SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Ivan Illich
DESCRIPTION:As a continuation of its exploration of human relationships to place and to each other\, the Camden Philosophical Society on Tuesday\, April 15\, will discuss selected readings from mid-20th Century philosopher and social critic Ivan Illich – an Austrian priest with Dalmatian roots who spent substantial parts of his life in Mexica\, the US\, and Germany. Illich provides a somewhat more controversial and\, in many ways\, less compromising analysis of the crisis in modern society than others whose works the society has read and discussed recently. \n\n\n\nThe April 15 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nIn Illich’s view\, the industrialization/bureaucratization of tools has undermined our ability to exist sustainably within our environment. By tools\, Illich includes everything from power tools\, automobiles\, and airplanes to schools\, hospitals\, and language. For him\, these tools (industrialized/bureaucratized) imprison\, rather than liberate us. We work for them instead of them working for or with us. From birth to death\, we move along the conveyor belt of predetermined inputs that stifle our creative approaches to solving the contemporary problems that\, by the way\, modern society has both defined and created. Problems such as loneliness\, poverty\, and pollution\, to name a few. \n\n\n\nIllich’s alternative to the industrial/bureaucratic path is the “convivial.” To implement this change\, he calls for the replacement of industrial/bureaucratic tools with “tools for conviviality.” \n\n\n\nIn order to explore how Illich defined the coming crisis and what he meant by tools for conviviality\, we will base our discussion on the first 15 pages of Section II (Convivial Reconstruction\, pp. 23-37)\, and Section V (Political Inversion\, pp. 115-125) of his book Tools for Conviviality (1975). SUMMARY:"How Do Novels Find Their Form?" In Conversation with Cynthia Reeves and Carla Spataro
DESCRIPTION:Join Cynthia Reeves\, author of The Last Whaler and Falling Through the New World\, with Carla Spataro\, author of More Strange Than True at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday\, April 15\, at 6:30 PM for a conversation about novel writing. They will discuss why they chose to tell their stories in the way they did. Did the “form” come before the writing\, or did it follow after the drafting was underway? All are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Cynthia Reeves\n\n\n\n\nA writer and poet for almost thirty years\, Cynthia Reeves was honored with Miami University Press’s novella prize\, and residencies at Hawthornden Castle\, Vermont Studio Center\, Galleri Svalbard\, and the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College. Her novels The Last Whaler and Falling Through the New World are both finalists in Literary Fiction for the Foreword INDIES awards. \n\n\n\n\n\nFalling Through the New World is a novel in stories that spans a century\, from World War I Italy to modern-day America. The collection comprises fourteen stories. The eponymous piece\, “Falling Through the New World\,” traces the experiences of a young married couple—Anna and Vincenzo Desiderio—as they negotiate the impact of the Great War on their lives. “La Dolentissima Madre” follows the parallel journeys of Anna and her mother as they grapple with their sister/daughter dying of the Spanish flu. “Sign Language” reaches back into the Desiderios’ family history as Anna and Vincenzo’s daughter\, Rose\, grapples with her father’s desire to reunite with his dead wife. And in the final story\, “All This the Heart Ordains\,” Kate returns to Italy after her mother’s death to seek out an understanding of Rose’s deep commitment to her Catholic faith. \n\n\n\n\n\nSvalbard. Midsummer’s Eve\, 1937. Astrid’s body cupped in mine\, I clasp my arms around her waist. Our pulses coursing together through our skin\, I enter her from behind. This was the beginning of our undoing. \n\n\n\nSo observes Tor Handeland in The Last Whaler\, an elegiac meditation on the will to survive under extreme conditions. Tor\, a whaler\, and his wife\, Astrid\, a botanist specializing in Arctic flora\, are stranded during the dark season of 1937-38 at his remote whaling station on Svalbard when they misjudge ice conditions and fail to rendezvous with the ship meant to carry them back to their home in southern Norway. Beyond enduring the Arctic winter’s twenty-four-hour night\, the couple must cope with the dangers of polar bears\, violent storms\, and bitter cold as well as Astrid’s unexpected pregnancy.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Carla Spataro\n\n\n\n\nCarla\, or C. J.\, Spataro is an award winning short story writer who directs the MFA in Creative Writing and MA in Publishing programs at Rosemont College in suburban Philadelphia. She was also one of the founding partners of Philadelphia Stories magazine and PS Books. She recently published her debut novel\, More Strange Than True. \n\n\n\n\n\nJewell Jamieson unknowingly eats a meal spiked with magic and makes a sloppy drunken wish. When Jewell awakes the next morning\, she discovers her beloved dog Oberon is gone and\, in his place\, (in her bed) is a beautiful naked man. Things get complicated when Titania\, the impulsive Queen of the Faeries\, decides she wants Oberon for herself. Is Oberon simply a man who used to be a dog\, or is he somehow something more? When Jewell discovers the answer\, she will be faced with a devastating choice. Will she choose to save the man she’s grown to love by giving him up\, or will she honor his wishes and watch him die?  \n\n\n\nSet in contemporary Philadelphia\, More Strange Than True can be best described as a mash-up of literary fiction and grounded fantasy in the vein of Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic or Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus – and there’s lots of Shakespeare. The novel takes some of its characters (and its title) from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other characters are pulled from Greek Mythology and Goethe’s poem “The Elf King.”

