The author shares herjourney\, emphasizing spontaneous decision-making and the creation of dynamic learning environments. \n\n\n\nHighlighting the Magic Formula for class satisfaction and the role of games in solving problems\, this guide inspires educators\, parents\, and learners to embrace an educational approach that fosters creativity and individual expression. It presents practical advice on designing curriculums that respond to students’ queries and passions\, making every learning experience enriching and tailored. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLaurie Block Spigel homeschooled her two sons in New York City\, where she created the website HomeschoolNYC.com and taught popular classes to homeschoolers. Laurie has lectured at alternative education conferences\, written articles and published the HomeschoolNYC newsletter. Her book\, Education Uncensored: A Guide for the Aspiring\, the Foolhardy and the Disillusioned (2006)\, part memoir and part homeschooling guide\, explains what’s wrong with America’s educational system. Laurie lives with her husband and cat in Maine not far from her younger son and daughter-in-law\, where she writes\, teaches\, and advocates for homeschooling and game-based\, personalized education.

DESCRIPTION:Do robots with high-level Artificial Intelligence have “moral standing\,” and what does it mean in terms of rights and responsibilities if they do? These are questions the Camden Philosophical Society will explore at its Tuesday\, Sep. 17 session – the second in its series of deep dives into ethical and philosophical issues raised by the development of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). \n\n\n\nThe Society’s Sep. 17 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nReadings\n\n\n\nThe gathering will start with viewing of a portion of an episode from the television series Star Trek: Next Generation\, in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard argues before a tribunal that the robot known as Data has moral standing and should not be dismantled\, as a scientist is proposing to do. People are usually considered to have responsibilities as well as rights. Thank you! \n\n\n\nWe welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Indoor Yoga Flow Class with Denyse
DESCRIPTION:Now there’s yoga at the library all year long! Denyse Robinson leads an all-levels yoga flow class on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Picker Room. Bring your own mat if you have one\, although Denyse will have a few extras as well as blocks and straps. \n\n\n\nWe begin each class with breathwork\, meditation\, and setting the intention to connect with our higher selves\, the Earth and one another. \n\n\n\nWe typically commence the flow with some sun salutations\, and then move to standing poses\, balance poses\, and then seated poses into final relaxation. This Flow class is linked with the breath so that each movement corresponds with an inhale and an exhale and is a new and varied sequence of yoga poses each class.

Courtesy of Peter Roberts.\n\n\n\nJoin us for the first program of Discovery History Month on Tuesday\, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room featuring Maine State Archivist Kate McBrien. \n\n\n\nIn 1912\, the State of Maine evicted a community of African American and white residents from their homes on Malaga Island. Racism\, economic struggles\, and eugenics all led to the devastation of this community.  \n\n\n\nThe program will explore the history behind this story that was hidden for so many years.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nKate McBrien serves as the Maine State Archivist\, overseeing the archival preservation and management of state records at the Maine State Archives in Augusta. Before this role\, Kate worked at the Maine Historical Society and Maine State Museum in their curatorial and public engagement departments. DESCRIPTION:Falmouth Hurricane\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, October 3\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. \n\n\n\nDr. Kerry Emanuel\, emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, will present on the long and interesting history of hurricanes that have affected Maine. Emanuel will also talk about recent scientific advances that show us how hurricane risk is changing in midcoast Maine\, as well as destructive winter storms that have plagued us in recent times. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place both in-person and on Zoom. His specialty is hurricane physics and he was the first to investigate how long-term climate change might affect hurricane activity. \n\n\n\nEmanuel is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers\, and three books\, including Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes\, published by Oxford University Press and aimed at a general audience\, and What We Know about Climate Change\, published by the MIT Press and now in its third edition. DESCRIPTION:The book shed is closed on October 1 and 8\, before and after the book sale. Please do not bring donations on these days. Thank you! \n\n\n\nWe welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. Bathing suits not necessary! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAmy Hopkins will share her story that led to the creation of Saltwater Mountain Company –– a business that highlights the science and magic of cold-water dipping and its timely impact on women’s empowerment\, mental health and community.  \n\n\n\nInspired by experience\, research\, and her “Dip Down to Rise Up” movement\, Amy will educate on the how\, why\, and when of a cold-water dipping practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Hopkins has dedicated her entire career to supporting women’s health. With her collective experience as birthing nurse\, massage therapist\, entrepreneur and community leader\, Amy inspires with heart\, humor and hope. Creating safe spaces and experiences where women are encouraged to trust themselves is Amy’s superpower.

