DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor June 1\, Coté will read aloud from E. E. Cummings’ A Life. \n\n\n\nCummings\, in his radical experimentation with form\, punctuation\, spelling\, and syntax\, created a new kind of poetic expression.  \n\n\n\nBecause of his powerful work\, he became a generation’s beloved heretic—at the time of his death he was one of the most widely read poets in the United States.  \n\n\n\nIn this rich\, illuminating biography\, Susan Cheever traces the development of the poet and his work. She takes us from Cummings’s seemingly idyllic childhood in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, through his years at Harvard (rooming with Dos Passos\, befriending Malcolm Cowley and Lincoln Kirstein).  \n\n\n\nThere\, he devoured the poetry of Ezra Pound\, whose radical verses lured the young writer away from the politeness of the traditional nature poem towards a more adventurous\, sexually conscious form.  \n\n\n\nThe biography follows Cummings to Paris in 1917\, and\, finally\, to Greenwich Village to be among other modernist poets of the day—Marianne Moore and Hart Crane\, among them.  \n\n\n\nE. E. DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, May 1. Tuesdays morning yoga will resume starting Tuesday\, June 16. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. Marxsen for a book talk on her recent biography\, Karen Blixen’s Search for Self: The Making of ‘Out of Africa’\, on Thursday\, June 4 at 6:00 PM. This event will take place in the library’s beautiful and historic Reading Room. Books will be for sale from Owl & Turtle with an opportunity for signing. \n\n\n\nIn Karen Blixen’s Search for Self\, Patti M. Marxsen presents a twenty-first-century reconsideration of the iconic 1937 memoir Out of Africa by Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). \n\n\n\nThis “book about a book” draws on seasoned historical perspectives of European colonial activities in early twentieth-century Africa as it engages Blixen’s letters\, tales\, speeches\, interviews\, the photographic record of her various personas\, memoir literature of others who knew her\, and three generations of scholarship\, including pointed postcolonial critiques. Mixing scholarly research with personal reflection\, Marxsen recounts an inspiring tale of a writer’s evolution\, along with thoughtful analysis of the art and craft of memoir. \n\n\n\n\n\nFill out my LGL Form!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatti M. Marxsen is an essayist\, biographer\, independent scholar\, and translator (FR>EN) whose writings have been published in the USA\, Europe\, and the Caribbean. She is the author of three biographical studies\, two essay collections\, a collection of short fiction\, and numerous articles and reviews related to visual art and Haitian literature. \n\n\n\nLike her studies of Helene Schweitzer and Jacques Roumain\, Marxsen’s most recent focus involves a mid-twentieth-century vision of Africa through the life of a complex\, European/Europeanized figure. Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen) is the author of one of the most famous memoirs of the 20th century: Out of Africa. Her complex life\, her evolution as a writer\, and her contested legacy form the subject of Marxsen’s thought-provoking and multi-faceted analysis found in Karen Blixen’s Search for Self: The Making of ‘Out of Africa’ (LSU Press\, 2026). \n\n\n\nAfter living in Switzerland and a decade-long involvement with the Geneva Writers Group\, Marxsen returned to the coast of Maine in 2021. It was here that her professional writing life began in 1989\, when she covered the arts for The Camden Herald. \n\n\n\nBooks will be available for sale from Owl & Turtle!

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:The June 16th session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm eastern on the third Tuesday of the month. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nOn June 16th Greg Fahy will present John Dewey’s views about experience and how our human ability for language impacts our relation to the world. Greg provides this overview: \n\n\n\n“I will give some background on Dewey’s life.  Suffice it to say here that Dewey was arguably the most influential American philosopher in the first half of the 20th century and had influence on the discipline of education as well as social and political philosophy.  In the past\, the Camden Philosophical Society has read sections of his work The Public and its Problems addressing the challenges of forming democratic social institutions.  Dewey is in the pragmatist school of American philosophy and aligns well with philosophers such as Charles Sanders Peirce and William James.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this reading\, we look at Dewey’s account of experience\, which is resolutely anti-dualist\, and distinguishable clearly from the British Empiricist account of experience. And if we are going to begin philosophy in experience\, Dewey thinks it is important to have an account of experience that does not separate us from nature.  He thinks that our everyday language tends to presume separation\, which results in all sorts of philosophical conundrums that can be avoided if we only began with a more accurate and non-dualist account of experience.  In particular\, I think Dewey’s account of experience can respond in meaningful ways to the discussions of alienation and absurdism that we have had recently. ”  \n\n\n\nThis month’s reading will be the revised chapter on p. 31-73 from the second edition of John Dewey’s Experience And Nature\, which can be found here:

Everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nIn the event of rain\, PoeTREE will be held inside in the Camden Public Library’s Picker Room. \n\n\n\nPoeTREE is part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program and will include the planting of a new tree\, along with information about the town’s Tree Program\, which has added more than 100 shade trees to public spaces. \n\n\n\nThe program will also feature live music by Louisa Stancioff and readings of poetry inspired by trees. Community members are invited to participate by reading a favorite tree-related poem or sharing original work. A limited number of reading spots are available; those interested may sign up in advance by emailing samanthaleec@gmail.com. \n\n\n\nThe event highlights Camden’s longstanding commitment to its trees.  Designated a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation since 1996\, Camden has spent more than three decades preserving and enhancing its tree canopy. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, May 1. Tuesdays morning yoga will resume starting Tuesday\, June 16. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. You are welcome to just show up\, but it is recommended to join the email list in case of a scheduling or location change due to weather. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. Donations are suggested with a portion of the proceeds donated directly to Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience.

SUMMARY:Songwriters Coffeehouse Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host its annual Songwriters Coffeehouse on Thursday\, May 28 at 6:00 PM in the Picker Room. The Songwriters Coffeehouse is a tradition at the library going back years\, ever since the library began hosting and encouraging songwriting almost twenty years ago. The evening will feature live music from the musicians of the library’s Songwriters Sessions and in a range of styles and instruments\, from six-string guitar to piano to a cappella\, and a range from singer-songwriter to folk and folk rock. \n\n\n\nLeft to right\, the songwriters are Peter Saladino\, Frank Boscoe\, Ken Gross\, and Carol Graff; and in the front row\, Liz Cunningham and Ellen Berry.\n\n\n\nThere is no charge for admission although donations will be accepted. Coffee\, tea\, and refreshments will be available! Enjoy the music and celebrate continuing the Songwriters Coffeehouse tradition. \n\n\n\nThe songwriters have been meeting regularly all year to share their music and offer support and suggestions to one another\, and are eager to present their new work to the public.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