DESCRIPTION:Eastern Whip-poor-will\n\n\n\nThe Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, April 17\, at 6:30 PM for a presentation on nightjar monitoring efforts in Maine\, with Maine Natural History Observatory ecologist Logan Parker. \n\n\n\nThis program will take place in person at the library and all are welcome. Light refreshments provided! \n\n\n\nWe will learn about the natural history of Maine’s nightjars (Eastern Whip-poor-will and Common Nighthawk)\, the threats they face\, and how you can take part in exciting monitoring efforts through the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project. \n\n\n\nThe Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project is a multifaceted research effort working to support nightjar research in Maine and beyond. This project is comprised of both citizen science monitoring and intensive research efforts focused on nesting and movement ecology. It was launched in response to reports of widespread declines in Eastern Whip-poor-wills and Common Nighthawks throughout their eastern breeding ranges. Suspected declines in Maine evidenced by extensive anecdotal observations led to both the Eastern Whip-poor-will and Common Nighthawk being listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLogan Parker is an ecologist and the founder of the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project. In 2017\, Logan initiated this grassroots\, citizen-science driven effort when he first learned of declining nightjar populations in New England. He graduated from Unity College with a Masters in Sustainable Natural Resource Management focused on bird monitoring and conservation. In 2020\, Logan co-founded the Global Nightjar Network to form partnerships with other nightjar monitoring efforts around the world. He recently supported the Maine Bird Atlas (2018 – 2022) by coordinating and participating the project’s special species projects.  \n\n\n\nWhen not out looking for nightjars\, Logan enjoys birding\, wildlife photography\, writing\, gardening\, reading\, and working with his wife\, Hallee\, on their off-grid home in the woods of Waldo County\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Open Community Conversation About Montgomery Dam and Waterfall (Non-Library Public Event)
DESCRIPTION:Although this event is taking place at Camden Public Library\, it is not a library program. However\, this event is free and open to the public and all are welcome. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to a Community Conversation on Montgomery Dam and Waterfall on two upcoming Sundays\, March 30 and April 27\, at 2:00 pm each day in the Picker Room. This event is put on by Camden’s Save the Dam Falls Committee and is not a library program. \n\n\n\nThe sessions will be modeled on previous “conversations” on civic issues in Camden. Each event will begin with an informative slide show containing an overview of the Megunticook River and a visual history of the Montgomery Dam.  The conversations about Montgomery Dam will be presented by Camden’s Save the Dam Falls Committee\, a group of citizens organized for the purpose of raising awareness of the beauty\, value\, and legacy of the waterfall and Montgomery Dam\, and dedicated to giving the citizens of Camden a chance to discuss and to vote on the future of Montgomery Dam. The committee has been gathering information and sharing it over the more than three years since the committee was formed. \n\n\n\nThe slide talk will include an illustrated timeline of the construction of the dam and discuss its place in the history and legacy of Camden. It will also address the natural history\, geology\, and other issues related to this focal point where the River Meets the Sea. The slide presentation will be followed by questions and comments from the audience.   \n\n\n\nConstruction of Montgomery Dam in the winter of 1931 as part of the landscaping for Harbor Park. SUMMARY:Maine's First Ship: 1607 Pinnace 'Virginia' with Matt Blazek
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Blazek\, Director of Educational Operations with Maine’s First Ship\, for a fascinating presentation about the 1607 pinnace Virginia\, the history of the Popham Colony\, and the Bath-based nonprofit’s reconstruction of the ship as an educational and community project. This program will take place on Tuesday\, April 29\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. All are welcome! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe pinnace Virginia was the first English ocean-going ship built in the Americas.  It was built in 1607-1608 at the Popham Colony’s Fort St George located near the mouth of the Kennebec River. Virginia was built to aid in coastal exploration and fishing\, but was repurposed when the colony was abandoned in October 1608 and was used to return some of the colonists to England.  The building of Virginia was the beginning of Maine’s 400 year tradition of quality shipbuilding.  \n\n\n\nMaine’s First Ship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that strives to use their reconstruction of the 1607 pinnace Virginia to immerse the public in an exploration of the region’s early history\, craftsmanship\, and relationships\, and their impact on our community and environment today. The 51 foot reconstruction of the Virginia as built by a crew of volunteers in and around the Bath Freight Shed and meets Coast Guard requirements allowing it to be used as a floating classroom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by once again featuring a month-long exhibit from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. Join us in celebrating our maritime heritage!

