DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate: "Plug-In Solar May Be Coming to Maine" with Wesley Schrock (CamdenCAN) — Zoom Only
DESCRIPTION:A new kind of solar system could be coming to town – in villages and cities around Maine. Small systems with built-in inverters now allow nearly everyone to have several panels (up to 1\,200 KW) mounted by or on their residence and plugging into a regular outlet. “Plug-in” or “balcony” solar is popular in Europe and now U.S. states – including Maine – are moving to adopt regulations to allow these small\, affordable systems. \n\n\n\nLearn about how plug-in solar works\, why it can make solar more accessible\, and what’s happening in Maine with legislation to permit it. Wesley Schrock\, of the nonprofit Bright Saver in San Francisco\, will present on plug-in solar as part of CamdenCAN’s “Camden Talks Climate” presentations with the Camden Public Library. Schrock has worked with Bright Saver almost since the organization was founded (late in 2024). \n\n\n\n\nRegister to attend the webinar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) is a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: "The Perpetual War" and Roberto Calasso
DESCRIPTION:The March 17th session of the Camden Philosophical Society will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nThe discussion this month\, led by Peter Aldrich\, will take a somewhat unorthodox and idiomatic approach towards philosophical dialogue. The subject material will be an essay called “The Perpetual War” written by the Italian polymath\, author\, critic\, and editor Roberto Calasso. It is one of the numerous essays in his 1991 collection called The Forty Nine Steps. \n\n\n\nOur discussion will focus on pages 91-108 “The Perpetual War” found here. \n\n\n\nPeter provides this introduction:  \n\n\n\n\n“The Perpetual War” is a provocative\, enthusiastic\, and deeply respectful appreciation of early 20th century journalist\, author\, and performance artist Karl Klaus. The essay examines Klaus’ more than 700 weekly satirical performances between the years 1896-1934 and the direct connection and overlap with his most acclaimed drama “The Last Days Of Mankind.” \n\n\n\nKlaus was three times nominated for the Nobel prize. For years his weekly performances were sold out. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein\, a fellow Austrian\, is said to have never missed a performance and in a 1931 published article acknowledged Klaus\, along with a number of famous philosophers\, logicians and mathematicians\, as a strong influence on clarifying his own work. Klaus additionally\, was a brilliant and witty aphorist\, as evidenced in his query: How is the world ruled and led to war? Diplomats lie to journalists and believe these lies when they see them in print. \n\n\n\nCalasso clearly recognizes Klaus’ prodigious prophetic ability to accurately discern  the moral and political zeitgeist that underpinned Austrian culture in his time. What was he seeing and thinking about that the rest of Vienna and Europe wasn’t paying attention to or thinking about in the years preceding and during WWI?  \n\n\n\nHow did Klaus arrive at his epiphanies? What was his method or process and how similar was it to Socrates’? Like Socrates in the first sentence of Plato’s “Republic\, Klaus ventures down to Piraeus\, the port city of Athens\, only it is Vienna and the year is around 1910. Perhaps\, also\, we can draw a straight line to Hannah Arendt’s “Eichmann In Jerusalem” in which she proposes Eichmann’s real evil was his inability to think for himself\, and that like the citizens in Klaus’ Vienna 1910\, he had contentedly and lazily given a “fully mechanized and mobilized” institution the power to do his thinking and governing for him. Not\, perhaps\, unlike what Thomas Hobbs proposed in “Leviathan.”

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. Join Michael Wojtech for an exploration of bark\, which is always visible\, in any season. As you hone your perceptive abilities you will learn about a system for identifying tree species by their bark\, and discover why such a variety of bark characteristics exist. Though the book’s plant ID section covers trees of the Northeast\, much of the material inside speaks to the characteristics and function of bark anywhere–so it’s fascinating wherever you live. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor March 20\, Coté will read aloud from Charles “Charlie” Chaplin’s My Autobiography. \n\n\n\nA silent comedy star whose legendary slapstick routines are recognizable to this day\, Charles ‘Charlie’ Chaplin’s My Autobiography is an incomparably vivid account of the life of one of the greatest filmmakers and comedians\, with an introduction by David Robinson. \n\n\n\nAs a child\, Charlie Chaplin was awed and inspired by the sight of glamorous vaudeville stars passing his home\, and from then on\, he never lost his ambition to become an actor.  \n\n\n\nChaplin’s film career as the Little Tramp adored by the whole world is the stuff of legend\, but this frank autobiography shows another side.  \n\n\n\nSir Charles ‘Charlie’ Chaplin was born into a theatrical family in 1895 in Walworth\, London. Chaplin’s father died of drink while his mother\, unable to bear the poverty\, suffered from bouts of insanity.  \n\n\n\nFrom a childhood of grinding poverty in the south London slums\, Chaplin found an escape in his early debut on the music hall stage\, followed by his lucky break in America\, the founding of United Artists with D.W. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks\, the struggle to maintain artistic control over his work\, the string of failed marriages\, and his eventual exile from Hollywood after personal scandals and persecution for his left-wing politics during the McCarthy Era. \n\n\n\nBest known for his work in silent films\, his most famous role was The Little Tramp\, a universally recognizable and iconic character who appeared in films such as The Kid (1921)\, The Gold Rush (1925) and City Lights (1931). Other films include Modern Times (1936)\, a commentary on the Great Depression\, and The Great Dictator (1940)\, a satirical attack on Hitler and the Nazis. In addition to celebratory cupcakes\, we will also have a sticky note board where we invite you to share why you love CPL. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Herring Gut Coastal Science Center and Midcoast Conservancy are hosting this pop-up professional development workshop all about wetlands. This is not a Camden Public Library event\, but will take place in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library on Wednesday\, March 25\, 4:00 –  5:45 PM. \n\n\n\nBuild a wetland model to teach students the types of wetlands present in Maine and how they function to filter and clean water much like our kidneys. Receive a stipend\, 1.5 contact hours\, and a class materials kit!
