With a profound dedication to the preservation of Maine’s natural habitats\, Kirk’s expertise as the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust has garnered admiration and respect. His acclaimed blog\, ‘Nature Bummin’\, serves as a repository of ecological insights into the region\, reflecting his deep-seated passion for nature observation and wildlife tracking\, particularly during the winter months. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this captivating event as Kirk shares his expertise and enthralling experiences\, offering a rare glimpse into the enchanting world of Maine’s wildlife. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirk Gentalen is the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust and writes about the ecology of the area in his Nature Bummin’ blog. A self-described nature observer\, one of his passions is tracking wildlife especially in winter. He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. \n\n\n\nKirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. He also compiles wildlife sightings on Vinalhaven in his entertaining blog\, Vinalhaven Sightings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. DESCRIPTION:Who knew that dance could be enjoyed into our older age?!  Rita Swidrowski\, a senior and an avid Zumba dancer\, teaches beginner dance classes for active older adults at the Belfast YMCA. She will lead a variety of dances with cha cha\, twist\, boogie\, salsa\, mambo steps & more to a variety of tunes. No dance experience is necessary\, & steps are shown & cued. Repetition makes for easy following & modifications are shown. Each person is encouraged to follow his or her own body’s needs & styles. Studies show that movement & exercise are major factors in staying healthy & fit into older age! Drago will present an illustrated talk\, “How to Weave Maine’s Shipbuilding History—the Brilliance of Holly Bean\, Dunn & Elliot\, and Percy & Small—into Compelling Fiction\,” ON ZOOM with the Camden Public Library. This event kicks off a 2024 Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Camden-Rockport Historical Society and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in the shadow of the Brooklyn Navy Yard\, Irene M. Drago developed a keen interest in every kind of watercraft at an early age. Before moving to Maine\, she worked for the Defense Department as a Russian analyst\, earned a Master of Arts degree in Spanish language and literature\, and taught at the high school and college level. Her debut novel\, Daughters of Long Reach\, was a 2018 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Winner\, First Novel and led to a sequel\, The Maine Point. More recently\, Lavinia Wren and the Sailmakers is a 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist\, Regional Fiction. If Drago isn’t penning a story\, you’re apt to find her giving a shipyard tour at Maine Maritime Museum or leading a creative writing workshop. But in fair weather\, there’s a good chance you’ll find her piloting her Maritime Skiff on Casco Bay. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrago’s bestselling novel\, Lavinia Wren and the Sailmakers\, pulls the thread of love\, not war\, through history. Didn’t get to attend the “Men Talking” event at the library this November\, or want to be part of the continuing conversation? Now is your chance to attend and participate.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, January 13\, at 6:30 p.m.\, the three men from the panel in November will join Finding Our Voices CEO and Founder Patrisha McLean in a Zoom event to continue the conversation about growing up with domestic abuse and breaking the cycle. Jory Squibb from Camden\, Scott Denman from Belmont\, and Dana Ward from Biddeford and Belfast will answer questions from participants and delve deeper into the impact that growing up in domestic violence had on them as intimate partners\, parents\, and professionals\, as well as their relationships with their mothers and siblings. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event and will take place on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host the third event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, January 11\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Parker Gassett\, a Camden resident and representative of UMaine\, will present on “Achieving Climate Resilience in Coastal Communities” and provide an overview of available resources to enhance Camden’s understanding of and preparedness for climate change. \n\n\n\nGassett will also introduce the Community Resilience Workbook\, which documents climate resilience initiatives in Maine and provides the tools and resources to help facilitate community climate action. He will also provide information on the newly established Maine Climate Science Information Exchange office. Audience members will have the opportunity to express their priorities and feedback to the Community Resilience Working Group of the Maine Climate Council. