SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Welcome to Sardineland" from the Penobscot Marine Museum
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Sardineland is on display in the library’s Picker Room during the month of April.* Join PMM Digital Curator Matt Wheeler on Thursday\, April 30\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room for the accompanying talk. \n\n\n\nFor twentieth-century Maine coastal communities\, herring (marketed as sardines) equaled money. Canneries\, fishing weirs\, and herring fishing boats called the Maine coast home\, from the Canadian to New Hampshire borders. \n\n\n\nBeginning in 1875\, the Sardine Industry and Herring Fishery was a major economic driver; the sardine canneries employed hundreds of women\, more than the number of men fishing for herring. Changes in American eating habits\, competition for herring as bait\, and federal quota restrictions led to the closing of Maine’s last sardine cannery in 2010. \n\n\n\nThis exhibit draws from the Penobscot Marine Museum’s extensive collections documenting the Maine sardine industry from catching to processing to marketing these tiny but mighty fish.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibit also relates to Penobscot Marine Museum’s 2026 season exhibit of the same name\, which opens in late May.  \n\n\n\n* The Picker Room is also used for programs\, events\, and private meetings. Check the calendar and call the library to ensure the Picker Room is open for viewing.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. Some organized gardeners have already started seedlings and sketched out plots. If you haven’t\, you can still get on board with small acts of gardening. Or you may have be looking for a gardening plot. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, April 9\, 6:30 PM at Camden Public Library and on Zoom for “Compost & Community: Garden Support from Other Growers\, Compost\, and Critters” to answer these needs and learn exciting ways to improve your 2026 garden. Hosted by CamdenCAN and Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nJoelle Albury from Erikson Fields Preserve and Aldermere Farm Preserve will talk about the ways your can get your hands dirty with community gardening\, including fun benefits\, like regular potlucks\, community work days\, and just the joy of getting to know new friends at a new growing place. Joelle will be joined by ScrapDogs’ Tessa Rosenberry who will help us understand the many ways that composting your food and garden scraps can improve your life (and help the planet!). \n\n\n\nThis program takes place in person at the library as well as on Zoom. Registration is not required if attending in-person. \n\n\n\n\nRegister to watch virtually on Zoom\n\n\n\n\nA community gardener tending their plot at Erickson Fields. Erickson Fields\, which sits on an idyllic breezy knoll\, is close to the intersection of US 1 and Rt. 90. \n\n\n\nThe gardens are surrounded by a deer fence and offer water\, manure\, a shed for tools\, and guidance. Nearby\, a spirited Teen Ag Crew tends their impressive gardens. (The plots are currently filled\, but we are accepting applications for anyone who would like to be added to a waitlist.) \n\n\n\nScrapDogs collects food scraps and other organic waste\, diverting this material from landfills and incinerators and creating valuable products for gardens and farms. (Photo credit: Jack Sullivan)\n\n\n\nErickson Fields is a preserve of Maine Coast Heritage Trust\, a statewide land conservation organization. The Trust maintains Erickson Fields as a working farm that annually produces thousands of pounds of produce for local food assistance programs and hosts educational programs for the community. \n\n\n\nScrapDogs Community Compost is a food scrap collection and composting service founded in 2018 with the goal of diverting food waste away from landfills and incinerators\, while simultaneously strengthening the local food system. ScrapDogs\, based in Rockland\, serves a growing number of coastal communities from Belfast to Wiscasset\, and along the Kennebec River from Waterville to Gardiner. \n\n\n\nScrapDogs’ finished compost is made with food scraps from Maine homes\, schools\, and businesses\, as well as lobster and oyster shells\, animal manures\, and hardwood bark–transforming undervalued resources into gold for your garden and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWondering how you can help the planet\, clean out your trash\, and get some luscious compost for your own garden? DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Through these varied positions\, Bill has developed a deep understanding of the industry and its people.Beyond his hands-on experience\, Bill has also played an influential role in shaping fisheries policy. He has served as a Ground Fish Advisor and as a Highly Migratory Species Advisor to NOAA Fisheries\, and has dedicated ten years to the Portland Fish Exchange Board of Directors. \n\n\n\nBill is currently retired and in addition to writing he works part-time at an oyster farm and as a seafood consultant.
