SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Of Cod and Communities" by Linda Buckmaster
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is pleased to host the exhibit “Of Cod and Communities” by Linda Buckmaster for the month of August in the Picker Room Gallery. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, August 3 at 4 p.m.\, Linda will give a half hour “tour” of the banners to offer an overview of the project of adapting her book “off the page.” She will comment on the content\, and explain the process for choosing and using the over 30 images. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is adapted from Linda’s book Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands\, a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. For the exhibit Buckmaster collaborated with Portland designer Lori Harley to create eight 3′ x 5′ soft fabric banners printed with text and images. They are designed to hang in community spaces such as libraries to reflect the centuries-long interrelationships between the North Atlantic cod and humans.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit is traveling to coastal libraries over the year. Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport is a co-sponsor of the exhibit\, which is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission\, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nLinda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life\, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She is former Gulf and Atlantic Editor for “National Fisherman.” Her poetry\, essay\, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her memoir\, Space Heart. A Memoir in Stages\, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her hybrid\, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press 2022) was a Finalist in the Maine Literary Awards. Her traveling banners exhibit adapted from Elemental\, “Of Cod and Communities\,” is in libraries along the coast this year\, and will be at the Bangor Library in October and November.

SUMMARY:Public event: "Water Privatization: A Dilemma for Maine Communities" with Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice\, and the Maine State Water Commission
DESCRIPTION:Nativity Lutheran Church‘s Creation Care Team presents the first event in their series of talks called Turn On the Taps: Ensuring Clean Water For All. On Saturday\, August 3 at 10:30 AM in the Picker Room\, Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice and the Maine State Water Commission will lead a conversation about local water rights in Maine. \n\n\n\nArtwork by Emily Van Brocklin Royal.\n\n\n\nNickie Sekera is the co-founder of Community Water Justice\, a decentralized network of people working for strong water protections at the community level across Wabanakiyik (Maine). She is a founding board member of the Saco Headwaters Alliance\, Fryeburg Water District Trustee\, and in 2022 was appointed by the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives to the Commission to Study the Role of Water as a Resource in Maine. \n\n\n\nSekera is also a journalist with Sunlight Media Collective\, a collective of Indigenous and non=indigenous journalists\, media makers and advocates\, centering the stories and experiences of Wabanaki people. \n\n\n\nIn the years leading up to these roles\, Nickie worked as an administrator of a wilderness medicine school for 18 years after working alongside Indigenous-led remote medical clinics and education projects within the conflict zones of Eastern Burma (Myanmar). Her work in that region led to serving on the Board of Directors of the US Campaign for Burma in Washington\, D.C.\, doing human rights and environmental justice advocacy. Most invaluably\, Nickie is a mother of a son who joins her in this work. Nickie’s son\, Luke\, plans to be present with her for this presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Water Justice is a network of front-line struggles in Maine determined to secure rights and accessibility to clean groundwater through education and action for future generations. The FREE concert takes place on Tuesday\, August 13\, at 6:30 p.m. Rain location inside the library. \n\n\n\nRenowned for their diverse playlist\, Anni and the Rainmakers seamlessly blend original songs with classic rock\, soul\, blues\, and R&B numbers. This eclectic mix sets the stage for unforgettable live experiences and has earned them accolades\, such as being voted Waldo County’s Number One Band by The Republican Journal and the Village Soup’s prestigious “Best of the Best” survey three years in a row. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAt the forefront of the group is the incredibly talented lead singer\, Ann Brindle. With a background that includes Virginia bands After Six\, Front Page News\, and The Groove\, Ann possesses a remarkable vocal range that allows her to deliver exceptional performances\, ranging from the powerful tunes of Janis Joplin to the soulful ballads of Whitney Houston. \n\n\n\nSupporting Ann’s dynamic vocals is her husband\, Barry Brindle\, a gifted guitarist who honed his craft in the popular Connecticut group Biggio Sound before being joined by Ann in The Groove. Together\, they formed the local favorite acoustic duo\, Jonesville\, which was also voted as Waldo County’s Number One band\, solidifying their status as a leading musical force in the area. \n\n\n\nCompleting the Rainmakers rhythm section are two talented musicians. Drummer Tim Woitowitz hails from New York City. After relocated to Maine\, Tim went on to collaborate with various bands\, including Steel Rail Express\, Between Dead Stations\, Memphis Lightning\, and The Juke Rockets. Tim collaborated on The Juke Rockets’ first studio album\, “Hungry Soul\,” recorded at Sunset House Studios. \n\n\n\nSean Oxton is Anni and the Rainmakers newest member. Sean is a highly skilled bass player who has made a name for himself in the local music scene. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public library welcomes journalist and author Susan Kellam for a book talk and discussion about her newly-released memoir\, Brilliant Disguise. This event will take place on Thursday\, August 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room.  \n\n\n\nAbout Brilliant Disguise\n\n\n\nAfter their nuclear family exploded into a vaporous mushroom cloud\, the two siblings could only\, as Bert the Turtle jingled in civil-defense cartoons\, duck and cover. The young Susan basked in her brother Robert’s glow. Teachers singled her out because\, certainly\, the little sister would excel too. But how could she ever reach their expectations? Instead\, she rebelled\, chose the wrong men\, drank and took drugs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan talked her way into a job at Rolling Stone magazine in 1976. Three years later\, as an organizer of five nights of No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden with Bruce Springsteen\, Bonnie Raitt\, and many more\, she got snared in the rock politics scramble and her brother saved her. The Obama administration tapped her to edit the Economic Report of the President for the four years of his second term; the Biden administration did the same for his first year. Susan was a contributing writer on the book\, How Ten Global Cities Take on Homelessness (May 2021\, University of California Press). Come join in a discussion with the Camden Philosophical Society on Tuesday\, Aug. 20.  Over the coming months\, the Society will be delving into ethical and philosophical issues raised by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The introductory August session will focus on the varying definitions applied to terms used in discussing AI\, and also on the practical and ethical concerns raised by the different modes of advanced AI and their likely future combination.   \n\n\n\nThe next meeting will take place on Tuesday\, August 20\, at 3:30 – 5:30 PM EDT. We link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience. \n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and run throughout the summer until September 6. SUMMARY:"Water is My Inspiration" Photography & Artist Book Exploration with Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:Sue Michlovitz will discuss the genesis of and reasoning behind her photographs made in the natural world. Both water and trees are characters in her work and act as her inspirations. Demonstrations of her images will be through projection and sample prints. Attendees can expect some interactive parts during the evening. She also will talk about and show her 2023 fine artist book Breathe in Water. \n\n\n\nThis book is held in the Hirsch Library of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and in the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections (Deluxe Edition). A review of Breathe in Water by Tim Anderson of Shadow & Light Magazine stated: “This is not simply a book\, it is a singular piece of art” \n\n\n\nSue will end the evening presentation with a book signing. 10% of sales will be donated to the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz is a Camden based visual artist\, engaged in photography\, artist books and mixed media. She is inspired by sights that may go unseen and subjects found in nature that have both components of realism and abstraction. \n\n\n\nShe has shown her art through the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Photoville (Winchester\, MA)\, Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME)\,  The Parsonage Gallery (Searsport\, ME)\,  Michael Good Gallery\, Rockport Public Library\, and Zoot Coffee.  Her work has also been been in exhibitions in Portland\, ME at the Maine Jewish Museum\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and Cove Street Arts. \n\n\n\nShe immersed into the studies of photography and book arts following a 45+year career as a physical therapy clinician and professor. Michlovitz holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Hahnemann University (now Drexel)\, Philadelphia\, PA and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Maine Media College. DESCRIPTION:Amy Thomas\, Restoration Ecologist\, Wild Ones Midcoast Maine Program Chair\, MSW\, MNRD\, will present  “Ecological Principles to Create Aesthetically Beautiful Wildlife Habitat Using Native Plants – No Matter Your Garden Size” in the Picker Room on Thursday\, September 5\, at 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll begin with a brief overview of the ecological and environmental benefits and importance of using native plants in landscapes and gardens. This presentation is geared to any size yard or property\, urban or rural.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore the differences between “cultivars\,” “nativars” and “true native” plants\, and each of their possible potential impacts on pollinators and wildlife.   \n\n\n\n\n\nNext we’ll identify some basic alternative native species which make transitioning portions of your garden to natives easy. The native species in this section have been selected for their visual characteristics\, bloom time\, and foliage shapes often seen in locally used cultivars\, but possess pollinator and wildlife enhancing qualities cultivars lack. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss local nursery sources for safely grown\, genetically diverse native plants\, and have some time for Q&A.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!
