and Cornell University\, where she aims to support the public in engaging in activities to better support birds and biodiversity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Garden Club is a the oldest garden club in Maine. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Pamela Cox for her talk\, “Is Democracy the Secret Sauce for Growth and Prosperity?” This event will take place on Sunday\, January 19 at 3:00 PM in-person at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nIn the last 75 years there has been an unprecedented increase in economic growth and even more importantly\, in global prosperity\, as poverty rates have plummeted and the ranks of the middle class have grown.  At the same time\, there has been an increase in the number of countries classified as democracies.  Is there a link?  Do democracies grow faster and do their citizens enjoy higher incomes and better lives?  \n\n\n\nAs challenges to democracies increase around the world – in both high income countries in Europe and the United States\, as well as in poorer countries such as India – what might this portend for future growth and prosperity? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPamela Cox is an economist with over 34 years working on economic and development issues. During her career she worked on economic issues in Latin America\, Africa\, India and East Asia. At the World Bank she served as Vice President of the Latin America region and subsequently Vice President of the East Asia Region. In these roles she was responsible for coordinating and implementing World Bank research\, activities and lending in these regions. Prior to her retirement in 2013\, she served as Senior Vice President for Strategy\, leading strategy development for the World Bank Group. She has a PhD from the Fletcher School\, Tufts University. She is currently the President of the League of Women Voters of Maine/Democracy Maine\, and serves on several other boards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference\, “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, January 16\, at 6:30 PM with a presentation from André Breton about his incredible adventure across the hemispheres by bicycle. \n\n\n\nAndré Breton’s ambitious journey began on September 11\, 2023\, in Cartwright\, Labrador\, Canada\, and ended 284 days later in Ushuaia\, Argentina. The primary goals of Climate Zero were twofold: to plant enough trees to zero out his 52-year carbon footprint and to ride a bicycle from 54° north to 54° south\, a complete transect of the Americas. \n\n\n\nThis program will be held in person in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nClimate Zero was an opportunity for André to challenge himself and to raise awareness about the devastating implications of climate change. His journey demonstrated that everyone can make a positive difference in the global effort to reverse climate change. André will share some of his experiences and insights from living on a bike for most of a year\, and hopes his story will inspire others to take action to address climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. What does this mean for Turkey and the world? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, presents Professor Senem Aslan for her talk\, “Erdoğan’s ‘New Turkey’: Politics of Emotions and Authoritarian Populism.” This event will take place on Saturday\, January 11 at 2:00 PM in-person at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nRecep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been in power for the last two decades\, far longer than most populist leaders. This talk will survey key political\, social\, and economic changes under Erdoğan’s rule\, examining how his regime has undermined Turkey’s fragile democratic institutions and shifted the country toward authoritarianism\, characterized by free yet unfair elections. It will discuss how emotional strategies have contributed to Erdoğan’s sustained popularity and longevity\, even in the face of significant policy failures. \n\n\n\n\nSenem Aslan is professor of Politics at Bates College. She is the author of Nation-Building in Turkey and Morocco: Governing Kurdish and Berber Dissent published by Cambridge University Press in 2015. She is currently writing a new book on performative-emotional politics in Erdoğan’s Turkey.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference\, “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective.” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at carving! The library’s own Amy Hand will teach this rubber stamp carving workshop for Jumpstart January on Thursday\, January 9\, at 6:00 (6 o’clock!) p.m. – 7:30 p.m. IN PERSON in the Picker Room! We require sign ups so we know how many materials to provide.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is now full. \n\n\n\nBring an idea or sketch of something you want to carve.  Amy will teach you how to create your design\, transfer it to your rubber and then learn carving techniques. This is great for experienced or newbie carvers. You will walk away with at least one completed carve and prints from the evening. \n\n\n\nThere is a $10 fee which covers the cost of rubber and a speedball carving tool with blades\, and papers to print on. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Jon Byrer for an exhibit of his poured paintings titled “Marvelous Marbled Maine Landscapes” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of January*. The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday\, January 4\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.  \n\n\n\nJon Byrer graduated from the Maine College of Art where he received a degree in photography and studied the fine arts. Jon creates oil paintings\, experimental photography\, and watercolor illustrations. He has been living and working in the midcoast area for the past 25 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\n“These paintings are my attempt at capturing the beauty of a fleeting moment. The sunrise over the ocean\, the clouds reflecting on the surface of a lake\, or a brief bloom of flowers. All of these moments are gone in an instant. One goal is to capture the momentary beauty around me. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPainting without brushes. At no point does a paint brush touch the canvas to manipulate the paint in this innovative process. These paintings are created by pouring numerous serendipitous puddles of enamel oil paint to create a unified image. Puddles of paint turn into landscapes\, a vase of flowers\, or even a portrait. With the canvas laid horizontally\, the paint is poured\, dripped\, and carefully drizzled out of cups. Puddle paintings are made by pouring numerous puddles of paint onto the canvas from above. This process is done from start to finish with a wet on wet paint technique over 8-12 hours. \n\n\n\nThe entire surface of the canvas is slowly covered with puddles of paint which are carefully merged into one smooth cohesive layer that dries like glass. The mixing marbled colors are frozen in place when dried but maintain their swirling sense of movement. This technique reimagines how paintings are traditionally created without using an easel or paint brush. The puddles of paint emerge as familiar scenes of Maine’s magic and the splendor of the everyday. \n\n\n\nAnother important aspect of my practice is community art. Especially art in Libraries. Libraries are for everyone; for people who are seeking new ideas. Art is for open minded people who are looking for beauty. Libraries provide me an art venue within the community. By visiting public libraries and showing my paintings\, I can bring my version of beauty to many different people who are seeking knowledge. Part of my art practice is getting the work out to the world through public libraries. Art cannot exist in isolation.