SUMMARY:Philosophical Society: A.I. and the Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:What will the future of “work” look like? What part does work play in our psychological well being? What constitutes meaningful work? These are some of the questions the Camden Philosophical Society will address on Oct. 15\, at the third session in a series of discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The group discussed generative AI in August and September\, focusing on the technology itself\, the ethics and the philosophical quandaries this new technology raises. \n\n\n\nThe October session will highlight the impacts on work. Each of the articles for this session puts forward a different view on this topic and\, together\, they encourage us to take a step back from the “technology” itself and instead explore our own concepts of work and its meaning in a rapidly changing technological society.   \n\n\n\nThe Society’s meeting on Tuesday\, Oct. 15\, will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start with the short Prologue by Hannah Arendt to The Human Condition (attached as a PDF). Arendt frames our discussion by questioning how the advancement of technology will impact our relationship to work and potentially to each other. Overall\, she asks us to “think about what we are doing” as our world and the choices we must make become increasingly complex.  \n\n\n\nOur next reading takes a closer look at what makes work meaningful. This community outreach event takes place on Tuesday\, October 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library\, as well as on Zoom. This event is intended for all ages. Refreshments and activities for families will be provided. \n\n\n\nPeter Slovinsky of the Maine Geological Survey will outline the challenges at hand and Blake Sanborn\, Todd Richardson and Todd Coffin\, from Richardson & Associates/WSP\, will give an introduction to the Town of Camden’s resilience planning initiative. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for the livestream on Zoom\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCamden was awarded its third Community Resilience Partnership Community Action Grant by the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future (GOPIF) over a year ago to help fund resilience planning for Camden’s Inner Harbor. \n\n\n\nThe select board awarded the contract (07/02/24 meeting) to Richardson & Associates/WSP to develop a harbor resilience roadmap in partnership with the Camden community. Their work will be based on current and projected sea-level rise and storm surge data. \n\n\n\nThis Oct. 15 event is the first of a fall/winter series of public meetings/workshops. This session is intended to provide background on the project\, preliminary site analysis\, and an outline for the community-based planning process. We encourage all Camden residents to participate in the process to create a resilient Camden. The evening will be recorded.

Hear about the old roads\, the Civilian Conservation Corps\, the ski trails\, the horse rental era\, construction of the multi-use\, other changes to the system\, and our current focus. \n\n\n\nErik Brooks will lead a discussion of trail history from pre-park days to more recent times with a panel of other Camden Hills State Park experts. \n\n\n\nCome to learn\, or join in the discussion! If you have lived here awhile and frequented or worked in the park through some of its changes\, we’d love your participation and insights! Come to swap stories or just to listen.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrails Supervisor Erik Brooks is enthusiastic about trail improvements but values understanding a trail’s history. From Harpswell\, Maine\, he visited the park occasionally in his youth\, but relies on Camden Herald digitized archives and the stories of older locals to learn about his workplace. Between the two sources he has found some intriguing stories and characters. Led by John Lennon Award-winning songwriter Sumner\, the string band’s dynamic sound showcases bold chord progressions\, unforgettable stories\, and mesmerizing musicianship from fiddler Kat Wallace and bassist Mike Siegel. DESCRIPTION:Into the Ether: Life\, Death and the Illusion of Choice  \n\n\n\nThe Extraordinary Life and Death of Kate Banks \n\n\n\nwith Amy Banks\, MD and Nancy Banks\, PhD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library warmly welcomes Amy Banks\, MD and Nancy Banks\, PhD\, for an exploration of the life\, death and wisdom of their sister Kate Banks\, a prolific children’s book author\, energy healer\, wife\, mother\, sister\, daughter\, aunt… and poet. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Picker Room on Saturday\, October 26\, at 3:00 p.m. There will be refreshments available as well as copies of Into the Ether by Kate Banks for sale. Free and open to all. \n\n\n\nKate Banks\, award winning children’s book author\, “chose” to end her life by voluntary assisted death on February 24\, 2024\, ending a two-year odyssey with stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer. Kate believed death was an extension of life\, a transition that all living beings experience. \n\n\n\nDuring Kate’s battle with cancer\, she began writing poetry seriously. She described her creative process as channeling universal energies and wisdom onto the page. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes author Amy Fradel for a talk about her book Four Acres Under Slavnik: A Slovenian Migration Story on Tuesday\, October 29\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nWhat began as a personal exploration of Fradel’s family’s immigrant history became a deep dive into global issues surrounding immigration\, racism\, and the rise of authoritarian regimes that the world still grapples with today.  \n\n\n\nIt is also an intimate story of ordinary people facing the challenges of life in the new country and of those striving to survive in the old country during cataclysmic times. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nA traveler\, nurse practitioner\, and writer\, Amy Fradel lives in Maine with her husband\, Arch Davis\, and visits with her extended family in Slovenia often. She is the 2022 winner of the Slovenian Union of America Literary Competition. She recently presented her book to the Slovenian Migration Institute in Ljubljana\, as well as at the Universities of Primorska and Nova Gorica. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the Camden Public Library’s “Discover History Month” series of history-themed programs\, events\, and exhibits.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial thank you to our Discover History Month sponsor\, The Smiling Cow. SUMMARY:All Hallow's Eve Spooky Sound Bath in the Amphitheatre
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Doble on a wide assortment of large gongs and Forest Weston on didgeridoo as well as Maleine for a special\, outdoor\, nighttime\, eerie sonic experience to celebrate the season. This spooky sound bathing session will take place on Thursday\, October 31\, at 6:00 PM in the Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nOn All Hallow’s Eve we will be bathing the Amphitheatere in mystical sound to help transport you on an inner journey. Think of this as sonic meditation\, best experienced in a very relaxed position with closed eyes. We will use Gongs\, Didgeridoo\, Chimes\, Voice\, and other mysterious devices to invite transportation betwixt realms! \n\n\n\nBring something comfy to lay or sit on and plenty of warm layers and blankets to ward off the chill (and ghouls!). This is a free event with optional donation greatly appreciated\, to be split with the Library. \n\n\n\nOptional Registration highly recommended so that we can contact you in case of changes due to weather\, etc. here: Register  \n\n\n\n Contact Jim Doble at jim@elementaldesign.me  for questions.

Featured pieces include those created by adult students in oil painting\, watercolor\, pottery\, sewing\, paper craft\, and woodworking classes. Five Town Adult Ed was founded in 1969 as the first adult education program in Maine\, and many of the students and teachers have been participating in or teaching art classes for over 30 years as a part of this inspiring community.
