DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this program is being rescheduled to a date in December. Please stay tuned and join us then! \n\n\n\nThe Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation with CWS President and Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology Jack Hopkins all about identifying mammal tracks and scat in Maine.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Hopkins is a wildlife ecologist who is broadly interested in understanding how animals respond to human impacts and a changing environment. He primarily uses stable isotopes and other chemical tracers in combination with a variety of field methods and statistical approaches to investigate species interactions\, wildlife-habitat relationships\, and the foraging behavior of carnivores. He is also currently active in using chemical data from laser ablation mass spectrometry to develop statistical models for applications in wildlife forensics. Much of Jack’s research is motivated by the needs of state\, federal\, provincial\, or tribal agencies. As such\, informing wildlife conservation\, management\, and policy is often the primary goal of his research. \n\n\n\nBefore co-founding CWS\, Jack worked as a faculty member at Unity College and as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UC San Diego\, UC Merced\, University of Alberta\, and Peking University in China. SUMMARY:"A Return to Nepal for Two Friends: The Annapurna Circuit\, a Visit to One's Past Peace Corps Post\, and Some Kathmandu Time" with Dan Matlack and Greg Dorr
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes travelers Dan Matlack and Greg Dorr for a fascinating travel program on Thursday\, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. recounting their original experiences in Nepal and their recent return trip. Dorr traveled to Nepal in 1974\, and Matlack lived there in the Peace Corps from 1984-1986. After all these years\, they recently returned to Nepal together. They will share an account of their experiences in Nepal then\, and now. This program will be in-person only.  \n\n\n\nTheir return trip included three sections: \n\n\n\n\nA two-week trek around the Annapurna Massif\, walking up the Manang River to the 17\,700 foot Thorung La Pass.\n\n\n\nA week-long visit to a hospital that opened in 2011 in the district of Achham\, in remote the Far Western Region (Dan’s former Peace Corps post).\n\n\n\nLast\, a week in Kathmandu.\n\n\n\n\nGreg and Dan will share photos and adventures from each portion of the trip. They will adapt their presentation if there is particular interest from the audience. Join us for this spectacular adventure and their trip down memory lane! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Dorr is a retired attorney who has lived in Camden for many years after living and working in states farther south. He and his wife Susan have been active for years in various town affairs. After Greg retired in 2007 he and Susan joined the US Peace Corps and served in Malawi for two years. Keenly interested in anthropology and travel\, he also plays the fiddle and mandolin and is an active volunteer in local organizations including Midcoast Habitat for Humanity’s Restore.  \n\n\n\nDan Matlack was a Latin teacher and admission officer in independent schools. Prior to teaching he served in the US Peace Corps in Nepal from 1984-1986. Blessed by a long standing family connection to Camden\, he spent six summers in Camden working for restaurants and contractors\, lived here for a year before heading to Nepal\, and then retired here with his wife Allison in 2021. Broadly interested in history\, geography\, and languages as well as teaching he led student trips to Europe and India. He also volunteers locally. He met Greg working for Midcoast Habitat for Humanity’s Restore two years ago.