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Since 2020 he has been a member of the Marine Extension Team of the Maine Sea Grant Program at the University of Maine. Parker received the 2018 Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions Award: Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Research by a graduate student for a regional campaign on ocean acidification. This work continued to become his doctoral research on managing ocean climate change in the Gulf of Maine. He received the 2023 Maine Fishermen’s Forum Distinguished Service Award for supporting the virtual sessions of the conference in 2021. He is the co-editor and a primary author of the 2023 Maine Community Resilience Workbook\, a framework and how-to guide for climate change assessment\, collective climate action\, and achieving community resilience outcomes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) is a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. In this presentation\, representatives from The Nature Conservancy\, a global conservation and climate action organization\, will discuss a model project for lasting water source protection in India and its connections to Maine’s own Sebago Clean Water Fund. \n\n\n\nGirija Godbole\, manager of the Ghod River Water Fund in southwest India\, will speak directly from India on Zoom about the work of her team in Maharashtra\, southeast of Mumbai. Introducing her and explaining water funds and Maine’s connection to the project will be Kate Dempsey\, State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ghod River basin covers part of the districts of Pune and Admednagar and includes 472 villages\, four towns over an area of 4\,574 square kilometers\, two-thirds of which is agricultural.  There are an estimated 350 small and medium industries in the area. Like other water funds\, the Ghod River Project focuses on a watershed and operates at local\, national and global levels by helping build a coalition of stakeholders in freshwater systems and mobilizing funding streams that will sustain conservation long into the future. Among the purposes of the Ghod River Fund is to form a citizen-scientist coalition\, including farmers and tribal communities supporting stewardship of the basin and ensuring equitable access to water. \n\n\n\nWatersheds sit at the crux of the global climate\, biodiversity and water crises\, so investment in them can move the needle on many of our most urgent societal challenges at once. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\n\nTrained in anthropology\, Girija Godbole\, Ph.D.\, has worked in the environment and development sector for more than two decades. Prior to joining TNC\, she worked with the Centre for Policy Studies at IIT Bombay. Girija has conducted qualitative research on topics ranging from gender\, sanitation\, participatory forest management\, tribal welfare\, social impacts of land sale and ecosystem services. More recently she completed an empirical study on agricultural tenancy under the Nudge Research Innovation Grant and a study of domestic violence under the British Academy research grant. Girija did her M.Phil. and Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and is a recipient of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She has also done a training course in environment education from the Centre for Environment Education\, India. Passionate about issues of environment\, equality\, gender\, and power\, Girija believes in collaborative and participatory approach and has substantial experience in stakeholder engagement. She also does voluntary work with a Pune based organization Jeevan Sanstha. Girija is a LEAD (international network on Leadership for Environment and Development) Fellow.” \n\n\n\n\n\nKate Dempsey is the State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine. She has been in that role since 2016 and has been with The Nature Conservancy since 2003 working primarily in the federal policy arena.Under Kate’s leadership\, TNC Maine is making significant investments in reducing and managing the effects of climate change by joining together science and policy with placed based actions which are restoring and conserving the connections between the forests\, rivers and ocean in Maine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 37th Annual Camden Conference\, “INDIA: Rising Ambitions\, Challenges at Home” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes midcoast artists Allegra Kuhn and Liz Kalloch for a joint exhibit titled “Tête-à-Tête: Two Approaches to a Single Conversation” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of January*. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet the artists during the Closing Reception on Sunday\, January 28\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. This is your last chance to see the exhibit! \n\n\n\n\nVigil\, charcoal and fine pastel on paper\, 60″ x 30″\, Liz Kalloch\n\n\n\nMadame Devereux\, collage on board\, 10” x 8” Allegra Kuhn\n\n\n\n\nTête-à-Tête is a conversation between two artists: one playful\, lyrical and exuberant; the other provocative\, performance-based and assertive. The commonalities in their works that cross into conversation are the insistence of color\, the articulation of line and the fundamentals of composition. Kuhn and Kalloch use these three principles of artmaking in different ways\, with great effect. Both artist’s work is grounded in and an extension of feminist thought\, bringing forward different aspects of its expression and is why these two artist’s works resonate so well together and