SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: On Human Understanding
DESCRIPTION:The October 20th session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn October 20th we will continue our investigations into human understanding\, how we perceive the world and how we come to know what we know. We will use the work of John Locke and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnizt’s as the basis for our discussion.   \n\n\n\nLloyd Gillespie will provide this framework and has provided the following background on these two thinkers – John Locke (1632-1704) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnizt (1646-1716).  Their lifespans overlapped and although they never met they did engage in a significant debate concerning rationalism versus empiricism as a means of acquiring knowledge.  In fact\, Leibnizt’s New Essays on Human Understanding represent his response to John Locke.  Are we born with a certain innate knowledge ?  Or are we indeed a “blank slate” at birth? This dialogue below is perhaps a good summary of the differences between these views:  \n\n\n\nTh (Locke): The human mind at birth is a tabula rasa—a blank sheet of paper\, void of all characters and without any ideas. All our knowledge is founded on and ultimately derives itself from experience and external sensation. \n\n\n\nPh (Leibnitz): I must object to this total emptiness. The soul is born with perception. The debate of a pure tabula rasa is rendered void by the existence of petite perceptions—unconscious\, minute perceptions. Consider a newborn baby. The infant is born with massive perceptual attributes and potential that they do not need to learn. In their petite perceptions\, they already possess an innate familiarity with what they see\, hear\, smell\, taste\, and feel. The soul has motivating\, a priori attributes at birth\, existing as a matrix of potential. The slate is not blank; it is pre-structured to perceive. \n\n\n\nTh (Locke): If an idea is innate\, it must be consciously recognized. How can a soul possess ideas it does not know it has? \n\n\n\nPh (Leibnitz): Because there is a profound mechanical distinction between simple perception and apperception. Perception is merely the internal state of the soul representing the outer world; it is common to all substances\, even animals and plants. Apperception\, however\, is conscious awareness—the reflective attention given to that internal state. It is the mind looking inward at its own operations. \n\n\n\n(The dialogue is from Leibniz’s own original material interpreted by and TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL LATIN\, FRENCH AND GERMAN\, WITH NOTES) \n\n\n\nIn preparation\, please read from the attached link: (page numbers pertain to the pdf numeration)  \n\n\n\nPrimary Reading – pages 64-108 (Book 1 – Innate Ideas). Suggested but not mandatory\, the Preface – pages 41-63. This is the original text and Lloyd recommends to use only this reading as your source since more modern translations differ.  In fact\, you might note a spelling difference for “Leibnizt” (the original) and the more common usage “Leibniz”.  Apparently even Leibnizt varied between the two versions in his signings ! New Essays on Human Understanding \n\n\n\nhttps://archive.org/details/cu31924032296422 \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, please also watch this short clip\, which will provide more background to Leibniz in his time: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8waA7Ma

SUMMARY:Concert: The Tinnitus Brothers\, Saxophone & Bass Jazz Duets
DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes The Tinnitus Brothers for a jazzy concert on Tuesday\, October 20 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room! Free as always. Cozy refreshments included. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBassist Doug Rich and alto saxophonist/guitarist/vocalist Willie Sordillo have been playing together in a wide variety of bands and as a duo for nearly 30 years. Their musical collaborations have included jazz ensembles\, funk and R&B bands\, eclectic groups led by one or the other of them\, pick-up bands\, backing up a James Brown impersonator\, the Marlene Jazz Ensemble\, the Geoffrey Dana Hicks Quartet\, MSQ\, the RPS Band\, Four Corners\, Harmony Grove\, and providing music for hundreds of jazz church services. As the Ballad Project\, they toured the Midwest in 2019\, and with Harmony Grove and as the Tinnitus Brothers\, they accompanied Indiana-based poet Ketu Oladuwa for the Northeast legs of tours in 2024 and 2025. \n\n\n\nThe Tinnitus Brothers’ repertoire draws from both jazz and folk traditions\, and includes well and lesser-known instrumentals from the jazz canon\, original jazz instrumentals\, and original songs with lyrics. In all genres\, their seeming ability to communicate telepathically is the result of their deep friendship and long history of collaboration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWillie Sordillo has been performing professionally for a half century\, working extensively as a freelance player\, a member of diverse bands\, and leading his own ensembles. With the Latin American ensemble\, Flor de Caña\, he is a multiple Boston Music Awards winner. Performing in concerts and festivals throughout North America and internationally\, Willie’s original compositions have appeared in numerous song books\, magazines and college texts and on his own and other artists’ recordings. He has contributed music to several films\, and an arrangement used on the television show ER. He has performed with or opened shows for Pete Seeger\, Ruben Blades\, Kurt Elling\, Richie Havens\, Avery Sharpe and Tito Puente\, among others. He served as Music Director for Jazz Worship at Old South Church in Boston for 18 years and regularly brings jazz to churches throughout Massachusetts as well as playing in a variety of other settings as both a leader and a sideman. Willie has recorded for both the Folkways and Flying Fish record labels\, and his solo albums are now distributed by the Smithsonian Institution. \n\n\n\nDoug Rich has varied and extensive experience as a bassist in several musical genres including jazz\, gospel\, and R&B. He has held the bass chair for jazz musicians such as tenor player Ray Felder and gospel groups like the Voices of Myrtle. He was the bassist for the house band at Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton\, MA for over 20 years\, and played regularly at the weekly Jazz Worship service hosted by Old South Church in Boston. He is the bassist in the eclectic quartet Harmony Grove\, led by Willie Sordillo and vocalist Zoë Krohne. Doug is the founder and leader of the fusion project\, the RPS Band. A cum laude graduate of Berklee College of Music\, Doug has had the honor of working with legends such as Lionel Hampton and as an opening act for the Winans with Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

SUMMARY:Executive Director Networking
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow nonprofit executive directors for an afternoon of informal\, drop-in networking at Camden Public Library. Contact Kristy Kilfoyle at kkilfoyle@librarycamden.org with any questions. \n\n\n\nHandicapped parking available along Atlantic Avenue.