SUMMARY:(New Group!) Coastal Friendship Circle - Embracing Neurodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Friendship Circle\, embracing neurodiversity and mentoring each other! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new social\, educational and supportive friendship circle is forming for neurodiverse adults living in coastal Maine. Join us for one or both of the start-up meetings (Belfast and Camden) and share what you can bring to the group and what kind of support you would most like to get from this group of friends. The Coastal Friendship Circle’s first meeting will be held on Saturday\, May 18\, at 1:00 p.m. in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nAfter the initial two meetings\, one meeting each month will be a planning meeting and indoor activity and the other meeting of each month will be a community activity decided upon by the group.   \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for neurodiverse people including adults on the autism spectrum\, with Tourettes\, AD/HD\, or learning differences to meet up with others and find common ground\, and to share interests and activities. SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate: "Resilient Waterfront Design Transformations—How Landscape Architects are Reshaping Resilience with Coastal Communities" with Blake Sanborn
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, May 16\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom featuring Blake Sanborn\, Senior Project Manager at Richardson & Associates\, Landscape Architects. \n\n\n\nFlooding is hitting Camden close to home\, as it is for many Maine communities. Blake Sanborn has partnered with communities around the country to co-create actionable plans to address flood concerns and authored design strategies that map out incremental steps to a more resilient future. In his talk\, Sanborn will take a look at how landscape architects address flooding while building connectivity\, habitat\, public art\, biodiversity\, knowledge\, wellness\, and places to gather. His talk will feature examples spanning from mega-projects in major cities to a small public schoolyard retrofit.  \n\n\n\nSanborn now makes Camden his home\, and is keenly interested in how Camden approaches the questions facing the harbor and the many opportunities presented by both sea level rise and repeated high-rainstorm flooding.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSanborn gave a well received talk to the Camden Garden Club on this topic this past winter. This May’s talk\, part of CamdenCAN’s Camden Talks Climate series\, is designed to both inform residents about harbor possibilities\, and encourage robust conversations about the climate-induced changes ahead. The event with be held at the Camden Public Library\, and will be in person and broadcast via zoom. \n\n\n\nBlake Sanborn is at the forefront of the climate conversation in Maine having spent over 20 years designing and implementing public and private sector open spaces across the US and abroad. After growing up in Gorham\, Blake received a degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and has served as a Principal of AECOM’s Landscape Architecture and Urban Design studio prior to joining his current firm\, Richardson and Associates. His work has received recognition for design excellence from the American Society of Landscape Architects where he has served as an executive committee member and chair of the sustainability committee.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person at the library as well as on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome a line-up of accomplished poets and performers to the beautiful Reading Room for an evening of poetry and music on Tuesday\, May 14\, at 6:30 p.m. This event is in lead-up to the 2nd Annual Camden Festival of Poetry\, of which the library is pleased to be an institutional partner. \n\n\n\nPoets & Performers\n\n\n\n\nCarol Willette Bachofner\, is an award-winning poet\, memoirist\, photographer\, and watercolorist who served as Rockland’s Poet Laureate. Author of 7 books of poetry\, most recently Test Pattern\, a Fantod of Prose Poems\, Carol offers poetry and craft tips at carolbach.substack.com.  \n\n\n\n\n\nKeenan Boscoe is a writer and designer living in Lincolnville\, Maine. He is the owner of Topo: Paper & Post\, a stationery and bookstore in downtown Camden\, and graduated from Colby College with a degree in fine art & geology. Keenan is interested in land\, place\, deep time\, and a good notebook. www.paperpo.st \n\n\n\n\n\nMark S. Burrows is an award-winning translator\, poet\, editor\, and speaker. His recent publications include The Chance of Home. Poems\, Meister Eckhart’s Book of Darkness and Light\, and The Wandering Radiance: Selected Poems of Hilde Domin (2023). He is the co-founder and co-director\, with Meg Weston\, of the Camden Festival of Poetry. www.soul-in-sight.org \n\n\n\n\n\nEllen Goldsmith’s recent book\, Left Foot\, Right Foot\, is an illness and recovery story in 28 poems. Her first book\, No Pine Tree in This Forest Is Perfect\, won the 1997 Slapering Hol Press Chapbook Contest. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and in anthologies. Professor Emeritus of the City University of New York\, she lives in Cushing\, Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\nMargaret Haberman lives and writes in Belfast\, Maine. She is by profession an American Sign Language interpreter. Her poems have been published in the Island Journal\, the journal Spiritus\, and selected for the Maine Public Radio program Poems from Here. \n\n\n\n\n\nErin Mayer is the author of two novels\, YOUTHJUICE (under the name E.K. Sathue\, forthcoming\, Hell’s Hundred/Soho Press) and FAN CLUB (Mira/HarperCollins). Her work has appeared in Bustle\, Travel + Leisure\, Better Homes & Gardens\, Literary Hub\, CrimeReads\, Business Insider\, and Man Repeller\, among others. She lives in Camden with her partner\, Benjamin Perry\, and their beloved haunted doll\, Persephone. \n\n\n\n\n\nBenjamin Perry is the author of Cry\, Baby: Why Our Tears Matter. Our experiences of joy? \n\n\n\nYou are invited to join a workshop series of art classes wherein we make mandalas – beautiful\, meditative circles – to engage our hands while our souls and minds listen patiently for the answers we seek. It is remarkable how this all works together. The classes will take place on four Saturday mornings: May 11\, May 18\, May 25\, and June 1 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the Picker Room. View the video on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aALjjG8S4CE \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome the extraordinary Anna Zilboorg\, who will speak to the audience about “Surviving Disaster with Knitting in Hand\,” on Tuesday\, May 7\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nAnna Zilboorg\n\n\n\nNOTE: This program is now IN PERSON ONLY. There will not be a live Zoom component. However\, there will be a recording.  \n\n\n\nThe richness of colors\, textures\, and patterns that are vivid in Anna Zilboorg‘s knitted creations reflect the multi-faceted tapestry of her personal and professional life. Now 91 years old\, she has lived in NYC\, Cambridge\, Meadows of Dan in the Blue Ridge Mountains\, and currently in Rockland\, with past travels to Turkey and Armenia to study Middle Eastern knitting patterns. \n\n\n\nHer formal schooling ended with a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard and 11 years of teaching at MIT. Anna has also run a shelter for street kids\, cooked for a monastery\, and sold her work at Washington\, D.C. and Philadelphia craft shows. She has raised two children and has just welcomed her fourth great-grandchild into the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna considers herself primarily a teacher\, though she has a store on the fiber arts website Ravelry. Of her six books\, she considers “Knitting for Anarchists” the most useful\, and because of this book\, she has been known as the “anarchist knitter.” \n\n\n\nAnna will talk about knitting\, not as a hobby\, but as a useful and important part of living a good life in a really hard time. In her words\, “Personally\, it gets us out of anxiety and anger\, into beautiful things. Socially\, it mends divisions and creates possibilities.”

SUMMARY:"Invisible: Personal Stories from the Front Lines of Disability" Film Screenings and Q&A\, Community Connect Maine
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a screening of Invisible: Personal Stories from the Front Lines of Disability\, a collection of short videos about the lived experience of Mainers with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families and caregivers. This will take place on Thursday\, May 2\, at 6:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nThis ongoing\, multi-year project was developed\, with grant funding from the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council\, by Community Connect Maine\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the vision that all people have the support they need\, when they need it\, to live a full life in their communities of choice. A barrier to achieving that goal is that many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are invisible in their community. We hope to overcome that barrier by helping people in the disability community share their stories. \n\n\n\nAdmission to the screening is free\, but attendees are strongly encouraged to register in advance at https://communityconnectme.org/events-and-workshops. \n\n\n\nThese videos premiered in Brunswick in 2023 to a standing-room-only crowd. We have since been invited to screen them all over the state. As Maine prepares to completely overhaul the system of care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities\, it is more critical than ever that their voices are heard. \n\n\n\nEveryone has a story to tell\, and stories are meant to be heard. Come hear our stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Connect Maine was founded in 2015 as a network of families of people with disabilities. The purpose of the network is to strengthen and expand resources to improve quality of life in the disability community. Collaborating with other statewide resources\, we kicked off our network by obtaining a grant to train ten individuals with disabilities and family members to share their lived experiences in order to advocate for a better system of care. \n\n\n\nThat network is now more than 4\,000 strong\, representing all 16 Maine counties. We became a 501c3 non-profit in 2020\, and collaborate with over 12 statewide organization to fulfill our vision that all people have the support they need\, when they need it\, to live a full life in their communities of choice. Our mission is to connect individuals\, families\, caregivers\, and communities to improve the system of care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and related conditions.