speak to each other in such an interesting way. \n\n\n\nAllegra Kuhn is a collage artist whose intuitive juxtaposition of forms\, patterns and color evoke the joyful cutouts of Matisse and more recently the artists of the Pattern and Decoration Movement of the 1970’s and 80’s\, which had its origins in the concurrent feminist movement\, with artists such as Miriam Schapiro. Like the P&D artists\, who pushed back against the rigor and severity of Minimalism and Conceptual Art\, Kuhn asks us to see the world in a less confrontational way\, inviting in a more serendipitous and spontaneous expression. Kuhn compares her work to the flower arrangements of Japanese ikebana artists\, bringing nature and humanity closer together in a celebration of both. She has exhibited throughout New England and has created public works of art for Waterfall Arts and Coastal Mountain Land Trust\, both in Belfast\, Maine. \n\n\n\nLiz Kalloch is an abstract multi-media artist whose charcoal and pastel works on paper use arousal as the purveyor of intent. The work’s intersections\, interactions and inquiries are emotionally raw\, but inescapably and beautifully human. Kalloch states “I am most interested in where lines cross and speak to each other\, and how color can amplify or dissipate the tension in those lines. I often think of my work as maps—maps that delineate both an external and internal geography. They document where I’ve come from\, where I’ve gone\, and how I move through these transitions and observe them.” The antecedent to this kind of work are artists like Egon Schiele or any of the German Expressionists from the early 20th century. Kalloch’s drawings do not hold back; they are fiery\, explosive and self-consciously dynamic. Kalloch has exhibited throughout the United States and in Europe. Her work is in both private and public collections. Her first public work of art was created in 2023 for the Here is Magic mural at Waterfall Arts in Belfast\, Maine. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. SUMMARY:Maine Authors for Lewiston - Book Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Maine Authors for Lewiston\, an informal group of more than 70 Maine authors\, have banded together to support the victims of the recent tragedy in Lewiston. The group has organized a series of 10 book signings at libraries across the state for people to meet authors and purchase books. \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will host a Maine Authors for Lewiston event on Thursday\, December 14\, 6:00 – 7:30 PM in the Picker Room. This event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFiction writers\, children’s book authors\, non-fiction writers\, and poets will be among the participants. This is a wonderful opportunity for Maine book-lovers to support local authors\, but\, most importantly\, to help our fellow Mainers as they begin to heal and recover.  \n\n\n\nAll of the participating authors have agreed to donate all\, or most\, of their proceeds from these events to help the healing and recovery efforts in Lewiston. All are volunteering because they care.  \n\n\n\nThe Maine writing community is a small\, but vibrant\, part of Maine culture. Some writers have been personally impacted by the events in Lewiston\, others simply care deeply about Maine and their fellow Mainers. Most do much of their writing in and about Maine. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes fine artist Susan Tobey White for an afternoon book signing event on Sunday\, December 10\, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. White will share from her latest book and body of work\, Lobstering Women of Maine. Books will be available for purchase and signings. \n\n\n\n“Susan Tobey White’s paintings in Lobstering Women vividly depict Maine women’s participation in today’s lobster fishing. The paintings tell the stories of what the women have to do every day to be successful in an industry dominated by men. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Tobey White’s inspiration was watching a woman unloading lobster traps from a boat on to a snow-covered dock. Her first painting was of this hard-working young woman.The simple idea began: a series of paintings of women lobstering. \n\n\n\nNow\, eighteen portraits later\, we see what is needed for the work of lobstering: painting buoys\, baiting traps\, hauling the traps\, sizing the lobsters and banding them. All the while maneuvering the powerful boat. \n\n\n\nSeveral generations of women and girls along the Coast of Maine are represented. These are hardworking women who juggle family\, school\, and other jobs\, along with their joy of being out on the water.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Tobey White has been involved in creating forever and has been a full time working artist in Maine for the last 20 years. She worked as an elementary art teacher for 15 years\, participating in art shows during the summer where she showed her paintings and doll sculptures.  \n\n\n\nWhen she stopped teaching she opened High Street Studio & Gallery in Belfast\, where she showed her own work and that of others for 15 years. The gallery closed a few years ago when the building sold.  