SUMMARY:"The Buzz On Native Plants" Film and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library\, Native Gardens of Blue Hill\, and Wild Ones Midcoast Maine join together to present a film screening of The Buzz on Native Plants on Thursday\, May 1\, at 6:00 p.m. (SIX o’clock!) in person in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nThe film explores the relationship between native plants and pollinators and how they can benefit local ecosystems in our ever changing climate. The goal of the film is to raise awareness about the importance of biodiverse native ecosystems in our ever changing climate. The film will be followed by a lively panel discussion of local experts\, including Cathy Rees\, who appears in the movie. All are welcome and light refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\n\nPanelist Bios\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCathy Rees studied environmental design and ecology and has worked in parks\, forests and in the landscaping business for most of her life. She is the Executive Director and co-founder of Native Gardens of Blue Hill\, founded 2016\, and is the Author of Winterland: Create a Beautiful Garden for Every Season. She is a featured public speaker and has written numerous newspaper and magazine articles and has contributed to radio programs and podcasts as well as the movie\, The Buzz On Native Plants. \n\n\n\nDr. Roger Rittmaster is a retired endocrinologist and an avid nature photographer\, focusing on plants\, insects and underwater photography.  He moved to Maine fourteen years ago to pursue his hobbies (nature photography\, land conservation\, woodworking and tennis).  He loves to travel\, especially to exotic places where he can photograph uncommon species.  Shortly after moving to Maine\, he authored the book\, Butterflies Up Close: A Guide to Butterfly Photography.  Roger is a Maine Master Naturalist\, former Maine Entomological Society Vice-President\, former Chair of the Camden Conservation Commission and former Member of the Board of Coastal Mountains Land Trust.  \n\n\n\nLouisa Crane studied Environmental Studies at Wellesley College\, where she worked for Wellesley’s Paulson Ecology of Place Initiative for two years following graduation. She is now a Program Development Specialist at Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District\, where she helps local residents\, landowners\, farmers\, schools\, municipalities\, contractors\, land trusts and other land managers learn about and implement conservation practices. She enjoys sharing her excitement about native plants with others—as well as educating people about the problems caused by invasive plants. She grew up in Warren\, Maine and feels lucky to be doing this work in a place with which she feels so connected. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Thomas is a restoration ecologist with a master’s in ecological restoration and native rangeland management\, she’s worked on properties a few square feet to 25\,000 acres\, preserving and enhancing biodiversity for wildlife. She is the Co-Founder of Wild Ones Midcoast Maine\, technical advisor to the Camden Garden Club’s first native plant garden\, Founder of the Camden Native Plant Sale & Celebration\, and owner of Keystone Native Habitat & Landscape. Her former property has been featured on PBS TV and YouTube. She is a public speaker\, and is an advisor to the Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation for island ecology. She considers it a privilege and honor to live and play in the wilds of Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is put on in partnership with Camden Public Library\, Wild Ones Midcoast Maine\, and Native Gardens of Blue Hill.

