DESCRIPTION:The April 21st session of the Camden Philosophical Society will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe discussion this month\, led by Chuck Merecic\, will continue to explore ideas from the early 20th century philosophers. The focus of this meeting will be the relationship – or lack thereof – between humans\, nature\, and our entire world as presented in the work of Norway’s earliest eco-philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899-1990). The subject materials will be an essay called The Last Messiah\, as well as a satirical conversation titled Farewell Norway. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubject material: \n\n\n\n\nA short biography of Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Last Messiah by Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\n\nFarewell Norway by Peter Wessel Zapffe\n\n\n\n\nChuck provides the following introductory comments: \n\n\n\nAs a follow up to last month’s engaging discussion about Roberto Calasso’s analysis of “The Last Days of Mankind\,” by the Austrian playwright/journalist\, Karl Kraus (1874-1936)\, we will turn our attention to another early 20th century European philosopher\, Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899-1990). Considered to be Norway’s “earliest eco-philosopher”\, Zapffe combined his interests in nature\, mountaineering\, and the philosophies of Nietzsche\, Kierkegaard\, and Schopenhauer to create a deep ecology critiquing the “the human tragedy” that prevents us from understanding our actual place in the world. For Zapffe\, our overdeveloped consciousness is driving us toward extinction in much the same way that overdeveloped antlers caused the demise of the ancient Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus)—too much of a good thing. Foreshadowing Albert Camus\, Zapffe acknowledged the absurdity of the human condition in his essay\, “The Last Messiah”. Against our pleas for unity with the rest of creation\, Nature remains silent and withdrawn. With wit\, and not a little pessimism\, he argues that through our genius \n\n\n\n“[m]an has lost his citizenship in the universe\, he has eaten from the tree of knowledge and has been banished from paradise. He is powerful in his world\, but he curses his power because he has bought it with his soul’s harmony\, his innocence\, his comfort in life’s embrace.” —from “The Last Messiah”

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "The Black Tulip" by Alexandre Dumas
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor March 3\, Coté will read aloud from Alexandre Dumas’ The Black Tulip. \n\n\n\n“Sometimes one has suffered so much that he has the right never to be able to say\, ‘I am too happy.’” \n\n\n\nThe story begins in 1672\, with a historic event: the lynching of the Dutch Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis\, considered rebels against the upcoming stadtholder and the Prince of Orange\, William III. \n\n\n\nThe plot takes place while tulip mania grips the Netherlands. The main fictional character\, Cornelius Van Baerle\, belongs to the natural school whose motto was: “To despise flowers is to offend God”\, and thus followed the syllogism: \n\n\n\n“To despise flowers is to offend God\,The more beautiful the flower is\, the more does one offend God in despising it\,The tulip is the most beautiful of all flowers\,Therefore\, he who despises the tulip offends God beyond measure”.  \n\n\n\nThe city of Haarlem has offered a prize of 100\,000 francs to whoever can grow a black tulip. At stake was not only the prize\, but fame and honor; the winner would also have his name included in that given to the tulip itself. \n\n\n\nThe prosperous Cornelius Van Baerle\, godson of Cornelius de Witt\, is known in his locale for the growing of tulips and he takes up the challenge to grow a black tulip. His neighbor\, Isaac Boxtel who is also a gardener\, watches his every move and fearing Cornelius’ success\, starts plotting. Boxtel\, motivated by envy\, denounces Van Baerle because of his relation to the brothers De Witt who are both now considered traitors. \n\n\n\nVan Baerle is arrested and condemned to a life sentence in prison. Religious beliefs are used in the narrative for dramatic effect and also words such as “Fate”\, “Providence” and “Misfortune”. Misfortune plays a major influence throughout the events of Van Baerle’s life\, but at the end turns out to be a major act of Providence\, showing that God is always in control\, both in sadness as in happiness. \n\n\n\nIn prison\, Van Baerle meets the beautiful daughter of the jailer\, Rosa Gryphus. Cornelius loses everything but had kept the bulbs of the tulips\, which were expected to have black flowers. Amid loss and sorrow\, Rosa helps him to grow the flower in the jail. DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, April 16\, at 6:30 PM with a Zoom presentation all about wildlife tracking. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual presentation on Zoom. Register for the webinar and you will receive a link to join in your email. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWildlife tracking is a useful skill for photographers\, hunters\, biologists\, conservationists\, and nature enthusiasts who want a deeper connection with wild creatures. It can involve much more than looking down at tracks. Interpreting trail patterns\, scat\, claw marks\, hair snags\, dens\, beds\, feeding sign\, etc. are also useful\, and often more revealing\, and we will touch on all. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a Zoom presentation by Janet Pesaturo\, who works to bring broader awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of our natural world through camera trapping. She is the author of Camera Trapping Guide: Tracks\, Sign\, and Behavior of Eastern Wildlife. \n\n\n\nJanet is focused on learning more about animal behavior by strategically placing trail cameras in “great animal spots.” Her goal is to share everything she learns about animals\, animal behavior\, and the techniques used to study them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. Come hungry!). \n\n\n\nWorking Waterfront: A Fish Tale offers readers an insider’s perspective on the coast\, community\, and people of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank. The book is a fast-paced narrative\, told with wit\, humor\, honesty\, and a nod to the spiritual journey inherent in life by the sea. In addition to captivating stories\, the book features a collection of recipes that reflect the region’s rich culinary traditions. \n\n\n\nBill Gerencer\, author of Working Waterfront: A Fish Tale\, has been an integral part of the New England Waterfront and Seafood Community since 1980. His experience spans multiple roles\, including working as a lobsterman\, commercial fisherman\, fishmonger\, trainer\, and oyster farmer. Through these varied positions\, Bill has developed a deep understanding of the industry and its people.Beyond his hands-on experience\, Bill has also played an influential role in shaping fisheries policy. He has served as a Ground Fish Advisor and as a Highly Migratory Species Advisor to NOAA Fisheries\, and has dedicated ten years to the Portland Fish Exchange Board of Directors. \n\n\n\nBill is currently retired and in addition to writing he works part-time at an oyster farm and as a seafood consultant.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. Whether audience members are hearing him for the first time or were s enraptured by his technical skill and poised delivery that they’ve become diehard fans\, Fletcher understands how to put together a repertoire that keeps audiences wanting more. Handel’s “The Harmonious Blacksmith” by 19th Century Italian guitarist and composer Mauro Giuliani; Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega’s extraordinarily beautiful Capricho Arabe; and three studies by Spanish composer Fernando Sor. \n\n\n\nThe concert will continue with Simple Gifts\, a Traditional Shaker Hymn arranged for guitar by guitarist Christopher Parkening. Some organized gardeners have already started seedlings and sketched out plots. If you haven’t\, you can still get on board with small acts of gardening. Or you may have be looking for a gardening plot. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, April 9\, 6:30 PM at Camden Public Library and on Zoom for “Compost & Community: Garden Support from Other Growers\, Compost\, and Critters” to answer these needs and learn exciting ways to improve your 2026 garden. Hosted by CamdenCAN and Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nJoelle Albury from Erikson Fields Preserve and Aldermere Farm Preserve will talk about the ways your can get your hands dirty with community gardening\, including fun benefits\, like regular potlucks\, community work days\, and just the joy of getting to know new friends at a new growing place. Joelle will be joined by ScrapDogs’ Tessa Rosenberry who will help us understand the many ways that composting your food and garden scraps can improve your life (and help the planet!). \n\n\n\nThis program takes place in person at the library as well as on Zoom. (Photo credit: MCHT)\n\n\n\nA dairy farm for generations\, Erickson Fields has 120-square-foot plots available for $75 each. Financial assistance is available on a sliding scale. Erickson Fields\, which sits on an idyllic breezy knoll\, is close to the intersection of US 1 and Rt. 90. \n\n\n\nThe gardens are surrounded by a deer fence and offer water\, manure\, a shed for tools\, and guidance. Nearby\, a spirited Teen Ag Crew tends their impressive gardens. (The plots are currently filled\, but we are accepting applications for anyone who would like to be added to a waitlist.) \n\n\n\nScrapDogs collects food scraps and other organic waste\, diverting this material from landfills and incinerators and creating valuable products for gardens and farms. (Photo credit: Jack Sullivan)\n\n\n\nErickson Fields is a preserve of Maine Coast Heritage Trust\, a statewide land conservation organization. The Trust maintains Erickson Fields as a working farm that annually produces thousands of pounds of produce for local food assistance programs and hosts educational programs for the community. \n\n\n\nScrapDogs Community Compost is a food scrap collection and composting service founded in 2018 with the goal of diverting food waste away from landfills and incinerators\, while simultaneously strengthening the local food system. ScrapDogs\, based in Rockland\, serves a growing number of coastal communities from Belfast to Wiscasset\, and along the Kennebec River from Waterville to Gardiner. \n\n\n\nScrapDogs’ finished compost is made with food scraps from Maine homes\, schools\, and businesses\, as well as lobster and oyster shells\, animal manures\, and hardwood bark–transforming undervalued resources into gold for your garden and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWondering how you can help the planet\, clean out your trash\, and get some luscious compost for your own garden?