Her current studio\, Susan Tobey White Studio\, is located at 111 High Street in Belfast and open by chance or by appointment. \n\n\n\nSusan has taught painting workshops during the past 17 years and continues\, traveling the East Coast to do so.  She is certified through Golden Acrylics\, Inc and Silver Brush as one of their Artist Educators. Her teaching has been enhanced tremendously by the knowledge of paint and brushes these two businesses have shared. \n\n\n\nHer work has been shown in numerous venues in Maine\, South Carolina\, North Carolina\, Florida\, Massachusetts and Connecticut.  Many of her paintings are in private collections throughout the United States and internationally. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist Lisa Kyle for a solo exhibit of her paintings\, titled “The Magic of Maine” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of December*. The collection features landscape paintings of the Midcoast and celebrates the beauty and serenity that Kyle has found in Maine. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Lisa Kyle during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, December 9\, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n“As I was painting this year\, I was reminded of the excitement that I always felt when we drove to Maine for our summer vacations\,” said Kyle. “As we got closer to Maine\, the traffic diminished and the scenery grew more beautiful.  Even the light seemed clearer and brighter.  While we have now lived in Maine full-time for 6 years\, I am still entranced by the beauty of Maine:  the quality of the light\, the simple yet compelling forms of the old houses and barns\, the subtle colors of the meadows\, the amazing summer sunsets and the views over the water.  \n\n\n\n\n“Take My Cares Away”\n\n\n\n“I’ll Fly Away”\n\n\n\n\nThe paintings in the collection “The Magic of Maine” are about the beauty and serenity that I have found in the landscape of Maine\, especially the Mid Coast regions\, including the Pemaquid Peninsula\, Boothbay\, Marshall Point and Birch Point State Park.  There are also paintings inspired by Vinalhaven and Jonesport.   In each painting I have tried to depict a landscape that could only be Maine\, especially Maine in the glorious season of summer.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lisa Kyle\n\n\n\nAs far back as I can remember\, I have loved to draw and paint. I always wanted to be a painter.  Even while I began practicing architecture\, I studied painting. I took classes wherever my husband and I lived – at SMU in Dallas\, at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah and at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Maryland.  More impactful\, I also studied privately with many artists including Scott Christensen\, Jill Carver and Lori Putnam.  My dream was always to paint full time\, one day\, some day.  \n\n\n\n“Misty Moonlight”\n\n\n\nI spent many years as a residential architect\, squeezing in time to paint whenever I could: early mornings before going to an office\, or on the weekends after chores.  In 2006\, I had a sort of rude awakening when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I realized that a lot of the cliches are true:  life is short\, life can turn on a dime\, you should follow your dreams\, and there is no time like the present.   After finishing cancer treatments in 2007\, I began to make a plan:  to live somewhere beautiful and to paint for a living.  I now know that dreams can indeed come true. \n\n\n\nIt took a few years for my husband and I to get here\, but we moved to Maine in 2016!  We live in an old 1830’s farmhouse that we renovated and restored.  Like most old houses\, it is a work in progress\, a never-ending project.  In 2017\, I began painting full time and have relished every moment of it!  I love exploring the areas around our home in mid-coast Maine and also Acadia to find inspirations to paint!  I love trying to capture the energy and emotion of a landscape in paint.    I love knowing that I am finally where I am supposed to be. \n\n\n\nI begin paintings with sketches\, and often paint plein-aire or on-site.  I have learned that I am a fair-weather painter though!  In the winter\, I paint in my studio\, using sketches\, on-site paintings and photographs as sources of inspiration.  Whether they are created in the field or in my studio\, I try to capture some of the beauty of the natural world – \n\n\n\nthe quality of the light\, \n\n\n\nthe simple yet compelling forms of the vernacular architecture\, \n\n\n\nthe subtle colors of the meadows\, \n\n\n\nthe magic at sunset.  \n\n\n\nI am constantly stunned at the ceaselessly changing blues of the waters\, whether they are the ponds\, rivers\, or the ocean. \n\n\n\nThe more that I paint\, the more convinced I am that Art is Important – it feeds our soul.  My calling is to lift up nature by creating beautiful objects so that others can live with the beauty and serenity of nature in their homes. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Lisa Kyle at her website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host a panel discussion titled “Where Does Camden Stand on Climate Action?” on Thursday\, December 7\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room and on Zoom. This event discussion will provide insight into Camden’s climate action and is in the second of the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town and CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow). Panelists will include Watershed School activists\, Sarah Miller\, Jeremy Martin\, and Dave St. Laurent\, among others. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. They’ll discuss the importance of climate education in our schools as well as explore how a green house gas inventory is conducted. \n\n\n\nSarah Miller\, a Camden resident who sat on the (now defunct) Energy Committee\, will then report on their initiatives\, progress\, and the inevitable set backs. \n\n\n\nJeremy Martin\, Camden’s Planning and Development Director\, will follow with an update on the changes made to public buildings (the Siemens projects) and other municipal efforts including the town solar array. \n\n\n\nDave St. Laurent\, the town’s Public Works Director\, will discuss flood resiliency (storm and water level management) and other initiatives. Other participants will provide updates on data for EVs\, heat pumps\, and solar panel installations in town. \n\n\n\nPanelists Bios\n\n\n\nJanet McMahon is an ecologist who works with land trusts\, conservation organizations\, state agencies\, and private landowners to identify\, understand\, and design landscape-scale conservation areas and climate corridors. She studied biology and geology at Colby College and has a masters degree in plant ecology from the University of Maine. She served on the faculty of Watershed School for 12 years\, where she taught courses in Global Climate Change\, World Geography\, and Conservation Biology. \n\n\n\nAlex Facq is a 2023 graduate of Colby College with a major in Environmental Policy. Alex graduated from Watershed high school\, where they were a member of the Camden Energy Committee and one of the students involved in helping Camden to join the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate. In their free time\, Alex enjoys glassblowing and cross country skiing. \n\n\n\nSarah Miller is a semi-retired international energy and business journalist and editor. She has lived in Missouri\, Brussels\, Washington D.C.\, London\, New York City\, and now Camden\, where she is active in numerous community organizations. Sarah was on the last Camden Energy and Sustainability Committee and is a founding member of CamdenCAN. She is also a blogger on Medium and on Pen Bay Pilot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeremy Martin is Camden’s Planning and Development Director. Jeremy has over 25 years of experience in land use planning\, zoning\, permitting\, and regulatory compliance. Jeremy oversees all land use and environmental permitting and compliance\, as well as the administration of the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code for Camden. He also coordinates economic and community development activities. Over the last few years Jeremy has also taken on the role coordinating climate resilience and adaptation work for Camden. Jeremy is certified in Shoreland Zoning\, Floodplain Management\, and Land Use Planning\, as well as Building Codes Administration by the State of Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development. Prior to joining Camden (March of 2018)\, Jeremy served as the City of Bangor’s Director of Code Enforcement\, Permitting\, and Inspections. Prior to that he served as the City’s Development Coordinator and Zoning Administrator. He also worked as an Environmental Specialist with the Cobbossee Watershed District in Winthrop\, Maine\, and was a Land Use Consultant for the Maine Association of Conservation Districts. He began his work in watershed management as a Natural Resource Specialist with the China Region Lakes Alliance where he worked on non-point source pollution reduction programs. Jeremy has a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University where he studied Geography and Political Science. He also studied Environmental Policy and Forestry at Unity College. \n\n\n\nDave St. Laurent\n\n\n\nDave St. Laurent is Camden’s Public Works Director\, Road Commissioner\, Tree Warden\, Dam Control Agent\, and Water Resource Manager. David has over 25 years of environmental experience including working for Beal’s Island Shellfish Hatchery\, Maine Inland Fish & Wildlife\, Poland Spring\, Bath Iron Works\, Fisher Engineering\, and the City of Rockland. With 15 years of municipal experience in the mid-coast\, David has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University Maine Machias. Much of his career has been focused on protecting water resources as well enjoying much of the recreation it provides. Sporting camps at some 35 sites around Moosehead Lake have evolved from the 1880s and 1890s and continue to exist today. \n\n\n\nCamp Greenleaf\, Sugar Island\n\n\n\n“As a long-term Moosehead Lake camp owner\, I’ve often wondered about the histories of the sporting camps on the lake. How have these camps responded to the economic\, technological\, and cultural changes brought by the passage of time from the post-Civil War era to that of the present day; to the changes from transportation by stage\, railroads\, and steamers to road networks and automobiles; to the 40-hour work week and increases in leisure time; to the impact of “back to nature” movements; and to the cultural favor