Thank you for understanding!  \n\n\n\nCamden Public Library warmly welcomes award-winning author Natalie Dykstra\, for a book talk on her latest title\, Chasing Beauty: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner. There will be book sales\, thanks to Arctic Tern Books in Rockland\, and a signing session with the author to follow. This event will take place in the library’s beautiful and historic Reading Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you have received confirmation of your registration\, please note: \n\n\n\n\nFor the event\, enter the library from the Atlantic Avenue entrance and take the stairs or the elevator to the third floor Reading Room. The other entrance to the Reading Room will be locked. Names will be checked upon entry to the Reading Room to ensure those who are pre-registered get first serve on seats. \n\n\n\nARRIVE EARLY! This event is very full\, and there is a long waitlist. Those on the waitlist will likely show up hoping for a seat. At 1:45 PM we will stop checking names of those who have registered. To ensure your seat\, arrive well before then! DESCRIPTION:CamdenCAN and the Camden Public Library\, as part of its continuing Camden Talks Climate series\, welcome Professor Emeritus Ivan J. Fernandez for his presentation “Camden’s Forests as a Lens on Maine’s Changing Climate” on Tuesday\, May 6\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamden is blessed to share a border with a well-forested state park. While we’re sure you knew about the park\, do you also know that\, in addition to being a treasured natural resource\, our state park also provides solutions to many of the challenges presented by a warming world? \n\n\n\nUMaine Professor Emeritus Ivan Fernandez will explore how climate change affects forests\, including the ways in which forest management responds to those changes\, and how forests contribute to climate solutions. \n\n\n\nHe’ll also consider relevant findings from the 2024 Maine Climate Council’s Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STS) and briefly discuss the 2024 quadrennial update of the Maine Climate Action Plan—Maine Won’t Wait 2.0—including its seven overarching strategies for Maine action on greenhouse gas mitigation\, climate adaptation\, and building resilience in our communities and ecosystems. \n\n\n\nThis program is hybrid and will take place in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Fernandez is Professor Emeritus and Climate Research Scientist in the School of Forest Resources\, Climate Change Institute\, and School of Food and Agriculture at the University of Maine\, and Director of the Maine Climate Science Information Exchange. He has served on various U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board committees in Washington DC since 2000 and has led Maine’s Climate Future assessments in 2009\, 2015\, and 2020. In 2019 he was appointed to the Maine Climate Council\, serves as co-Chair of its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee\, and is a member of its Natural Working Lands working group. \n\n\n\n\nAmong other awards\, Fernandez was made a Distinguished Maine Professor in 2007\, CASE/Carnegie in Washington DC named him Professor of the Year for Maine in 2008\, he was named a fellow in the Soil Science Society of America in 2010 and was the 2018 President’s Public Service Achievement Award recipient at the University of Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is put on in partnership with CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow)\, a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. SUMMARY:In the Reading Room: A Feast of Poetry and Song (Camden Festival of Poetry)
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome a line-up of accomplished poets and performers to the beautiful Reading Room for an evening of poetry and music on Tuesday\, May 13 at 6:00 (yes\, SIX o’clock!) p.m. This event will kick off the 3rd Annual Camden Festival of Poetry. \n\n\n\nPoets & Performers\n\n\n\n\nSandra Lynn Hutchison has published three books: Chinese Brushstrokes (a memoir)\, The Art of Nesting (poetry)\, and A Tale of Love (a translation). She has been the recipient of various literary awards and recognitions\, including the Emily Dickinson Poetry Award and a Jane Kenyon Poetry Fellowship. Her most recent chapbook The Beautiful Foolishness of Things was a finalist in the 2022 Poet’s Corner chapbook contest.   \n\n\n\n\n\nKristen Lindquist lives in Camden and Monhegan Island. Her poetry and essays have been published in numerous journals and anthologies. Her first poetry collection\, Transportation\, was a finalist for a Maine Literary Award. Her other books include Tourists in the Known World and Island: Haiku\, which received a Merit Book Award from the Haiku Society of America. \n\n\n\n\n\nApril Messier is currently working on her master’s thesis\, a manuscript of original poetry and poetics. Her work explores the relationship between lineage and identity as well as the healing capacities of language and the natural world. She gathers inspiration from her deep connection to this land that her ancestors have stewarded for many generations\, and which she herself has farmed for over a decade. April lives with her partner Eric and two dogs in Belfast\, Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\nCarl Little is the author of Blanket of the Night: Poems (Deerbrook Editions\, 2024). His poetry has appeared in The Café Review\, Maine Arts Journal and Maine Sunday Telegram\, among other publications\, as well as in several anthologies edited by Wesley McNair. In 2021 the Rabkin Foundation awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award for his art writing. Little lives on Mount Desert Island. \n\n\n\n\n\nBen Rooney is a farmer and carpenter. He loves geeking out on nature\, outdoor recreating and all things that ferment.  