SUMMARY:"Dirigo: Maine at Gettysburg" Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, in partnership with the Camden-Rockport Historical Society\, are pleased to welcome filmmaker Daniel Lambert for a feature of his documentary film\, Dirigo: Maine at Gettysburg\, on Saturday\, April 27\, 4:00 PM. This program will take place in-person only in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nFifteen units of Maine soldiers – infantry\, artillery\, and cavalry\, were all part of the Union army at Gettysburg. Their contributions were heroic and vital. What they did when they were called upon helped determine the battle and\, ultimately\, the Civil War. Wherever the action occurred at that sprawling battlefield\, Maine men were in the thick of it. From Devil’s Den to Little Round Top\, the Peach Orchard to the Wheat Field\, from Steven’s Knoll to Cemetery Ridge\, Maine men fought for the Union. Many sacrificed their lives for the idea that the United States of America was worth saving. \n\n\n\nThis film produced by Emmy-nominated Maine filmmaker\, Dan Lambert\, examines the roles of the Maine men who helped to save the nation. The film features footage captured at the Gettysburg National Battlefield over the course of two years and offers Civil War Reenactment footage captured at events at the Norlands Living History Center in Livermore\, Maine and at the Daniel Lady Farm in Gettysburg\, Pennsylvania.  \n\n\n\nThe film will be followed by Q & A and discussion with Civil War history specialist David Sulin. \n\n\n\nView the trailer here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Lambert has produced two previous films on Maine in the Civil War “Sixteenth Maine at Gettysburg in 2012”\, and “Forlorn Hope in 2019” about the ill-fated charge of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment at the 1864 Battle of Petersburg.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is seeking volunteers to help with the annual Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday\, April 27\, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The objective will be to clean up leaves\, brush\, trash\, etc. that have accumulated over the winter and during recent storms. Volunteers should bring gloves\, leaf rakes\, weeding tools\, and pruners. Parks Director Dave Jackson will meet volunteers in the Camden Amphitheatre\, organize the crew\, and assign tasks. In 2017\, she established “Schoodic Notes: Bird Sounds of Acadia\,” a collaborative project with Schoodic Institute’s Bird Ecology program. Along with the help of a few other natural sound recordists\, the project has archived over 1200 recordings of Acadia’s birds. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Murray Carpenter\, Maine Public\n\n\n\nLaura is also a seasoned educator and wildlife technician. She has long sought opportunities to empower others to develop their knowledge\, skills\, and experience to understand\, connect with\, and serve the natural world. She holds a Master of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA. She created and ran natural and cultural history programs for adults and families through University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center\, the National Park Service\, and many other organizations. She has also conducted track surveys of Canada Lynx via snowmobile\, and howling surveys in search of Gray Wolf\, in Maine’s North Woods. Partially retired these days\, she spends most of her free time exploring the natural world\, and especially recording natural sounds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus\, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective\, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared.

DESCRIPTION:Join Penobscot Marine Museum Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for an illustrated talk on Tuesday\, April 16\, at 6:30 PM\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent.” The presentation will explore Moore’s life and work as a denizen of Midcoast Maine. This event is presented in conjunction with the “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent” exhibit from the Penobscot Marine Museum in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of April.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cwRpzItIRVClMP2JZwakCg \n\n\n\nSteel “boom jumper” No. 35 being launched by crane for sea trials on April 18\, 1952 at Rockland’s General Foods Shipyard.  Photo by Jim Moore\n\n\n\nAs a child\, Jim Moore had the opportunity to visit a noted news photographer’s darkroom\, which sparked a lifelong interest in cameras and photography. In 1940\, he moved to Rockland with his new bride\, Cecile\, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office\, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career\, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist\, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001.  The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library carries on its Maritime Month tradition this April by featuring a month-long exhibit\, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent\,” from the Penobscot Marine Museum and hosting a series of themed programs. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: John Dewey - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Famed early 20th Century philosopher John Dewey will provide grist for the discussion mill at the April 16 gathering of the Camden Philosophical Society. Like other ancient-to-contemporary thinkers whose ideas the society has discussed in recent months\, Dewey saw philosophy as a way of living and interacting with the world\, not merely as an academic pursuit. The hybrid gathering will be at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, April 16. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom.  \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nDewey spent the first half of the last century as the United States’ pre-eminent public philosopher\, writing on educational theory\, aesthetics\, human nature\, politics and culture\, and other topics. Born in Vermont in 1859\, he died in New York City in 1952 — so his life spanned horse-drawn carriages to jet airplanes\, muskets to hydrogen bombs. His obituary was on the front page of the New York Times. \n\n\n\nKnown as a pragmatist\, Dewey took human lived experience (described as meaningful transactions with the world) as the basis of his philosophy. In political philosophy\, he was a strong advocate for democracy\, including reforming our educational system to solicit individual traits for working in community. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy has proposed readings from Dewey’s 1927 book The Public and Its Problems: An Essay in Political Enquiry.