or disfavor of hunting and fishing? \n\n\n\n“These questions begged for exploration. Fortunately\, sporting camps at some 35 sites around the lake have evolved from the 1880s and 1890s to continue to exist today. From economic necessity\, all current camps\, even those that have existed for 100 years or more\, place increased emphasis on recreational and outdoor experiences aside from hunting and fishing. They have thrived by adjusting and evolving over the years to offer customer services and experiences which reflect social and cultural trends\, and the ongoing development of new technologies.” — Roger Moody \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRoger Moody is a graduate of the University of Maine where he majored in history and government and holds a graduate degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University. His career includes service as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and employment in local and State governments in Connecticut. In Maine\, in a public service career spanning 28 years\, he served as municipal manager in both Ellsworth and Camden\, and as the Finance and Operations Manager for the Bangor School Department. \n\n\n\nAfter retiring as Camden’s Town Manager in 2002\, Roger worked for several years as Vice President for Community Development and Government Banking at Camden National Bank\, and was then elected for two terms as a Knox County Commissioner (2008-2016). He has served in leadership roles in community nonprofits in each of the municipalities in which he has resided. \n\n\n\nOver the past 8 years\, he has authored 4 books about aspects of Maine history\, written a dozen articles for Maine Boats\, Homes\, & Harbors magazine\, and recently wrote an article published in WoodenBoat. \n\n\n\nRoger is married to his high school sweetheart Audrey (Simpson)\, and their married son Nathan lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist Lisa Kyle for a solo exhibit of her paintings\, titled “The Magic of Maine” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of December*. The collection features landscape paintings of the Midcoast and celebrates the beauty and serenity that Kyle has found in Maine. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Lisa Kyle during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, December 9\, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n“As I was painting this year\, I was reminded of the excitement that I always felt when we drove to Maine for our summer vacations\,” said Kyle. “As we got closer to Maine\, the traffic diminished and the scenery grew more beautiful.  Even the light seemed clearer and brighter.  While we have now lived in Maine full-time for 6 years\, I am still entranced by the beauty of Maine:  the quality of the light\, the simple yet compelling forms of the old houses and barns\, the subtle colors of the meadows\, the amazing summer sunsets and the views over the water.  \n\n\n\n\n“Take My Cares Away”\n\n\n\n“I’ll Fly Away”\n\n\n\n\nThe paintings in the collection “The Magic of Maine” are about the beauty and serenity that I have found in the landscape of Maine\, especially the Mid Coast regions\, including the Pemaquid Peninsula\, Boothbay\, Marshall Point and Birch Point State Park.  There are also paintings inspired by Vinalhaven and Jonesport.   In each painting I have tried to depict a landscape that could only be Maine\, especially Maine in the glorious season of summer.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lisa Kyle\n\n\n\n“As far back as I can remember\, I have loved to draw and paint. I always wanted to be a painter.  Even while I began practicing architecture\, I studied painting. I took classes wherever my husband and I lived – at SMU in Dallas\, at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah and at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Maryland.  More impactful\, I also studied privately with many artists including Scott Christensen\, Jill Carver and Lori Putnam.  My dream was always to paint full time\, one day\, some day.  \n\n\n\n“Misty Moonlight”\n\n\n\nI spent many years as a residential architect\, squeezing in time to paint whenever I could: early mornings before going to an office\, or on the weekends after chores.  In 2006\, I had a sort of rude awakening when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I realized that a lot of the cliches are true:  life is short\, life can turn on a dime\, you should follow your dreams\, and there is no time like the present.   After finishing cancer treatments in 2007\, I began to make a plan:  to live somewhere beautiful and to paint for a living.  I now know that dreams can indeed come true. \n\n\n\nIt took a few years for my husband and I to get here\, but we moved to Maine in 2016!  We live in an old 1830’s farmhouse that we renovated and restored.  Like most old houses\, it is a work in progress\, a never-ending project.  In 2017\, I began painting full time and have relished every moment of it!  I love exploring the areas around our home in mid-coast Maine and also Acadia to find inspirations to paint!  I love trying to capture the energy and emotion of a landscape in paint.    I love knowing that I am finally where I am supposed to be. \n\n\n\nI begin paintings with sketches\, and often paint plein-aire or on-site.  