DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes poet\, professor\, and translator Sandra Lynn Hutchinson to share her recently published translation of A Tale of Love: More Prison Poems by Baháʼí prisoner of conscience Mahvash Sabet. This program will take place on Tuesday\, June 16 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nWhat is a life of courage? The prison poems of Mahvash Sabet answer this question… \n\n\n\n“My pen’s broken/ and it’s not in my hand./ They took my voice/as a spoil of oppression…”  — so PEN Pinter Writer of Courage and longtime prisoner of conscience Mahvash Sabet wrote from the depths of Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. What does it take to survive a twenty-year-long prison sentence as a poet who is a member of a persecuted minority? How do you write when you have no pen or paper? Come and listen to Mahvash’s Sabet’s testimony about a life of letters lived against all odds\, as set down in her second book of prison poems\, A Tale of Love\, translated from Persian to English by Dr. Sandra Lynn Hutchison of Orono and Shahin Mowzoon\, with an introduction by the 2023 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize\, Narges Mohammadi. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP below to save your seat! \n\n\n\nHutchinson writes in her introduction: “It is hard to imagine a more consequential body of poetry than that which a skilled craftsperson might produce from within the confines of a prison cell. And\, without doubt\, the poems of Mahvash Sabet speak more powerfully than any other form of advocacy could ever hope to of the anguish suffered as well as the victories won in the course of an unjust imprisonment.” \n\n\n\n\n\nFill out my LGL Form!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHutchinson continues: “In A Tale of Love\, her second volume of poems\, Mahvash Sabet\, a Baháʼí imprisoned for practicing her faith in the Islamic Republic of Iran\, bears witness to the horrors and hard-won triumphs of life in an Iranian prison\, where she has been forced to work out her own salvation in the most solitary way: by setting down her thoughts and experiences in poetry. \n\n\n\n“Readers with the courage to enter the world of Sabet’s prison cell… will be amply rewarded by the powerful testimony her poems give of the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra Lynn Hutchison is the author of a books of poetry\, as well as numerous essays and articles. Her translation\, with Shahin Mowzoon\, of Mahvash Sabet’s second volume of prison poems\, A Tale of Love\, was published in 2024. \n\n\n\nHutchison holds a Ph.D. in English literature\, with a specialization in modern poetry\, from the University of Toronto. She has taught at universities in Canada\, Hong Kong\, China\, India\, and the United States\, most recently at the University of Maine.  \n\n\n\nHutchison has been the recipient of various academic recognitions and literary awards\, including a Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship\, an Emily Dickinson Poetry Award\, and a Jane Kenyon Poetry Fellowship from Bennington College. She lives in Orono\, Maine\, where she teaches scriptural exegesis and mentors writers in courses she offers through the Wilmette Institute. She also serves as faculty for the BIHE (Bahá’í Institute for Higher Education)\, an online university in which she teaches journalism and storytelling to Bahá’í youth who are banned from attending public universities in Iran. She is the founder and editor of elixir-journal.org\, an online journal of the arts.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am through October. In July\, yoga will also be held on Mondays and Thursdays at 7:45 am. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. You are welcome to just show up\, but it is recommended to join the email list in case of a scheduling or location change due to weather. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Yoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, May 1. Tuesdays morning yoga will resume starting Tuesday\, June 16. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to get on Denyse’s email list\, please text her at 207-975-5325 or email at denyserobinson@gmail.com. You are welcome to just show up\, but it is recommended to join the email list in case of a scheduling or location change due to weather. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. Neither could her brother\, Kent\, have foreseen his bitter retreat from Dunkirk when he left England in January 1940 to fight in France\, or his subsequent service on the frontlines in Cornwall\, North Africa\, Sicily\, and Burma. \n\n\n\nIn January of 1939 when British film star Barbara Greene met Joseph P. Lawrence grew up in New York City and Washington D.C.\, then earned a BA in anthropology from Bennington College\, an MA in sociology from New York University\, and an EdD in Administration\, Policy and Planning from Boston University. \n\n\n\nIn addition to teaching\, Lawrence has worked for the Department of Social Services and the Housing Development Administration in New York\, directed a small museum in Maine\, co-run a brokerage and construction company\, consulted for the Rural School and Community Trust and KnowledgeWorks\, and started four non-profit organizations supporting the environment and students. She lives in Maine and is working on the third novel in her Islands series.

These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!

SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor June 1\, Coté will read aloud from E. E. Cummings’ A Life. \n\n\n\nCummings\, in his radical experimentation with form\, punctuation\, spelling\, and syntax\, created a new kind of poetic expression.  \n\n\n\nBecause of his powerful work\, he became a generation’s beloved heretic—at the time of his death he was one of the most widely read poets in the United States.  \n\n\n\nIn this rich\, illuminating biography\, Susan Cheever traces the development of the poet and his work. She takes us from Cummings’s seemingly idyllic childhood in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, through his years at Harvard (rooming with Dos Passos\, befriending Malcolm Cowley and Lincoln Kirstein).  \n\n\n\nThere\, he devoured the poetry of Ezra Pound\, whose radical verses lured the young writer away from the politeness of the traditional nature poem towards a more adventurous\, sexually conscious form.  \n\n\n\nThe biography follows Cummings to Paris in 1917\, and\, finally\, to Greenwich Village to be among other modernist poets of the day—Marianne Moore and Hart Crane\, among them.  \n\n\n\nE. E.