Artistic expression is something he strayed away from during adolescence.  Only recently has writing poetry and music come back into practice\, after a 10-year hiatus.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMark S. Burrows\, who will M.C. the event\, is an award-winning poet\, translator\, and scholar\, as well as co-founder of the Camden Festival of Poetry. Together with Jon Sweeney\, he has published three books of meditative poems inspired by Meister Eckhart’s writings\, most recently Meister Eckhart’s Book of Darkness and Light which was awarded the Gold Medal by the Nautilus Book Awards in 2024. His translations of German poetry include\, most recently\, the first full-length translation of the German-Jewish poet Hilde Domin’s poems\, The Wandering Radiance: Selected Poems of Hilde Domin (2023) and a new translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus (2024). He also recently published You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke (2024)\, cowritten with Stephanie Dowrick. SUMMARY:"An Introduction to Green Burial" with Jean Matlack\, Midcoast Maine Green Burial
DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes Jean Matlack\, a member of the nonprofit Midcoast Maine Green Burial (MMGB) for a presentation on Thursday\, May 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nMMGB is a local\, grass-roots volunteer organization formed to promote the creation of a green burial cemetery in Knox\, Waldo or Lincoln County\, Maine. All are welcome and light refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe Green Burial Council\, a national educational and certifying organization\, defines Green Burial as “a way of caring for the dead with minimal environmental impact that aids in the conservation of natural resources\, the reduction of carbon emissions\, the protection of worker health\, and the restoration and protection of habitat.” It also offers a healing way for the loved ones of those who have died to move through this challenging time of loss. \n\n\n\nJean Matlack will present about the basics of green burial. After the presentation\, there will also be an opportunity to speak privately with a member of Midcoast Maine Green Burial. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean Matlack is a retired psychologist living in the Camden/Rockport area since 2005 and has been concerned about environmental matters for many years. When she learned that green burial offers an earth-friendly way to car for our dead\, she became an advocate. Jean found many others who were of like mind\, and in May 2023 founded Midcoast Maine Green Burial to educate and advocate for green burial. Their vision is to manifest a green burial ground in Knox\, Lincoln\, or Waldo county.

Camden\, with its tree lined streets and canopied neighborhoods\, has been a proud Tree City USA community since 1996. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to convene at 1:00 p.m. on the corner of Atlantic Ave and Rt. 1 across from the big library steps\, where we’ll kick off with a tree planting\, followed by a brief program of Arbor Day-themed inspiration. DESCRIPTION:Camden Philosophical Society at its gathering on Tuesday\, May 20\, will discuss chapters from contemporary global public intellectual Yanis Varoufakis’s latest work\, Techno Feudalism. These chapters pull together threads from several topics discussed by the society over this past winter\, including alternatives to capitalism\, promises and dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, and human relationships to each other and to the Earth.  \n\n\n\nThe May 20 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nVaroufakis is a socialist politician\, an economics professor\,  former finance minister of Greece\, and currently secretary-general of the pan-European Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25).  In Techno Feudalism\, What Killed Capitalism\, heargues that capitalism has effectively collapsed and has been replaced not by Marxist socialism but by a new and powerful form of feudalism\, which he calls techno feudalism.  \n\n\n\nHe asserts that cloud rent has  overtaken profit as the driving economic force\, and humans have become “cloud serfs\,” providing unpaid labor to self-reproducing algorithms\, labor in the form of our online writings\, photos\, videos\, and movements recorded by cell phones. ”The true revolution cloud capital has inflicted on humanity is the conversion of billions of us into willing cloud serfs volunteering to labour for nothing to reproduce cloud capital for the benefit of its owners\,” Varoufakis writes. \n\n\n\nOur discussion of Techno Feudalism will focus upon Chapter 3\, “Cloud Capital\,” which is addressed to Varoufakis’s father; and Chapter 5\, “What’s in a Word.”  A PDF can be downloaded here: https://dn721607.ca.archive.org/0/items/technofeudalism-what-killed-capitalism-2023-yanis-varoufakis/Varoufakis%2C%20Yanis%20-%20Technofeudalism%20-%20What%20Killed%20Capitalism%20%282023%29%20Yanis%20Varoufakis.pdf

There is a dark cave inside each of us\, and monsters of all kinds lurk there\, all the more lethal for being hidden.