I have learned that I am a fair-weather painter though!  In the winter\, I paint in my studio\, using sketches\, on-site paintings and photographs as sources of inspiration.  Whether they are created in the field or in my studio\, I try to capture some of the beauty of the natural world – \n\n\n\nthe quality of the light\, \n\n\n\nthe simple yet compelling forms of the vernacular architecture\, \n\n\n\nthe subtle colors of the meadows\, \n\n\n\nthe magic at sunset.  \n\n\n\nI am constantly stunned at the ceaselessly changing blues of the waters\, whether they are the ponds\, rivers\, or the ocean. \n\n\n\nThe more that I paint\, the more convinced I am that Art is Important – it feeds our soul.  My calling is to lift up nature by creating beautiful objects so that others can live with the beauty and serenity of nature in their homes.” \n\n\n\nLearn more about Lisa Kyle at her website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host the event “Men Talking: Growing up with abusive fathers and breaking the cycle” on Tuesday\, November 28\, at 5:30 PM with Finding Our Voices\, as a part of the Fall 2023 Finding Our Voices On Tour series of events in Maine libraries. The goal of these events is to break the silence of domestic abuse\, one community and conversation at a time. \n\n\n\nThis event features a panel of men survivors from Camden\, Belmont\, and Biddeford\, who will speak on their experiences growing up with childhood domestic abuse and breaking the cycle. Finding Our Voices board member and WoodenBoat founder Jon Wilson will facilitate the discussion with  and open up the conversation to the community. Refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nScott Denman and Jory Squibb will be a part of the Nov 28 panel at the Camden Public Library about growing up with abusive fathers. Jon Wilson (right) will facilitate the discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinding Our Voices is a Maine-based nonprofit founded and led by women survivors of domestic abuse.  \n\n\n\n“We empower survivors of domestic abuse in Maine through bold educational campaigns\, peer-to-peer support and services\, and a platform for their voice to bring systemic change and healing.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead the full press release:\n\n\n\nFinding Our Voices presents Men Talking: Growing up with abusive fathers & breaking the cycle \n\n\n\nPanel Discussion moderated by Jon WilsonFinding Our Voices board member\, founder of JUST ALternatives and WoodenBoatTuesday\, November 28\, 6–8PMCamden Public LibraryFree & Open to the Public \n\n\n\nMen will talk publicly about growing up with abusive fathers and breaking the cycle at the Camden Public Library on November 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Finding Our Voices event is free and open to everyone.   \n\n\n\nResidents of Waldo\, Knox\, and York County will share some of their own stories\, and then participate in a community conversation. Topics will include how their childhood experience with domestic abuse shaped their relationships with their mothers\, impacted them as parents and intimate partners and also professionally\, and the process of healing and breaking the cycle. \n\n\n\nFacilitating the discussion is Jon Wilson of Brooklin\, a Finding Our Voices board member\, founder of WoodenBoat\, and founder/president of the nonprofit Just Alternatives which supports victims of violence and violation. \n\n\n\nThe event caps the two-month “Let’s Talk About It” Finding Our Voices tour of libraries from Millinocket to York.  The previous seven stops featured a panel of women survivors.   \n\n\n\nPatrisha McLean is the founder and CEO of Finding Our Voices. She said\, “with more and more men confiding in me about growing up with abusive fathers\, and that includes emotional as well as physical\, I felt it was important to bring this topic out in the open\, and get people talking about it.  My hometown Camden library  is where Finding Our Voices first launched four years ago as a photo exhibit of my photo portraits of survivors. So I was thrilled when the library director Nikki Maounis said YES to once again hosting a ground-breaking\, survivor-powered domestic abuse-awareness event.”   She said bringing light between Thanksgiving and Christmas to how domestic abuse impacts children is perfect timing\, with “holidays a particularly miserable and dangerous time when you are living with an abusive family member.”  \n\n\n\n“Camden Public Library is excited to collaborate with Finding Our Voices once more to bring this important program to our community\,” said the library’s Executive Director Nikki Maounis. “It’s an honor to provide a space for sharing these stories and we are proud to be a part of the movement to break the silence on domestic abuse. The Monday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am.  \n\n\n\nSummary: A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store’s most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls’ Day\, but she simply won’t leave the store. Tookie\, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading with murderous attention\, must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief\, astonishment\, isolation\, and furious reckoning.
